culver, news 4. >> hannah graham is from fairfax county and graduated from west potomac high school last year. students painted the rock outside the school with messages of love and lit candles around it. last night there was also a moment of silence at the football game. students, parents and faculty are all concerned. >> as a devoted member of the music department, she was very loved and we're all concerned. it's very important she come back as soon as possible. >> the community is praying for graham's safe return. as the mystery of that disappearance grows, the friends and family of two missing montgomery toddlers will search for them this morning. >> you can join them at 8:30 at seneca valley in germantown. 2-year-old jacob and 3-year-old sarah huggle have been missing for weeks. there's a $20,000 reward for information in what leads to their safe return. we talked to the children's

they plan to address it after sunday's game. >> goodell was trending on twitter in our area as many of you reacted to the nfl commissioner's big apology. >> i got it wrong in the handling of the ray rice matter. and i'm sorry for that. but now i will get it right and do whatever is necessary to accomplish that. >> goodell says he plans to start domestic violence education sessions for all teams and players. he also announced partnerships with the national violence resource center and the national domestic violence hotline who say it does make a big difference. >> we weren't even expecting it to get this large and at this point we're transforming centers into call centers because it's a dream for us. >> not everyone has accepted the apology. national organization of women says he has made too many promises and even some current nfl players took to twitter to criticize goodell.

new this morning, the terrorist group isis released 49 turkish hostages. looking at new individuvideo of buses arrivin turkey. they were captured from the in june. turkey openedity border with syria, allowing more people to escape from those islamic militants. 800,000 syrian refugees are in the country of turkey. france joining the u.s. military strikes against isis in iraq. they released this video showing their fighter jets targeting isis targets outside of mosul. this is their first arial mission. dozens of extremists were killed in those air strikes overnight. pennsylvania residents stay inside their homes as police shut down roads on the pocono mountains as they search for

eric frein. nbc news says reports of shots fired were not connected to the heavy police presence. frein is one of the fbi's top ten most wanted. police say he is armed and extremely dangerous and has been on the run since last week. thousands of americans are stranded in mexico, surrounded by the devastation from hurricane odile. the hurricane swept through five days ago. nbc's mark potter tells us about the big rescue operation happening now to bring those americans home. >> this is what it looked like at the height of the storm. >> oh, my god! >> a luxury hotel lobby destroyed by ferocious 125-mile-an-hour wind and rain from hurricane odile. >> boom, completely gone. >> in this video taken by weather channel storm chaser, the wind pushes through doors and windows.

afterwards, chaos, looting. the roads impassable and littered with debris. while the airport is in shambles, thousands of americans were stranded, desperate, waiting for hours, some for days, in sweltering temperatures just to get on any plane bound for the u.s. >> we're going home. >> this morning, the u.s. military evacuated dozens of americans to los angeles and san diego. and commercial planes have been called in, too, helping people like chicago firefighter and iraq veteran jim long finally get home. >> no one was coming to help us. we needed to help ourselves. >> jim and his fellow firefighters in cabo for a friend's wedding gathered their loved ones in a hotel hallway for safety. they slept in shifts to protect against looters and the escalating violence. others have similar stories. >> we had to sort of evacuate and take shelter and we didn't know what was going on outside, so that was definitely -- the 24 hours after were really scary.

afternoon. today's high here in washington right around 81 degrees. college football forecast. navy on the road in new jersey taking on rutgers today. 3:30 kickoff. still plenty of time to drive up there to piscataway. temperatures in the 70s much of the game. just have to tell me who, when and where @chuckbell4 on twitter. d.c. police confirmed to us a woman died from a stabbing overnight on benning road in southeast, not far from woodlawn cemetery. police say someone stabbed that woman around 1:30 this morning. we know the investigation is focused around a house that you saw here in the video. detectives are questioning i that area, trying to determine exactly what happened here. officers say they are looking for a man in connection to the case. new details this morning about a deadly stabbing in a

annarundel county. the men didn't know each other. bear and two other men showed up to usherie's house. after a fight, he came out with a knife and bear stabbed him. usherie died. two other people there at the time were not involved in the incident. family and friends will hold a candlelight vigil for a man hit and -- or killed in a hit and run crash. 26-year-old highley was killed crossing a street not far from the university. the vigil will happen at 7:30 on georgia avenue near fairmont street. police are still looking for the driver. the school is offering antibiotics to any student who came in contact with a sophomore to died of bacterial meningitis. andrea jaime died of the highly contagious disease. close friends have already received antibiotics. the school wants to make sure that anyone who had contact with

her is protected as well. it's transmitted through sneezing, coughing, kissing and sharing utensils. a tough time battling a massive wildfire in california. residents left their homes east of sacramento. the fire destroyi ining homes a others are threatened right now. >> it's horrifying and sickening. it's just awful. i don't know what else to say. >> the man accused of starting that fire pled not guilty to an arson charge. >> a florida family is back together after the father drove his car into a pond. nbc's justin finch tells us how he was saved. >> pulled from the pond, silver van that could have been the driver's final resting place. here is how it got there thursday night. watch. in less than ten seconds, the honda minivan goes from land into that lake. >> before i know it, i'm watching a van go straight in

the water. >> keith bartley saw the dangerous dive in person and what happened next. >> by the time i looked to the left, officer was coming. >> that was florida city officer mike castilla moving quickly to arrest the man behind the wheel. >> i see an old man screaming for help and i see the window start fogging. >> reporter: officer castilla radioed for help and officer rodriguez answered. >> i jumped inside the water and assisted breaking the window of the submerged van. >> reporter: witnesses say the officers pulled that driver out just in time. the driver was barely conscious when he was safely brought to the pond's edge and checked out by paramedics. his life likely saved by officer's castilla and rodriguez. >> it was a great feeling in my whole career, to save somebody's life. >> reporter: justin finch, nbc 6, south florida. >> talk about being in the right

one maryland man sharing his tough journey to compete in the ironman competition. >> brian boyle and his amazing resilien resilience. >> i was in a medically induced coma for eight months, brought back to life over eight times from what my doctors tell me. >> brian boyle doesn't remember the details of the day, but does remember it changed his life forever. >> i was going home, crossing a local intersection i had been on hundreds of times in my lifetime and when i crossed the intersection, a speeding dump truck collided in my driver's side door and thenjuries were catastrophic. >> reporter: broken bones, heart failure. he spent two months in the intensive care unit. brian was on the verge of giving up. that's when his parents stepped in. >> he wasn't awake. i guess he could hear us. we didn't know it at the time. that's when garth got mad. >> he wasn't responding, you know. call it a pep talk. it's not a pep talk.

it was, brian, i need you to fight. >> reporter: the talk worked. >> i keep positive and i keep believing in a very negative situation, maybe one day i could get better. >> reporter: after months of rehab, brian finally became whole. this weekend, in front of friends and family, he will compete in the inaugural maryland ironman competition. >> of course it's worth it. for me, it's living life. it's what i love about that challenge and so forth. it's a long day, but for the ironman, everyone goes through the same kind of suffering. at the end of the race, the finish line, it make it is all worthwhile. i'm hoping my story can make a positive impact and help them realize that people can accomplish a lot if they put their minds to it and people can be surprised by the level of energy and just focus that they really have. the human spirit is an amazing thin thing. >> and that was jason pugh reporting. the competition is in cambridge, featuring a 2.4 me swim, 26.2
