a pilot headed to our emergency nefertiver made it. tonight the emergency over the skies and why the pilot had no choice but to let the plane go down. a popular trail becomes a crime scene. what's making the investigation so difficult for police. and rising tensions with russia. what its deployment of tanks and police could mean. good evening. i'm chris lawrence. a search and rescue mission is urnds w under way after a pilot flew his plane over restricted air space in d.c. and then crashed in west virginia. waukesha, wisconsin is where the plane took off. it was headed to manassas but stopped responding to air traffic control. it flew over restricted air space over washington.

the air force scrambled two f-16s to escort the plane out and the airman confirmed the pilot was unconscious. the fighter jets followed the plane another 200 miles but they could not help and it finally ran out of fuel over the atlantic ocean. it crashed over wallops island. the website shows how the flight path abruptly ends right over the water. we learned the plane was registered to a man named ronald hutchinson of wisconsin, but so far crews have not been able to find the wreckage. look for updates on our website and tomorrow starting at the 6:00 in the morning. also tonight, a mystery in maryland. police found a young man dead along a popular walking trail, ask investigators want to know what killed him. they found the body this morning in cottage city along the costa county trail. he had severe injuries to his upper body and people used that

trail. >> reporter: dino lewis was disturbed to learn that a man had been found murdered here along the anacostia river trail where he takes walks with his son. any concerns about safety? >> oh, yeah, always. a lot of people use it at night and i guess i would, too, if i had to, but it's kind of scary to think something like this happened so close. >> reporter: the murder happened about a couple hundred yards down the path. the victim was found in the grass by someone using the trail about 7:30 in the morning. roxanne price walks her dog ralph here every day and saw the police activity. >> we've never had any issues, never had anybody bother us, there is always bikes on the trails, people walk all the time. >> reporter: we're told the victim had significant trauma to his upper body. we don't know whether he was shot, stabbed or possibly beaten to death. it will take an autopsy to determine exactly how he died. lieutenant brian waters is with

maryland national capitol park police. they patrol these grounds. any idea what happened to him? >> we don't. we're in the early stages of this investigation. we're anxious find out and we'll learn more as the homicide investigation continues. >> reporter: after the crime scene tape went down, there were people fishing along the anacostia, families riding their bikes. many told us they'll still use the trail but they'll be more cautious. ashby henderson says a lot of people bike to work on this trail. >> i feel safe here, i really do. i feel like this is a safe place. i've never had a problem on this trail. i've ridden here for over five years by myself, and i love it here. i'm shocked. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news4. just in to our newsroom tonight, two families are finding somewhere else to stay after a propane tank exploded inside a d.c. apartment building. this is in southeast d.c. along third street just off atlantic. despite the explosion, no one

was hurt. crews are still looking at how badly the building has been damaged. hundreds of guests in a d.c. hotel spent part of the night sleeping on the ballroom floor after someone set a bunch of fires inside the hotel. this happened early this morning at a hotel in northwest. derek ward spoke to some of the guests forced out of their rooms for hours. >> reporter: not your usual accommodations at th marriott hotel, but then again, it wasn't your usual overnight and morning. >> about 1:00, a fire alarm went off and they evacuated the building. >> i went easily down the stairs, and in the first hour we thought this is just going to be an hour or two, maybe. >> reporter: that's always unsettling, but before the sun would come up it would get even more unsettling for guests. the sight of fire engines and police should have provided a sense of calm, and at first it did, especially as it looked like things were wrapping up. >> but then after an hour and a half or two, they went in again in full gear. and back again and then another

hour, a third time they went in. >> reporter: by then it was clear this wasn't just one fire. >> it was crazy. we were standing outside because there was fire or something, but nobody really knew what happened. >> reporter: according to the hotel management and police, there were several small fires set over the course of the incident. at least one person would be hospitalized with smoke inhalation before it was all over. so for some guests, however, it was already too much. >> so the hotel's response was certainly not very good. in their defense, it was 1:00 in the morning. >> reporter: police and fire crews would maintain a presence at the hotel as an investigation began, but even though some guests were nearing the end of their planned stay, they wanted to cut it short. >> we're going to sweden tomorrow. we're leaving the hotel. >> reporter: derek ward, news4. now some news overseas where ukraine is working an all-out war against russia. they stopped short of imposing

new sanctions against russia. instead they ordered officials to draw up those sanctions and see what happens on the ground. nato ordered more than 1,000 troops into ukraine with more than 20,000 positioned on the border. ukraine's president says moscow has also moved hundredsf tanks into the country. he says russia's aggression is pushing the conflict closer to the point of no return. back here, doctors have found the first human case of west nile virus. officials also detected the virus in a horse from the same area and in mosquitos in montgomery and prince georges counties. last year doctors had treated three people with west nile. most people who contract the virus show no symptoms, but those who do usually get aches and swollen glands within a week or two of being bitten. let's check this with storm team 4. a lot of folks still trying to head outside this weekend. we'll keep an eye on some things

detectives are investigating a disturbing case of sexual assault in falls church in which the victim is a child but so is the suspect. investigators say 14-year-old boy attacked an eight-year-old girl twice, both times at the city's sunset cinema event at cherry hill park. the first time an adult stopped him, but the little girl said he came at her again. she screamed loud enough for people to hear her. he ran off but police arrested him. police saw a man sexually assaulting a teenager. they arrested juan ramirez today. ramirez jumped a woman from behind and pushed her down an

embankment. this was wednesday on lee highway and police tell us she fought ramirez for several minutes before she got away and flagged someone down for help. in silver spring, one family is lucky to be alive tonight and so are their pets. they were jolted awake around 5:00 in the morning as smoke and flames started filling their home on benium road. one person got their 86-year-old grandmother out of the house just in time. firefighters rescued two dogs, a cat, a rabbit and several turtles. the red cross is helping the family. investigators say it looks like they had remoovved the batterie from their smoke detectors. the fire itself has been ruled an accident. unnecessary roughness on and off the field. we'll tell you why police had to intervene during a high school football game

boy, oh, boy, this not a way to start a high school football season. friday night lights turned into fight night as fists started flying on and off the field. the game between two schools near cleveland got completely out of control in the third quarter. first there was a fight in the stands. that spilled onto the field and the team started beating the heck out of each other. it took a while but police got things under control and canceled the game. now, no one was seriously hurt and it's going to count as a loss for both teams. 200 years ago this week, the town of brookville, maryland played a key role in the war of 1812. for one day that small town became our nation's capitol.

president james madison and his staff had to take refuge there as british forces occupied washington. they were celebrating its unique place in american history this weekend. there will be reenactments, a tour of the town and games for the kids, and you can catch it all until about 6:00 sunday evening. you figure tomorrow a lot of those folks having to pick their times very carefully tomorrow. >> yeah, exactly. i wouldn't advise cancelling your plans tomorrow, but just be ready to head on indoors. the best chance of rain tomorrow and labor day will actually fall later in the day on sunday during the evening and overnight hours. satellite and radar right now tracking cloudy skies across the area. that means we'll have for the most part a mostly cloudy start for your sunday but it will be dry tomorrow morning. as we look at future weather, i'm starting us off at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning where you notice the area is dry. we'll be noticing a little more sunshine. regardless, though, it's dry for the morning and midday hours. as we get into the afternoon

hours, about 3:00, this is where we'll start to track showers and thunderstorms west of the district. notice impacting frederick leesburg, down through the south. also heavy rain we could be dealing with at any point time, any thunderstorms or just cells we are tracking, and that could be just some isolated flash flooding across the area, so something you need to be aware of. 5:00, notice how this heavy activity potentially pushes through the district, alexandria as well and then continues into prince georges and anne arundel counties. 9:00 still the potential for scattered showers and thunderstorms across the area, and that threat continues into the overnight hours. now, here we are labor day early in the day, maybe an isolated shower in the morning hours, but as we get into the afternoon hours, we'll be tracking scattered showers and thunderstorms. a better chance that your labor day is dry when you're comparing it to sunday.

madison. it was a good game for the turks but it was james madison. >> i know the guys are cleaning out their lockers, i know. z >> the redskins' 53-man roster is finally set now and there were a few surprising cuts today, but let's get you updated on a few position battles. forsythe beat out the kicker. cyrus red made the team. he stootd o red beat out rookie lake seastruck out of baylor. he turned a lot of heads with his speed. he was second on the team in rushing this pre-season. he could be a candidate for the practice squad. not just rookies leading. royster also cut. the running back spent the last three weeks in new york. we didn't see much time on the field last year. chris thompson is also out. drafted by the team last year, thompson just couldn't stay healthy for the redskins, playing only two pre-season

games this year. for a full list check out redskinswashington.com. the st. louis rams said goodbye to michael sam. sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted by the nfl back in may, but today he was cut by st. louis. the seventh round draft pick finished with drafts. they wished sam well and said there were no issues outside football. the first weekend of college football did not disappoint for fans. some big games being played for local teams in the area. we start with the maryland terps, not necessarily a big game in college. >> they're all big, jason. >> but it was great to see players healthy, diggs, deion long, to name a few. when you have a guy like c.j. brown as a quarterback, the first quarter was scoreless. he gets into the end zone, an
