>> we received the communications center, a call at 2:33 p.m. that call was for a personal injury collision on piney meeting house road at representative road. officers responded, located one person in that vehicle. that person is deceased. at 2:34 p.m., our communications center received a call for a fire at a nearby residence. officers responded to that residence and located a deceased person. >> reporter: right now police are waiting for a search warrant to go inside that house on great elm and to continue trying to put together the pieces of exactly what happened here. live in potomac, jackie bensen, news4. we have more breaking news this evening. a suspended teen gunman is now in custody after a school shooting in kentucky. this happened this afternoon at fern creek high school. it's just south of louisville. pat lawson muse is at our live desk with details. pat? >> reporter: wendy, we have just learned that police officers captured the teenager within walking distance of the school.

investigators say he took off after shooting a classmate and was on the run for several hours. police immediately cleared out the school after this morning's attack, and you can see here on the video students walking out with their hands on their heads. the victim is now recovering in the hospital, and is okay. but it's not clear yet if the students knew the shooter or if the suspect even attended that school. this was the second school shooting in the southeast. today a 15-year-old boy in north carolina shot a classmate in the leg, then walked into the principal's office and waited for police to come and get him. back to you. >> pat, thank you. tonight a local teacher is in jail, accused of having a sexual relationship with one of her male students. and the teacher's husband works at the same school. colonial forge high school, that's in stafford, virginia. and that's where we go now to news4's kristin wright with the late details on this. kristin? >> reporte well, jim, we learned today deputies came here

to the school afterlasses let out yesterday. they escorted teacher erica mesa to the sheriff's office where she was arrested. on the left, a school picture of northern virginia geometry teacher, erica mesa. on the right, her mug shot. the colonial forge high school teacher is in jail tonight, accused of sending naked pictures of herself to a student. parents picking up their children are stunned. >> i just think it's a really sad thing she did. we want to keep our kids safe, and it's just unbelievable that it happened to be her. >> reporter: the stafford county sheriff's office says mesa, 27, was involved in a sexual relationship with the 16-year-old this fall and twice last school year. he turned 17 sometime during the alleged sex crimes. the school got an anonymous tip. what do you think about the possibility she might have actually sent nude photos to a student? >> i don't even know what to say about that.

>> reporter: mesa was put on administrative leave. she teaches geometry and coaches volleyball. she has been at colonial forge since 2009. me school.lso tea a the sheriff's office says their investigation isn't over and there may be more charges against mesa to come. >> it is just unbelievable situation. and i just hurt for the families involved. >> repor we tried to reach out to mesa's family, but a person inside of her home did not wish to speak to us. tonight at 6:00, we'll explain how social media played a role in mesa's arrest. in stafford county, kristin wright, news4. we now have the latest for you in the search for hannah graham. charlottesville police chief timothy longo says they have received at least 3,000 tips, but at this point, no signs of the missing uva student. and investigators have not had a chance to speak again with jesse matthew, who is charged in her disappearance, and he will have

a bond hearing later this week. for now, police are focused on the search. >> sometimes the facts will drive my decision. sometimes that decision is going to have to be made by the heart. right now, we'll continue that search. >> an online pool to raise money for matthew's defense has been taken down. the woman who created the page says she got threatening posts. before it went offline, matthew apparently got about $1800 in donations. at this point, jesse matthew's lawyer says police have not told him about any evidence that they have that connects his client to graham's disappearance or to the murder of morgan harrington. but that link made by virginia state police could be a major break for a case in our area. news4's pat collins is live in fairfax with more. pat? >> reporter: wendy, this is a case that likely will be solved in the crime lab.

investigators say jesse matthew, linked by forensic evidence to the disappearance of hannah graham september 13th. investigators say jesse matthew linked by dna evidence to the murder of morgan harrington back in 2009. investigators say jesse matthew linked by dna evidence to the beating and sexual assault at fairfax city nine years ago. focus now on the fairfax city case. it was a saturday night, september 24th, 2005. they say a 26-year-old woman was walking home from the grocery store. she was walking down germantown road. but when she got to rock garden drive, they say a man grabbed her, picked her up and literally carried her down the street. near the swimming pool at the end of the street, they say that man sexually assaulted the woman. someone walking by frightened him and he took off.

the woman then ran for help. at the time witnesses said she appeared to be badly beaten and bloo this is a composite sketch of the suspect released at the time of the assault here in fairfax. now look at it next to the mug shot of jesse matthew. so there was an attack in 2005. then four years later, an attack in 2009. then five years later, another attack. how do you explain the gap in time? hear now from profiler, clint van zandt. >> if we have a serial offender, perhaps a serial rapist in these cases, number one, there's no real accountabliineg accounting for the length of time between the crimes. number two, we may have unreported crimes. >> reporter: jesse matthew lived in charlottesville. jesse matthew went to school in charlottesville. jesse matthew worked in charlottesville. what would cause him to come to

fairfax city in 2005? i'm still working on that one. live in fairfax, pat collins, news4. >> pat, thank you. there are new cases of vandalism apparently targeting the hindu community in northern virginia. there have been three reported cases in the last week, all in the ashburn and graham bellton areas of loudoun county. each of the cases involve graffiti on community signs. now investigators tell us they believe they could be connected to several other cases of vandalism found earlier this month. despite several days of searching, there are still no signs of a young man who has autism who disappeared in maryland. his name is de johnnie stone. no one has seen him since last thursday when he left a work service program that he attends during the week in frederick. the staff members of the facility activated his tracking bracelet, but they think he may be too far out of range. police say stone has a history of wandering.

most recently he wound up on a highway in laurel. >> long lines, packed platforms and crowded trains had metro riders seeing red today. it was a long morning commute for thousands of people thanks to a cracked rail at dupont circle. delays were felt as far away as rockville. our transportn reporter, adam tuss, live at dupont circle to explain just what happened and what metro has to say about it all. adam? >> reporter: actually, jim, metro is apologizing tonight to all of the red line riders, and what a day it has been trying to get back and forth. and we have learned tonight that a temporary patch is in place along that section of track where the cracked rail happened. tonight a permanent fix will have to happen. the pictures from social media tell the story. packed platforms and stations up and down the red line. some riders with a look the disgust. a slow roll to work that delayed many over an hour. >> so, yeah, people were very frustrated. some people weren't even getting on the trains at the platform. they left the doors open so

people just started leaving and either to walk or take the bus. >> reporter: she is just one of those stuck in the mess. she tweeted out this picture when she got to union station. she takes the red line every day from union station to white flint, normally a 45-minute trip. today, two hours. we caught up with her outside her work in white flint. >> i wouldn't expect that sort of, you know, infrastructure problems from d.c. metro. i mean, it should be up and working. >> reporte met low says it's actually doing well in the fight against cracked rails, and this situation was detected by its own internal signal system. >> we're working at it. our last crack was more than a month ago. which is better. if you recall, two or three years ago, we were having these, you know, two or three in some days. >> repor this is what it looked like when a third rail cracked last month on the blue line. met low does say it believes this morning's incident happened on a stretch of track that's the original section of track put down 40 years ago.

doreen gentzler has details from the live desk. doreen? >> reporte hi, jim. the first case of ebola diagnosed here in the u.s., the centers for disease control, is hang to hold a news conference at 5:30. we are waiting for that to reveal more details. mere is what our nbc affiliate in dallas has learned so far. it's believed the affected patient is in dallas, because the health and human services director in that city was one of the first to learn about this diagnosis. doctors it at a dallas hospital also began testing a patient for possible ebola yesterday. that person has been in strict isolation. four americans have contracted the deadly disease while working for missionary groups in west africa. but this is the first confirmed case to be diagnosed here in the united states. we'll bring you up to speed on what's revealed at that news conference at 5:30 from the there's for disease control in atlanta. at the live desk, i'm doreen gentzler. >> this is your emergency broadcast system, announcing the

one boy seriously injured. >> that the pressure that we thought was going to be okay with his brain had begun to swell. >> repor this 15-year-old boy has now undergone serious surgery that could change his life. >> they have removed a portion of his skull to allow for the brain to expand. and he's going to be in icu for at least two weeks. >> reporter: this after he was beat unconscious by a group of strangers outside the gates of six flags in upper marlboro saturday. >> they proceeded to beat him as he fell back and cracked his skull, and was unconscious. they continued to beat him. >> reporter: according to witnesses, a number of fights spread throughout the large crowd as teens left six flags, opening fright fest night. there were three reported injuries. a 13-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy were transported from inside the park. and this teen was found on central avenue outside the park's gates. >> one can only imagine a mother

77 degrees, winds right now out of the south. we've got a dew point at 59. plenty of sunshine right now. and temperatures have responded to the sun. 77 here, 81 in frederick. 75 in fredericksburg. 72 towards the leesburg area after some fog earlier today. right now, though, watching some storms. not much around our region and most of us should stay on the dry side. morgan county, west virginia, washington county, right along 70 here. and down to the south. coming in towards hardy county, frederick county, virginia, heads up this line a pretty strong line of storms moving off towards the east. not moving too fast but hagerstown, martinsburg and winchester. this is what the future weather shows as we move through the night tonight. 8:00, those storms moving along 70 in through frederick county, frederick and then watch what happens during the evening. we start to see some storms develop along i minnesota 95 and they could drift towards our area as we make our way through the overnight hours. so we will see some shower activity later this evening, but

i'm not expecting a whole lot of it. the storminess should stay to the north of the d.c. metro area, but here's tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. we saw a lot of fog this morning. i think we'll see a lot of fog tomorrow morning. so heads up for that as you make your drive there. by noon, though, the fog out of here. we see an isolated shower chance during the day tomorrow, but all in all, a similar day to what we have seen across our region today. there is the fog that gave way to the sunshine. and there's the storminess that's making its way in. this is actually a frontal boundary, a cold front, a strong cold front, actually, that will just bypass this to the north. but the next front will not bypass us. that one comes in during the day on friday. so 77 tomorrow. 75 on thursday. 77 on friday. friday afternoon looks great, especially for the nationals game. no problems there, whether it's a 12:00 or 3:00 game. i think we're fine. these will be late storms. but here comes the cool weather. 69 on saturday. 65 on sunday with plenty of sunshine. and in e city, we're going 45. so that puts many of you around 35, 36 degrees.

musician puts on quite a show at union station. first at 5:30 tonight, some tough questions for the secret service director. >> 11 days after a man with a knife made it into the white house, julia pierson testified she is still trying to figure out how it happened. she testified before congress today, caulkig the incident unacceptable. she says she takes full responsibility. pierson also says she's not sure why agents failed to keep that intruder out. >> we have a security procedure that wasn't followed. one week prior, an individual had climbed the fence and was arrested within seconds. >> through his spokesperson today, president obama says he has full confidence that pierson will implement needed reforms. nbc's chris jansing joins us live outside the white house. we understand there was an indictment filed in this case today. >> reporter: yeah, that has just come down against omar gonzalez. three counts,ncluding a federal count.

could take as much as it ten years in prison on just one count alone. unlawfully entering a restricted building while carrying a deadly weapon, charged with two violations of district of columbia law, carrying a dangerous weapon outside a home and unlawful possession of ammunition. all of this came on the day when julia pierson, head of the secret service, faced a blistering attack. she said, as you pointed out, she accepted responsiby and it's not going to happen again. but it was clear from the bipartisan criticism of her that they weren't necessarily buying it. she was accused of a cover-up. it was suggested that the next person who got over the fence could be a terrorist. and eleanor holmes norton of the district of columbia suggested that the secret service needs a 21st century makeover, wendy and jim. but as you pointed out, the president's spokesman said today he continues to have confidence in the secret service. well, what happens now to the next person who jumps over that fence?

this 2014 land rover remained on the loi. it had a blue tag with the words arrest and tunnel command. it belongs to olympic swim e michael phelps, arrested earlier in the morning charged with driving under the influence, excessive speed and crossing double lane lines in the ft. mchenry tunnel. some fans of the olympic complete can't believe another baltimore sports figure is making negative national headlines. >> i think in light of what's going on in sports and all eyes on prominent athletes, he should have known better, and at this stage in his life he should have made better decisions. >> as the mother of a swimmer who adores him, you know, that's -- not a great decision. >> reporter: transportation auy police say an officer operating radar caught phelps traveling southbound from baltimore on interstate 395 at an excessive rate of speed. 84 miles per hour in a 45-mile-an-hour zone. phelps then went north on interstate 95, driving through the ft. mchenry tunnel.

the officer followed. shortly after paying the toll, phelps was pulled over. according to mdta police, he appeared to be under the influence and was unable it to satisfactorily perform a series of field sobriety tests. >> i think he should be held accountable to the same exact penalties anybody else is held accountable to. you or i if we were arrested. i think he should be held accountable to the same thing. doesn't matter who you are or what position you hold. you need to be held to the same accountability as ever >> phelps issued an apology on twitter saying, quote, i understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. i know these words may not mean much right now but i am deeply sorry to everyone i have let down. similar words back in 2004 when phelps was arrested in salisbury and charged with du skpi i and driving while impaired. then he was 19 and said he had made a mistake and called drinking and driving dangerous and unacceptable. >> he's a great athlete. i have the utmost respect for

the vehicle, the interest rate on that loan and if you plan to bring in the old car, the value of your trade-in as well. well, soon your facebook friends could determine your credit score. financial experts say within the next decade, banks may request access to a client's facebook account to see whether you have a stable network of connections. those who frequently change friends are more of a credit risk, they believe. something else the banks might do, they may replace your debit cards with your cell phones. the d.c. bag tax that raised millions of dollars to help clean up the anacostia river is costing local businesses. according to records obtained by news4 through the freedom of information act, more than 100 businesses have been fined for failing to charge that tax. offenders have ranged from mom and pop shops to nationwide chains, too. failure to collect the fee comes

the petworth neighborhood. today, a set of protocols was announced to make sure something like that doesn't happen again. >> so now when the mayor does the neighborhood walk threw, there is going to be a team put into place to do a canvassing of the neighborhood, they're going to do an assessment of the languages he might encounter. >> repor during that 2013 walk-through, mayor gray was cracking down on synthetic marijuana to kids. leaders in the ethiopian community are still upset about how the mayor treated the clerk. >> outrageous. >> reporte the access coalition monitors the government's compliance with foreign language requirements. >> that incident came to the attention of the language activist coalition and the city at large through the news. nbc 4 covered this story and showed the footage of the mayor reaching this sort of language impasse. >> something needs to happen. something needs to change. what happened to the shop keeper would never happen again sgh in a statement, mayor gray said he was pleased his office of

about a deadly group of mental illnesses. eating disorders. that group rallied on capitol hill today, urging congress to pass legislation that calls for new research and education on eating disorders. as well as appropriate treatment. they say that 20% of people with serious eating disorders die without treatment. one local participant who lost a friend to this illness says she's frustrated. >> the moms and dads who are here today who have lost their loved ones didn't have to. and it's why we need it to pass. it's ridiculous. this is a totally treatable disease. and i don't know what it's going to take. like a member of congress to lose their son or daughter to an eating disorder? but we need their help and we welcome it. >> the activists are hoping to make today's rally an annual event. ♪ a world-famous musician returns to the scene of a legendary prank in the district.

but this time he has plenty of company at union station. yep, it was standing room only this time for fans of vialinist joshua bell. a few years ago, he was just as famous, but pretended to be a d.c. street musician to see if anyone recognized him. news4's tom sherwood found out that the music lovers didn't want to miss this chance again. ♪ >> reporter: that was joshua bell playing anonymously seven years ago as passers-by barely noticed or took time to listen. >> roughly 1,000 people walked right by that man, as though he were some sort of nuisance. >> reporter: but not today. at union station, bell got the rock star welcome he deserved and the post won a pulitzer prize for the concert story. ♪

by a rumble of thunder or two. temperatures around 67 degrees. here's the radar. once again, nothing around most of the region. it's well back towards the west as we're looking at these storms. but they continue to develop. and we have seen a lot of lightning associated with these. very heavy rain associated with these too. you notice where they are, morgan county, west virginia, hampshire county. frederick county and washington county, maryland. on this track, as they're moving east fairly quickly here, martinsburg, get ready around 6:11. hagerstown right around 6:21 and so heads up as they continue to move off towards the east. here's the future weather for us. frederick around that 8:00 hour, as we mentioned. and notice some shower it activity around i-95. that's what we're going to be watching as we head through the rest of the evening tonight. we'll be here walking you through it. clear skies early tonight or rather clearing skies. that could lead to fog. so early fog tomorrow morning. and then clearing skies during the afternoon. temperatures 75 to 79. heads up for that fog early. it could be quite dense in some

areas. and look at this. 77 on wednesday. 75 on thursday. 77 on friday. now we do have a chance for some storms on friday. but if you're heading out towards the nationals game, it's either a 12:00 or a 3:00 start. no problem here. i think the daytime will be fine. temperatures in the low to mid 70s during the day and even around 6:00, maybe showers possible. but we should get those afternoon games in. no problem. same goes for the baltimore games on friday. saturday and sunday, though, much cooler. talk about a fall cooldown. high temperatures only around 65 on sunday. and most areas will start off in the 30s. we have some breaking news now about the first case of ebola in the united states. a news conference at the centers for disease control still ongoing. but just revealing that that patient who came into the country came from liberia and started showing symptoms on september 24th when he was in dallas. that person was in dallas. that person was not admitted into a hospital until the 28th.

a weekend fishing trip turned into a scary situation for a family down in florida after their boat overturned in the gulf of mexico. >> this happened just off sanibel island. the family is safe. holly hoeek spoke with one of the survivors. >> reporte three young children stranded in the choppy waters of the gulf for hours after the fishing boat they were in capsized over the weekend. >> please, our boat flipped off of sanibel. someplace off sanibel island, our boat sap sized and there's three small kids on board. >> reporter: three small kids no older than 5 and four adults. >> stay calm. >> reporter: carlos was an the boat when it started to capsize. he says there was some kind of mechanical issue. >> here is the stern, who are is the bow. it went down like that. >> reporter: this uncle's only concern was the three young children on board. two of them, his nephews. >> grabbed the kids and the boat was going down very fast and jumped out of the water.

treaded water for a while. and before we were able to get a phone call out. it seemed like forever before we got a phone call out. >> reporter: he said he held on to his nephew and battled the choppy waters for almost two hours while the other two kids climbed on top of the capsized boat and waited to be rescued. >> we kept them calm by telling them it's just like being in a pool except a wave. they had life preservers on first and we held on to them for dear life. >> reporter: sanibel island fire department rescued the stranded aborts. everyone on board was okay. the exact reason why the boat capsized is unclear. now at 6:00, the director of the secret service grilled on capitol hill today after a series of missteps by the age y . the dramatic exchanges as we learn new details about the latest white house intruder. one man linked to three crimes. tonight police are trying to replace jesse matthew's move as the search for a missing uva student continues.
