first at 4:00, virginia state police are now connecting the case of missing uva student hannah graham to the murder of morgan harrington five years ago. >> graham has been missing for more than two weeks now. harrington abducted outside a metallica concert back in october of 2009. >> jesse matthew is in jail charged with kidnapping. forensic evidence now connects the graham and harrington cases. >> harrington's body found in a rural field in albemarle county. dna is also linked to a third crime, the sexual assault of a woman in fairfax city from 2005. northern virginia bureau reporter, david culver, live in char charlottesville where matthew is in jail. >> reporter: three unsolved tragic cases police now believe may be linked. they stretch from fairfax all the way down to right here in charlottesvill today police say the forensic

evidence is linked and they say all connects to jesse matthew. right now matthew is behind bars right here in charlottesville. accused of abducting uva student hannah graham. after searching matthew's car and apartment, police now say the evidence they collected links to yet another case, the 2009 disappearance and murder of morgan harrington. the virginia tech student was in charlottesville when she vanished, her remains found a few months later in a field. harrington's case linked to a 2005 case in fairfax. matthew may be connected to all three. we are now entering the third week of searching for hannah graham, police telling us they still don't know where she is. as far as the news here of that link spreading across all of charlottesville, it created quite the reaction, some mixed reactions. we'll share those with you when we see you at 5:00. in charlottesville, virginia, i'm david culver, news4. >> stay with news4 for continuing coverage of the uva cases now connected and for the latest any time, visit our home

page, nbcwashington.com. now to a developing story here in the district this afternoon. one man in custody after some tense moments outside the ethiopian emhe because. cell phone video shows the man with the gun firing off at least one shot with a large crowd in front of him. >> this unfolded along international drive in northwest d.c. early this afternoon. news4's darcy spencer joins us live with details. darcy. >> reporte pat, yeah. this is video is nothing short of incredible. let me tell you where we are. right there on international drive, as you mentioned. you can see the caution tape here. the embassy up the street. we can get nowhere near where the shooting happened earlier this afternoon. let's go again to that videotape. as i said, quite incredible. hard to figure out exactly what this man may have been thinking at the time that he fired this gun. and it's a miracle that no one was hit by this gunfire. the man is described as a staffer with the embassy, right around 12:30 this afternoon.

he was arrested by secret service agents here outside of the ethiopian embassy. apparently there was a small group of protesters here, protesting outside the embassy. people were apparently trying to get this gun from him, which he was waving. and at one point he does, in fact, open fire. again, no one was hurt. a little bit later, we can see police were climbing a tree nearby and looked like one of the bullets had struck a windshield of a car in this area. so, again, a very close call. this could have had a very different ending. the secret service who are here all of the time protecting the embassy obviously responded here very quickly. they deattend the shooter. that shooter now again in custody. it's unclear whether the shooter is facing charges at this time. reporting live from northwest, darcy spencer, news4. first at 4:00, new street cars are rolling on h street right now. you can hop on -- you can't hop on board yet, but he will have

to share the road on your commute home tonight. transportation reporter adam tuss has more on the testing that started today from h street. >> reporter: well, if you ride down h street or northeast, this is a sight you're going to have to get used to. the street cars now on the tracks rolling nonstop. the idea here, to work out the kinks, to get everything where it needs to be. ideally, it should take you about 15 minutes to get from end to end of the street car system, and d-dot says it's important to do this testing. >> we've got to make sure we can go through everything we need to do. they need to experience everything that goes on in this corridor operating those vehicles. so we hope to get those done as quickly as possible, and have service happen before the end of the year. >> reporter: back here now on h street, as the street car tries to make its way, you see it here trying to get the car out of the way. still some things to figure out. coming up at news4 at 5:00, much more about the street car, including something about payments with the street car.

in afternoon, a father in big trouble for allegedly driving drunk and crashing his car with his daughter inside. sean macfarlane was arrested at 8:00 last night in leesburg.

he lives in pennsylvania. officers say he was driving erratically in the area of james monroe highway. then he crashed into an embankment. he and his daughter were not injured. macfarlane was charged with dui and child endangerment the. there are new calls today for a sweeping secret service overhaul after a shocking investigation into the aftermath of a shooting outside the white house. back on november 11th, 2011, a gunman fired several shots at the white house. the "washington post" reports it took the secret service four days to realize the white house was hit seven times. the president and first lady were away at the time, but sasha obama was inside with her grandma. one former agent says the agency could benefit from new . it's an agency that's quite old and kind of done it's thing for a significant amount of time, and it's worked up until now. and this is when you have to change with the times, be progressive.

you're watching news4 at 4:00. a mysterious illness has paralyzed a group of children in the colorado, and now there are calls today for doctors everywhere to look for similar symptoms. >> doctors are wondering if the paralysis is related to the enterovirus that's spreading across the country. >> erika edwards has more on this medical mystery and what to watch out for. >> i felt like i was going to die. >> reporter: wil cornaho is one of hundreds hospitalized the past month with symptoms of an enterovirus. his mother says he had a cold which led to a severe asthma attack. >> he was unresponsive. he was lying on the couch, and couldn't speak to me. was it turning white. had blue lips. >> reporter: will is recovering like most of the nearly 300

confirmed cases of enterovirus d-68 in 40 states. now four children at this hospital in colorado who tested positive for that viral strain have developed troubling neurological symptoms. >> some kids have weakness and some have progressed to paralysis. >> r ten children have been identified with weakness or paralysis in their arms or legs. they range in age from 1 to 19. doctors do not yet know if the enterovirus d-68 is to blame. a similar cluster of paralysis cases was reported in california in 2012, including aaron oil variousa's son. >> i had to take a breath. it was the hardest thing i think i've heard. >> reporter: she was never tested for enterovirus d-68. now public health officials are asking across the country to watch for symptoms of paralysis and weakness and report them to health departments. erika edwards, nbc news.

we drop to 71 by 7:00 p.m. and again late this evening around 9:00, 10:00, that fog will be developing, and stick around for early tomorrow morning, maybe even into the mid morning hours tomorrow. 73 degrees your temperature right now. 70 degrees in manassas and warrenton. 72 warrenton to fredericksburg. 69 at pax river. watch the cloud cover on future weather. as i take you through the next 48 hours, watch the clouds move out of here. then as their skies clear, that's going to allow some fog to form. and i do think it will be throughout our area. areas worse maybe around warrenton, fredericksburg, charlottesville. this afternoon, mostly sunny, to partly sunny sky. maybe a few sprinkles will try and kick off but i doubt any make their way down to us. just too dry. so our model here showing that, our future weather showing that.

you're watching ns4 at 4:00. good afternoon. i'm pat lau son muse. >> and i'm jim handly. we are following breaking news right now out of virginia where forensics now links two high-profile cases in charlottesville. news4's wendy rieger following late developments from the live desk. >> as first reported earlier this afternoon, virginia state police confirm there is a forensic link between the cases of missing hannah graham and morgan harrington, who was abducted in charlottesville five ye harrington's body was found in a field outside of charlottesville three months after her disappearance, and that murder had previously been linked to a sexual assault that occurred in

fairfax county in 2005. today investigators say all three cases are linked to jesse matthew, who is behind bars in charlottesville. police say they got this evidence while they were searching matthew's car and apartment. today our sister station in roanoke spoke with gill harrington, the victim's mother about this forensic link. >> we're in a different phase now. there's a suspect, and possibility of a link to morgan's murder. and i am so pleased that that has happened. but it doesn't change a lot for us. >> we have a team of reporters covering this story. we'll have the late crest at the top of the hour. back to you. >> back here in our area now, the father of two missing toddlers in maryland is now asking the governor to issue an amber alert to help bring them home. troy turner's children, sarah

and jacob hoggle, have been missing three weeks. their mother, catherine, is in custody, but is not cooperating. turner says an amber alert would help spread the word about his children's disappearance. >> i do have a smartphone, and if i were to ask you how many people you know with smartphones, probably everyone you associate with has a smartphone. well, when you issue an amber alert, every single one of those phones is going to get that. >> maryland state police say they did not initially issue an alert because the case didn't meet the criteria, including a confirmed abduction and known threat. the man accused of shooting alexandria police officer peter lavoie is pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. the trial for bashir, the one-time cab driver who allegedly shot officer lavoie in the head last year, got under way today. lavoie survived that shooting, though it left him with a permanent brain injury. the prosecution has called a series of officers involved in bashir's arrest.

one officer said he smelled a strong owed or of alcohol when they apprehended bashir. julie carey will have the latest at 5:00. a developing story out of chicago. three days after that air traffic control center fire crippled service, the impact is still felt today. airlines have cancelled hundreds of flights. nbc's jay gray reports when service will be fully restored and how security is now being improved. >> reporter: thousands of passengers are still on the ground and back in line in chicago. >> we were reroaded to houston and then i had to stay in houston for 12 hours and now i'm in chicago and i have to stay for another 12 hours. >> reporter: for a fourth straight day, hundreds of columbia cancelled after a fire at the regional air traffic control center in aurora, illinois. >> visualize 29 racks of

computer equipment. that's what this system entails. 20 need to be replaced. >> reporter: 36-year-old brian howard, a contract worker at that center, faces federal charges for starting the blaze. >> this is the backbone through which we communicate with all of our other air traffic facilities around the country. >> reporter: repairs to the facility will take at least two weeks, while for the next 30 days, the faa will conduct a full review of security procedures. >> it's additional people, it's additional patrols. it's additional looks -- additional restrictions on access for core pieces of the infrastructure. we want more eyes on the ground, and, you know, much more situational awareness on the part of all of our employees and what's going on in our facility. >> reporter: with the hope of preventing what's going on on the ground right now. jay gray, nbc news. now, the suspect in the fires is being treated for

the store is also looking for folks to process online orders. and just in time for the start of the holiday shopping season, now may be the best time to look at the interest rates and those late fees on your credit cards. you could get a lower rate or even get those fees waived. all you have to do is ask. creditcards.com looked at people who called their credit card company and asked to get late fees waived. most of them -- most of them got a yes from their credit card company. in fact, 90% of customers who asked got their late fees waived. wow. facebook is pushing to become a web-wide advertising platform, like google. and it's doing that by relaunching its network. this is a tool that advertisers can use to reach you even when you're not on facebook. ad list allows marketers to place ads all over the web. targeting customers on their mobile devices, it will also gather information about which ads lead to sales.

a viral video showing someone bending the new iphone 6 with his bare hands has caused an uproar on social media. >> yeah, so "consumer reports conscious decided to do a scientific it test to see if concerns are valid. erika gonzales is here to tell us what they found. >> reporter: this youtube video sparked a viral storm about the new iphone bending. now "consumer reports" has taken one sample each of the iphone 6 and 6-plus, along with other competitors into its labs for stress testing. using this special machine, testers apply force to the phones until they deform. >> it takes a lot of force to permanently bend one of these new iphones or any of the other phones we tested, for that matter. >> reporte en the phones that bent first, the iphone 6 and the htc 1m8 took 70 pounds of force before bending

permanently. the iphone 6-plus took more punishment at 90 pounds. the smaller, thicker iphone 5 outperformed both in the test, with no noticeable deformation until 130 pounds. finally, the lgg 3 and samsung galaxy note 3, 130 pounds and 150 pounds respectively. at that point, their screens separated from their cases and stopped working. so what's the bottom line here? "consumer reports" says based on its comparative tests, while the iphone 6 and 6-plus are not the strongest phones on the markets, fears of a serious structural design flaw seem overblown. apple's official response with this is, quote, with normal use, a bend in an iphone is extremely rare. and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted apple with a bent iphone 6-plus. in short, again, we're talking

right now doctors in bethesda are keeping careful watch over a physician who is exposed to the ebola virus. >> doreen gentzler here in the studio with more on what health officials are saying about this case. doreen? >> hi, jim and pat. the physician had been working at a hospital in sierra leone when officials say he was exposed to the ebola virus. exposed, but not infected by it. nobody is saying that yet. it's unclear whether he's developed any symptoms. but the doctors are monitoring him, and they are prepared to treat him if necessary.

the doctor was transferred to the national institutes of health in bethesda yesterday. they are evaluating his blood, urine, heart and other functions linked to ebola. just because he was exposed to the virus doesn't mean he's going to get sick. >> remember, exposure does not necessarily mean you're infected. so the main purpose of bringing the individual to the nih is to observe the person, if the person winds up requiring some form of intervention, we'll give it to the physician. but right now it's just observational. >> that's, of course, dr. anthony fauci, director of the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases. he says they're not going to release anymore information about the physician being observed here in bethesda. also, health officials are reminding us we don't need to be alarmed. they say the patient at nih is being monitored carefully in a special isolation unit. but that's only out of an

figure out what caused a townhome near camden yards to collapse, trapping one person. and in prince george's county, chopper 4 over the scene for some scary moments when a local construction worker takes a nasty fall into a pit. and developing now, a man is in custody after shots were fired near the ethiopian embassy here in washington. wendy rieger has the latest from the live desk. >> a fairly chaotic scene outside the embassy in northwest d.c. secret service agents arrested an embassy staffer after he fired a gun. it was all caught on camera. >> ethiopian television provided this video. in it, you can see -- you can possibly see the staffer holding a gun in the air as people around him try to get him to put the weapon down. several shots are fired, and secret service agents and police get to that area. no one was injured. they were able to detain this man. and tonight the state department is investigating this. we're going to have a live

update from darcy spencer, coming up on news4 at 5:00. i'll see you then. back to you. >> wendy, thank you. new details about the chaos outside six flags america in prince george's county over the weekend. we now know two teenagers were injured, and one of them is in critical condition with a brain injury. tracee wilkins is working on the story for us. >> reporter: we now have more information as to what happened here on saturday night at six flags in upper marlboro. first of all, we now know there was a 13-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy injured during this medically both transported to hospitals. his brain was swelling to the point that doctors were considering removing a portion of his skull to allow for that swelling to happen over the next month or so. and for it to then die down on its own. but in the last hour, they have decided they don't need to do that surgery right now. so he is still being watched

a man is now in custody, suspended in the disappearance of an arkansas real estate agent. police arrested aaron lewis this morning after a witness saw him standing at a bus stop in little rock. the realtor, meanwhile, is still missing. as hillary hunt reports, volunteers, including her fellow realtors, are helping in the desperate search. >> we're just worried sick. and there's -- we feel so helpless. >> reporter: carl carter is still having trouble grasping the past 72 hours. >> i think as parents, we have so much fear that someone will take our kids. but you never think in a million years someone will take your mom. >> reporter: his mother, beverly carter, went missing thursday while showing a home in scott. search parties now combing that area for the second day in a row. search efforts made up of friends, family members and even out-of-state realtors like jennifer from nashville.
