some youns poudownpours are pos. in addition to that it's hot. it's humid. all of those factors means the weather is going to have a low to moderate impact on your day today. highs will be in the low 90s. the immediate area is dry. light showers mainly back over west virginia. further back this will be the rain that impacts our late afternoon and evening hours. so 11:00 a.m. an isolated shower possible in frederick, loudoun and fauquier counties but really not until 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 where we're tracking scattered thunderstorm potential in the d.c. metro area. more on the timing of the thunderstorms later today coming up in a bit, angie. >> thank you. right now, gaithersburg is shut down from brink road to goshen school road. montgomery county police say three people were in a serious car crash. two people were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. only one car was involved. wssc working to fix a 10 inch water main break this morning on brunette avenue in silver

springs. 37 people are going without water until the pipe can be patched up. you're looking at a picture that a viewer sent us. the main broke last night sent a river of water rushing down that street. we're going to let you know as soon at they say they're going to turn the water back on. crews will search for a pilot who passed out in the cockpit and crashed in the atlantic ocean. that pilot was the only person in the plane headed to manassas but drifted over the no-fly zone above the district and then crashed into the ocean about 50 miles east of wallops island in virginia. this is video we received from the airport in wisconsin where the plane took off. the ntsb is investigating the crash this morning. howard county police trying to figure out what caused a tree to fall on a man in woodbine. around 4:30 yesterday a man was cooking on a grill when the tree came down on him. when fire and rescue arrived it was too late. he had died. three kids at the home when the tree fell were also hurt. they are expected to be okay.

part of the tree also went through the roof of the house. the family will now have to find somewhere else to stay. there is a mystery this morning on a popular trail in cottage city. a man was found murdered and police have no idea how it happened. the body was found yesterday morning along the anacostia river trail near bladensburg road. police don't know how he died, only that he had significant trauma to his upper body. people use that trail every day looking over their shoulders. any concerns about safety. >> always. a lot of people use it at night and i would too if i had to but it's scary thinking something like this happened to close. >> prince george's county police say an autopsy of the victim should shed more light on how the man died. two d.c. families can't stay in their homes this morning after a propane tank exploded. crews are figuring out how much damage it caused. this happened on third street southeast just off atlantic street. check it out, you see all the

firefighters there over the apartment building where this happened. no one was hurt. d.c. police are trying to find out who's responsible for setting several fires inside of a northwest hotel. we first brought you this breaking news yesterday morning. around 1:00 in the morning, guests were startled awake by fire alarms and then ordered to get out of the building. according to hotel management, several fires were ignited inside the hotel while firefighters were on the scene. at least one person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. guests were forced to stand outside for hours wondering what happened. >> we were standing outside, because fire and something. nobody knows what happened. >> the hotel's response was certainly not very good. now in their defense, it was 1:00 in the morning. >> they spent the night sleeping on the floor while the hotel sorted everything out. the pictures were sent to us. police don't have a suspect yet. a reminder to always have

more. >> i maybe will get six hours. >> reporter: 17-year-old ryan edwards says he's like most kids at his high school staying up too late and getting up too early which often means sleeping less than six hours a night. >> kids at my school, i mean, you know, you notice first thing in the morning nobody wants to talk to each otherp. everybody is like half awake. they just want to, you know, wander through the hallway like zombies. >> reporter: doctors say that's not surprising. studies show between 70 and 85% of 11th and 12th graders are chronically getting too little sleep. that means less than seven hours each night when they really need at least nine hours. >> it's when we don't sleep well or when our sleep is deprived, recent science shows that parts of the brain, actually go to sleep during the day to catch up during the day. >> reporter: dr. daniel lieuen is a sleep specialist with children's national health system. he says that reaction in the blain can cause lapses in

attention, poor judgment, aggression and depression and that can affect a child's learning and social behavior. >> one of the issues with sleep time is simply that kids lives are so full. there is so much to do, particularly the adolescence, school pressure, social pressure, sports. >> reporter: he says early school start times are to blame because the biological clocks of adolescence are naturally programmed to sleep between 11:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m., but a lot of local high schools start before 7:30 in the morning and that doesn't leave enough time for kids to sleep. >> it's her moans and it's almost a cellular level throughout the brain and body. their sleep timing is dictated. >> usually i can't get to sleep until almost 1:00 a.m. and then i will wake up about hopefully 6:15 or 6:20 and out the door by

and the day that they return is going to be hot hot hot. i know that's something you're going to touch on. >> oh, my gosh. it's going to be 95 on tuesday. so we waited all summer for that summer like heat. well as summer starts to wind down it's here. we're talking about high temperatures in the 90s starting today and potentially staying in the 90s for highs right on through friday. right now, hazy sunshine. a live look with our city camera. clouds begin to filter back foot region around the midday hours. once again looking at more clouds than sunshine and as we get into the afternoon and evening hours, especially the late afternoon hours, starting to track scattered thunderstorms on the radar. the biggest threat would be heavy rain that could lead to some isolated flash flooding or just dampen the outdoor plans on your holiday weekend. there's a small threat that thunderstorms could contain high winds that could produce some very, very widely scattered isolated wind damage.

bob mcdonnell's corruption trial is wrapping up. starting tuesday a jury will decide whether virginia's former governor is innocent or guilty. he and his wife are accused of trading political favors for more than $150,000 in gifts. if convicted they could face decades in prison. >> chris brown will be back inside a courtroom this week. the sources say a singer has reached a plea deal that would likely allow him to avoid jail time. brown and his bodyguard are charged with punching a fan. the bodyguard was found guilty this year. charges still pending against chris brown.

meteorologist amelia segal outside. >> good morning to you at home. i have to say it is puggy out here and -- muggy out here and will remain muggy through tuesday. the heat also kick ps in today. now, weather alert day because there are strong thunderstorms potentially in the forecast later today. somebody on twitter said i guess we can't shoot the messenger. the storms today will be scattered, they will be later in the day. right now around the midday hours, hazy, hot and humid for the afternoon scattered thunderstorms north and west of washington during the evening hours, scattered storms potentially across the entire area and we could see heavy rain and any storms later today maybe some isolated strong winds. planning on exercising for the midday hours into the afternoon hours make sure you have plenty of water handy. it's hot and muggy. here's how temperatures warm. by 1:00 at 90 degrees, 3:00, 4:00, when we hover around our high temperature of 92. angie and richard, there are thunderstorms in the forecast for labor day.

nato says russia has moved more than 1,000 troops in ukraine with another 20,000 positioned on the border. ukraine's president says russia's aggression is pushing the conflict to the point of an all-out war. the u.s. welcomes the sanctions of russia's violation of ukraine's sovereignty. russia has one week to back out of the country. back here at home, people plan to rally for ukraine in front of the white house. today at 2:00 p.m., people will call on president obama to prevent what they are calling the world war iii. the protest will be on the lafayette park side across from the white house. protesters say they want strict sanctions against russia for its continued invasion. >> hands up don't shoot. >> people in ferguson, missouri, say they won't stop calling for justice. michael brown was shot and killed three weeks ago by a police officer. yesterday people took to the streets chanting "hands up don't shoot." that's become the slogan for the protesters.

brown's parents were at the march. the shooting set off days of violent protests and a military response from police. the officer has not been charged. a grand jury is examining the evidence and federal agents are conducting a civil rights investigation. right now, a 14-year-old boy in falls church is facing charges for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl. detectives say he attacked her on friday at the sunset cinema event in cherry hill park. an adult stopped him the first time but according to investigators he came back. that is when the girl screamed loud enough for people to hear her. the teenager ran off but police quickly arrested him. a man is behind bars this morning accused of sexually assaulting a teenager. police arrested juan carlos lopez ramirez yesterday. police say ramirez jumped a girl along the lee highway near gainesville square shopping center, allegedly pushed her down the embankment. police say the victim fought back and she was able to get away to find help.

>> anne arundel police looking for two men accused of stabbing another man. police say a 30-year-old man got into some kind of fight with a couple guys. this is one of them. this happened saturday morning on pioneer drive. during the fight the man was stabbed multiple times by suspects. the suspects are 24-year-old curtis matthew and 24-year-old gary jamal. the victim is in critical but stable condition this morning. right now three teenagers are in serious condition right now after their car crashed in olney maryland. we told you about this yesterday. you see the car is wrecked. actually flipped on its top there. the crash happened at macduff and cashell road. the three teenagers are boys. two are 17 years old. the other is 15. we're told that 15-year-old boy had life-threatening injuries. today police in northern virginia are working to prevent serious crashes this holiday weekend. police are stepping up enforce

mns as part of the drive to save lives campaign. this time last year they arrested 120 people for dui. you'll see more officers on the highways in places like this, i-66 in fairfax. if you drive on the dulles toll road starting this week, you will see changes taking place. crews will convert 19 exact change lanes to ez pass only lanes. starting with one on the edges of fairfax county parkway. the airport authority in charge of the road. they say nine out of ten of you who use the lanes use ez pass. there will still be one lane to use cash instead. the project could take more than a year to complete. if you are looking for something to do with your family today here is an option, go to the labor day concert on the national mall, on the west lawn of the capitol building. you will hear patriotic songs performed by the national symphony orchestra. that concert will start at 8:00 tonight but there's a froe dress rehearsal at 3:30 this afternoon. his is video from another labor

lot even if they don't have to. the news 4 i-team went through years of expenses. scott mcfarland shows us where your money went. ♪ welcome inside the trump resort las vegas. this is a deluxe room. floor to ceiling views of the city, european style kitchen, italian marble baths. >> 34. >> reporter: may 17th, d.c. taxpayers spent more than $500 for one of the deluxe rooms. room 3404 for council member muriel bowser. during her four night, $1600 trip, for a conference. a year earlier at the wynn resort in vegas council member jack evans spent more than $700 for one night for one room for the same conference. a news 4 i-team review of years of out-of-town expenses found d.c. council members travel to the same event in las vegas they spend wildly different amounts. if you're living in the district and making minimum wage and trying to get by and see your

council member, the person supposed to be representing you, spending a few nights in vegas, $600 a night for a hotel room, you have lost touch. >> reporter: says david williams of the taxpayers protection alliance. d.c. council members are free to book their own travel and need only to submit forms to the council secretary to review and get a reimbursement. the money is withdrawn from a taxpayer office budget, each member gets about $20,000 a year to spend. we checked how often the council secretary rejected a trip and we found the answer. zero times. hasn't happened once. we found much of the rest of d.c.'s government must get pre-approval before traveling from the office of the city administrator. internal e-mails obtained by the news 4 i-team show the offices required would-be travelers find bargains. administrators asked one d.c. insurance agency to stay at a ramada inn during a trip to florida to save money and

require another employee submit the estimate of the cost of his rental car before approving the trip. d.c. council members are not required to. and do not book trips as a group to secure cheaper prices. in some cases we found while attending the same conference they stay at different hotels. >> from the standpoint of council members developing better relationships with each other makes sense they would stay at the same place. plus, the fact that then you don't have the disparity in rates. >> reporter: the chairman says it might be worth considering a system which council members book hotels as a group. >> if you can save money we ought to look at that. >> reporter: bowser spent more than $500 on her first night in may, she told us her average hotel rate for the trip was, quote, not far off from what others pay for the hotel at the event. council member evans admits his hotel room cost too much even though he booked last minute made the same trip to the same event over the past several years. taxpayer groups say the council ought to bring in an additional administrator. >> there needs to be an

temperatures right now s balmy. even hot. 82 in washington. 77 in rockville, reston, dulles, leesburg, 79 manassas, 81 in camp springs. now high temperatures today will warm into the low 90s. the best chance for strong to severe thunderstorms later today will be in northern maryland. areas like frederick and washington counties. high temperatures there in the upper 80s. now the d.c. metro area, high temperatures for the most part in the low 90s. 92 for a high in washington, bethesda, 91 in gaithersburg and alexandria. we will notice a little more sunshine today than we had yesterday but overall, when you average it out we're looking at more clouds today than sunshine. partly to mach skies, clouds around for this afternoon. the latest on storm team 4 radar, continuing to track the showery activity in west virginia and far western maryland that could continue to hold together until about 11:00 a.m. and make it ways into

frederick, loudoun and fauquier. it's going to fizzle not being able to hold together as it tries to move into areas like montgomery and fairfax counties. you're dry until we get into the afternoon hours, potentially the late afternoon hours. here we are at 5:00 during the evening, notice how most of the area, the d.c. metro area through the northern neck and southern maryland, still dry, but that heavy rain impacting parts of loudoun, northern prince william and frederick counties, parts of montgomery and the district at 6:00 p.m. notice how southern maryland could potentially remain mainly dry for the evening, even into the overnight hours. but at 10:00, it's not dry in montgomery county. in fact, heavy rain potentially at that point by the brighter colors there on future weather. now as we get into our labor day holiday, maybe you're heading to the beach today, well, mainly dry at the beach today and a little breezy. an afternoon thunderstorm is possible there on monday. back at home tomorrow, chance of an isolated morning shower at
