at least one more game in d.c. but first, many of you will see a little rain on your way to work. we'll check in with tom kierein now with a look at your forecast. good morning, tom. the rain has been passing through here over the last couple of hours and is now just exiting the metro area. leaving in its wake the damp pavement. watch out for that, the roads are rather damp with the rain ending. it will take a while for the roads to dry out this morning, that includes 66, route 7 in fairfax virginia and 95 down to fredericksburg. and around the beltway, 270 and 95 north toward baltimore. 50 east to annapolis, the roads are damp this morning even though the rain has ended. temperatures right now are hovering near 60 degrees. upper 50s for prince george's county and montgomery county. near 60n fairfax county. the rest of northern virginia now in the upper 50s. what to wear today? it's a cool morning. you'll definitely need long sleeves and pants and have the umbrella with you with an additional sprinkle the next

hour or two. but the chances are much lower now. the next weather and traffic is on the 1s at 6:11. right now a water main break uld cause problems for your commute happening on route 1 near montgomery road and beltsville. megan mcgrath is there with what is happening right now. megan? >> reporter: well, we have a water main break here. take a look at all that is going on here. this is taking up the entire right-hand lane. [ inaudible ] sorry about that. we are having a hard time hearing megan's mike, but we are talking southbound right there at montgomery road with one southbound lane closed. the northbound lanes are open. you are looking at chopper 4

over the situation in howard county with a tree down. a huge tree across the road. this is southbound scaggsville closed completely from 108 to hall shop road. your alternate is route 32 this morning. a wider look at things, we are looking good. the slowest spot is right here with and arrow on d.c. 295 passing 50. a little bit slow and usually is this time of the day. prince george's county looking good here. then 95 out of stafford, you're a little slow. probably until triangle opens back up. then you get a little slow again through dale city. pretty typical this time of the day. i'm back with a live look at 270 again looking pretty good in the next couple of minutes. 6:02 is the time. more states are likely to recognize same sex marriage as cases make their way through the federal court system. legal experts tell the richmond times dispatch it's unlikely the supreme court will later accept a rule that bans gay marriage being unconstitutional.

in the justices want to do that, they have to hear the five cases before them. this morning same sex couples can legally marry in virginia, utah, oklahoma, wisconsin and indiana. the same ruling will allow gay and lesbian couples marry in six other states including west virginia. when all is said and done, 30 states and the district of columbia will recognize same sex marriage. we could find out the trial date for a former day care worker accused of abusing toddlers in virginia. karen spriggs is the latest here on the right and another woman sarah jordan stomped on children's bare tors and covered their mouths with blankets. the trial will start next month. 6:03 is the time now. the u.s. is stepping up its effort to fight ebola. the government is considering tough anything the screaming process at major airports including dulles. that could mean cdc members will

it is possible doctors get worn down as the day goes on to make them more likely to give in to a patient's request for medication, even if it is not helpful. apparently the bikini could be to blame for the whopping increase in skin cancer. researches at nyu analyzed several factors over the last 100 years. according to the national cancer institute, between the 1930s to 1960s, when bikinis went from fully covering your beside i do to just partial. cancer shot up 300% in men and 400% in women. the skin cancer rate is still rising. while we now know that you should use sunscreen all the time, people like to be in the sun. >> since 2000 the number of people diagnosed is 2% a year. it is an interesting tradeoff. you put on the sexy bikini or cover-up and don't get skin cancer. >> right. >> well, the rain is moving out of the area this morning.

>> that's right. but you may want to grab a jacket. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell is being sent to the metro station with the storm team 4 by 4 and no jacket. what do you say, chuck? >> that's right. no jacket required today, but i do have a little extra layer of warmth with my nats hat here just in case. a big win last night. as a result, the playoff beard lives. at least one more day. we'll hope the nats can sweep the rest of the games to move on to the next round. it's a lot milder outside this morning than it was yesterday. temperatures now are in the upper 50s to lower 60s compared to the 40s yesterday morning. we saw sprinkles overnight last night into early this morning. those are gone now, but take the umbrella with you with another chance for rain coming in later this afternoon and into this evening. temperatures as i mentioned are milder this morning. it will be another mild afternoon. temperatures will be in the 60s late this morning and then up into the mid to upper 70s by later this afternoon.

a new poll shows that mark warner has a strong lead over ed gillespie. 51% favor warner and 39% for gillespie. gillespie is showing strong among republicans, men and whites. health care and the economy are some of the top issues they are looking for. you'll hear more on those issues tonight on nbc4 with a debate between warner and gillespie you can watch live at 7:00 p.m. 6:16 is the time. now to a developing story, two republican senators are behind a new op-ed in today's wall street journal to criticize president obama's strategy on isis in syria. john mccain and lindsey graham

say they will not destroy the terrorist group because, quote, the administration still has no effective policy to remove bashar assad from power and end the conflict in syria. they insist he must be removed from power to insure success. a 19-year-old from chicago in jail for allegedly attempting to travel overseas to join isis. mohommad cane was arrested just before boarding a plane to you are the chi. he appeared in court yesterday and left a letter for his parents with a letter showing his plan to sneak into liberia to join isis. the woman says the violence needs to end. her 9-year-old brother was hit by a stray bullet and he's in grave condition. d.c. police need your help to find the shooter. the shooting happened friday at the mayfair mansions complex in northeast washington. it was right by a playground. the boy was hit in the head. his injury was so bad that officers drove him to the

hospital rather that waited for an ambulance. news4 spoke to the boy's sister who did not want to appear on camera. >> i just want the community to keep praying for my little brother. and, you know, at some point it all needs to end. >> two adults were also hurt in the shooting. police did find weapons near the scene but no arrests have been made. and this is not something you see every day. a fire truck caught fire in silver spring. that is a fire truck from chopper 4 there at the scene. the truck was responding to a call when a mechanical problem caused it to fill with smoke yesterday. the firefighters put out the flames. the damage was so bad that the fire truck is now out of service. the department says it will bring in another truck from its reserve unit. before today protesters in ferguson, missouri, could not simply sit in one place. police said they had to move while they demonstrated or face arrest. newspapers there called it the five-second rule. however, the practice is changing because a federal judge

said as long as the protesters are peaceful that rule violates protesters' first amendment rights. new york city canceling a project to up stall thousands of transmitters in pay phone booths to track your movements. the private company already up stalled 500 of the beacons in phone booths. they pick up cell phone signals and could have been used to send advertisements straight to your phone. the city scrapped the project and crews are now removing the beacons from the phones. all right. time now to look at the forecast we have been talking about. a little wet start to our day, but it looks like the rain is moving out. >> let's go to storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein now. tom? >> and the chilly weather is moving out as well. we have a mild pattern that's going to be commencing. a lot of clouds around later. the high resolution satellite imagery is showing quite a bit of cloudiness passing through virginia and maryland this morning, but we'll get breaks in the clouds with the day progressing. over the last three hours, we have had the rain pass through.

as we look at the radar here, just one more lingering sprinkle there right on the prince george's and ann arundel county line. elsewhere, just damp pavement from the overnight showers. it will take a while for the pavement to dry out here over the next few hours. so watch out for that this morning. right now it's rather cool in the upper 50s. not as chilly as the last few mornings. the upper 50s nor prince george's, fairfax, montgomery county. and right near alexandria through mount vernon and burke, virginia, the upper 50s. much of loudoun county, prince william, falkier in the upper 50s. watch out for damp roads for much of the morning commute in the low 60s. then the afternoon commute, we'll have dry roads. a partly sunny sky with temperatures nicely climbing into the upper 70s by later this afternoon. then the rain returns between 8:00 and midnight with showers coming through in the 60s. this time tomorrow morning in the mid-50s. a beautiful day tomorrow with a mild trend continuing with highs

twitter @first4traffic. melissa, thank you. 6:22 right now. we have a correction to make. earlier we reported the prince george's county legislative listening session is tonight. it is not tonight. it's actually happening on thursday. now to new fallout from the veterans affairs backlog scandal. the v.a. is firing four senior executives. the top purchasing leading, the directors of the v.a. hospitals in pennsylvania and georgia, and the regional hospital director in central alabama are all being fired. congress passed a new law making it easier for the agency to fire senior leaders suspected of wrongdoing. >> if you drink coffee so much and feel like it must be in your dna, you might be right. scientists have linked dna to how much you drink coffee. researchers identified six genes to play a role. four reacted to caffeine. the work was released by the journal molecular psychiatry.

how about that? in fact, my mom and i drink about the same of coffee, two to three cups in the morning. caffeine does affect me, too. by the afternoon, forget it. i'm up all night if i drink it. >> i'm with you. a police officer in michigan went out of his way to help a mom and keep her little girl safe. >> take a look at the officer bringing her a car seat. he pulled the woman over when he noticed that her daughter did not have a car seat. the girl's mother said she couldn't afford it. so the officer took them to a nearby walmart and bought it for them. apparently he pulled her over for that same reason and she said her car was stolen. the car seat was taken. and they are not cheap. car seats are expensive. >> clearly he thought the safety of the little girl was paramount and wanted to help somebody at the same time. there are good people out there. a little girl in our area may never look at sushi the same way again. >> at least not unless she's having it with alex ovechkin. >> i was thinking, my mom was --

right now storm team 4 radar is showing most of the rain moving out of the area, but the roads are still wet heading out the door. and if you drive to work in beltsville right now, you may want to avoid route 1 with a big hole in the road because of the water main break. later on this afternoon. temperatures this morning are about 15 degrees warmer now than we were at the same time yesterday morning. so still cool enough for a light jacket, but it will be a mild afternoon with a fair amount of sunshine today. that will put temperatures well back into the mid-70s for most neighborhoods. so plenty warm. our average high is only 71 degrees. we'll be in bonus territory later this afternoon, but i would indeed have your umbrella with you just like i do. and download the storm team 4 weather app as well. melissa mollet downloaded it and she can tell you now about traffic. and i also have six umbrellas on standby in case anyone at the station needs them. actually, i don't have any in my car but should get one. outer loop at maryland 95, the folks are red on the outer loop of the beltway pretty jammed at this point. a wider look at things, we are getting slow here d.c. 295 passing 50. we heard about the crash actually in this area as well. and the top of the beltway is

16 before the hour, we are following the latest on a water main break and the ebola outbreak. >> let's go to richard jordan first. >> we have an unbelievable story out of ann arundel county this morning. one of their school buses was stolen. fortunately, no children on the school bus. here's a photo of a bus similar to the one that was taken. the bus that's missing is bus number 874 that has an elevator ramp on the rear passenger side.

and police say they think it's going to have front-end damage as well because that bus crashed through a gate as it was taken off the lot. they are trying to find that bus and police are looking for the bus. anyone with information is asked to call police. aaron and eun? thank you. 15 before the hour right now. we are staying on top of developments now in the ebola cases here in the u.s. kate snow is live in omaha, nebraska, with the latest on this. kate, good morning to you. >> reporter: aaron, good morning to you. so here in nebraska we have the arrival of the second patient they have treated here. he is a cameraman working freelance for nbc news. he arrived here yesterday and is doing pretty well. we're told that he was able to walk off the plane. we actually saw him walk off the plane. and we are told by doctors he seems to be in the early phases of the ebola virus, so that's promising. his father who happens to also be a doctor says he's going to receive an experimental

medication to battle this disease. in dallas, that patient remains in critical but stable condition. his mother rushed to be with him driving 15 hours through the night arriving there yesterday. his 85-year-old mother saying she just wanted to be close by so that maybe he could hear her voice as he battles and fights the disease in dallas. that's the latest from here. back to you. >> kate snow live in omaha, nebraska, for us. thank you. this morning we're learning about the precautions to keep ebola from spreading across the u.s. public hospitals in new york city are apparently sending actors with mock symptoms into emergency rooms to test how good the triage staff is at identifying possible cases. one of the nation's largest ambulance companies has put together step by step instructions on how to wrap the interior of a rig with plastic sheeting while transporting a patient. and look for more about the fight to keep ebola from spreading here in the u.s. coming up on the "today" show

after "news4 today." today the d.c. council is voting on several bills to further regulate marijuana in the district. they are expected to vote on the bill to allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana as they see fit. also on the docket, voting on whether non-violent marijuana offenders should have their records sealed. in the last two months, d.c. has made several changes to the marijuana laws. for instance n july there was the decriminalization of pot. basically police can no longer arrest you for having an ounce or less. the ticket is there are 25. and in august the council decided to put a plan to legalize marijuana on the november ballot so you have a chance to vote. right now we're learning new information about the water main break to affect your morning commute. this is happening on route 1 near montgomery road in beltsville. we'll go to megan mcgrath. any problem proprogress out there? what are you seeing? >> reporter: we are still seeing the gaping hole in the middle of the road that will be with us

at montgomery road. if you're headed out of prince george's county to the beltway, you'll run into this. the northbound lanes are open at this point this morning. southbound one lane shut down. chopper 4 over maryland 95 at the beltway, you can see all the folks with the headlights coming southbound here into town for us this morning. wider look at things, seeing a lot more red than we were a little while ago. this is when the volume starts to build and is building in all of the normal spots. prince george's county, branch avenue,ennsylvania avenue, both of them running about 40 miles per hour. and then you're pretty slow here indian head highway inbound. 95 my friends in stafford, slow out of stafford opening up in triangle and getting slow again headed over to woodbridge. taking a look at 66, a little slow there out in ma nasa. then southbound scaggsville road is now open. 270 at montgomery village avenue is rolling along as well. 6:53. and today we could find out the trial date for a former day care worker accused of abusing

toddlers in virginia. kiera sprigs is facing charges related to the academy in woodbridge. according to social services, sprigs and sarah jordan stomped on the children's bare toes and covered their mouths with kepts. the trial is expected to start next month. and next month a crahearing will be held on the single car crash that happened on southbound 95 near route 198 in laurel. the state police tell us one child was taken by helicopter with life-threatening injuries. one adult was also hurt. the supreme court's decision not to hear appeals about same sex marriages could lead to more states recognizing them. >> i, erika turner -- >> just hours after the appeal was turned down, couples started
