11:01 am
will get. hi, tom. >> yeah, got to 96 yesterday. not quite as hot today, but certainly hotter than the average high of 84 later this afternoon. there's a live view from the storm team 4 national harbor camera. great day to take a ride on the capital wheel there. beautiful views there from the top. we've got quite a bit of humidity, though, still hanging in the air. storm team 4 radar showing a few lingering sprinkles the northern neck of virginia after we did have some showers rolling through earlier this morning south of the metro area. right now just a few clouds around, don't have any rain around the region and temperatures just past 11:00 now are heating up. we're in the low to mid-80s much of the region. going to climb about another 10 degrees for highs by later this afternoon. a look at that and how long this heat wave will last in just a couple of minutes. back to you, angie. >> sounds good, tom, thanks. it's labor day and there are a whole lot of activities going on around here. in montgomery county, the town of kensington is celebrating its 47th annual labor day parade.
11:02 am
the parade has been going on for about an hour now, but there's plenty of festivities happening all throughout the day. megan mcgrath is live from what is considered kensington's signature event. hi, megan. >> reporter: well, good morning, angie. yeah, it is definitely their signature event. you can see there's a big crowd that's turned out for this parade. what better way to mark labor day than with an old-fashioned parade and that's exactly what this is. this has been happening here in kensington for 47 years. you can see the crowd here. many of the folks here actually live in the neighborhood. they have come out of their houses, brought their chairs and their blankets, but other people actually have heard about the parade and came from surrounding cities, so they drove here to take it all in. you can see we've got a marching band going by us right now and there are all kinds of floats. you see the fire department, the volunteer fire department go by. there are folks that we spoke to earlier who have actually been coming here for over a decade and they now come and bring
11:03 am
their kids too. >> i got the shade and the view. the parade comes this way because it's that way to the viewing stand. >> what keeps you coming back? >> just the tradition. we have friends that live here in kensington so we meet them down here every year and just enjoy the parade. it's a lot of fun. >> what's your favorite part about the parade? >> candy. >> they throw the candy? >> reporter: and you can see the parade is in full swing here. i should mention if there are some road closures in the area, connecticut avenue northbound, they are going to be detouring traffic off of the northbound side and running two-way traffic on the southbound lanes, so keep that in mind if you're traveling through the area. also when the parade is over, that doesn't mean the fun is over. they have food vendors and art tents and the like down on howard and armory so after taking in the parade, check all that out as well. reporting live, megan mcgrath, news 4. back to you. >> it's a hot day but a great day for all that fun, thanks. well, there's a parade today

11:05 am
anyone coming from the north, southbound in maryland 95 there, obviously going to be a little skep sketchy as well as the evening progresses. otherwise we look quite good. 50 again right here at the bay bridge, no major problem there. 95 at mine road moving right along as well. let's keep our fingers crossed that it's going to stay like this the rest of the day. don't think it's going to happen, i think it's going to be pretty nasty, but we can keep our fingers crossed, right? >> it doesn't hurt to try. thanks. heads up if you are taking metro. track work is continuing today. the bethesda medical center stations remain closed on the red line. buses will operate between friendship heights as well as grovener strathmore. the stations reopen tomorrow morning. metro is operating on a sunday schedule. stations will stay open until midnight. off peak fares are in effect all day and parking is free at all metro garages. underground cables have been causing some big headaches this morning along missouri avenue in

no american staff members are there. they were evacuated last month because of fighting in the area. the embassy's main compound is about a mile away from this building. u.s. officials say that it still looks to be secure. crews braved bad weather to try and save a hiker in montgomery county, but that hiker died yesterday after becoming trapped under a huge boulder in the potomac. county rescue crews raced to free the man but their efforts were slowed because of all of the storms that rolled through. the man died before crews could rescue him. >> our crews had to seek shelter. we protected the victim. eight rescue technicians remained on the scene, including paramedics, while others sought shelter. >> investigators are still trying to figure out exactly how the hiker got trapped. the coast guard has suspended its search for a pilot who blacked out and crashed his plane off the coast of virginia. search teams found the engine and a wheel but they say that there's little chance of finding

anything else. the small plane left wisconsin saturday morning. it was scheduled to land in manassas, but at one point veered offcourse. investigators say it flew into restricted airspace over washington, d.c., and then two f-16 fighter jets scrambled to escort the plane out and that's when they learned the pilot was unconscious. the plane later crashed off the coast. prince william county is facing a nearly $6 million budget shortfall.
