big changes are coming to your morning commute if you take metro. metro begins replacing escalators at one of its busiest station. as bethesda metro station you'll have one less escalator to use. one going up and one going down. extra staff will be on hand to make sure things go smoothly and you catch your train on time. the whole project will take two years and the new escalators will be more durable and reliable. also today, you may find it hard to get a cab in montgomery county. union cabbies say cab temperatures are charging too much to lease their cars. they plan a slow moving traffic protest at 11:00 this morning. cab drivers in silver spring and bethesda will make their way to the county executive building in rockville. they'll ask county leaders to start regulating leasing fees for cab drivers. the search for hannah graham is getting more aggressive. hannah has been missing over three weeks now. more than 100 officers and volunteers spent the weekend

branch avenue is looking good as is 66 and 95. coming up in a couple minutes, a live look at 270. i'll see you at 4:41. 4:33 our time right now. happening today, the u.s. supreme court will begin hearing cases for its new term. among them a pennsylvania man argues his facebook post about killing his wife and shooting up a school were rap lyrics and not actual threats. and the most anticipated case of the term will be gay marriage. both sides are looking to the justices to decide whether same-sex marriage is a constitutional right or something states alone should allow. also today, a new interim director takes over the secret service. former special agent joseph clancy was the head of presidential protection and worked with the agency for 30 years. for the past three years, he led security for comcast. nbc 4's parent company.

your commute could soon be a little quicker. vdot plans to launch a pilot program that would let buses use the shoulder on i-66 inside the beltway during heavy traffic. the program is expected to begin by november. they are working with transit companies to hammer out the rules. we want to know what your tradition is as you root to keep the national playoff hopes alive. i'm wearing red. aaron has the beard. take a look at what this guy is

15 before the hour. we're waiting to find out who won this year's nobel prize in medicine. the announcement will be made in stockholm in about an hour. 263 scientists were nominated for this year's prize. as soon as it's announced, we'll let you know on "news4 today." parents of an american held captive by isis militants are pleading for their son's release. in a new video, isis threatens to behead peter kassig. he was taken hostage about a year ago. his parents say he told them in a letter that he is scared to die. he added that if he does, they should take comfort knowing he went out helping those in need. it's now 4:45. michael phelps is taking a break from swimming to enter rehabilitation. the decision comes after he was charged with dui when baltimore police pulled him over for

speeding and swerving last week. the gold medal olympian tweeted he'll enter a treatment facility adding swimming is a major part of my life but i need to focus attention on me as an individual and do the necessary work to learn from this experience and make better decisions in the future. right now d.c. police are investigating a district officer and the u.s. marshal who shot and killed a man. they brought a warrant to arrest a man in his apartment this weekend. when they showed up, he brought out a gun and he wouldn't put it down and officers shot him. we learned identity of an 18 year old who police say stabbed his man to death. they say this happened saturday night in a home they shared in gaithersburg. police believe the two were fighting. no charges have been filed. a 17 year old is in critical condition this morning after falling off a moving car.

police say saturday night the teen jumped on a co-worker's car in a parking lot of a chick-fil-a. he hit his head and now has life threatening injuries. police say the driver knew the teen was on the car but is not being charged right now. it was a close call for a pair of swimmers out in ocean city this weekend. according to "the daily times of salisbury" a 12-year-old boy and a man had to be rescued saturday afternoon. about 1:00 in the afternoon they received a call of two swimmers that could not get back to shore. the two were pulled out of the water and the man was rushed to the hospital. 4:47. today we expect tech giant hewlett packard to announce it will split into two companies. one company will sell hp computers and printers. the secon would focus on technology services like data storage and software. there is less demand for hp computers as smartphones become more popular. that's led to more than 30,000 layoffs at hewlett packard.

family and friends of a missouri teen are demanding the arrest of a police officer who shot and killed him. 18-year-old michael brown was unarmed when ferguson police officer darren wilson shot him several times. it has been 58 days and no arrests. community activists, clergy and the brown family's lawyer expressed anger and frustration yesterday. they're calling for an immediate arrest. >> we should get what we asked for from the very beginning which is justice. >> a grand jury is currently investigating the case. they have until january to decide whether the officer should be charged. this morning two people are hurt following a train derailment that forced families from their homes in northeast louisiana. a southern pacific train hit a truck that was stuck on the tracks. emergency crews evacuated the neighborhood for about two hours. the trains conductor and engineer were hurt. they are expected to be okay. the driver of that truck jumped out of the way when he saw the train coming. sitting onboard a flight is

the last place you would expect to be involved in a fender-bender. that's exactly what happened last night at jfk airport in new york. a delta connection plane was parked waiting to approach the gate when it was hit by a jordanian flight. the royal jordanian nose of the plane hit the tail of the smaller delta connector. nobody was hurt there. passengers on both planes eventually got to their gates. the new ship will begin combing the ocean floor for malaysian airline's flight. it's been outfitted with sonar, cameras and jet fuel sensors. they will spend a year looking for the plane that disappeared without a trace on march 8th. they'll focus on a 23,000 mile patch of the indian ocean off the australian coast. developing now, there is a search under way -- >> to find two missing american

airmen. a huge typhoon swept four airmen into the ocean this weekend. one died. right now another is recovering. on the mainland people in tokyo are bracing for the storm as it heads their way. it could cause a lot of damage there. once it passes it is expected to peter out in the pacific ocean. coming up on 4:51 on this monday morning. turn to tom kierein keeping an eye on the chilly morning that we've been having all over the region. >> got down to the 30s yesterday morning. most of the area for the first time this year. even some frost reported in the shenandoah valley. it's chilly but not that cold as it was yesterday. we were down near freezing. it's in the upper 30s. some of the coldest spots right now in warrenton at 38. closer to washington around 40 degrees. that's a chill in the air in montgomery county. low 40s much of fairfax county.

it's in the mid 40s in prince george's county and in the low 50s around the bay. 30s most of the shenandoah valley and points west. winchester upper 30s as well. what to wear this morning? yes, a jacket. long sleeves and long pants. you'll need that for the morning for the students waiting for buses especially have them layer up a little bit. then this afternoon you can peel a couple layers off. we'll be comfortable. should be in the low 70s. mild under a partly cloudy sky. beautiful afternoon coming up with low humidity. and there are showers now coming into west virginia out of ohio valley passing well north and west of the metro area for the rest of the day. here's timing on rain beginning to move in to the mountains and getting closer to washington. that's going to be not until perhaps this evening. this is as of around mid afternoon. those showers will be rolling into the mountains maybe western maryland by around 5:00 this afternoon and then closer to the shenandoah valley around 6:00 or
