dellwit sammon is being held without bond in an alexandria jail. his wrists were bandaged and he was wearing a hospital goun of some sort when he appeared over closed circuit tv during the court hearing. the victim's body was found inside her apartment yesterday morn. people living inside the building on kenmore avenue are stunned. >> it's really scary actually. it just, it's crazy that would happen in the building that we live in. >> something like that, especially in this building. >> cross had worked for the corrections department for almost three decades. director thomas fouft released a statement calling cross his rock. who was a critical person in the agency and a dear friend. right now, some nurses at providence hospital in the district say a staffing shortage could affect your health care. the hospital plans to expand its er beginning next month mcen mc

with nurses at the hospital. >> reporter: providence hospital is finishing up a major expansion of their emergency room. they say they're ready to open soon. the nurse's union are pushing back. they say there aren't enough registered nurses on staff. >> i counted on our nurses. >> reporter: they gathered near the emergency room. >> we cannot safely staff -- >> reporter: providence's hospital is expanding the wing. hospital officials say they're ready to open in the fall. but the nurse's union says not so fast. >> for the smaller er, there's not enough nurses. now they're going to more than double the number of beds in the er and they have not hired nurses to take care of the patients. >> reporter: hospital officials say the er will go from 30 beds to 42 beds. but the nurses say they're short staffed now and if more beds are added, patient care will suffer. they're calling on the hospital

to hire more registered nurses. >> we are overworked. we are stressed. patients are unhappy. we're doing the best we can. it's just simply not enough. >> reporter: providence says they're working on it. that they have 13 new nurses in orientation now and will continue to hire. in a written statement, providence hospital said we have a plan in place to ensure everythg is ready prior to the official opening. and that includes appropriate staffing. the statement goes on to say, we staff beds with nurses and will not open additional beds without appropriate staffing. right now, negotiations are ongoing between the hospital and the nurses union. and no one is calling for a strike. however, the union says that may not always be the case. nothing has been taken off the table. from providence hospital, megan mcgrath, news 4. >> tracking rain on a cool almost fall-like morning. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell joins us with his first

right now, news 4 crew is on the way to learn more about a mother charged with killing her children in chef rverly. news 4 was the first to report spoon had been chargd. she's in jail right now. we're told the children were hurt at their grandparent's house on forest road and died in the hospital. watch news 4 at noon today to learn everything police have to say at a news conference this afternoon. the man convicted in the murder of chandra levy is in court. his lawyers are asking for a new trial. a jury convicted him of killing levy two years ago. since then, lawyers say his former cell mate lied on witness stand. that testimony was a key piece of evidence in the trial. and new today, virginia governor terry mcauliffe plans to expand health care to people who suffer

within the last hour, former presidents bill clinton and george w. bush announced their new partnership. coming together to develop new leaders through a presidential scholars program. they were tea newseum talking about the initiative. talking about motivating ordinary people to get involved. >> i know in washington, everybody assumes we're talking about the next, you know, president or next senator. we're not. we're talking about leadership in all aspects of life.

>> we believe there are some skills and i also think leaders are made. >> this isn't the first time the two presidents have worked together. back in 2010, they visited and raised money for haiti in the aftermath of that devastating earthquake. and congratulations are still flowing in from around the world. the duke and duchess of cambridge are having a second baby. prince william and kate middleton made the announcement via twitter this morning just like they did the first time around. kate is suffering from severe morning sickness right now. the couple's first child, prince george, was born july 22nd, 2013. he is third in the line, behind his grandfather, prince charles, and his father, prince william. the child will be fourth in the line for the throne. betting on the second royal baby has been going on since george was born. patty powers offering 10-1 odds

a lot of students paying close attention because for them it means an extra hour of sleep. the last to arrive walking in late. this was falls church high school at 8:00 a.m., 40 minutes after the first bell. >> i know i would have had a hard time getting to school at 7:15 when i was a kid. >> next year at the same time, you could see a different picture. a crowd of teens better rested and walking into school without being tardy it. the superintendant proposing these changes. high school would begin at 8:10. middle school 15 minutes earlier from 7:45 to 7:30. and elementary schools would change the same. the older kids are obviously on board. >> come to school feeling a little better, not as tired. >> the changes come at a cost. new buses are needed to get students in on time. earlier this year, doctors at children's national medical center told the school board the current schedule is costing kids

some relief at the pump this fall. aaa says we could see gas prices back below $3 a gallon. aaa says people drive less this time of year and it's not as expensive for refineries to make the winter blend. the average price is about $3.58. in virginia, $3.18 a gallon. in west virginia, the average price, $3.51. over the summer, we saw prices dip below $3 a gallon in the fredericksburg area. a potentially dangerous virus has left hundreds of children sick. plus, the doctor being treated for ebola in nebraska could get help from the other two americans now recovering.

all right, parents, here's one to watch out for. there's a mysterious respiratory infection that's affected hundreds of kids. most of the cases have been reported in the midwest. the cdc says it's called entero virus 68, a distant cousin to the polio virus. it starts out with cold-like symptoms. making it difficult to properly diagnose until more serious symptoms show up. as always, the cdc says prevention is the key. the best way to avoid getting sick at all is by washing your

hands of course. now to the ebola crisis in west africa. american military personnel are on the ground, sitting up isolation units and equipment to keep health workers safe. this response comes after dr. rick sack ra became the third american infected with this deadly virus. his doctors say a new research, another new research drug is showing good results. it's too early to say if he's fully out of the woods yet. sacra was infected with ebola while working at a hospital in liberia. >> he's been one of our bes sources. he took care of patients who had ebola and he has ebola himself. as a physician, he's a very astute observer. >> doctors say they're also considering giving him a blood transfusion from one of the other american ebola survivors. sackra was rushed back to the u.s. last week to receive treatment. this week, the national institutes of health will begin

testing another new ebola vaccine on humans. a single dose of the drug vaccinated four monkeys exposed to four levels of ebola. the hope is the drug can rolled out by november to health workers in west africa. officials are looking to see if that vaccine can hold up to the virus over time. adding exercises to your list of hobbies could be the motivation you need to get moving. plus, why students need to ask the question, is the cost of college really worth it.

having a pet with fur around your baby could actually help them prevent asthma. european researchers studied more than 3,000 newborns that were put to bed on animal fur for the first three months of their lives. they found by the age of 6 the kids that were exposed to animal skill skin were 79% less likely to have asthma. researchers say exposing your children to different organisms early in life can help protect them against all sorts of allergies. well, when you thing of hobby, you may think of activities like maybe scrapbooking or photography, but you can easily expand this list to include hobbies that require physical activity that may make your workout a little bit easier to take if you think of it as a hobby. kim weeks from kim weeks yoga

at the live desk, where we just got newly released video of ravens running back ray rice punching out his former fiance. you might find this video disturbing. the nfl says it did not see the new footage before it suspended rice for two games. this was in an elevator at an atlantic city casino where you can see the couple have that spat and then pretty much right now, he knocks her out cold. she is on the ground. in previous video, this is what we've seen. it was from outside the elevator where rice is seen trying to pick up his fiance's unconscious body. the two are now married. the ravens saying they haven't seen this video until today. the nfl meanwhile continues to take heat for what many consider to be too light a punishment. with the release of this graphic video, you can bet new questions for the league are being raised.

barbara. >> thank you, angie. for many, college is the key to securing a good and stable career, but some new college graduates are finding their degrees around paying off as fast as they thought they would. now, new research questions if the price of an education is actually worth the investment. >> my name's marcy, i'll be taking care of you. >> marsy works 30 hours a work as a waitress. not exactly the job she was expecting to have when she graduated with a masters degree in policy research last year. >> i never thought this would happen to me. i have worked hard all my life. i was in the honors program. i graduated sum ma cum laude for goodness sakes. >> the 29-year-old has applied to hundreds of jobs in her field but so far, no luck. she's struggling to pay off her $70,000 student loan debt. >> i definitely found that i am overeducated for a lot of the positions out there. and it's a very frustrating

experience. >> last year, while the average salary for an american with a bachelor's degree was $48,000, 25% of college graduates earned 27,000 or less, just $2,000 more a year than the average high school grad. >> companies are not looking for college degrees to the same extent they were. there's a lot of jobs which don't require a college degree. >> the percentage of recent college grads working in jobs that don't typically require a bachelor's degree has risen in the last decade. some questioning whether too many are overinvesting in their education. the research finds a college degree is still an important investment to help people prepare for high-skilled, high-paying jobs. >> for the vast majority of people, college is worth it. just don't get buried in mountains of dead in doing so. >> like marcy, who worries her education might not pay off. >> it's something that brightened my horizon.
