news 4 at 4:00 starts now. those stories in just a bit. first at 4:00 today, a travel nightmare unfolding at this hour on this friday afternoon for travelers here and across the country. good afternoon, everybody. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. we begin with a live look at reagan national airport. it is one of several airports across the country dealing with cancellations and delays today. caused by fire at an air traffic control facility near chicago's o'hare airport. >> now we just checked. 11 flights have been cancelled today out of reagan national because of this incident. bwi marshal had nine cancellations. fortunately, dulles, just one. but dozens of flights all over our region were delayed. >> illinois authorities believe that fire was set deliberately by an airport contractor. all flights into and out of busy o'hare and midway airports shut down for hours. >> planes are starting to take

off again. wendy has more on the chaos it's caused all over the country. >> lines are terribly long. it's crazy. >> reporter: air travelers' nightmare as more than 1,000 flights in and out of chicago's o'hare airport areded o busy friday morning. >> i'm afraid it's going to be an all-day. we don't really know what's going on. >> reporter: a fire it at the faa center that controls radar for flights at midway and o'hare airports brought air traffic to a halt. according to investigators, the fire was intentionally set, but they stress, it was not an act of terrorism. >> this is a local issue with a contract employee and nothing else. >> reporter: but it is a national issue, as travelers across the country wait. >> i'm really tired. i want to go home. i want to sleep. i want to get to my destination. and i want to lay my baby down. >> i wish you could see this line. >> reporter: understandable frustration as passengers

navigate long lines and huge crowds to get to their final destination. no word yet on when normal schedules will resume. so all passengers need to pack their patience. in chicago, wendy woffock, nbc news. >> visit nbcwashington.com. coming up at 5:00 tonight, our transportation reporter, adam tuss, talks to local travelers who were forced to change their plans today. right now, things are back to normal at the national zoo, and should be okay this weekend. a gas leak in an administrative building forced the zoo to shut down around 10:30 this morning. it reopened at noon after the leak was fixed. no one was injured and no animals were affected by the leak. breaking news. developments in the search for a missing uva student from fairfax county. right now the man accused of abducting hannah graham is headed back to virginia. just a short time ago, deputies escorted jesse matthew out of the galveston county, texas

jail. he's expected to be on a flight back to virginia's capital tonight. northern virginia bureau reporter david culver is following the latest now out of charlottesville. david? >> reporter: jim, that breaking news starting there in texas, but we'll bring the full focus of this story back here to charlottesville by tonight. he's expected to arrive in an airport, expected to be in either richmond or here in charlottesville. it's more likely in richmond. let me show this video of jesse matthew, leaving the galveston county jail, just before 2:00 our time. that was on his way to the airport down there in texas. now police here tell me that matthew will be arriving on a commercial flight. again, to richmond, more likely than charlottesville. while on that plane, he's going to be wearing regular clothes. he'll be handcuffed and his feet will be shackled. we heard from the chief today. he sent three of his officers to bring matthew back. >> they're willing to get him

back here to escort him back to the commonwealth so he can be processed on that warrant here and be brought before a magistrate. >> reporter: now once he arrives, he's going to be brought to jail, where it's possible he's not going to have a bond hearing until thursday. the reason for that is because of a judicial conference that has courts here closed monday through wednesday. meantime, while he's coming back, the search for hannah graham, it continues at this hour. search crews going all around al bemarshall county here in charlottesvilar awell. we're goi to tell you the new tactics today and hear from search team leaders when we join you at 5:00. for now, i'm david culver, news4. we are learning more about a deadly pedestrian accident in a metro parking lot in fairfax county. lorraina was hit and killed by a fairfax connecter bus. she was walking in the roadway at the lot where passengers are often dropped off at the huntington metro station. so far, no charges have been

filed against the bus driver. a washington redskins football player is thanking everyone for their support today after an accident off the field. linebacker keenan robinson tweeted overnight that he and his family were hit by a drunk driver after leaving fedexfield. this happened in the area around arena drive in the beltway. police tell us the other driver had been at the game before the accident, and drunk driving can be a problem with all tailgaters. >> if you're going to go to the game, enjoy the game, have a great time. but if you're going to drink, designate a driver and make sure that driver gets you home safely. >> that man involved in the crash was cited with dui and released to a sober driver. mark segraves talked to him today and we'll have his response at 5:00. rumors of a fight club at a virginia high school prompt big changes today in class. plus, what's now being band inside fairfax county parks. and high temperatures so far

you're watching news4 at 4:00. shoppers helped catch a man suspended of sexually assaulting a woman at hechinger mall at 7:15 last night. people in nearby businesses say they heard screaming coming from a stairwell inside the mall. shoppers rushed out and saw a man grabbing the woman's pants. one person pulled him off of her and held him down until police got there and arrested him. police hope this video helps them catch whoever burglarized a school in d.c. this is surveillance footage from saturday morning here at options public charter school.

that's on th street in northeast d.c. this camera catches two teenagers walking the halls, carrying out unknown items. as you see, the teens were wearing masks. the boys are considered persons of it interest. police are not saying what was taken from the school. fears of a fight club at a northern virginia school may be behind a sudden drop in attendance. about 400 fewer students showed up for classes at fauquier high in warrenton today. students posted on twitter claiming today to be fight day. they later said it was a joke. school leaders say the students just wanted attention, but had extra security at the school any today, just to be safe. there have been four fights at the school over the past week. well, expect some new signs at fairfax county parks starting tomorrow. no smoking signs will join the other don't signs at parks throughout fairfax county. officials will kick off the new policy and hang the first signs in annandale tomorrow morning.

from odenton, maryland. xavier from oxon hill. both have critical illnesses. the treatment they're getting the next week will be at disney world. >> i've never been there before. >> reporter: for xavier, it's all about a respite from the regimen of medicine and doctors visits and life changes that come with sickle cell anemia. he's had it all his life. >> there was only one year i wasn't in the hospital and that was 2011. >> reporter: xavier's father's health is fading too, and it's meant even more adjustments for this family. >> not only do i see xavier, i see his father. so a vacation for our family is pretty big. >> reporter: likewise, for jackson's family. >> we have needed this trip for a while. jackson has been in and out of the hospital. >> reporter: these young people are among 36 young people and their families from around the world being treated to six days at disney world by the something magic foundation.

tonight is it's not going to get super chilly. 6:00 to 8:00, temperatures in the low 70s. 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., it it will be cool, but temperatures still in the upper 60s. so a light jacket i think will be fine tonight. a sweatshirt will be okay. but you don't need to bundle up. gloves not necessary at all. tomorrow morning, maybe you're heading to the farmers market in your neighborhood. 9:00 a.m., it's going to be a cool start with a temperature around 63 degrees. but with plenty of sunshine. our saturday is beautiful. we warm up quickly. by 11:00 a.m., already in the low 70s. noon still plenty of sunshine. the it temperature of 73 degrees. high temperature in your neighborhood tomorrow around that 80 degree mark. so just a touch warmer than today. 80 in leesburg. 78 in frederick. 75 by the water in annapolis. washington high tomorrow of 81 degrees. the nationals forecast, of course they're playing tonight if you're heading down to nats park. bring a jacket. it will turn cool once the sun goes down.

sunset now before 7:00 p.m. tomorrow as they take on the marlins once again at 4:05, weather looking spectacular. sunday as well. you don't have plans this weekend, grab some baseball tickets for the rest of the regular season before the playoffs begin! sunday, a high temperature of 83 degrees. now sunday, there is going to be a little bit more cloud cover around. we'll start off with plenty of sunshine. and finish off the day with mostly to partly sunny skies. still, though, the weather looking superb. monday might be dealing with rain, especially around the midday and afternoon hours. right now, about a 30% chance of that. a high temperature on monday of 77. tuesday, a cloud/sun mix. a high once again of 77. now here's the thing about next week. wednesday, thursday and friday we're keeping it dry, but right now plenty of clouds around. high temperatures in the mid 70s. the weather setup is interesting. we have this 8 here. this is high pressure. what you need to know about that, how the winds are going to travel around it, over the ocean and then into washington.

>> i'm jim handly. first at 4:30, doctors are working to save a man hit by a car in montgomery county. traffic was slowed for hours here in gaithersburg near woodfield road. the man was hit around 9:00 this morning at mountain laurel lane and flower hill way. the intersection is now back only. chopper 4 flew over the area as cars were rerouted. the driver stayed on the scene. no charges filed. the man has critical injuries. his identity has not yet been released. we are following breaking developments right now on the search for the missing uva student from fairfax county. a short time ago, deputies escorted jesse matthew out of the galveston county, texas, jail. he's charged with abduction in the disappearance of hannah graham. matthew is the last known person to be with her when she went missing earlier this month. meanwhile, the search for hannah continues throughout the charlottesville area. >> the teams are out today at several different places following up on tips.

>> northern virginia bureau reporter david culver is in charlottesville and will tell us about the new appach police are taking in the search coming up at the top of the hour. first at 4:00, one of the nigerian school girls abducted by islamist terrorists has either escaped or been released. there are a lot of questions this evening about how the student came to be freed six months after roughly 200 students were kidnapped. nigerian police say the 20-year-old woman was discovered in a village wednesday after being dropped off by suspended militants from boko haram. a parent of two girls who are still hostages says the young woman spent four days in the bush. she is receiving medical treatment right now. now to the fight against isis. the u.s. coalition is getting more help. the british parliament decided to join the air strikes in iraq. here in washington, some members of congress say u.s. lawmakers should also be on the job.

nbc's jennifer johnson has more. >> reporter: for a second day, u.s. war planes bombed oil installations in eastern syria. those controlled by isis militants and used to fund their war of terror. second chuck hagel says the u.s. will not let up. >> this will not be an easy or brief effort. we are at the beginning, not the end. >> reporter: again, military officials won't commit to u.s. combat troops on the ground, but will provide support for other country soldiers. >> there is no air power alone solution to soil either in iraq or syria. so the answer is yes, there has to be a ground component to the campaign against isil and syria. and we believe that the path to develop that is the syrian moderate opposition. >> reporter: as the u.s.-led coalition grows, denmark and belgium are the latest to sign on. british politicians finally decided to commit their own war planes for strikes in iraq. >> this is about psychopathic terrorists that are trying to

cars and suvs because of a problem that could stop the air bags from working in a crash. the recalled models include the 2013 and 2014 model years of the ford cmax compact, the fusion mid size, the escape suv and the lincoln mkz. ford says a control module could short-circuit and disable several vital safety features, including the air bags, seat belts, curtain air bags. contact a dealer to get that faulty module replaced, free of charge. computer bugs. security experts say a bug named shell shock could be used to take control of hundreds of millions of machines all over the world. this bug is built into 70% of the machines that connect to internet, including computers, routers and some smartphones. the shell shock bug was undiscovered for more than two decades. some computer and software makers have released patches to

protect computers and phones now. there is a second update out this afternoon to the apple ios 8 operating system. it's supposed to fix the bug caused by the first update. apple pulled the product about an hour after its release wednesday amid widespread reports of users being left without cell service or the touch i.d. fingerprint sensor stopped working. the first update was supposed to fix those issues. well, lots of people talk to their tvs. now it will have some effect. panasonic is introducing the vieira tv, which is voice activated. users can turn it on, change the volume and record programs without using a remote control. the new tv hits the shelves october 17th. until then, you'll still have to keep looking for the lost remote. >> move over, hooters. there's a popular new restaurant moving in. according to bloomberg, twin peaks is the fastest-growing

restaurant chain in the country with $165 million in sales. it's a casual dining and sports bar that seems to be known best for its waitresses than its menu. twin peaks has 57 locations around the country. but there are plans to open more of them soon. the trend on what consumers spend money on is changing. >> sure is. consumer reporter erika gonzales is here to explain. fascinating, erika. >> since the economic down turn, we became a nation of save verifies, to traumatized to buy anything but the bare necessities. according to a survey, people are now opening up their wallets. americans are starting to spend again. >> i have plans to purchase a home. >> i bought a new car in november. >> the bill, $800. >> i bought a house. i've bought property. >> we're redoing our patio. >> a consumer reports nationally representative survey found that's happening across the country.

12% said they had bought a home in the last year or plan to do so in the year ahead. 46% just bought a car. or are about to buy one. and spending on home improvements is up. >> a third of americans told us they recently completed a major renovation or are about to do so. >> we are going to redo our entire apartment. >> definitely doing renovations. you know, in the kitchen, bathroom. >> reporter: 29% said they plan to buy a major home electronic device like a tv or computer. and 39% plan on small electronics like tablets or cell phones. younger people, those under 34, are especially optimistic. 25% said they now feel they can afford to get married. >> i've been saving for almost now two years before i get married. so it's been a little bit hard. it wasn't easy. >> reporter: 24% said they can now afford to have children. >> i think right now it's a great time to try to start a family if you have not yet.

you're watching news4 at 4:00. a resentencing hearing is under way at this hour in the controversial rape case out in montana. former high school teacher stacy dean rambolt had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student. he was initially sentenced to just 30 days in jail. the judge placed some responsibility on the teen victim, saying she had as much control of the situation as rambold. prosecutors won their appeal of the case. the victim did not live to see her abuser punished. she committed suicide while the case was pending. it's week four of the nfl season, but the league remains under fire for the way it's handled domestic violence cases. and now there is a new dispute over the ray rice elevator video that brought the issue to light. >> the answer to that is no. >> reporter: embattled nfl commissioner, roger goodell, has

repeatedly insisted no one inside nfl offices saw the now infamous ray rice video. but a law enforcement official told the associated press he sent the video to the nfl headquarters in april and now he tells the a.p. he sent it specifically to the attention of the nfl's chief security officer, jeffrey miller. the a.p. reports the official who spoke anonymously because he's not authorized to release details, acknowledges he did not know if miller ever saw the dvd or even opened the package. overnight, miller responded with this statement to nbc news sent by an nfl spokesman. i ungively deny that i received at any time a copy of the video. and i had not watched it until it was made public on september 8th. last week, goodell said the nfl repeatedly asked law enforcement officials for the video.

>> we asked for it on several occasions. we asked for it on several occasions over the spring, all the way through june. from february through june. >> reporter: according to the a.p., the official said no one from the nfl ever asked for the elevator video. the official said he sent it anonymously to miller with a note that read in part, ray rice elevator video. you have to see it. it's terrible. earlier this month, the same law enforcement official told the a.p. he did get a reply from the nfl in april, a 12-second voice mail from the league offices, confirming they received the package, saying, quote, you're right. it's terrible. meanwhile, ray rice's appeal of his indefinite suspension is on hold right now. the nfl and the player union have now agreed to postpone the appeal until both sides can agree on an arbitrator. all right. the weekend is upon us. amelia, how are we looking so far? >> today beautiful. the weekend, it's not going to

devastating fire. and why a huge portion of our national mall is now off limits. 12 hours after a fire at an faa facility, thousands of passengers are still stranded without flights. scott macfarlane has an update on the situation in chicago from our live desk. >> pat, nearly 2,000 flights have been cancelled today and doesn't appear the gridlock is going to let up. this stems from an early morning fire at a facility that handles air traffic coming and going from chicago airports. investigators say it was intentionally set by a contract employee in an attempt to commit suicide. the fire forced all air traffic in the chicago area to come to a complete stop, sending a ripple effect of cancellations and delays across the country. we have team coverage of the situation beginning on news4 at 5:00. adam tuss at reagan national with the impact on local airports and nbc's tom costello with more on the pain being felt nationwide. at the live desk, i'm scott macfarlane. >> scott, thank you.

an unusual case in prince william county today involving a pet. northern virginia bureau chief, julie carey, has our preview now. >> reporter: i've been covering the prince william county courthouse for more than 22 years now. but today i saw something i had never seen there before. a dog on the witness stand. ozzy came to court with his owner. he was there, because the man who abducted him, bound him, gagged him and put him in a trash bag in an attempt to kill him faced sentencing. a second dog, piper, died in the attack. the prosecutor today asked for a stiff jail term to send a strong message about animal cruelty. coming up on news4 at 5:00 and 6:00, i'll tell you what the judge decided and about the impact of this case on the dog's owner. in prince william county, i'm julie carey, news4. it's a story we first brought you first on 4. one moment a man reaches into his car after a south carolina trooper asked for his driver's license. seconds later, the trooper begins to fire. the question is, why did he open

marriott hotel in downtown miami. he then backs up and knocks over two people standing behind the car. when he tries to leave, the car gets trapped behind another vehicle. a hotel worker tries to stop him, but the suspect drives forward again, slams into two cars and finally takes off. at least four people were hurt during all of this. the 50-year-old suspect is now under arrest. a south carolina state trooper is caught on his own dash cam shooting an unarmed man during a traffic stop. the video has outraged a lot of people. but as stephanie gosk reports, the trooper is now defending his actions. >> reporter: moments before the confrontation, the dash cam video shows the officer's car apparently getting ready to leave the gas station when instead he backs up suddenly and stops behind leroy jones, getting out of his truck not far from the gas pumps. >> can i have your license, please?

interpret the video, and told the judge wednesday his client is not guilty and was justified in the shooting. his lawyer disagrees. >> the video evidence clearly does not lie. mr. jones hopes that justice is going to be served in this case. >> reporter: the south carolina department of public safety fired grub effort. the director says in part, i believe this case was an isolated incident in which mr. grubert reacted to a perceived threat when there was none. the officer faces a criminal trial and as many as 20 years in prison. >> jones is recovering after a stay in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. grubert posted a $75,000 bond wednesday night and is scheduled to appear in court october 24th. right now at 5:00, the man accused of abducting a college student from fairfax county is on a plane bound for virginia. thousands of travelers stuck, hundreds of flights cancelled.

david culver joins us now live from charlottesville with a lot of the big developments this evening. david? >> no question, jim. a lot of big developments. and i was just thinking, the last time jesse matthew walked into that police station, it was last saturday and it was as a free man. the next time he returns to charlottesville, it will be in shackles and handcuffs and he'll be taken straight to the jail. in the meantime, as you mentioned, the police chief asking us to move the focus away from matthew and on to finding hannah graham. the six k-9 units like this one, open fields in the woods. today the search for hannah graham stretches into the far reaches of albemarle county. >> we are trying to keep up with, you know, the requests that come over from the tip line, from the police department investigators. when they have stuff that comes in, it needs to be followed up on. we'll send search teams out to those areas. >> rte
