he's live in charlottesville with the developments. david? >> doreen and vance, this major development tonight is rooted in one thing. forensic evidence. and as soon as this news broke today and this started going out on social media, you could almost hear a collective sigh of relief among some. for others, they're still skeptical. it's been two weeks of uncertainty, uneasiness on the grounds of the university of virginia. students wondering who is behind second-year hannah graham's disappearance and could it be connected to morgan harrington's death. today police say the two are linked and they say jesse matthew is the common thread. >> i am shocked and a little bit scared and caught off guard but also feel closure with it. >> i'm shocked. so shocking. and i just really hope it gets resolved. >> reporte perhaps closure for some, but for jill harrington, still doesn't bring her daughter morgan back. >> i am so pleased that that has happened, but it doesn't change a lot for us. in some ways.
6:01 pm
you know, our bedroom is still empty upstairs. we're still not going to have the grandchild, the wedding though, things. >> rep morgan's remains were found but no one charged. >> i know where morgan is. however this unfolds, i know where my girl is. she's in a box in the living room. hannah graham's family do not know where their daughter is. >> reporter: hannah vanished over two weeks ago. police say she was last seen with 32-year-old jesse matthew following a multiday manhunt, police tracked matthew down last week on a beach in galveston, texas. they flew him back and he's now in jail. after processing evidence seized from matthew's car and home, police say the forensics matched with that of harrington's case, which in turn is connected to a 2005 sexual assault in fairfax. news of the link spread quickly. is there relief, do you think? >> yes. yes. you kind of feel like well maybe another girl might not go missing if they do have the right person.
6:02 pm
>> from what i've heard from a lot of people, i think they're glad somebody, you know, they can put a face to this. >> reporter: others warning of a rush to judgment. >> what does this sign say? he's innocent until proven guilty. >> reporte meantime, we are entering the third week in the search for hannah graham. police brought out atvs, searched much of the city today. but still no sign of hannah. live in charlottesville. i'm david culver, news4. >> david, thank you. shock and relief for people in fairfax after we learned about matthew's link to a rape that happened there almost ten years ago. the victim was leaving a grocery store on rock garden drive when she was ambushed and attacked. our team coverage continues now with mark segraves who is live in that neighborhood with reaction to today's news. mark? >> reporter: well, doreen, just about everyone we spoke with in this neighborhood in fairfax just off germantown road knew about the sexual assault here nine years ago. the news that police may have a

suspect comes as welcome news. this is the sketch the victim gave of her assailant nine years ago. and this is jesse matthew today. >> when we first moved in this area, we heard about the rape that happened dow there after we signed the lease and she was worried about that. >> reporter: it was sometime afda on the evening of september 24th, 2005. the 26-year-old victim had just left this giant grocery store, and was walking to her home about a block away. the woman walked down this sidewalk along germantown road until she reached her apartment complex. it's here, she says, someone came up from behind, grabbed letter and dragged her into the woods. the description she gave police nine years ago matches the description of jesse matthew. and now virginia state police have linked matthew to the sexual assault here. police said today matthew is linked to the 2009 disappearance of morgan harrington, found dead

months after she disappeared from a rock concert. in 2009, harrington's murder was linked to the fairfax assault by dna. the revelation that matthew is connected to harrington's murder is what links him to the fairfax attack. >> we're aware of of what has surfaced this morning with the article referencing charlottesville. we wl not comment on anything related to charlottesville or the state police investig as far as ours, it is still active. we are still investigating it. >> reporter: now back in 2009 after the link between harrington and this case were made, harrington's parents came to this neighborhood and helped to distribute flyers, hoping to catch their daughter's murderer. five years later, three families of three different victims now hope police can finally solve these crimes. reporting live in fairfax, mark segraves, news4. >> thanks, mark. so the question might be asked what those lichx me links mean r the investigation. wendy rieger at the live desk with that report.

identified. >> when i asked vanzant what's next for the investigation, he said police and investigators will be looking closely at other missing persons cases in that region, and that includes the disappearance of a woman in orange, which is just outside charlottesville. that occurred in 2010. and the 2012 disappearance of a woman in charlottesville. they'll be looking for any links to this current case. at the live desk, i'm wendy rieger. back to you. >> thanks, wendy. we posted wendy's entire interview with cliff vanzant online. we invite you to nbcwashington.com and you can find it on our home page. scary moments outside an embassy here in washington today. cell phone video appears to show an embassy employee firing a gun just feet away from a group of protesters. that man was detained and questioned a investigators try to figure out what led up to that shooting. this all unfolded at the embassy of ethiopia on international drive in northwest d.c. this afternoon. news4's darcy spencer joins us from outside that embassy tonight.
