if a traveler shows signs of being ill, "the traveler would be isolated from the traveling public while the cdc and local officials investigate." since we brought you breaking news last night, the scene has been cleared. the single-car crash happened on southbound interstate 95 near route 198 in laurel. state police tell us one child was taken by helicopter with life-threatening injuries. one adult was hurt. today we could find out when a former day care worker will stand trial for alleged child abuse in virginia. prosecutors say kiera springs helped assault three toddlers in woodbridge. sprigg on the right and another woman sara jordan. there are the photos. they covered children's mouths with kepts. jordan's trial is expected to begin next month. 4:31.

the new leader of the secret service will be on capitol hill today. joseph clasp will be briefed by the senate judiciary committee about recent security incidents. he was sworn in yesterday at the interim director. clancy spent 30 years with the secret service. julia pearson resigned under pressure last week. today voters will get help deciding on who they will get to choose to be the next senator. the candidates will square off in a live debate here on nbc4. "meet the press" moderator chuck todd will host the debate between mark warner and republican challenger ed gillespie. the debate starts at 7:00. that means a 30-minute edition of "news4 at 6:00" followed by "nbc nightly news" airing a half hour early. this coming just as a new poll shows the race tightening between anthony brown and republican larry hogan.

"the washington post" university of maryland poll shows brown with a nine-point lead over hogan. brown led by 14 points in the cbs poll last month. 11% of the voters say they are undecided. >> a will the of big elections to be looking out for. and we are talking about the forecast. a little warmer and we are talking of rain as well. >> tom kierein is here with your forecast. a few sprinkles have been coming down after midnight and they are quickly moving down across northern virginia and maryland. the areas in light green are in the light range. just sprinkles in northern montgomery county, loudoun county, prince william and faulkier. into ann arundel, all the roads are just damp. there's enough water on the roads to make them a little slick. so watch out as this tracks

police tell us he pulled over a woman and tried to convince her to ride in his car. she said no and the man ran away. he's somewhere out there right now and neighbors say that's troubling. >> i mean, typically it's a safe community so that's why i'm surprised and shocked something like this would happen. >> the incident happened on north quincy street in the ballston area. today a case will be heard whether prisn grow a short beard because of religious beliefs. this involves an arkansas inmate. prison guards there refused to allow beards in prison except for medical reasons. it's a matter of security because prisoners can hide banned items in their beards. 18 other states back that argument. same sex couples can legally marry in five more states including virginia. the supreme court refused to hear appeals from the states, so with that utah, oklahoma, wisconsin, virginia and indiana

began issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples. the rest of the counties in the states are waiting for guidance from the circuit court on when to do so. soon they will be allowing to marry in six other states including west virginia. when all is said and done, 30 states and the district of columbia will recognize same sex may remember. >> i, erica turner, take you -- >> this comes as a couple in centreville exchanged their vows outside the arlington courthouse soon after the ruling went into effect. they became one of the first virginia couples to marry under the new law. we found an alexandria couple who plans to get married in the district but now they are making last-minute changes. >> it is really important to get married here in northern virginia. we'll have to change the venue, so we'll be looking at a couple new sites on the virginia side here in alexandria along the riverfront. >> the couple rushed to the

the team now is in a deep hole in their division after a loss to the seattle seahawks. it was a close game because the referees took three seattle touchdowns away for penalties. the linebacker recently left the game with an injury but should be able to play on sunday. i really want -- i really am always a redskins fan, but this season has been yucky. >> you can be a fan and acknowledge reality. that's where we are. >> that's true. new developments in the battle against isis. two prominent republicans support the president's air strikes but this morning they say he's not doing something to make the battle impossible to win. and a little bit of a damp start out there for some. you might need an umbrella on the way to work. tom is back to tell you whether you need it top way home at 4:41.

in fairfax county we had to cut a lot of waste. we consolidated offices. started sharing printers. we can walk a few feet. replaced computers, but kept the monitors. they still work fine. we even discovered that the phone company overcharged us by three million dollars! i approve this message because congress doesn't need another right winger. they need someone who can balance a budget. oh, and we definitely didn't need so many government studies.

and mohammad cane was arrested before boarding a plane to turkey. court documents said he left a letter to his parents saying he was going to sneak into isis and join them. aretha franklin and mark wahlberg are expected to be among the guests at one event. tickets to the event cost $25,000. the president will also make the fund-raising rounds during an event in connecticut before ending his day at the white house. starting tonight we could see a difference in the protests in ferguson, missouri. a federal judge ruled that police cannot make protesters move if they are demonstrating peacefully. for months now officers have forced protesters to walk around while they protest or faced arrest. the judge said that violates the protesters' first amendment rights. catholic university must decide whether students can host a program about gay rights. college democrats plan to show

the story of gay politician harvey milk but the school canceled the event calling on officials to let the show go on. the catholic university says the film night is being postponed not canceled until the school can determine the intent of the program. it is now 4:48. things are much calmer this morning after a close call for firefighters in montgomery county. check out the scene here from chopper 4. a ladder truck out of service after catching fire in silver spring. the truck was headed to a fire when a mechanical problem caused it to fill up with smoke yesterday. crews quickly put the fire out but there's heavy damage. the department says it will bring in another truck from the reserve unit. as a 9-year-old shooting victim fights for his life, d.c. police are looking for the shooter. friday night a stray bullet struck the child in the head at the mayfair mansions complex in northeast washington. it was right by a playground.

his injury was so bad that a police officer drove him to the hospital rather than waiting for the ambulance. news4 spoke to the boy's sister who did not want to appear on camera. >> i just would like the community to keep praying for my little brother. and, you know, at some point it all needs to end. >> two adults were also hurt in the shooting. while police did find weapons near the scene, they still have no suspects in custody. if you live in virginia and you want to vote next month, you're running out of time to register. the deadline is october 14th, exactly one week from today. you'll have some help this week in arlington. the voter registration office is adding hours and locations to help you in the days leading up to the deadline. in our changing minds campaign, we are hearing from the grandmother of two missing toddlers in montgomery county. the children's mother suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. lindsey huggle wants to find her

yesterday. 9:07 our time. 6:07 in san francisco. by then, still beautiful weather for baseball. the low 70s and partly cloudy for the rest of the game with temperatures dropping back into the 60s through the game. good baseball weather. here we've had morning sprinkles passing on through. now most of them are exiting virginia. just a few lingering sprinkles in montgomery and prince george's and ann arundel tracking off to the north and east and quickly pulling away. as the morning goes on, things will dry a bit. here's how the skies will be looking for the rest of the day. by noontime, partly sunny. during the afternoon, partly sunny. by mid-afternoon, showers showing up out of the mountains to be tracking off to the north and east. by later in the afternoon, moving into the panhandle of west virginia. shenandoah valley by 6:00 p.m. after that, between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., the showers creep closer to washington. and then after that, around midnight or so we'll have a few showers rolling on through. and then ending by dawn tomorrow. highs today before then, beautiful in the upper 70s. mostly cloudy, just breaks in

p.m. at oxon hill high school. rushernl. baker is hosting it today. there will be a special ceremony to remember james brady, the former white house press secretary passed away in august. he was shot during the assassination attempt on president ronald reagan back in 1981. the museum will host a memorial at 10:00 friday morning. vice president joe biden is expected to speak at the service. new numbers from montgomery county schools say more latino students are in the schools there according to "the washington post." 30 years ago latino students made up just 5.2% of students. today they make up nearly 30%. the numbers are also rising for asian and black students in the county. maryland live casino's new competition is hurting their profits. new numbers show the horseshoe in baltimore made $22 million in september while maryland live made more than double that.
