>> reporter: good morning, eun. part 2 of this facelift. the grass is in tough shape. take a look behind me. we can see a little bit better with the sun up. look at the huge bald spot. they have already done some of this work. phase 2 is getting under way the. you can see the areas that are going to be impacted. they already finish up third through 7th street. beautiful green grass there at this point. now they are moving down the mall. the area that will be close for the next 18 months is 7th through 12th street. we have seen some of the work get under way. if you take a look live, some of the fencing, they put up a post already. we are expecting more of that activity as they continue to the get things or for this project. they will be ripping up the grass in this stretch of the

national mall. they will use special soil which drains better and won't pack down the way we have seen on the national mall. experts say this is so packed down that the dirt that's here now is almost like concrete. so they will remedy that and then plant some they will not be able to access this stretch from 7th to 12th street. the the grass will be closed. also, the walkway that you see here will be closed as well. so you're not going to be able to cut through the mall as you're you've to. jefferson and madison streets. those sidewalks will be open during the project. the carousel, that will be open as well. for folks who are sight-seeing, looking for the beautiful pictures, it's not going to be as pretty, at least for not for a little ove. once they finish the project it should be greatly improved. megan mcgrath, news 4. back to you. >> megan, thank you. 6:46 is your time right now. developing this morning, in a couple of hours the search for
