we're looking at what the rain is doing now and whether it's going to impact your labor day. a lot of families in our area in the dark tonight. we'll show you some of the damage from this late summer storm, and while the wind, rain and lightning hampered the search for a hiker who couldn't be saved. first at 11:00, a rock climber has been killed in montgomery county, and we learn that the attempt to save him had to be suspended bougecause of severe storms. we start in bethesda. >> reporter: this was the staging area along the potomac river to rescue a rock climber who was trapped under a huge boulder on offutt island.

the rescue operation was suspended. the rock climber died of his injuries before he could be freed. >> our crews had to seek shelter. we protected the victim. eight rescue technicians remained on scene. >> reporter: the weather was a major obstacle for rescuers who had to reach the victim by boat. they couldn't explain how he got trapped or how he died. >> he may have been climbing rocks with other people. there may have been some shifting of the rocks, maybe debris, rocks, boulders, whatever, may have fallen on top of him or near him and may have shifted. >> reporter: the weather also caused scattered damage. there were lines down, cables knocked out and power crews have been working to get the lights turned back on for more than 2,000 customers. a tree fell right in front of a man who was driving a jeep. fortunately, there were no

injuries. over on burning tree road in bethesda, this huge tree fell across a driveway and into a road. fortunately, it's away from the house. even the mailbox was spared. >> sounded like a gunshot. i turned around, and, like, the tree was down. the wind was just going like super, parallel to the ground and pretty crazy. >> reporter: now we have to be very careful. we are back out here live on burning tree road. there's a line right here across the road. and this is the tree that we were talking about and the mailbox over there. montgomery county crews are here, getting ready to pull the tree out of the road and hopefully get it back open sometime tonight. darcy spencer, news 4. >> that tree sums it up. these storms left their mark tonight. let's go live to our storm team

specialist, amelia siegal. how much is this going to affect our labor day? >> while there are shower and thunderstorm chances in the forecast, it won't be as widespread, and the odds of them being severe much more low. right now on storm team ray tar still tracking some heavy rain. the good news, though, it's pushing out of the area. right now it's in ann arundel pushing out. further north and looking back to the west, just some isolated showers, but notice these showers all the way back into west virginia and southern virginia. this moisture tries to push into our area throughout the day tomorrow. so throughout the morning hours, there's a chance you're dealing with a shower through 8:00, 9:00. and getting into the afternoon hours some scattered showers and thunderstorms. here we are at 4:00. that's just half of the weather story. the heat and humidity continues tomorrow. it will be day two of our seven-day heat wave.

i'll let you know how hot it will be coming up u the organizers of one washington tradition didn't take any chances with the weather tonight. they moved the capital concert indoors. the national symphony orchestra was supposed to perform on the west lawn of the capitol. in philadelphia, this cell phone video shows fans streaming out of the made in america music festival. they were able to get back on the concert grounds about an hour later. and up in the bronx, three people are still recovering after they were struck by lightning at or chard beach. they apparently took shelter under a tree during the storm. the area was packed with families during the holiday weekend. and the torrential downpour shut down several roads. remember you can stay ahead of the weather no matter where are you, just download the storm deep weather app. you can find it in the app store

or in google play. now when students go to school after the labor day week end, grief counselor will be there to meet them. a car crash occurred. shawn gangloff died today. he was 15 years old. and his friends are still in the hospital. it is a tight community. >> when it touches your community and it happens to somebody you know who has been a teammate of my son's for several years, it's very difficult. the other family, also, they've been a teammate of my son's, and so it's very difficult even to comprehend. >> a lot of parents using this as a teaching opportunity.

police are still investigating what caused that crash. tonight as many as five people are recovering after this boat blew up in maryland. it exploded in ocean pines, not far from ocean city, which is obviously very busy this weekend. a man says he snapped these pictures moments after the boat pulled away from the dock. three people on board had to be airlifted to johns hopkins in baltimore. still trying to figure out what caused that explosion. tonight police are hoping someone comes forward with information as they try to solve a murder in a popeye's chicken restaurant. this was in the arund ruru ruru shopping mall. police say the woman had significant injuries to her body. right now they don't have a motive for her murder. she lived in laurel and was 47 years old.

developing tonight, there's been a security breach at the u.s. embassy in libya. this video shows what is believed to be a militia group having a pool party at one of the embassy's residential buildings. no american staff members were there. they were evacuated because of fighting in the area. the main compound is a mile away from that building. u.s. officials say it still looks to be secure. in northern iraq, a humanitarian airdrop may bring new hope to families under siege. this video was released today, showing bundles of drinking water and food. since mid july, they've been surrounded by isis militants who are trying to capture their city. and the u.s. launched more air strikes on militants in that area. here at home there is growing criticism now as lawmakers discuss how president obama is handling the crisis.

they are wondering why the president didn't act sooner. >> reporter: over 10,000 gallons of water and meals were dropped overnight. the airdrop followed u.s. air strikes on isis targets and after security forces and shiite militia men regained entry into the town breaking a two-month siege. in washington, the obama administration is getting slammed by critics from both parties for not acting sooner against isis. >> i've learned one thing about this president, and that is he's very cautious. maybe in this instance, too cautious. >> reporter: on thursday, the president waffled over whether he had a strategy to destroy the isis militants. now many are worried they'll strike hire. >> the longer we wait more americans and britains become at risk. >> reporter: they say the president had opportunities two years ago to battle isis. now that plan has to include

battling the militants. >> we have to defeat isis. not contain, not stop, but defeat isis. >> reporter: so far the president has not decided on air strikes in syria but has said that the air strikes should involve a coalition, the u.s. will not go it alone. the coast guard has suspended its search for a pie hot who blacked out and crashed his plane off the coast of virginia. there's little chance of finding anything. the small plane left wisconsin saturday morning and was scheduled to land in manassas. it flew over restricted airspace in washington, d.c. fighter jets scrambled to escort the plane out. the pilot was the only one on board, and he was unconscious. they followed the plane until it crashed into the atlantic ocean near wallops island.

now to a developing story. a building completely collapsed in a paris suburb. rescuers are still trying to find anyone who survived. neighbors are in shock and describe the scene as horrific. first an explosion rocked the building and then all four stories came crashing down. it was likely caused by a gas leak. we know a boy and woman were killed, but five others are still missing.

they managed to pull ten out of the rubble and all were seriously injured. it was a war that changed the world and here in the united states defined what some call the greatest generation. tomorrow marks 75 years since the beginning of world war ii. that's when a battleship opened fire on polish troops and the fighting did not stop for six years. in all, 30 nations were involved in the war. the united states tried to stay neutral until japan staged an attack on pearl harbor. today there was a touching tribute for a combat pilot. he lost his life doing what he loved best, flying fighter jets. he promised his wife he'd plant roses in her garden on her birthday. but he died when his jet crashed near the virginia/west virginia border. so the air men carried out his promise and planted 40 rose bushes in the garden.

feral cat roaming the grounds. they had to cancel class and send kids home. no one's seen the cat since. they think the cat is gone and it's safe for the kids to come back. he may have had the best view of the game, but the texas student who flew a drone over the home opener ended up in custody. investigators say the drone was unauthorized and could have posed a real safety hazard to fans and players on the field. the student was let go after facing questioning. he's facing heavy fines. it's labor day. trains will run on a sunday schedule. the system will open at 7:00 in the morning and run through midnight. off-peak fares are in effect. and because of the holiday,

metro crews will continue their track work through the day. the bethesda and medical stations are closed. everything should be back to normal by tuesday morning. a lot of people, we had storms tonight, i guess now people are starting to look at those temperatures and go whoa. >> we got through the thunderstorms tonight. now we're talking about a heat wave. it's likely to be the longest heat wave so far this year. the high temperature today was 96 degrees. a lot of people saying, it feels muggy outside. and when you factor in that mugginess, temperatures in the afternoon felt like they were around 100. that's how it's going to feel tomorrow, september 1, as we're starting to think about more fall-like weather. the weather's not going to agree with the calendar. as we continue on into tuesday, it will feel warmer outside. tomorrow, because of the heat, because of the humidity and the
