on it for you. but we start with storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein now to show us what you can expect. pretty foggy out there, tom. the live view didn't show the fog but it is patchy fog. you drive along and all of a sudden you're in a wall of fog. watch out for that. use your low beams and slow down coming into the wall of fog. you may not be able to see a pedestrian or deer in the rural areas lurking in the fog. these are the latest visibilities changing. these are at the airport, but just away from the airport you can have patchy, dense fog. dulles down to an eighth of a mile of visibility. and you can see the fog visibility keeps changing on sort of the winds blog around a little bit to cause some of the moisture to change location. right now, just light fog over the capitolith a live view from the capitol camera. for today, the morning fog is now patchy between now and 9:00. after that, a mild afternoon. a chance of maybe a few showers mainly west of the metro area,

west of i-95 late this afternoon and this evening. walking out the door this morning, it's a cool morning. we are in the low 60s in prince george's, montgomery and fairfax county. right by the bay, the mid to upper 60s. a look at the hour-by-hour warming for the day ahead. now we'll check on the traffic early this morning. melissa, what is going on? a good point to keep an eye on the fog, but i want to show you the slowest spot in the area. we are talking stafford county in virginia and northbound on 95, very slow through the triangle to open back up, but we had two earlier crashes causing the slowdown. it will be slow for a while, so allow yourself extra time coming from stafford county. 66 at jermantown road, here's the fog bill is talking about. the fog is not being seen here. just vom volume. 270 southbound is slow to jermantown road. a wider look, no major issues.

d.c. 295 is slow heading east, but that's typical. a warning on the red line to glenmont, we have a delay. 6:02 is the time. the search is an for the person who stabbed a woman in silver spring last night at an apartment complex on piney branch road. megan mcgrath has more on where the investigation stands. >> reporter: montgomery county police are looking for information that will help lead them to a knife-wielding man who stabbed a woman in silver spring last night. this happened around 8:00. just before here in the 930 block of pipeey ranch road. the stabbing may have been related to an attempted robbery. the woman taken to an air

ambulance. i'm megan mcgrath for news4. students at the university of maryland are on alert after a pizza delivery man was robbed late last night at the student apartment complex on boteler lane. an armed man came up, showed a gun and demanded cash. the delivery man was neither a student or university employee. he was not harmed. police sent out the emergency als to warn students. he was charged in the abduction of hannah graham and is now linked to two other crimes spanning nearly ten years. they want specific evidence to link jesse matthew. it was evidence from matthew's home or car that led to his appearance back in 2005. the connection to harrison's case that leads to the case of

rape from 2005. >> however this unfolds, i know where my girl is. she's in a box in the living room. hannah graham's parents do not know where their daughter is. >> matthew is not a suspect in the harrington or rape case, but the forensic evidence found will he help. and doctors have managed to avoid surgery on the boy hurt so far at six flags. we heard the fight was so serious the officer in distress call was issued with hundreds of officers responding to the scene. and if you re your bike to work, according to "the washington pos" the d.c. council wants to change insurance laws right now for a cyclist to collect on insurance. an accident must be completely the fault of the driver.

too bad with patchy, dense fog. three quarter mile visibility in clinton and prince george's county. shenandoah valley, the panhandle of west virginia, down to a quarter mile. fog around here for another couple hours. then by noontime, we'll have partly sunny skies in the lower 70s. the upper 70s later this afternoon with a couple scattered showers around. i'll show you where at 6:21. what is going on now on the roads, anything? not sure if this is fog-related but we have breaking news in frederick. we are talking about southbound buckeytown pike at i-70 with all lanes blocked due to a crash. the alternate is 15. police are on the scene there. as far as other slowdowns, very slow as you head to 95 northbound through stafford opening back up at quantico. before that you are 15 miles per hour. 270 southbound from jermantown road to the beltway, running on top. same thing for outbound near the toll road.

i'm richard jordan at the live desk watching a developing story from hong kong. another day of massive protests that have shut down the city. these are live pictures from hong kong. protesters did set a deadline for wednesday for chinese politicians to meet their demands. wednesday is china's national holiday. that is not going to happen

according to city leaders who say they are not willing to negotiate with these protesters. the protesters demanding that hong kong's chief executive create a real democracy and resign, leave his position. this has led to pretty violent outbursts there on the streets for five days now. protesters have been blocking the main highways in downtown hong kong, disrupting traffic. g with public transportation there. the protesters say they will continue their demonstrations until they get some elections reform. this is also leading to banks and businesses closing. that will be for business in one of the world's financial hubs. the chinese government says negotiating with protesters would make them appear weak. we'll watch developments throughout the day. for now, i'm richard jordan live at the news desk. demonstrators are using the umbrellas to deflect pepper spray and tear gas deployed by local police.

the u.s. officials are urging police there in hong kong to show restraint and to stop using tear gas on citizens. a developing story right now in the fight against isis. australian authorities say they arrested a man in melbourne for helping an american who joined isis. the australian is accused of giving $12,000 to the u.s. citizen. investigators say the money was used to fund the american tra l g to syria. they do not believe the man arrested was plotting any attacks and say there's no specific threat to the public. meanwhile, syrian officials are blasting president obama. they say they have been trying to warn the u.s. about the threat from isis for three years. syria's deputy foreign minister told nbc's ann curry the assad government would welcome cop ration against terrorism. on sunday the president said u.s. intelligence officials underestimated isis and syria but the president also said stabilizing syria will only come

if assad left power. we'll learn to work whether a security guard will face charges for firing into the air near a crowd of protesters at the ethiopian embassy. you can hear how loud that is. nobody was hurt there. and you can see the man holding a gun here. we are told he was trying to break up a crowd that was attacking him. the secret service is not saying whether he had immunity as this happened on embassy property as he's an embassy employee. a local father asking the state of maryland to step up efforts to find his children. the father of 3-year-old sarah and 2-year-old jacob huggle want an awe are alert issued. volunteers have logged hundreds of hours searching for the children but so far it has not been enough to find them. >> i drove down 270 and for days now i have seen a black screen above my head whenever i drive under the electronic board.

why they can't put my children up on the board with their names and ages and that they are missing. >> the children's mother is in custody but the state is not planning to issue an amber alert. the governor's office is continuing to provide support and resources necessary to the search. walmart says comedian tracy morgan is partly responsible for his injuries during a deadly crash in june. according to court documents, morgan was not wearing a seat belt when the walmart truck slammed into the limousine he wa riding in. morgan was critically hurt and another comedian died in the crash. morgan is suing walmart saying it should have nope the truck driver was awake for more than 24 hours before the crash. 6:19 now. a dallas area hospital is monitoring a patient showing signs of being infected with the ebola virus. preliminary test results from the cdc will come back today. the hospital says the patient's symptoms and recent travel indicated a case of ebola. they are holding the patient in

strict isolation right now. the virus has killed more than 3,000 people across west africa. some good samaritans were in the right place at the right time and helped to rescue a woman missing for days. >> and we heard a thump, thump, thump, and we thought it was a prank. somebody was pranking us. >> it was no prank. the mother in louisville, kentucky, was locked in the trunk of a car and the good samaritans called 911 concerned the ambulance was not going to get there in time. >> she said she couldn't breathe. so at that time i got scared, 911 still had not come, so i took a brick and broke the passenger window. >> then they popped the trunk to get the woman out of the car. the woman had no memory how she got there and they believe she may have been hit in the head by someone before being locked in the trunk. when they popped the trunk, she was having trouble breathing. >> thank goodness somebody heard

her. who knows how much longer she could have survived in there. we have breaking news right now. we'll go to melissa mollet with breaking news. we are talking about buckeystown pike at i-70 with the southbound lanes blocked and the northbound turn lanes blocked because of a crash. your alternate is 15. you'll see a slowdown out of 270 just off 70. 66 now heading in through centreville, we are typically slow here. and then it opens back up getting through the area of falls church. another slow spot, 95 out of stafford county, running 16 miles per hour. two earlier crashes causing that slowdown. the beltway at st. barnabas road looking good. no major issues elsewhere. we have fog in some spots and seeing fog off the bw parkway and 95 in maryland. where else are we seeing the fog, tom? it is just patchy fog, it is

not widespread, dense fog we have had in the past. this is just highly isolated, patchy fog we have around. and it is mainly west of i-95 that we are seeing that this morning. so as you're trying to decide what the kids will be wearing out the door this morning, what to wear today? i would say long sleeves and long pants because it's rather cool this morning. only in the low 60s right now. it will stay that way for the next several hours. and the fog will be around through 8:00 this morning. and a little sunshine breaking out with the patchy fog around. then between 8:00 and 9:00, the fog should be gone in the upper 60s and partly sunny. then during the afternoon, we have the possibility of some showers popping up. here's the timing and location of that. by around 3:00, that does appear to be in the mountains and the shenandoah valley. and i'm forecasting the showers to be moving farther to the east and breaking up a bit getting into the early evening hours. this is 7:00 p.m. maybe a few more after that until 11:00 this evening and

nephew. the other two children were on top of the boat waiting to be rescued. >> we kept them calm by telling them it was just like being in a pool but it was like a wave. they had their life preservers on and we held on to them for dear life. >> everyone on board survived. the exact reason why the boat capsized is not clear. the coast guard says the life jackets likely saved everyone's life in this accident. when it comes to shopping for a new car these days, people are less interested in the engine and more interested in the internet. this is according to the latest study showing their car needs internet connectivity. access to a wi-fi or 4g hot spot is increasingly important. 80% of car buyers considered it one of the most important options to have in a car. the younger the car buyer the more important the internet connectivity seemed to be. >> we were saying, this is something that is new in terms of features for a desirable car. >> i wanted navigation and a

sunroof. can i go online? >> clean works for me. a penalty from last night's nfl game. >> it came against the chiefs player as they played the new england patriots. he put his head there on the field. that's technically a violation of the celebration rule, but he was a muslim practicing traditional religious prayer. according to the league's rules, going on one's knee to give praise is exempt from penalty. you see people doing it on one knee, the tebow, for example, but this one apparently they said it was a penalty violation. >> so the league release d or will release a statement later today and probably review the call to reverse it.

ready for? the thickest fog is west of the metro area, western fairfax county, southern loudoun county. right there at reston the visibility is down to a tenth of a mile. around dulles, an eighth of a mile. whereas elsewhere, lk a gaithersburg, ten miles. ten miles in college park. so it is widely scattered. the other visibilities are down to a quarter mile in martinsburg and charlottesville. and many locations out in the mountains, visibilities there are down to a quarter of a mile. so it's a patchy fog. driving along everything is clear and then you drive into a wall of fog. make sure to have the low beams on and slow down if you enter the fog. watch out for students at bus stops with temperatures cool. we are just in the low 60s. the metro area right downtown by the bay in the mid to upper 60s. a look at the hour by hour warming on the way for the day ahead and the all-important nats forecast for friday.

let's check weather and traffic on the 1s coming up at 6:41. breaking news on the roads. >> breaking news right now in frederick county. if you use buckeystown pike at i-70, you'll be shut down. the southbound lanes are blocked and the northbound turn lanes are also blocked. your alternate is 15 because of the earlier crash. taking a look at 270 headed out of frederick, no incidents with a lot of volume down here. then it opens back up heading into the rockville area. also, another accident here in vienna. arlington westbound at covey street. we are looking good at this point. the beltway at coalesville road we'll have travel times coming up in ten minutes. the director of the secret service is going to be on capitol hill to show how they are protecting the first family.

tracie potts is joining us live on the hill to tell us why. >> reporter: in this letter, i've been reading it this morning, the director of the secret service argues that it may not be a good idea to publicly reveal all of the people and the equipment and the tactics used to protect the first family. some of that she says is classified. and she puts it beyond reckless in a public setting. she wanted part of this hearing today to be classified so she could talk more about that. but we do expect her open testimony in three-and-a-half hours before the house oversight and government of affairs committee. she will be asked only about the fence jumper 11 days ago who now according to "the washington po" got all the way inside into the east room and beyond before they caught him. but also a new post report that in 2011 when the seven bullets hit the white house residence, it was four days before the secret service confirmed that.

initially, it was confusion over whether or not a truck backfired or a gang shoot-out somewhere near the white house. all of that comes from questioning today as julia pearson, the head of the secret service goes before lawmakers as they want to know what is going on with protecting the first family. >> we'll be looking for those answers. tracie potts live on capitol hill, thank you. and they have added extra fencing around the white house in response to the new security concerns. you won't be allowed past the fence if you go to the white house. the extra fence is temporary but we'll let you know if that changes because of the new reports. and watch the "today" show to find out details of what the secret service julia pearson says starting at 7:00 right after "news4 today." new this morning, baltimore-bound passengers on the american airlines flight 1654 are back home after an existing day of travel. a blown tire on the airplane delayed them four hours.

140 passengers did not arrive until after 1:00 this morning. they were supposed to get in at 8:55 last night. the plane took off from dallas/ft. worth airport at 5:00 p.m. yesterday. shortly after the flight the tire blew. the pilot circled the airport for two hours to burn off fuel for an emergency landing. the passengers on board told our sister station all they could do was sit there and hope nothing else went wrong. >> i smelled burning rubber when the plane first took off. so the plane circling around -- >> yeah, i mean, it smelled like rubber bunning up. >> after a few hours passengers boarded another plane and made it safely to bwi marshall. a baltimore man waking up safer after being trapped underneath all of this. look at that, a home collapsing. testifies buried under a ton of debris yesterday. crews spent four hours trying to

police aren't saying exactly what this new evidence is, but the break in the case comes after investigators searched the suspect's car and his apartment and submitted dna evidence to the crime lab. now this morning the investigation into jesse matthew's past is unwinding just days after being arrested in west texas and brought to virginia. his arrest and new evidence provided a significant break in another unsolved abduction case. you may remember back in 2009 when morgan harrington, a virginia tech student, left a concert here in charlottesville and her body was found three months later in a field. after her body was found, investigators linked that crime to another unsolved sexual assault back to 2005 some 100 miles away in fairfax. now jesse matthew has not been charged in connection with the two other crimes, but he is xharnlged with abduction with intent to defile in the case of hannah. he has not entered a plea and

for a person who stabbed a woman in silver spring just before 8:00 last night at the apartment complex on hiney branch road. investigators believe the stabbing could be connected to a robbery attempt. police have not been specific about the woman's condition but is expected to be okay. i'm richard jordan at the live desk. just in, the body of a missing realtor has now been found. beverly carter has been missing since last week. she didn't show up back at her home after an appointment last week. well, this morning overnight her body was found in a shallow grave about 18 miles from where she was last seen out in arkansas. apparently this was near a concrete mixing business. 33-year-old aaron lewis is charged with her kidnapping. it looks like this morning the charges will be upgraded to capitol murder. that's the latest from the live desk. thank you, richard. 6:48. today a former presidential candidate mitt romney comes to northern virginia. he'll headline a fund-raiser for

just about ten minutes ago we could barely make out the dulles toll road and the reston parkway, but now we are starting to see it a little bit. visibilities are beginning to improve with the fog lifting a bit. be careful driving along right into thick fog. so use the low beams and slow down this morning. watch out for students waiting for buses. they'll be at the bus stop shortly. we are on the cool side in the low 60s for much of the region. so accordingly, what you wear today, long sleeves and long pants to stay comfortable this morning. it will be rather cool for another two to three hours in the low 60s. then between now and 8:00, the fog is going to be lingering between 8:00 and 9:00. partly sunny by then with temperatures in the up per 60s y midmorning. then we'll go partly sunny with the possibility of some showers popping up. here's the timing on that at 3:30 in the shenandoah valley and the panhandle of west
