luck and that is juggled and caught for a touchdown by hakeem nicks and they made it a one-possession game. >> cris: hakeem nicks looked like tony carter had this thing knocked out of his hands and just pops up and floats right back down, softly like a balloon. i mean, you can't cover it better than that. tony carter just didn't make a play on the ball. >> al: so mcafee's on side kick leads to the recovery, leads for the touchdown. vinatieri for the point after and with 3:26 remaining in the fourth, can luck do it again? he was down 24-0 at one point, has squandered a goal to goal opportunity giving up the ball, they settled for three points on another goal to goal opportunity and still here they are down
11:31 pm
only by seven. >> cris: the bigger question is can pat mcafee do it again. this is an on side kick they recovered. this is not a must on side kick situation. remember, offensively, for peyton manning, yes, he is still peyton manning but you're backed up and certainly don't want to turn the ball over and make it a short field. so there's a lot of pressure on the offense in this situation. you're going to kick it out of the back of the end zone, give it to them on the 20 yard line. big decision here by chuck pagano. >> al: i don't think i would here because if you don't recover it, he's got the short field. you're in denver. a field goal makes it a two-possession game. >> cris: there are alternatives. there are spaces on this field where you could do a little pooch kick in behind it, see if the returner can pick it up or not. right here on the edges, there's a lot of space. there's no human being out there. lot of fast guys running down, take a shot at it.
11:32 pm
>> al: and they're going to kick it deep. >> cris: if he lands that one in the field of play, they have a problem. they might have had to play that one inside the five or the ten. >> al: so manning will take over at the 20. 3:26 remaining. indianapolis has two time-outs. they could make it one time out. nope, two. sorry. broncos 41-straight games after leading by 8 or more in the fourth. so at the 20 yard line now -- >> cris: i think you have to play offense here. you have the mvp as your quarterback. they're in a pure run formation. little play action would not surprise me at all right here on first down. >> al: let's get it straight, indianapolis as i said originally one time-out remaining plus the two-minute warning.
11:33 pm
this is montee ball stopped at the line of scrimmage by arthur jones and the colts will take that time-out. so they're out of time-outs now. the lock will only stop at the two-minute warning and peyton will look for a couple of first downs and that would do it. >> cris: i tell you, this arthur jones has had a big game coming other from the the ravens. matching up with redding, another guy that spent time there. watch him outmuscle if offensive line. so now you're looking at second and ten and probably going to get the nickel formations. there's a lot of backup guys. josh mcnairry now in there at linebacker, number 57. who else do we have in there. jerrell freeman went off the field limping a bit ago. he is probably their best cove
11:34 pm
linebacker. >> al: and manning off play action and that is not caught, incomplete. perfect scenario if you're indianapolis. stops the clock, 3:15. sanered the intended receiver. third and ten. >> cris: you don't want to turn the thing over. this is a throw he hits almost every time a little bit on the run. wanted to be a little safe with it and i think it cost him a completion. >> al: colts' defense limiting the denver offense to 60 passing yards in this half. play clock at one as manning takes the snap. manning overthrows andre caldwell. it's the perfect scenario for the colts. use their last time-out and then indy is able to save a bunch of
11:35 pm
time on the two incompletions. fourth down. >> cris: come with the blitz inside. they pick it up beautifully. this should have been a first down. peyton manning had his guy. he was open. just don't hit it. had two opportunities. >> al: colquitt. puts it into the mile high air. whalen. trying to get to the near side and can't. tackled at the 36 yard line by jacob tamme. 2:58. here comes luck down by one touchdown. here it is in the second half alone, 227 passing yards for luck and 70 for manning. >> cris: complete flip-flop first half to second half. well, we've been telling you, this is where andrew luck specializes.
11:36 pm
pep hamilton, their offensive coordinator was saying earlier this week. as long as number 12 is playing quarterback, we are always in football games. he is the master of this situation. >> al: pass is caught. hakeem nicks stopped short by tony carter. >> cris: they've been working on tony carter. that's a matchup. that's an extra guy. last year it was t.y. hilton or bust. now they have hakeem nicks, they have weapons. >> al: flip it out to the near side and the that's fleener for a first down taking the ball into denver territory spotting it at the 43. >> cris: referee signals he did not get out so that clock is
11:37 pm
still moving. oh and brad shaw drops it. started to look up field, drops it, second down with 2:09 left in the fourth. back to the last plays. look at fleener here. did he get out of bounds? well, well -- looks to me as if he did. >> cris: although, really, with all in as this drive any way, you would like to milk the clock as much as you could and not give peyton a shot going the other way. >> al: no question. of little relevance. second down and ten. from the 43. and luck going deep and off the fingertips of reggie wayne. who in his return after missing the last half of last season having surgery has had nine balls for 98 yards. >> cris: couldn't tell if that
11:38 pm
ball was tipped or not but that is some throw by luck up over roby's hands. maybe it was. i think roby got his fingertips on it. >> al: so it's third down and ten and what should be the final play before the two-minute warning. they go five wide here. >> cris: oh, boy. >> al: and the play clock has run out. >> cris: no. >> referee: false start, offense number 78, 5-yard penalty, remains third down. >> cris: von miller jumped but he did not cross the line of scrimmage according to the line judge. you see von miller right here move. chair rhlus reacted. you have to give him that nuch
11:39 pm
roll zone. >> cris: and then he realized it. >> al: so it's third and 15. and luck to the 39 goes t.y. hilton. so he's about six yards short of the first down. we go to the two-minute warning with 1:57 remains in the fourth. it will be fourth down and six when we come back to denver.

>> al: and coming up after the game, it's the volkswagen post report with michele with interviews on the field. we'll look at the matchup next week. but right now it is the ball game. can indianapolis keep it going? >> cris: chris harris, the starting corner back out of the game. tony carter at the top of your screen has been who they have been targeting. hakeem nicks, a big, physical receiver. >> al: fourth and six. can they keep it going? luck throws, no. batted down. incomplete. bradley roby, baptism by fire, knocks it away from reggie wayne. they bring a rookie in, the number one pick out of ohio state and he's had a big night.
11:42 pm
>> cris: sure has. bradley roby, a couple of big plays on reggie wayne and now the game winner. little play, little tug on the arm but you could see andrew luck is going to his guy but the young buc there to make the play. >> al: well, it didn't come easy for the denver broncos. but they will escape with a victory on opening night. after almost squandering a 24-point lead, andrew luck has thrown for 370 yards, roby getting a hug on the sideline and a well-deserved one. >> cris: jack del rio telling me that bradley roby was mislabeled a little bit. there was controversial whether you wanted to take him or not. they think the world of him since they've gotten him.
11:43 pm
really a good cover guy and he has proven worthy of that first pick here tonight. >> al: you think wayne has been in the league since '01. roby has grown up watching wayne dozens of times. now you meet him face to face and it's a night to remember for that guy. >> cris: welcome to the nfl. that is a good feeling when you're a rookie and you end up making a play on a future hall of famer like that to win it. >> al: and peyton needs one more kneel down and the denver broncos will knock off the indianapolis colts. peyton manning has now beaten every team in the league. now that he's taken care of his told team, the indianapolis colts, there it is. only brett favre and manning have beaten everybody. of course brady has never played against new england. brees has never beaten baltimore and terry collins has beaten 31
11:44 pm
of the 32 teams. >> cris: pretty impressive, though, by the indianapolis colts. this looked like it was over at halftime. they came out and fought hard and had a chance to win i want at the end. >> al: so the colts turn it into a ball game but the broncos go to 1-0. go to philly next monday night. denver gets kansas city here as we wrap up the first sunday of the 2014 nfl season. so coming up next, it will be the volkswagon post-game report. john fox heading back to the locker room. peyton manning 269, roby makes the play on fourth down to preserve it.

>> i thought we got off to a good start. i think what happens a lot is opening night, you come out sluggish. that is not what we did. we came out really fast. our problem in the second half, we had a bad first series in the second half and kind of stayed with us throughout the second half. so we have to find a way to correct that and play four quarters. >> you have so many weapons. three touchdown passes to thomas tonight. why is that connection working so well? >> julius has improved from last year. he and i spent a lot of time working this off season and he really wanted to step his game up. he certainly did that tonight. >> one more bullet point on your resume, you join brett favre as the only two quarterbacks to defeat every team in the nfl. what does that mean to you? >> means i'm old. don't tell me stuff like that. you have to be at least 38 years old to do something like that. so, any time you join a classification with brett in the
