four weeks with early voting. bowser is leading and voters worry about education and jobs. for muriel bowser who won the drink primary, her lead over catania is good news for her while challenger carol schwartz is even farther back. 14% of voters are undecided. the "washington post" merit poll suggests the race is still uncertain despite bowser's lead because one-third say they're undecided or might change their mind. for catania, last spring he trailed bowser by 33% and cut that deficit in half but he still trails significantly with about six weeks until the november 4th election day. veteran campaigner carol schwartz making a fifth run for mayor appears to be drawing votes from both candidates lessening the impression her campaign was undercut iting.

two-thirds think the city is on the right track. education and the economy are issues on voters mind followed by housing, ethics and crime. voters see bowser as the candidate with the best personality and temperament to handle the mayor's office, even slightly more on education, which is catania's main focus in this race. the nbc4 "washington post" maris poll is out one day before the scheduled university forum that will bring the three candidates together for the first time in this fall campaign. bowser is benefitting being the democratic candidate in this democratic city. >> interesting graphic there. education high among voter interest. crime at the bottom. that brings up kathy lanier and henderson, the police chief and director of education. what about that? >> our poll asked about what people thought about kathy

lanier. she's been the police chief since 2007 when she was appointed by adrian fenty. 71% think she's doing a good job. 14% disapprove. 15% are unsure. these are good numbers. it used to be in the low 80s. she's been there a long while. in any indication from any other candidates whether or not they would keep both of them if they were elected? >> yes. people love kathy lanier when it comes to their candidates. david catania has not said he would but sources say he would and carol schwartz and bowser said they would. we have kaya henderson who took over for michelle reed in 2010 and much less confrontational. her approval rate, 52% doing a good job. 22% saying, no, 26% unsure. the fact is she has a very tough job and these are good numbers

they disappeared in 1975. since then, police have relentlessly followed every lead in the search for the lyon sisters. now montgomery county detectives say they might find the break they're looking for atop a mountain in rural thaxton, virginia. people in that area think they know what police are looking for. >> monday, they said they were looking for the two missing girls out of maryland. >> reporter: jerry has lived in in thaxton for nearly 60 years and he's surprised they're searching his neighborhood for evidence of the disappearance of the lyons sisters.

>> it's hard to believe. i've never heard of nothing like that around here befo montgomery county police and the bedford county sheriff's office tells us leads in the investigation brought them to taylor mountain. police have been out here since last week. they look at the scene from the air and on the ground. right now, i'm actually standing on the property previously owned by the welch family. on the other side of those trees right over there, police tell me there's a cemetery 100 years old and a lot of folks are wondering if the lyons sisters are buried there. the land they're searching was once owned by michael welch, a person of interest in this case. sheila lyon, 12 at the time and her sister, kathryn, 10, vanished in 1975, while walking home from weeden plaza. welch is a convicted sex offender locked up in a delaware prison since 1997. and police are looking to see if

welch's family members are involved in the disappearance. >> i hope you find them and set everything at peace with the families and everything. >> reporter: on taylor mountain, in thaxton, virginia, i'm shamarry stone, news4. >> a dangerous situation in the western part of the country. a dozen wildfires raging in california threatening hundreds of homes there. one of the fires in a place 60 miles east of sacramento has already burned nearly 29 square miles, more than 2500 firefighters are working to put that fire out. at this point, they say it's only 5% contained. meantime, the town of weed in california is cleaning up after a fire destroyed more than 150 structures there. it forced the town's largest employer to close indefinitely. in arizona, not fire but water that is the problem. an historic rainfall earlier this month and people are

we have breaking news now of a water main break having a significant impact on traving in gaithersburg. >> it is happening at a fire station at montgomery village and russell avenue. this is near 270. here is a live look at the scene and chopper 4. traffic is moving slowly. just around the corner from lake forest mall. we have no word what caused the break or don't know how long it will take crews to fix it. we have no idea of the impact on the community. it happened a short time ago again near lake forest mall and near the costco. you're probably familiar with that area if you know where lake forest is. no word what caused the break or how extensive it is. we do know crews are on the way

chief to decide. >> i'm not judge and jury. there is an appeal process. but for the initial review i'm very comfortable with that. >> reporter: they would have to pass a background class and attend a training class. simply living in a high crime area would not qualify for it. there are other restrictions where you can carry your gun. government buildings, no, schools, no, public transportation, no. at a public demonstration, no. anywhere alcohol is sold? no. anywhere within 1,000 feet of a public official's motorcade. as for non-d.c. residents. >> people out-of-state would qualify if it's registered and if they have ability to carry in their home states. >> reporter: while the new law will allow for concealed carry, it will not allow for open carry for guns in d.c.

responsible for their disappearance. catherine hoggle has been charged with child neglect and parental abduction. she's being held at this montgomery county jail where she's undergoing a mental competency evaluation. she has 1 twas on the run and be the last several days. she suffers from schizophrenia and off her meds for weeks. can they force catherine hog toll take her meds. experts say that's not likely without a judge's order and no such order has been issued yet. when catherine hoggle ran away, she spent a lot of time in germantown. troy turner says she did that because he thinks she wanted to be close to the children. >> she kept coming back to this area. it's hard for me to believe they're not somewhere close by. >> reporter: catherine hoggle being held in jail on two separate $1 million money bonds.

live in montgomery county, pat collins, news4. >> thanks, pat. police say a man who violently attacked a woman at a prince william county mall in virginia last spring has been locked up. northern verirginia chief found hit in the database led to the arrest. >> when the police heard from the database there was a match, they recognized the name that was provided. the suspect was already a registered sex offender. detectives tracked down 33-year-old victor serrano yesterday and arrested him. he is accused of attacking a potomac mills mall employee last march as she was getting in her vehicle to head home. he grabbed her, began choking her and tried to force her into the back seat of her vehicle. the victim fought back and escaped and called police. at the scene, investigators found shoelaces the suspect used to choke the victim and that's where they got the crucial dna

sample. >> luckily, there was dna evidence on that item and that dna evidence was then compared to other dna samples that are already in the database and luckily, we were able to get a match and identify the suspect. victor serrano is now charged with abduction with intent to defile and strangulation and being held at the adult detention center. there is more fallout for the nfl's players contract. nike has suspended its contract with adrian persons charged with child abuse. and he will be barred from team activities until legal issues are resolved. nike is joining a growing list of nfl sponsors including anheuser-busch and mcdonald's all expressing concerns about the league's handling of domestic violence. at this point, no one has threatened to cut any ties. >> the average nfl sponsor gets

grief vans with the school system and they will cite a pattern of harassment from the school administration that date back at least a year. mcgraph is still teaching at louden high in percyville but he was replaced as the football coach before the start of the school year. he tried to implement injury sen sensors in the helmets before the school removed him. officials have not commented why mcgraph was replaced. transportation is tough here and could get worse. the transportation officials forecast our population will grow 25% by the year 2040. road capacity is expected to expand only 7% by that time. what that means of course is something close touchet os. 6.5 million people living and trying to get from one place to another in the area.

priceless pieces of american art history lost. tonight, i-team takes a look at a program you might have read about in school. launched in the district to put artists to work and keep them from starving during the depression the economy ended up being saved but as the i-team, scott mcfarland discovered, much of the art was not. >> reporter: d.c. is home to the largest most iconic visited art displays in the country. >> it's a legacy in the country. >> reporter: for the art treasures, art the government paid for and lost.

a needle in a haystack? >> pretty much. >> reporter: to understand why they're missing, we have to go back in time. washington d.c. 1935, the "great depression." the economy in shambles, artists with no customers. so the government launched a works project administration arts project, the new deal program, hiring artists, paying them up to $42 a week to paint pictures for government buildings. >> the arts were one of the jobs that were available. >> reporter: more than 100,000 pieces of art created. >> the paintings and the sculptures and the fine art prints cover all walks of life. >> reporter: but the record keeping was sloppy, done by hand. >> i'm not sure things were that cataloged or organized those days and people didn't put the value on them people do today. >> reporter: the active general in charge of services administration is in charge of this search and so far 20,000

pieces of art have been found. >> this was a big deal. >> reporter: it is found in surprising places and only after years of searching. that's lake view terrace discovered hanging in the home of a civil servant in ohio. she brought it home from work when the building she worked in was closed. the feds retained this artist to restore the painting and lock it up until the feds find a museum to hang it. this one shows the turmoil amid the depression recently apprised to be worth three-quarters of a million dollars. found nearly a half century when it went missing from a u.s. senator's office when a relative of one of his staffers tried to sell it. >> reporter: this agent gets tips online. >> when you go on ebay and search artwork you get a lot of

tips. >> reporter: even though selling the artwork is a crime. this is a copy of december in venice. the original is missing ripped off by a tourist visiting the museum in september 2008. some paintings are so valuable they trigger court battles. they found this hanging in an art gallery. the agents pounced but said the gallery refused to hand it over. the feds had to win it back in court years later. >> this is the history of america. in that respect it's very important and it is the property of the united states. >> reporter: some of the paintings we do know about was recently displayed here at the smi smithsonian art museum showing workers filling out welfare forms during the depression. even a lead versiinvestigator s now so many pieces of this art will never be found. scott mcfarland, news for
