news 4 at 11:00 begins with severe weather. >> powerful summer storms bring lightning, strong wind and heavy downpours to d.c., virginia and maryland. >> here is a look at the storms. we have reports of tree damage and 5500 pepco and dominion virginia customers without power. doug is tracking showers around the area now. >> we begin now with team 4 coverage with darcy spencer, live in montgomery county near georgia avenue and the icc. darcy? >> we are live on norbeck not far from the leisure world retirement community. this tells the story of what happened tonight with this storm. the wind came through, literally snapped the pole. it came down to the ground bringing power lines with it. we spoke to a resident not far from here. she was here when the storm hit. she had to seek shelter in her

bathroom. >> it was not a 50 miles per hour wind. it was like, whoo! i said, oh, my god. is that a tornado? >> reporter: jacquelyn jackson was home alone when the storm hit. she was so frightened she hid in a room in her home in montgomery county. >> it was so bad, i saw everything bending and i ran into the bathroom. i was very, very scared. >> outside, trees twisted and damaged. the fence, blown over. >> i came out and looked out the window. i saw uh my whole front yard was devastated. >> everybody's recycling bins are in my yard. >> reporter: lightning cracked, heavy rains poured and the fierce winds blew. what did you think when you saw this? >> worrieded, scared.

when i was coming home it wasn't raining hard then. i was afraid it would be something like this. >> reporter: crews worked on bradford road at norbeck where a tree fell on power lines. the pole snapped. even the street sign was knocked over. neighbors now wait to get the lights back on. you can see utility crews are here. they have a new power pole. they are getting ready to put it back on. they say they will be working through the night until they get the power restored. live from montgomery county, darcy spencer, news 4. >> during the storm there was a brief radio outage from montgomery county police. it lasted only a minute. the issue was limited to the county and didn't are have any impact on 911 service. >> team coverage continues now. doug is watching the radar. what's in store overnight into tomorrow? >> we have strong storms out there in parts of the region.

most of the area will be dying off as far as the storms are concerned. just a few showers. look now at storm team 4 radar over the last six hours showing strong storms that came through montgomery, fairfax, prince georges county. the district around 5:00, 6:00, 7:00. they moved through quickly. we saw a lot of trees down across parts of the area. we are looking at two storms. one coming right across diehl. you were hit earlier and you will be hit again. lots of lightning and heavy rain. this storm to the south, just south of quantico around fredricksburg which was hit hard. this storm making it toward charles county. we'll continue to watch as the storm moves across the river. you can see it now along 224. around riverside. this will continue east. a lot of lightning with this. no severe thunderstorm warnings. we are not out of the woods yet. there will be a chance for severe storms and more heat in

the forecast. >> thank you. breaking news now. a water main break has prompted a boil water advisory across prince georges county. the 24-inch break is on tanglewood near alternate route one. the advisory spans these 11 communities. you need to boil your community for at least a minute before drinking, cooking, washing dishes or brushing your teeth with it. the advisory is in effect for two days or until crews fix the break. >> more u.s. troops are on the way to iraq to protect americans in baghdad from the terror group isis. this after the release of video today that apparently shows the brutal murder of a second american journalist, steven sotloff. president obama ordered another 350 military personnel to iraq, increasing the total number of u.s. troops on the ground to 820. american airstrikes in iraq also continue. one as recently as monday.

now democratic senator bill nelson says he'll introduce legislation giving the president legal authority to strike isis in syria. meanwhile there's been international outrage over the murder including here in washington. news 4's jackie benson is live on capitol hill with that part of the story. >> reporter: they are the spiritual and community leaders of the tens of thousands of muslims in d.c., maryland, and virginia. the words held powerful outrage. >> are we afraid of the extremists? the reality is they are afraid of our freedom. they are afraid of us. we are not afraid of them. the reason they are be heading journalists is because they are afraid of us uh. >> reporter: one by one local muslim leaders from d.c., maryland and virginia spoke out against the murder of steven sotloff at the hands of isis. >> these actions are not islam. these people are criminals.

walking with her 3-year-old daughter in a crosswalk when they were hit. the little girl is in critical condition. witnesses say speed is to blame. >> i think speed combined with the number of lanes. six through lanes and two turn lanes. to expect pedestrians to be able to get across that with no assistance is ridiculous. >> prince georges county police say it could be some time before they know if the driver will be charged. >> new tonight, plans for a controversial gun range at the foot of sugarloaf mountain are being abandoned. the sugarloaf alliance posted on facebook tonight that the arsenal dropped the application for a special exemptions to build the range. they planned to build two outdoor ranges, an indoor range and a shooting tower. the alliance challenged the plan because of potential impacts on local businesses and wildlife. >> p tomorrow morning, jurors will return for a second day of deliberations in the corruption

trial against virginia's former first couple. today the seven-man and five-woman with jury received 90 pages of instructions before going behind closed doors for five and a half hours. they are considering 14 counts against bob and maureen mcdonnell including conspiracy, and bank fraud. they are accused of taking more than 170 #,000 in gifts and loans in ex change for favors for johnny williams. our northern virginia bureau will be in court as long as it takes the jury to reach a verdict. follow julie and david on twitter for the latest. >> it's been six months since relisha rudd disappeared and the man suspected of kidnapping her killed his wife and himself. now d.c. officials say nothing could have prevented it. a 12-page review found district agencies did everything they were supposed to do leading up to the day the 8-year-old was reported missing.

it also suggested improvements could be made with how the city handles homeless children. the report recommends better coordination and training for social workers, d.c. public schools and staff at the shelter where the suspect workeded. the report says, quote, there were several instances where professionals mandated to report are known or suspected child abuse failed to act. >> the centers for disease control says the ebola outbreak is spreading faster than any effort to stop it. tonight, another american has contracted the deadly virus. the mission group serving in mission says the doctor was treating women in the obstetrics ward of a liberian hospital. it's a separate ward from where ebola patients were treated. this is where dr. brant lly contracted the disease. tonight he spoke about the ordeal with matt lauer. >> i don't think they ever said, kent, i think you are about to

>> a brazen robbery in georgetown. this is footage from the diesel store on m street southwest. four men casually walked in just before 2:30. you see them grab an armful of jeans. they ran out of the store. a pair of diesel jeans costs $200. if you recognize anyone call police. >> joan rivers family has confirmed they are on life support in a new york hospital. her daughter melissa issued a statement saying the family is grateful for the support they received and she knows her mother would be overwhelmed by the outpouring of kindness. she stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest last week during a procedure. she's 81 years old. hornets are stirring up trouble in fairfax county. a homeownerer tells news 4 he can't go into his own backyard because of the swarm around his neighbor's tree. he says the neighbor won't get

a little bit. still shower activity right now. storm team 4 radar picking up showers back to the west around winchester. showers through portions of montgomery county. you can see them around gathersburg which was hit hard today. a few showers toward bethesda. this is the thunderstorm we are watching. more showers through prince georges county. right around shady side along 256 and 2. down towards northern callbert county. the strongest storm is to the south. in charles county. making its way out of stafford county across the potomac. around the king george area. it's moving north and east at 25, 30 miles per hour. it should stay south but around 11:27. heads up if you live along or

close to 301 this will move through your neighborhood in the next 15 to 20 minutes or so. that's another storm. lots of lightning associated. you can see the boundary across the region. that boundary is a frontal boundary crossing the area overnight tonight. with that we will not see this tomorrow. east the in cambridge at 95. leesburg at 93. tomorrow, much different. about 5 degrees cooler. 89 degrees in d.c. 87 toward martinsburg with sunshine. it won't be the heat. it will be the humidity or lack thereof. not nearly as humid tomorrow as it was today. that's good news as you step out. the impact forecast on the low side for sure. warm with less humidity. i'm not anticipating any showers or thunderstorms. most should stay well to the south. even south of fredricksburg around richmond.

we start the another heat wave. we can get there friday and saturday. saturday should be the hottest day with a temperature of 94. watch what happens. this is a cold front that comes through. man, does it change the air mass. down to 80 on sunday. 79 on monday. 78 next tuesday. really nice wet. i think the heat wave breaks saturday into sunday. storms could be strong, potentially severe. that's something we'll be watching for sure through the next couple of days. this is one of the warmest forecasts and the biggest chance for severe weather, too. >> ironic to have the hottest days of the summer. >> football right around the corner. doesn't feel like it. are the redskins ready?
