right now at 6:00 a.m., rise and sunshine. it's time to go back to school in northern virginia and in fairfax county meaning big changes to the calendar. we'll walk you through what is new this year. and it is a hot one to kick things off this morning. get ready for an even hotter day ahead. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein here to help us get through the first ride to school and even busier ride to work for everybody else. tom, good morning. good morning. the weather headlines for this second day of september, short sleeve summer day. hairstyles by mr. humidity. and umbrella afternoon. as some storms may be rolling through during the afternoon. it is a mild and muggy start. nearby suburbs in prince george's county now the mid-70s. low to mid-70s in fairfax, montgomery, the rest of northern virginia and much of maryland. well into the 70s. for the morning commute, walking

on to the metro bus and driving this morning, you will have temperatures in the mid-70s between now and 8:00 this morning. a little patchy fog, too, in some of the rural areas. watch out for that. just some fog hovering over open fields and drifting over some of the rural roads. then after that, fog dissipating between 8:00 and 10:00. very humid. by then it will be near 80 degrees. coming up at 6:11, your school bus stop forecast for this tuesday morning. now, melissa, any september slowdown yet? we are seeing slowdowns on 270 southbound heading out of frederick. you're pretty slow through clarksburg. opens back up there. at this point in the morning, not terrible. they think looking at 66 near falls church, not awful. a little slow 95 northbound in virginia. a wider look at things, you can see we look pretty good. a little slow on d.c. 295 passing 50. prince george's county side of the roadway is holding strong looking pretty good and still

green. at this point this morning, as i mentioned here, 95 northbound as you head through quantico, slow as well. we'll get chopper over the situation in potomac with the downed trees and wires with the road closure. back in ten minutes. thank you. 6:02. this last holdout for summer, we are heading back to school today with nearly 400,000 students across virginia. that includes loudoun, prince william, alexandria and fairfax county schools. news4's kristen wright is live in fairfax county with a look at the big changes coming to the school calendar this year. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, eun. one of the big changes coming to the school year is the new calendar. no more early release mondays for elementary students. that i will go to a full day on monday. sootding the so adding the hours allows them to change to a 990-hour school year. both are options by state law.

so what that means is that shifting to an hourly schedule is a way for the school district to build in 13 bad weather days into the calendar. so they don't have to add days at the end of the school year, which can of course sometimes be problematic. coming up at 6:30, superintendent dr. karen garza is going to join us live to talk more about the new calendar. and also about this new school. it's called bailey's upper elementary school. it's new for about 700 students this year. and doctor garza will join us live to talk more about the school and what students can expect this year. live in fairfax county, kristen wright, news4. in arlington, kids are heading back to school as well. school leaders want to make sure students start things off on the right foot. many leaders will walk to the elementary school today to remind people of the importance of pedestrian safety. the goal is to encourage walking as a good way to exercise and socialize. a reminder to everybody else,

watch out for students out and about today. we are going to be keeping an eye on the back to school situation for you all morning long. if there are traffic issue or school bus problems, we'll get the information out to you first on twitter. be sure to follow u us @news4today. in montgomery county, a car took out a garage door when it plowed into the side of the home. this is on randworth drive in germantown. it looks like the car ran into the side of the garage. the people inside told us the crash shook them up a little but everyone is okay. neighbors say an area up the road from the university of maryland where a mother was runover and killed needs more safety upgrades. this happened on riverdale road near the bw parkway yesterday afternoon. the woman was coming from the grocery store and witnesses say she was with her 3-year-old in the crosswalk when the car hit both of them. >> he was coming really pretty fast. the only thing that i saw and heard was the woman screamed and

grabbed the child. and after that i just saw her laying over there. >> the driver of the car is cooperating with police. the intersection is near a lot of stores. and while there are pedestrian crossing signs, neighbors say they would like to see more. the little girl remains in critical condition. today the jury will begin to decide whether the former virginia governor bob mcdonnell is innocent or guilty of corruption. right now bob mcdonnell and his wife are on trial accused of accepting thousands of dollars in gifts in exchange for political papers. they say their marriage was falling apart and they could not have conspired together. download the nbc washington app for breaking news on a verdict in this trial. soon you can use your ez pass on more lanes on the dulles toll road. they will turn 19 exact change lanes into ez pass only lanes today. work will begin with the exit to the westbound fairfax county parkway. if you don't have an ez pass, you can still use cash at one

we're not sure how it happened at this point but the plane left los angeles yesterday and turned around within 20 minutes and landed staffly. there's a new survey to say air traveler who is bring their own entertainment want to see a benefit from the airlines. 80% of the adults say bringing your own tablet to watch tv or a movie say they will saving the airline money. the charge is $8 for wi-fi access and $5 for movies mid-flit. we are talking heat and humidity. it's important for people to hear this heading back to school in virginia. >> this is from falls church, virginia. you can see this classroom getting ready for the young people to come back. and that's 78 degrees right now outside our studios. tom, it's going to be a hot return to virginia this morning.

6:15. students across north virginia are heading back to school. we have team coverage on the school and on the roads to keep you posted on everything to affect the morning. news4 transportation reporter adam tuss is joining us live where it's finding to be busy. traffic is picking up a little bit here. we are calling this the september slowdown because we are going to see traffic gradually pick up now day by day through september. let's take a look out the windshield camera here to see what we're looking at on 95 south in the area here. look to your left to see the traffic building northbound. we are doing a pretty good job moving at a good speed southbound in this area, but obviously everything on the left side is headed to the beltway and d.c. we are talking to some people over the last couple of days, teachers and students, how they get ready for getting back to school. people who are commuting to get back. and everyone had the best piece of advice, which is really some

easy advice. just give yourself extra time. over these next couple of days going through the next couple of weeks into the september slowdown, you're going to want to give yourself 5 to 10 more minutes just to get around to figure out and see how things are going to be out here on the roads. but for right now, moving pretty good right now on the roads. we'll keep track of it all day for you. remember, #septemberslowdown to see what you're seeing out there. students and parents are shocked after the sudden ousting of a high school football coach at loudoun high school. danny mcgrath was fired over the weekend. mcgrath fired at loudoun valley for seven years and recently voiced concerns about concussion safety and wanting to use helmet september so sensors to see how hard his players were being hit. no reason was given for his firing. hey, here you go. i want to show you some adorable elementary school photos.

before here, and in this case, there was a traveler who had their head down on the tray table. the woman directly in front of her wanted to recline her seat, that did not go over well. this is what happened next. >> the woman sitting next to me knitting tried to reclimb her seat back and the woman behind her started screaming and swearing and the flight attendant came over to exacerbate what was going on. she demanded the flight land. >> that flight did land safely over jacksonville. we are told no one on board was hurt but this is not a new problem here. just last week two similar incidents occurred including a high-profile case where a knee defender was used to block the person in front of them from reclining their seat. this is a recurring problem up in the skies. a prince george's county mother wants to know why anyone would want to kill her son. 20-year-old everett brown was found shot and killed saturday

afternoon. foreign policy will be the focus of the trip other than discussing the isis threat. the president will also send a strong message to vladimir putin to reverse his decision in ukraine. 21 states and the district don't meet emergency planning standards for children. the report from save the children judges four disaster scenarios including state disaster and relocation plans. the evacuation plans for children with special needs and multiple disaster plans for all k-12 schools. d.c. failed having multiple disaster plans for schools. virginia failed to have an escape plan for children with disabilities. maryland is the only state of 29 states that passed. the report says the biggest need of improvement, regulations for smaller childcare businesses like day care. all right. well, it is now time to take a look at the heat and humidity creeping back into our

evening. a mild and muggy morning in the 70s for prince george's and the district. whys today reaching the low to mid-90s. around the metro area, we are well into the mid-90s into the afternoon. the forecast for tomorrow, hazy sunshine near 90. then humidity returns on thursday and friday with highs near 90 into the weekend. hot and humid saturday with afternoon storms. sunday and monday, turning less humid. and a bit cooler. next weather and traffic on the 1s with the school day forecast. off to school on this tuesday morning, melissa has breaking news on the roads. breaking news outer loop of the beltway at georgia avenue with a brand new crash from police. it is slow as you approach that. hopefully getting that out of the way shortly. 270 as we take a trip down from 70, if you're starting there, all the way until clarksburg road you're slow going 40 miles per hour. still moving though, a wider look looking just le slow.

prince george's county is hanging in there looking pretty good. no major problems. a little slow on branch heading to the beltway. 66 at 95, taking a live look at 95. chopper 4 is over 66 right there at 50 moving forth in a few minutes. travel time 66 east between the beltway and gw parkway is running at 12 minutes. not so bad. it's a very humid this morning at the bus stop this morning. no problems weatherwise, but caution for recess and dismissal because of heat and humidity. by recess time, i give it a c. it will be hot and humid into the mid-80s. by dismissal time, you may need the umbrella. pack an umbrella in the backpack this morning with a chance of scattered storms by dismissal time. temperatures by then will be into the mid-90s. the next weather and traffic on the 1s at 6:41. a look at the hour-by-hour forecast and the changes over the next 24 hours. thank you, tom. thank you, tom. it is now
