tracking the hottest temperatures of the summer. but first at 6:00. breaking news, a woman run over and killed in riverdale. and tonight, we have learned that a 3-year-old child was also seriously injured, happening at riverdale road in kennelworth avenue. >> reporter: this is a very active scene as you can see right now, this is the scene on east kennelworth avenue, here on the 1500 block of riverdale road in riverdale. here as you can see, it appears that a female was walking across the road with a 3-year-old child. you can see it was eastbound on riverdale road when they were struck. and it looks like they were in the crosswalk but that will be determined by an accident reconstruction crew. now, an adult female is dead, dead on the scene. a child, we only understand as the 3-year-old female has been taken to the hospital in critical condition.

johnson in the weather center, what is the word tonight? >> the word tonight if there is barbecuing going on, we're done with the showers and thunderstorms and unfortunately we're not done with the heat. at 4:30 p.m., we had showers and thunderstorms moving through right around d.c., in lancaster, right there is the north area, heading southeast away from our area. ocean city, maybe a shower or two. the big story really is the heat and high humidity. topped out at 95 degrees at reagan international. the high temperatures throughout the area, just over 90, leesburg, down through fredericksburg. and one thing we have not had was three days back-to-back that was 90 degrees or higher, so i think ironically enough, this could be the heat stretch of the

summer. we'll tell you when it breaks and when we have showers and thunderstorms in the forecast coming up tonight. new developments tonight in the death of a restaurant manager, a woman went to her job for the restaurant she worked at for 25 years. >> hours later she was dead, her body was found in the back room in anne arundel county. her death was ruled a homicide. and the sign on the front tells the public the restaurant is closed. while the police search for clues her friends are devastated and some even fear for their own safety tonight. the victim lived in laurel, maryland, but no family member answered when we knocked on the door, the neighbors are unserved by the news. >> she was a good lady, why somebody killed her i don't know. >> reporter: the detectives are going over surveillance video at the popeyes there where they believe the video could lead

them to the killer in this case. police were called here 8:00 a.m. sunday morning when the manager saw the body in the back stock area of the store. she apparently was killed after closing saturday night. police are not talking about the manner of her death or motive for her murder. >> we don't have any information from the police yet. okay? that is all i can say. >> reporter: the victim was known as minda, and made friends easily. >> i mean, she was a sweet, caring lady and always had a smile on her face. but for somebody to murder her, that was cruel. she was such a beautiful person, inside and out. >> reporter: she was with popeyes for 25 years and worked her way up to manager, and every day she watered the plants there and next door and would go to the pizza shop and talk to her friend, candy. now candy spoke with us but doesn't want us to show her face because after minda's murder,

she doesn't want us to show her face. >> i am still in shock, i can't believe it happened to her out of all people. i mean, i liked her, i loved her, everybody else did. >> reporter: detectives worked through state sunday and monday, sorting through the clues they hope will lead to an arrest soon. chris gordon, news 4. and we're also following developments overseas tonight where nato is getting ready for action against ukraine. president obama is meeting in wales today, nato's chief said they will be asked to prepare a high readiness military force. the unit will be made up of 28,000 troops who will be from a variety of countries, and could be put on short notice to help nato defend themselves against any security threat. the president also expected to turn to nato for help in dealing with the threat from isis in places like iraq and syria.

as nbc's brian mooar reports, the escalating situation with isis is making it tougher for the president to focus on what is going on here at home. >> reporter: on this labor day, president obama was my milwaukee pushing for a minimum wage increase. >> i am not asking for the moon i just want a good deal for american workers. >> reporter: he is hoping to fire up voters for the congressional elections in november. but as the white house fights to keep the senate and the democrats in hand, this is the battle of the moment. the decision on whether to hit the enemy on the home turf in syria. >> it is not hard to put the jihadists back on their home turf and deciding what to do with them. >> reporter: what is difficult is the conflict that president obama did not want in the first place, what he is considering is

was on the team for the november election. but now lindenfeld is out of the campaign, his office was involved in a scandal in the 2007 philadelphia race of the congressman. with allegations of an unreported million dollar campaign loan and misuse of federal grant funds. bowser, who had no public events today declined to comment to news 4 on lindenfeld, she commented that, i'm quite surprised by the allegations out of philadelphia. tom no longer has a role on the campaign. lindenfeld declined to comment to news 4 this weekend. and independent mayoral candidate holing a barbecue on southern avenue, a site where he has clashed with bowser over low income housing issues. catanya was troubled by the

allegations on the housing scandal. >> mr. lindenfeld has been involved in all of her campaigns and it raises questions on how he runs the elections generally. there. >> were there allegations of any wrongdoing on any of the campaigns. and virginia's former first couple could face decades in prison if they're convicted of corruption this week. and in less than 24 hours a jury will decide their fate. they will have five weeks of evidence and testimony to look through. prosecutors say former virginia governor and his wife traded political favors for more than $150,000 in gifts. the mcdonald's defense attorney says the couple's marriage was too broken for them to conspire. news 4 has been covering every step of this trial and jury deliberations, and julie richmond and david culver will

keep you updated on twitter and the news. and singer chris brown will be expected to enter a guilty plea in his assault case in d.c. superior court. brown and his body guard were charged with punching a fan at the hotel in downtown d.c. after the homecoming last year. sources tell news 4 that the singer reached a plea deal in the case, meaning he likely would avoid jail time. a judge found his bodyguard guilty earlier this year. and police in ferguson, missouri are joining the growing list of police officers who are wearing body cameras. this follows the outcry over michael brown being shot in missouri. officers in laurel, maryland, also used the body cameras to document what officers do and see while they're on duty. and chaos in libya as a militia storms the u.s. embassy

gone -- developing tonight, fairfax police are trying to figure out how a man ended up dead early this morning. just 4's jackie benson has more. >> reporter: this is a garden apartment complex that has its own parking lot. we're told the man was found about 2 a.m. this morning. his name has not been released. and police say he had trauma to the upper body but they did not elaborate. right now detectives say they're calling this a suspicious death. >> at this point the investigators have reason to believe the victim and suspects were known to each other. so we see no reason to suggest that there is a threat to the public safety. >> reporter: this complex does not have any security cameras, something that would have been helped to detect it. live in fairfax county, jackie benson, news 4.

jackie, thank you, a developidevelop ing story in libya, there has been a break in the compound. this video shows a group appearing to have a pool party at the diplomat house. they have lost control of the capital now and the meeting outside the town of tripoli. in a country free-falling into chaos? militia fighters celebrate their takeover of an american diplomat compound. nbc news can't authenticate this video, but the u.s. ambassador to libya says it appears to show a residential annex. the homes there in the compound quickly evacuated last month, all the u.s. staff evacuating as the fighting became intense, the government who now controls the annex are allies to the militants. this comes on the heels of the

death of ambassador chris stevens and two others almost two years ago. tripoli is the battleground, for weeks, rival militias are fighting for control of the airport. the area, in crisis, inflamed further by the airstrikes in the gulf area and egypt. once again, the rival governments and hundreds of militias and another foreign policy headache with stability a distant prospect. and it is just one headache after another for the obama administration. not to mention ukraine, the fighting and handling of libya, the fighting contentious for years, still an issue. all right, back with weather tonight, the storms today, tonight, nothing like what we saw last night. >> nothing like what we saw last night. now, we did have a brief run on

he was trying to venture out when the boat suddenly burst into flames. his family along with two others fell into the water. edwards friends were flown to the burn unit at john hopkins. and a couple of teens in texas were injured at a carnival ride, they fell 12 feet from a ride that had malfunctioned. one was seriously injured, while the other had minor injuries, this happened at a church bazarre in el paso. firefighters had to rescue others stranded on the ride. federal officials are helping the local investigators to determine the cause of the accident. there are just a few hours left to soak in the last bit of summer, but for some people, this labor day weekend was not about rest and relaxation. abc's jay gray has more on the parties crashed by mother nature. >> reporter: for millions across the country, it has been a

. a first at 6:30, it all started with two brothers hiking but ended in tragedy. tonight, we're learning new details about a deadly rock climbing accident that claimed the life of a young maryland man. this all unfolded yesterday on hermit island. news 4 has more. >> reporter: for the second day in a row, montgomery county fire and rescue teams were out here on the billy goat trail to rescue a hiker.

yesterday it was two brothers hiking on an island in the middle of the river when things went very wrong. the 25-year-old man and his 14-year-old brother were seen hiking the bee section, and somehow they made their way across the river onto one of the small islands. >> the waters of the potomac and the areas around those waters can be dangerous. it is potentially dangerous. and each year, people are injured and some lose their lives. >> reporter: a local kayaker was in the area yesterday. he did not want to talk on camera out of respect for the family. the kayaker and his family are on that beach, having a picnic when they saw the two brothers walk across these rocks over to hermit island. it was shortly after that he heard the rockslide and within a second he heard the screams for help. he described the rockslide sounding like a car crash and then an explosion. he and his family raced to the two hikers, finding 25-year-old

ryan kalder trapped, the victim had a massive head wound and the kayaker knew it was life-threatening. the rescue boat arrived shortly after but it was too late. as rescuers tried to recover the body the storm came in. the kayakers said lightning struck within a few yards of the rescue site. he described the thunder and lightning as sounding like a war zone. rescue teams had to shelter in place until it passed. back on the billy goat trail today hikers were aware of yesterday's actions and the tragic results. >> on the parking trail, we would certainly not go beyond our means. but on flat surfaces where it looks fairly stable, yeah, we're fine. >> now the hiker is expected to be okay. but to give you an idea of how dangerous it is here along the billy goat trail, of all the drownings that happened along

the great gorge and d.c., it was never intended to happen. it is where they slipped on a rock and fell. right now storm team 4 is tracking the high heat and possibility of more rains. let's go to storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson on the heat and how much rain we'll get. >> we'll see slightly higher temperatures and a lot of heat. a lot of folks will take to the water to cool off. certainly during the hottest part of the day. for our evening, though, quite warm and it will be humid. so if you're dining out the showers, it will be sticky at 82 to 87 degrees. meanwhile, again tomorrow, temperatures are likely to be even higher across thearea. the heat index will be somewhere around a 100. storms after 2:00 p.m. temperatures between 90 and 95 degrees. and folks, we'll be sweating all week long, the temperatures

expected to continue all week long. in fact, even saturday i have the high heat. the average temperature this time of year, 85 degrees, for the next couple of days feeling hotter than july. in the next couple of days we'll look at the heat index as well as the upcoming weekend. and we're learning more about a man killed in a freak tree incident. the 75-year-old man was grilling here on daisy road when the tree fell on top of him. investigators say he was visiting from annapolis. three of the man's grandchildren were also hurt but they will be okay. part of the tree also went through the roof of the house and the family was forced to find somewhere else to stay. right now, a 14-year-old boy in falls church is facing charges for sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl. the girl told police she was attacked friday evening at cherry hill park. an adult saw what happened and

stopped the boy, but the little girl said he came back again. she screamed loudly enough for people to hear her, the teen ran away but police quickly arrested him. oh, oh [ bleep ]. no one is talking about the gunm gambling at the casino that just opened over the weekend, instead they talk about the fight that just happened. the people were standing around to get pizza, a witness says that a fight broke out in line and a woman sprayed mace before security guards stepped in. 15,000 people visited the casino on its opening night last tuesday. while business is booming in maryland it is the last night of gambling at the newest casino. the rebel will officially close. the casino's hotel shut down this morning. coming just two years after the $2.4 billion complex opened.

. late this afternoon, apple and the fbi are investigating the cloud accounts that were hacked. and photos being put on line. photos were released yesterday of lawrence on the cam, with photos showing other celebrities in compromising positions. the computer giant is not explaining how the hackers could have obtained the images. lawrence's publicist says that they will prosecute anybody publishing the photos. and the website has more information on how to protect yourself from the hackers. you need a strong, unique password that is not just a

changes transportation-wise all over the region. in fairfax county, metro's new silver line now an option. could it have an impact on the nearby dulles toll road? in montgomery county, the emergency road work on connecticut avenue has wrapped up. now smooth pavement there. in d.c., be aware, d-dot will start work on the 16th street bridge over military road this fall. and prince george's county, a reminder that some school buses now equipped with stop sign cameras to catch drivers who pass the stop sign. a lot to remember, and yes some anxiousness for commuters. >> i have a feeling tomorrow will be pretty dicey. >> remember, extra time and good luck out there. in fairfax county, news 4. new at 6:00. petco crews in the district trying to fix a problem with an underground cable having to dig a huge hole at the corner of missouri avenue to get the
