another call came in for a fire at that same location. after the fire was put out, the discovery was made. >> we also found a deceased subject in that garage. we're working on the presumption that that is carolyn mattingly. >> reporter: just one minute before the call for the fire came in, a call came in for a car crash two miles away. >> there was a lone male occupant in that vehicle deceased. >> r police say the cipher of tha of that car was a rocca and a handgun -- racca leading them to believe he killed himself. he worked with carolyn mattingly's husband at the cystic fibrosis foundation. just hours before carolyn mattingly was murdered, racca and mattingly's husband had a confrontation wo racca had bee

accused, there was allegations he had been involved in workplace theft. >> the spokesperson for the cystic fibrosis foundation said we are cooperating fully with the investigation and we are concerned for the welfare of the mattingly family and share our deepest sympathies with them during this time. while mr. mattingly worked with andrew racca, there is no indication the victim knew him. >> there was no association or relationship between andrew racca and carolyn mattingly. >> reporter: police say this is a fluid investigation and they're waiting on the autopsy both victims until they can conclusively say what happened, they're asking the public what they might offer. coming up at 6:00, what police say happened in an encounter with the victim moments before

she died. in involving the secret service, a change at the top. julia pierson resigned as director of that agency protecting the president and the family. the homeland director accepted her resignation after two recent high profile security breaches. officials are making it clear there need to be a change in the culture immediately. >> over the last several days we have seen recent and accumulating reports raising questions about the performance of the agency and the president concluded new leadership of that agency is required. >> president obama recommended joe clancy who previously serve as agent in charge of the secret service take charge until a permanent replacement is found. this man, omar gonzalez, pleaded not guilty to the

charges against him. before that hearing, the judge actually ordered a forensic screening to determine whether he can stand trial. gonzalez's attorney plans to fight that screening. his next hearing is set for later this month. a teenager is dead after what appears to be an accident. two boys, best friends, in an apartment with a gun. at some point one of them pulled the trigger shooting the other. this evening, there's questions whether any will face charges. pat collins joins us at the scene northeast d.c. >> reporter: wendy, they were the best of friends. if you saw one, you'd see the other. everyday, they'd play video games together. then, last night, gunplay. now, one of them's dead. we beginni our story with some words from t godfa of the teen shall pulled the trigger. >> i wouldn't think they were playing with it because he knows

better. clearly, he had a bad choice of judgment last night. >> reporter: 13-year-old ty caldwell shot by his best friend in what some would describe an accident. my god son is an honorable student. his school is right up the street. you can go to his school. >> reporter: at the time it happened the mother of the 14-year-old shooter and father of the 13-year-old victim were standing outside the building talking to each other. the father told me when he got to his son's side, the teenager was crying out for help. daddy hurt, he said. daddy hurt. >> they came out and when they brought the little boy out, he was just hollering it hurts. i guess that's the end of what happened because when he got in the ambulance, we were hoping he made it. >> reporter: as the father of the victim was driving away today he said he hoped no charges would be brought against the shooter. he asked not to be identified.

>> i hope he doesn't get charged. >>why? >> because they were friends and they both did something stupid. i hope they don't get charged. >> reporter: the scene, a third floor apartment in the 1300 block of downing street in the northeast. an apartment the 14-year-old shooter shares with his mother. crime scene techs were there for hours today. sources say the case is being investigated as a possible accident. they say if it's determined the gun belonged to the 14-year-old's mother, she could face criminal charges. today, the father of the victim told me that he feels like a failure. i should have been there, he said. i should have had him doing something else. live in northeast, pat collins, news4. let's head outside and look at the skies. we had a bit of a wet start but turned out to be a pretty good

police say they put a skimming device at the bank of america. investigators say the pair managed to use stolen information from more than a dozen cards to withdraw thousands of dollars at atms in the district. developing in virginia, authorities are checking to see if other unsolved cases in the commonwealth may be side to the abduction of a college student. the suspect jesse matthews already linked to morgan harrington's murder and authorities in lynchburg are looking at any connection between matthews and cassandra morton. her body was found in campbell, virginia, a month after she disappeared in 2009. police tell us they hope they can find out what they can to find hannah graham. >> there are linkages. we all know that. some of those linkages may drive

some of our search efforts and some may not. matthew is expected to make his first court appearance tomorrow. they'v received 3,000 tips and focusing outside of the county. a high profile resident of falls church, not the first time. michael gardner, the former head of the domestic committee and former husband of the city mayor being held without jail. the victim was a family member and 13 years old in 2009 at the time of the alleged abuse. you may remember two years ago, gardner was convicted of arresting 10 and 11-year-old girls at his slumber party. that conviction was overturned by a virginia supreme court on a technicality that they should have allowed the defendants to use character evidence. a good samaritan was trying

to break up a fight and save his son from getting hurt. we just found out what happened before outside a swim club. police have just wrapped up a press conference. tracee. >> reporte police of eyewitness and a number of people identifying their susp t now, they need the public's health finding him. police say 19-year-old deion warren, a man, accused of shoot ing and killing his son. >> they found michael white in the parking lot, suffering from an upper body wound. >> according to police, there was an argument between two groups of kids and continued outside the bel air swim and racquetball club last night. >> as our victim attempted to intervene another subject, not the one involved in the altercation with his son

produced a handgun and shot our victim one time. >> reporter: the teens were getting the best of the teen when his dad stepped in and richard white was found dead. warren is their suspect. >> detectives have obtained an arrest warrant charging him with first-degreer and other charges. we continue to follow leads and log for mr. warren. >> reporter: the parking lot is a popular cut through for bowie high school students. the victim's son is a student at bowie high. >> prince of george's county police need help. they're offering a $20,000 reward if it ends up in conviction in this case. they don't need to know who you are. where they believe the suspect ye hiding out.

new for the town of bowie, haven't had a homicide in two years. news4. on the international front in iraq, more air strikes against isis today. that militant group continues to advance towards the capital of baghdad. so far, it appears isis has surrounded the city on three sides. military experts say it is unlikely the group will capture baghdad without a major fight. right now, isis has control of dozens of iraqi cities and border crossings. tonight, the united nations say more than a thousand iraqis have died in violence just in september. most are civilians and the worst hit city is baghdad. the figures are likely much higher because the death tolls don't include the killings from an islamic state. what you need to send that number by voice mail, a

we're staying on top of a developing story in the district. police are investigating the sho in the northeast. we're told the scrimmage was hurt very badly. three men were seen driving away from the area just after the shooting. wey on top of this and bring you updates as they come in to news4. school is going to be open tomorrow at sandy hook elementary. there was a bomb threat that sent students home today. after a bomb threat the students and teachers were taken to a different school. after a check they didn't find anything. it has been almost two years since a gunman killed 21st grade students and several teachers. smoke on a plane caused an all out evacuation today. it happened on a united flight headed for buffalo, new york. passengers began to feel sick after smelling smoke in the cabin area. they were evacuated and had to

be treated at the scene. turns out the dore was caused by some type of mechanical issue and united had to book new flights for all of the passengers. we have a consumer alert for you that might have your phone ringing off the hook. the callers are persistent and the pitch is real. new at 5. erika gonzal joins us with details. phon are ringing across our region with the promise of free money in the form of a government grant. it sounds real good, right? it is a scam. now we learned how to stop those callers in their tracks. >> reporter: nick spent nearly an entire day answering his phon i got eight more calls that day, roughly a half hour apart all day long from the same people about the same thing. >> reporter: the caller, his government grant had been approved. the catch, he never applied for

a government grant typically used for researchers and nonprofits. very clearly they wg to represent they were representas of the government. >> reporte cole is not alone. more than 5,000 complaints were filed for what are called imposter scams in 2013. with these phony grant calls like the one cole received, scam artists might ask for a checking account number or request you pay a processing fee. if you get a ring from someone claiming your grant has been approved, the better business bureau says hang up. beware, callers can be persistent and persuasive. other ways to avoid getting duped, never give any financial information over the phone. no. you never have to make a payment in advance in order to receive a real government grant. finally, report the calls to the trade commission and government

one year and seven months after an alexandra police ofr shot in the head on his motorcycle, the man who's accused of pulling the trigger is on trial. tonight, we are hearing new deta about bashir as his lawyers try to prove he is not guilty by reason of insanity.

>> bashir is accused of shooting the officer leaving him with permanent brain injury. outside the courthouse in alexandra, court has just wrapped up for the day. chris. >> reporter: good evening. officer laboy has attended this trial in the courtroom sitting in front listening intently everyday since the trial began on monday. he is not going to testify however because today prosecutors wrapped up their case. the final prosecution witnesses were doctors who testified that police officer peter laboy suffered permanent brain injury as a result of the shooting. he still has a portion of the bullet in his brain and may never get better than he is now. then the defense lawyers began their case. called as a witness dr. daniel testified bashir is a paranoid schizophrec and lost touch with reality believing people controlled his thoughts and the fbi controlled his behavior. the doctor said bashir thought

he was dead already. the doctor contends the 29-year-old is not guilty by reason of insanity in the 27th 2013 shooting of officer laboy when he stopped bashir's taxi. the father seen in an earlier hearing testified he shared a cab with his son and he found a gun under the seat and accidental discharge add shot. they reported to it the police and he said he knew nothing about the gun. bashir's father was asked if he was ever worried about his son's behavior? said sometimes. does the son drink alcohol? we doesn't, we're muslim. was he surprised the boy had been drinking the day the officer was shot? he said, yes. one of his five sisters testified in court today he was quiet and she never saw him angry. friends testified, friends who

was found guilty of murder. the jury reached their verdict after five hours of deliberating. prosecutors say michael dunn fired 10 shots into an suv filled with young people in 2012. one of the young people inside, 17-year-old jordan dis died. dunn could face a potential life sentence. in colorado the trial of a man charged in a mass shooting at a movie theater will be allowed to be broadcast. a judge ruled news organizations can broadcast the trial when it begins in december. crews will not be allowed to bring in their own cameras. some of the victims' families said video would give the suspected gunman unwarranted attention. james holmes is accused of killing 12 people and wounding dozens more for the premiere of "batman" in 2012. huge bargain for owners of an atlantic casino. the now defunct rebel casino hotel sold at auction for $110

welcome back. i'm chris lawrence. the first case of ebola in the united states, united airlines said the first patient flew on the bull less flight. his flight came from brussels to lull less in virginia and to dallas last month. tonight, that patient is in

serious but stable condition and the hospital was confirming duncan was sent home from the facilitate with antibiotics two days before he was admitted even though he told an intake nurse he had just come home from liberia. now, they're looking for any who had contact with him in texas including a group of school-aged children. while the ebola outbreak has gone out of control in west africa, health officials here say there's no need to panic. how this virus has spread. >> hi. no reason to panic and every reason to have confidence in our nation's response to the first ebola virus here. it can be very contagious but it is not that easy to come into contact with it. we've been seeing awful scenes from west africa for weeks now and it is frightening. the lack of good medical care there is a big reason why the virus has spread in west africa

and we will not be seeing anything like that on u.s. soil because we have so many safeguards and emergency responses in place. and someone who has undiagnosed ebola virus won't infect others. ebola is not from the flu or other respiratory illnesses. you can only get sick if you come into direct contact with body fluids or urine. e showing symptoms of the s if virus. the patient in dallas did not develop symptoms until several days after he got off the plane and why though believe there wasn't exposure on the plane or dulles airport. the symptoms, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. the u.s. is better equipped to handle these cases, isolation

tracy morgan said he can't believe wal-m is trying to blame him for injuries related to a deadly crash with a delivery truck. he's currently suing the company for that crash that killed one of his friends. wal-mart said morgan and his friends were not wearing seatbelts when the truck hit their limo bus. the driver of that truck has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide.
