has a lot of its main bases but president obama and a lot of lawmakers sound leery of taking that step. just moments ago a spokesperson for the family of steven sotloff spoke to the media. he asked for privacy and said he considers his death a personal failure. >> we will not allow our enemies to hold us hostage with the sole weapon they possess, fear. and for me personally i failed you boy scout. i will carry this burden until i meet you but i will never forget your kindness. >> he says that sotloff had a gentle soul. merely wanted to give a voice to those who didn't have one. >> and he did. back here at home police put additional officers on patrol at university of maryland after someone reported a man with a gun on campus. this video was shone to us.

and it shows police with guns drawn looking for is it suspect. officers swept the main administration and other buildings but bottom line they didn't find a threat. tracie willanee wilkins is life campus. >> so many police here so quickly that students were standing around wondering what in the world was going on. they are still wondering because the reports were vague. but police weren't sure what it is they were looking for. the good news is now they have given the all clear. >> i saw cop cars come other and ian over to see what's happening. >> just before 4:00 p.m. a heavy police presence. large guns drawn with the focus on the university's main administration building. >> i saw police stationed with guns and they were pointed towards it. >> university of maryland police

say just before 3:30 they received an anonymous phone call saying someone was being held hostage inside the building but an armed gunmen. alerts went out to students immediately. >> i got alerts on my phone saying suspicious activity and to stay clear. >> for students on the other end of that alert it was some worry. >> nothing i really ever experienced before here. it seemed very quick and very -- i don't know. not a lot of information at all. >> the quick response of course is the good thing here. because they wanted to make sure they were on top of this in case this was a serious situation. they did clear out the administration building as they did the sweep there and other nearby buildings as well. of course they are looking into who made this call that was of course anonymous and turned out not to be true. the investigation into this is continuing. reporting live at the university of maryland, tracee wilkins news4. >> a woman found dead in a

backyard pool in laurel. this is video over the scene on brooklyn bridge road. the woman was renting a room from the homeowner we were told. and it's not clear how she died. at this point police are not calling it suspicious. he's armed, dangerous and wanted in more than half a dozen robberies. over the past couple weeks, investigators have seen the same guy hit shops all across the district. twice at one location. news4 pat collins is live at the most recent crime scene on georgia and northwest. >> reporter: d.c. police out looking for a gunman of arm robberies of seven in the last two weeks. >> it looked like a big gun. >> it was a old school recover, yeah. i was a little freaked out. he pointed it right at me. i said here take it.

>> this is going to be one of the more complex criminal cases that this courthouse has seen in the sense that you have so many witnesses, so many pieces of testimony and you have codefendants. so the jurors are really going to have to work through that and work through the competing testimony. >> james says the fact there are two defendants, each facing 13 charges only adds to the challenge. still for those who've been consumed by this case for months, these are undoubtedly anxious days. >> whether you are the defense or the government you are thrown the last year of your life at this and you are invested in it personally and professionally. i think both are anxiously awaiting a verdict and on pins and needles. >> so at least one more anxious night for both sides. jurors due back at 9:45 in the morning. the judge left them with be safe and be strong. he doesn't want anything

take a look at the metro bus engulfed in flames. and moments later we'll see small explosion that. bus was being towed to a maintenance facility in baltimore when it caught fire. no one was hurt but police had to shut down all northbound  and metro says that bus was one of the newer 2009 models. sounded like a dream but ended in tragedy. a cyclist who started in maryland never crossed had finish line. kevin had pedalled down the east coast, was almost in miami when he was killed. he is from connecticut.
