and fire department presence. take a look at the scene earlier this morning. we're told at about 1:30, several small fires were discovered here in this hotel. and we talked to some guests and one guest tells us about what the situation was like. first there was one fire and then there was another. >> they were in full gear. and back again. then another hour, a third time they went in. we understand there is not only one fire. >> reporter: we are told no one was injured and we do have a statement from marriott spokesperson. it says late last night they were alerted to a series of small fires throughout the hotel primarily in the stairwells. the fire department was contacted according to the statement, and arrived at the hotel a short time later. as precaution, guests were relocated from their rooms to ballrooms within the hotel. and the fire department has indicated the guests can now return to their rooms. so it is open.
8:31 am
that's the end of what i'm reading from that statement here. but we're told there are going to be fire department officials and police officials here on every floor. something akin to a fire watch. they're going to keep some fire equipment and personnel here on the scene just in case. but this is an investigation going on as we heard from that one person. there was an arson investigator here inside the hotel. so officials seem to have the situation under control now. but a lot of the guests we talked to are cutting their stays short and heading home. there were a couple of conventions here. one is the american political science association. haven't learned what the other one was yet. seems to be at the tail end of these conventions so guests are, indeed, cutting their stays short. more details on this as they become available. right now we are live in northwest. derek ward. >> thank you so much. hopefully everyone gets more sleep. >> as he eluded to there, they do a lot of conferences there. it is a holiday weekend, so

were infected at summer camp. if you think your child has whooping cough, call a doctor. right now doctors are seeing the biggest spike in whooping cough since the '40s when a vaccine was first made available. the vaccine also protects against tetanus and diphtheria. some strains found are resistant to the vaccine. the initial policy would pull detectives from their cases one week a month and get them out on the streets. now the chief says some detectives from individual districts will be exempt. but there are others investigating internal affairs and other issues that will still be assigned to street duty. and some say the program could interfere with investigations. the police union has not commented on the new changes. today separate events are planned in honor of the unarmed teen killed by a police officer in ferguson, missouri. first at noon a prayer for
