at 6:00, a busy d.c. road closed in one direction. megan hk gramcgrath will show u work being done. and hiker trapped in montgomery county. why crews had to call off the rescue before they could get to him. and we're in for another round of storms today, but they will look different than the ones we saw last night. tom kierein is here to walk us through what to expect. >> we have a cluster of showers and thunder passing south of washington. that is tracking off to the north and east. these areas you see in the yellows and oranges and reds, that is will heavy rain with a little bit of thunder and lightni lightning. these are not severe storms. they're heading over toward charles county and st. mary's

county over the next hour. downpours and thunder and lightning coming on you through. and today, it will be a short sleeve day as we say good-bye to summer. a steamy afternoon. another hot day coming up. and some afternoon storms are looking likely. probably not as strong as they were yesterday. and this morning, off to a mild and muggy start. it's around 70 shenandoah valley into the mountains, closer to washington, mid-70s around the bay, southern maryland, northern neck. and the eastern shore. next weather and traffic on the 1s, a look at the hour by hour where he do where hedown of the changes on the way. want to show folks the stores left plenty of damage behind in bethesda. several trees went down near bradley boulevard and burning tree road. they took down some power lines. pepco crews were out last night making repairs. several thousand had no power, but the number down to about 300

customers this morning. let's get a look at your traffic with melissa mollet. >> want to tell you about a new accident here bw parkway further than we typically talk about. but southbound at 195, the ramp to eastbound 195 blocked from an overturned vehicle. beltway at river road, no problems there. 50 east of the beltway, actually looking good. a wider look at things, no problems into or around town. inner loop and outer loop both looking quite good at this point. remember we do have the situation missouri avenue westbound at georgia avenue in northwest, we have megan hk gra mcgrath out there this morning. >> reporter: within the last hour, we've had additional work crews arrive on the scene. and you can see behind me, they're down in the hole digging out the electrical lines. the underground electrical line, they had a problem with it develop overnight. they have to make the repairs

because of the big hole in the road here, it's having an impact. missouri avenue heading west is closed. you will not be able to go west. we also have one lane of georgia avenue. right hand turn lane is blocked off so crews can do their work, as well. this will be the case for a while. they literally just started to make the repair within the last hour. so it is going to be a while. if you normally take missouri avenue, you'll want do something else this morning. megan mcgrath, news 4. i'm knmolette green at the live desk. would teens are in serious condition after falling from a carnival ride. we've learned that ride was at least 40 feet tall. that from the el paso times. this happened at an annual festival at el paso. the two teens fell more than 12 feet last knight. they had to be rushed to the hospital. and firefighters had to use a

ladder to rescue others stranded. that is the latest from the live desk. back to you. a hiker dead after he was found trapped under a huge boulder in montgomery county. that happened on offutt island. county rescue crews tried to help the 25-year-old man, but the storms proved to be a major obstacle for that rescue effort. >> our crews had to seek shelter, we protected the victim. eight rescue technicians remained on the scene including pair head di paramedics. >> investigators have still trying to figure out how the hiker got trapped. soon we will learn whether virginia's former first couple will face decades in prison. bob and maureen mcdonnell are accused of corruption. jurors will have five week of testimony and evidence to weigh. prosecutors say they traded political favors for thousands of dollars in gifts there businessman jonnie williams.

welcome back. there is a new study out that says medications used to treat attention deficit hyper being a a different disorder do not stunt your children's growth. that study found that al though boys treated with adhd drugs for more than three months had a lower later growth spurt than their peers, there was no difference in their adult height. there was also no link between how long children took those medications and their final height. for years we have heard a glass of wine or maybe two glasses of wine each day can prevent heart disease. now new research finds moderate wine drinking is only protective this people who exercise. that is according to a new study from the czech republic. researchers assigned 150 people to drink a specific amount of red or white wine every day for a year. researchers say after that year, the only people who had any benefit were those who drank wipe and exercised. we're assuming they didn't do both of them together. >> on that treadmill with a

. a little bit of action to show you on radar. it will look a lot different as the day continues. tom kierein tracking the storms and when the heat wave will finally end. two people are dead after a building exploded in a pair recent suburb. rescuers are still working to find survivors. the explosion was likely cause by a gas leak. a child and 80-year-old woman were killed. five children are still missing. ten others seriously hurt when they were pulled from the rubble. now to a developing story in libya. there has been a security breach at the u.s. embassy. this youtube video showing what is believed to be a militia group having a pool party. no american staff members are there. they were evacuated last month

because of fighting in the area. the embassy's main compound is a mile away from the building. and u.s. officials say that one still looks to be secure. police are searching for clues after a murder at a popeye's. this happened on ritchie high y highway. the victim's name is luzviminda monreal. she worked the night shift there on saturday. the popeye's manager found her body yesterday in the back storage room. police tell us she had significant injuries but they don't have a motive for the murder. a touching tribute for a deck eighted combat pilot who lost his life doing what he loved most. he had promised his wife he would plant roses in her garden to mark her birthday on saturday but he died in a crash. so his fellow airmen carried out his promise, they planted 40

rose bushes in karen's garden. the ntsb is investigating a plane crash in colorado that killed five people. the small plane was flying just outside boulder when it came down. witnesses say it was flying low and began sputtering before it hit the ground. one woman snapped these pictures. she's turned them over to help with the investigation. 17 after the hour. today is the last day gamblers will get to place their bets at the revel casino in atlantic casino. hotel operations shut down at 11: 11:00 this morning. gambling ends tomorrow. it cost horn $2 billion on build and only stayed open for about two year. experts say business decisions like a smoking ban and lack of loyalty programs hampered success. and this morning show boat shut its doors yesterday afternoon after 27 years this business. between show boat and revel,

more than 5,000 people are now out of jobs, another 1,000 workers will be laid off when the trump plaza casino closes on september 16th. the state of new jersey working to help laid off workers find new jobs. plants might start showing up on your desk this week. a new study says greenery in the work lays can increase row du productivity by 15%. concentration and satisfaction immediately went up. the reason for the increase may be because foliage absorbs dust and bug from the air improving air quality. and potted plants are reduce the number of sick days taken at work. >> and they made the point a little greenery or even color can also serve to enhance your mood a little bit. and that might help with productivity and keep you firing

traffics around the area. i'm molette green at the live desk. just learning about an emergency landing for a flight out of grand rapids, michigan. it was headed to orlando, but it had to make an emergency stop in greenville, south carolina. we have learned there was a problem with cabin pressure. passengers had to use oxygen masks and safety belts, but no injuries. again the flight landing safely sometime last night in greenville, south carolina. that flight rescheduled to take off later this morning. 6:22. distracted drivers are a growing concern as kids head back to school. >> chris clackum tells us more about the danger that can happen at the bus stop. >> reporter: watch what happens last may when a school bus in minnesota stops to pick up a student.

a semi truck flies past the bus' lowered stop arm and flashing lights and on the shoulder headed right toward a 7th grader. >> he came here, wouldn't stop. so i just backed up a little. >> as the semi went by, there is nothing but dust and i thought she was dead. all of a sudden her little face appeared. >> reporter: the truck driver turned himself in reportedly admitting to being distracted, an example of a sudden surge of dangerous driving in school zones or around school buses that they blame mostly on distracted drivers. >> in 2013, 2 million more drivers passed school bus stop arms than they did in 2011. there is no question that distracted driving plays a role. >> reporter: much of that information is coming from school bus drivers and backed up by on-board video like this from west virginia. when the bus driver blows his horn, yells at the drivers of two cars oblivious to the bus.

otherwise lots of clouds around. by noontime, these areas in green, these are light showers. around 3:00, we could get some thundershowers popping up northern virginia and across much of north central maryland and away the metro area. between 3:00 and 5:00 p.m., thundershowers roll on through. they pass to the south and east of the metro area by 5:00 or 6:00. and then cross the bay and pretty much dissipate after that as we get into this evening. a look coming up next weather and traffic on the 1s at the hour by hour changes on the way. melissa is looking in the any road delays. >> we're looking good right now. and we should always look like this. 66 headed in to town, no problems at all into the city. i wish it would run that same way. wouldn't that be nice? taking a look here, this is the only real slow spoin the area. 395 inside the beltway, running about 42 miles an hour.

beltway at comesville rocolesvi along. we have a brand new disabled car 395 the at edsall road. i understand they are trying to get it off to the right side of the roadway. that perhaps causing some of the slowdowns as you approach edsall road this morning. i'm back in ten minutes at 6:1.# spresh mounting on president obama to do something about the growing isis threat. he says air strikes are on the back burner, but lawmakers are urging the president to act. tracie potts has the latest developments from capitol hill. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. lawmakers say the threat is not going away, so they're concerned while the president is weighing his options and trying to build a coalition the threat from isis could get worse. wait is the official word from the white house, but some republicans argue there is no time.

>> we can't wait forever and the longer we do wait, the stronger isis becomes. >> reporter: even some democrats worry about waiting too long. >> he's very cautious. maybe in this instance too cautious. >> reporter: president obama says he has no strategy for dealing with isis militants in syria. >> the president of the united states is either in denial or overwhelmed. one of the two. >> reporter: the policy republicans argue has been to defend iraq but not to engage in syria. >> that is a decision, that is a policy, that is a strategy. and it's in the working. >> reporter: but democrats fear rushing in too soon with military power could be a big mistake. >> if we simply come in and start bombing isis, we run the risk of forcing sunnis into their camp. >> reporter: the president wants to build a coalition of allies first. >> we can't be sheriff of the whole world. it's france, the brits, other

countries need to work with us, including countries like saudi arabia. >> reporter: one big concern, how many americans are fighting with isis and whether they're planning to bring that fight back home. the president says no air strikes are imminent. aaron. >> tracie potts on capitol hill for us. this morning police are looking for someone who killed a man in southeast d.c.. it happened over the weekend on pomeroy road right off stanton road. willard shelton died. police right now are offering as much as $25,000 for information that leads them to catch and convict a killer. there is a growing memorial for a montgomery county high school student killed in a tragic car accident. shawn gangloff died following the crash saturday morning. he was 15. he and two others were in a convertible when it carashed in olney. police say the car hit a tree

and light pole before it rolled over. grief counselors will be at sherwood high school to help students deal with the loss. >> i feel real sad about it. this little kid was like -- could have been my little brother or someone in my family. >> the other two boys in the car are still in the hospital. they have serious injuries. police are still working to figure out what caused the car to go off the road and slam into a tree. prince william county facing a nearly $6 billion shortfall. they ended the last fiscal year $5.9 million in the red. county officials say it is due to a tax relief program for disabled veterans and also the federal government shutdown and lower sales and property tax revenues. the shortfall will be covered by a reserve fund. robert griffin iii is back

the hole there. this has been and ongoing situation through the night. a problem develops with this underground cable. testify had to dig it up. they're still in the process of making repairs. and we're now seeing a traffic impact as things start to pick up. missouri avenue westbound is closed. so closed completely westbound direction right here at georgia avenue. we also have one lane, the right hand turn lane, of georgia avenue closed as well so they can make these repairs. it will be a while. they have been down in that hole starting to get the repairs under way for about an hour of that or so. so they have a lot of work ahead of them, so if you drive through the area, there will be shall traffic tie ups this morning. missouri closed westbound and we are seeing the impact on georgia and things are starting to stack up a little bit at this point. back to you guys in the studio. crews braved bad weather to try to save a hiker, but the hirk died a

matter of fact. wider look, you can see we look quite good. you can see we get a little slow gw parkway there a couple miles from the city probably. not the greatest thing there. beltway at pennsylvania avenue, moving right along. 66 at route 50, also looking quite good. 270 montrose road southbound, looking quite good. northbound, too. south bound germantown road to the beltway running 16 miles an hour at this point this morning. remember to always follow us @first4traffic. the ast guard has suspended its search for a pilot who apparently blacked out and crashed his plane o the coast of virginia before search teams found an engine and wheel, but say there is little chance of finding anything else. it left wisconsin saturday morning, scheduled to land in manassas, but apparently veered off course. investigators say it flew into redirected air space over washington. two f-16 fighter jets
