here 13 years ago. there are a number of tributes and ceremonies planned for today. take a look here. first we are expect to go see a moving tribute here in about 45 minutes at dawn, right around 6:46 or so. a large flag is going to be unfurled from the roof of the pentagon. it will be draped down along the wall there. that is something we have seep. we saw it the first day after the attack. then at 9:30 this morning, there's going to be a remembrance ceremony. it's going to actually happen at the memorial itself here. it is closed to the public. only open to survivors and their famili. at 1:00 this afternoon, a second ceremony is taking place at the courtyard at the pentagon for pentagon employees. it is close this morning by will reopen at 11:00 to people can come and pay their respects sometime after 11:00. we'll be keeping an eye on things at the pentagon.

minutes. not too abouted there. >> thanks, medical sis sa. a live look at lower manhattan this morning as we remember the 9/11 terror attacks. . few hours the annual ceremony erica hill has a look at the day's events. erica, good mog to you. >> reporter: good morning to you, eun. once again or the names of the nearly 3,000 victims will be read by family members. this has become less of a large media event over the last few years. part of that is by design. the city of new york will not organize the event. it is done by the september 11th museum and memorial. you will see and hear the names being read. that just after this moment of silence. it commemorates the moment when the nort.

in d.c., the pentagon, the president will be there later this morning. he will lay a wreath, make brief remarks. and commemorations of course in shanksville, pennsylvania where flight 93 went down, remembering and honor the crew members and passengers on board that flight. the congressional gold medal will be on dis there, which is a little bit different. and the memorial will be open to in new york city for the first time they will be able to visit the national memorial on the anniversary on this day. that will open up to the public at 6:00 p.m. until midnight. it will be just open for family members and first responders. the museum opened in may. nearly 1 million people have visited the museum. and since the opening of the memorial, 15 million people have visited.

9/1 1 attacks. >> reporter: a number of ceremonies. one looks like it's about to get under way. up there if you look closely on the roof of the pentagon you can see a number of people standing there. we are awaiting the unfurling of the flag. this is something that happens on september 12th, the day after the attack that was the first time that it happened. and being here that day, it was something that was rather unexpected. all of a sudden withy fanfare, firefighters went up on the roof and unfurled this enormous flag. it hung there on the side of the pentagon next to the damage. so that's become a symbol of american determination. we were told 6:46 that's when they expect to unfurl the flag. we are seeing that movement up on the roof. it will certainly be quite a sight for folks to see as they drive on the highway and pass

most followed story we have polled on. it wasn't about convincing the country that he has to take on this threat. the question is did he convince the country this is a threat that can be h frankly a limited amount of military action. the president compared it to w qaeda, yemen, pakistan, afghanistan, and somalia. and of course if that's the case, then that's something that never goes away. he didn't talk about what happens to syria after the u.s. military is successful in getting rid of isis. he certainly made his case why he has to go after this group. the is, is this the strategy that's going to work for the long term. >> that's the question. he talked about coalitions, having other countries involved. can you talk about that and whether het s from congress. >> i think congress is fairly there. there seems to be, if anything,

some in congress would like to see is a larger u.s. military presence if anything. overall, i think you will see supporr most of this program. i think the question will be how, instead of the saudis, for instance, helping to pay for the operation, are they going to be the boots on the ground? the president mentioned there will have to be combat troops in syria. he said there will not be combat troops. are the saudis really goi to kick in? how about the turks, the jordanians. that's what the next 10 to 14 days are about. the president will go to the united nations trying to build this coalition. that's why he won't see any military action in syria until that coalition is built. >> chuck todd, "meet the press" moderator. thanks for joining us. you can see his speech coming up
