downpour east of charlottesville. a little thunder and lightning with it, that is tracking toward fredericksburg, about 55 minutes of getting right into fredericksburg and spotsylvania county. and elsewhere, just a few scattered sprinkles and short sleeve day today, steamy hot afternoon. and some afternoon storms are looking likely probably not quite as strong as the ones we had yesterday. right now, takes steamy start across the shenandoah valley, in the low 70s there with quite a bit of cloudiness. mostly cloudy all around the region. in the nearby suburbs, low 70s. grab an umbrella if you're heading out early on this labor day morning. some fess sitivities and efforv midday should be fine but rain likely moving this later this afternoon. we'll look at that at 5:11. melissa, the accident causing

any problems? we still have 70 east only one lane open at main street. we just spoke with police, they say it should be out of the way this just a little bit. 66 at cedar lane, no problems there. beltway at connecticut avenue looking good, as well. a wider look at things, you can see we don't have any problems of course. we are expecting that rain this afternoon as folks heading back into town, so it could be messy for the drive back in. 66 and 95 both looking quite nice. i'll be back in ten minutes with a look at the prince george's county side of things. starting today, you'll want to make sure you throw your crash away in the right areas. if you're caught dumping trash where it shouldn't be, you'll get hit with a hefty fine. megan mcgrath live with how the program is expanding. >> reporter: we're along georgia avenue and you can just look down here on the sidewalk and you can see all of the trash that has just been tossed to the ground. if you do that in the district,

you could be facing a $75 fine. washington is expanding their anti-littering program. you were getting warnings in august. well, starting today, you'll get the real thing, a real -- >> we'll try to get megan back for you a little later this morning. we have new video of the damage left behind by last night's storm. several trees went down near bradley boulevard and burning tree road in bethesda. the trees took down some power lines. pepco crews were out trying to make repairs. at the height of the storm, several thousand had no you power. that number is down to about 300 customers this morning. this morning police are looking for someone who shot a man to death in southeast d.c.. police say willard shelton of alexandria died after he was shot on pomeroy road. you can see that is right off

stanton road. police are offering as much as $25,000 for any information that leads to them catching the killer. students at sherwood high school will head back to school on a somber note. one classmate killed, two others seriously hurt in a car accident. 15-year-old shawn gangloff died following the crash. he along with maxwell deck ter and alex hall were in the car when it crashed. it hit a tree and light pole and rolled over. gangloff'ses classmates have created a memorial for him at the crash site. >> it happens to somebody who you know who has been a teammate of my son's for several years. it's very difficult. the other family also, they have been a teammate of my son's. and so it's very difficult even to comprehend. the other two boys in the car are still in the hospital. they have serious injuries. police are still trying to

figure out exactly what caused the car to go off the road and into the tree. richard henry elementary school will reopen tomorrow at its normal time. you might remember students were dismissed early on friday because a farrell cat was wondering around. the teacher found the cat in her classroom just as students got to school. no one has seen the cat since and they have not detected any evidence of it feedingnearby. they think the cat is gone and it's safe for the kids to come back. call it a sign of the times. major changes taking effect in atlantic city this holiday weekend. we're watching for the threat of more storms, changes you'll see over the next 12 hours and how hot temperatures will climb with your hour by hour forecast at 5:11. first, though, hold off on that toast. why the glass of wine will do nothing for your heart if you're leaving something else important out your daily you routine. also no link between how long children took these meds and their final height. for years we've heard a glass or two of wine each day can prevent heart disease. now new research finds in ord s wine drinking is only protective in people who exercise. researchers assigned 150 people to drink a specific amount of red or white wine every day for a year. after a year, the only people who had any benefit were those who drank wine and exercised. >> so instead of filling your water bottle with water -- no, no. >> i don't think you're supposed to do it at the same time, although they say that you can exercise and drink coffee. >> really? >> yeah, supposedly some benefits to that. but that does make sense. i think that you'll have a healthier heart if you exercise regularly no matter what. but, yeah, always a huge study. >> good information there. wine prices are going up, so -- ehhh. nine after 5:00.

cloudy skies over the district after a stormy night for a lot of us. >> and tom, you can already feel the stick in the air. >> yeah, humidity has been really hanging in. good morning. getting a few light scattered sprinkles across the western and northern suburbs. one shower here southeast of cambridge, but there is a thundershower pulling northeast of charlottesville. just on a track to move into spotsylvania county over the next 45 minutes. near fredericksburg by about 6:00. expect a brief downpour with thunder and lightning. not a severe storm. there is capitol hill under a cloudy sky. you can see the humidity hanging in the air. by 8:00, we'll be in the mid to upper 70s. by noontime, mid-80s. and then hitting low 90s between 3:00 and 5:00. and by then, we could get some scattered thundershowers and thunderstorms rolling through. probably not as strong as yesterday. a look at the rain chances for the week ahead coming up at

rescuers are still trying to find anybody who survived. french officials say the good ploes was li explosion was likely caused by a gas leak. emergency workers did imagine to pull ten people out of the rubble, all seriously hurt. i'm molette green at the live desk following a developing story. two teens in serious condition after falling from a carnival ride. these pictures just into the newsroom. it happened at a church bazaar in el paso, texas. the two teens fell more than 12 feet last night. they had to be rushed to the hospital and then firefighters had to use a ladder to rescue a stranded rider. that is the latest from the live desk. all eyes will be on rich mopped tomorrow when a jury will begin to decide the fate of bob mcdonnell. by now you know he and his wife are on trial for corruption, accused of trading political favors for more than $150,000 in loans and gifts.

panhandle of west virginia. one thundershower passed across lower part of the bay. that has dissipated. a line of showers with thunder and lightning, not a severe storm, moving through orange county just about to come into spotsylvania county. that will be right near fredericksburg this about 35 minutes. and just east of culpepper, they're getting a shower with a little thunder and lightning, too. that will move into southern fauquier county and then into stafford county in about another half hour or so. so not a severe storm, just some downpours with morning thunder and lightning on this labor day morning moving through south of the metro area. and right now, it is a muggy morning. we're just in the mid and supper 70s most of the region. and that includes shenandoah valley all the way to the bay. mountains, a few locations have temperatures hovering in the upper 60s. and for this labor day, very humid day, hazy sunshine. by noontime after we get through

two new crashes to tell you about right now. 395 southbound at duke street, understand it was only one vehicle involved. and spoke with police about this one, outer loop at route 1 in prince george's county, just property damage. just one vehicle. so that is good. should be out of the way here soon. 50 at sandy point, if you're coming back from the beach, this is a good time to start your trip. 66 at nutley looking good, as well. into town headed into the city, no major problems. wider look at the beltway, also looking good. more live cameras coming up at 5:31. soon all of the kids will be back in school. always their safety is a big concern. >> that's right. especially that is true when it comes to the bus stop. chris clackum tells us about the growing problem of those distracted drivers. >> reporter: watch what happens last may when a school bus in minnesota stops to pick up a student. a system i truck flies past the

bus' lowered stop arm and flashing lights and on the shoulder headed right toward a 7th grader. >> he came here, wouldn't stop. so i just backed up a little. >> ass semiwent by, there is nothing but dust and i thought she was dead. all of a sudden her little face appeared. >> reporter: the truck driver turned himself in reportedlybei an example of a sudden surge of dangerous driving in school zones or around school buss that they blame mostly on distracted drivers. >> in 2013, 2 million more drivers passed school bus stop arms than they did in 2011. there is no question that distracted driving plays a role. >> reporter: much of that information is coming from school bus drivers and backed up by on-board video like this from west virginia. when the bus driver blows his horn, yells at the drivers of two cars oblivious to the bus.

look at stories making headlines right now, strong storms being blamed for hampering recovery efforts of a hiker killed by a huge boulder in montgomery county. starting today, you could be hit with a hefty fine if you're caught dumping trash where it shouldn't be. and people around the d.c. area cleaning up this morning after strong storms hit the region downing a number of trees. right now there are scattered showers away the d.c. area. a sign of what is to come on this labor day holiday. >> tom kierein has been tracking the conditions you'll have to

deal with in the day ahead. tom, what does it look like? >> feeling like summer this labor day. starting off this morning very humid. storm team 4 radar showing a few scattered sprinkles across northern virginia and into maryland, but there is one line of showers and thunder south of the metro area now eastern you culpepper county coming into southern fauquier and stafford and spotsylvania. this will be near fredericksburg in about 25 minutes. there is one far south of there that will pass into the northern neck of virginia over the next hour or so. not a severe storm, just some brief heavy downpours with thunder and lightning as it rolls on through between now and around 6:00 to 6:30 this morning. here is the timing on any other showers. later this morning, only a very small chance. as we get into the afternoon, by noon, partly sunny. be maybe scattered areas of green a passing shower. then thundershowers developing farther east between 3:00 across northern virginia and maryland and district all the way until

weapons tests the north 45s has been conducting this year. defense ministry official says the projectile flew about 135 miles before landing in the waters off the northeast coast this morning. no one was hurt. a touching tribute this weekend for a decorated combat pilot who lost his life doing what he loved most. lieutenant colonel promised his wife that he'd plant roses in her garden to make her birthday on saturday. but the man nicknamed moose died when his jet crashed on wednesday near the border. so his fellow air men from the massachusetts air national guard carried out his promise, they planted 40 rose bushes in karen's garden. thorn five people in maryland are recovering after the boat they were on exploded. this happened in ocean pines maryland not far from ocean city. take a look at this picture. you can see the smoke just pouring in to the sky. the boat was destroyed in

they are offering as much as $25,000 to help find and convict him or her. the person shot willard shelton sunday morning on pomeroy road. shelton died. if you have any information, call d.c. police. police in ferguson, missouri have started wearing body cameras. officers activated them saturday during a protest march. the devices are attached to police uniforms, they record both audio and video. the march was the latest in memory of michael brown, he was shot and killed on august 9. those cameras were donated. the coast guard has suspended its search for a pilot who blacked out and crashed his plane. engines and the wheel were found, but they say little chance of finding anything else. the shawl plane left wisconsin and scheduled to land in monassas but veered off course. it flew into redirected air

space and fighter jets scrambled to escort the plane out. those air men confirmed the pilot was the only person on board and he was unconscious. they followed the plane until it ran out of gas and it crashed into the atlantic ocean. plane is registered to a man from wisconsin. prince william county facing a nearly $6 million budget shortfall. "washington post" reporting the county ended the last fiscal year $5.9 million in the red. county officials say the shortfall is due to a tax relief program for disabled veterans and also blame the government shutdown and lower sales and property tax revenues. county spokesperson says the shortfall will be covered by a reserve fund. richard henry lee elementary will reopen tomorrow at its normal time. people were dismissed early friday because of a feral cat wandering around the building. school officials say no one has seen the cat since and they have not detected any evidence of

feeding areas nearby. a warm welcome for tony stewart this weekend. stewart returned to competition for the first time yesterday since the death of fellow racecar driver kevin ward jr.. the racing star was met with a round of applause as you can see back from the crowd at the atlanta motor speedway right before the start of last night's race. stewart was in seclusion for several weeks after his racecar hit and killed ward at a track in upstate new york earlier this month. a man was arrested at the university of texas accused of flying a drone over the stadium during a college football game. this happened on saturday. that drone right there spotted in the sky during the second half of the game between texas and north texas. police were able to find the operator, ordered him to land the aircraft. the man was eventually taken in for questioning and later released. no charges have been filed. robert griffin iii back at baylor university not the way you might be thinking, though.
