the ebola patient is now in the hospital but officials say he does not have the virus. thomas duncan is the first person to be die from ebola in the u.s. he traveled to texas from liberia. he complained of fever, stomach pain and fatigue. he is in the hospital. he never came in direct contact with duncan or any of the bodily fluids. the deputy spent time with his family, but they have not shown symptoms of ebola. >> a crowd gathered at a dallas church yesterday for a vigil. texas health officials say his remains will be korea mated. his neighbors in liberia believe he got ebola from a pregnant woman who later died. health screenings will begin next week in the region at five airports that receive 94% of

travelers from africa. cdc will take the temperatures of passengers and look out for symptoms. keep it here for updates on ebola concerns and efforts to contain the virus. we have much more on nbcwashington.com. right now a gaithersburg family is asking for help finding their missing loved one. justin has been missing since tuesday afternoon when he was supposed to go to a cvs. he was last seen wearing a gray backpack. his family is worried about his mental well-being because he does not have his medication. a developing story out of st. louis, missouri. a police officer shoots and kills a teenager and it led to more protests in the streets. the 32-year-old officer was off duty at the time but still in uniform working security detail when he was approached by four

men who started running for him. this started a chase. one of the men fired at the officer and the officer fired back. the 18-year-old was killed. three other men were later arrested. now the family of that teen are saying that he did not have a gun. but police say he did. and he shot at the officer three times. the officer fired back 17 times. shortly after the shooting here a crowd tpwaerd on the streets. they started yelling hands up, don't shoot. that's become the slogan in the area after another teenager, michael brown, was shot and killed about a police officer back in august. the protest related to this latest incident has since broken up. that's the latest from the live desk. the white house is dismissing a report about a prostitution scandal with the secret service. 10 were fired in 2012 after a prostitute came into their hotel in colombia. top white house aides were told

today communities will come together to rally for fair development along the new purple line. neighbors and business owners are celebrating the creation of a purple line community compact. it is a commitment to build new development inclusive of all social and economic groups. the fair development championed the effort in 2010. they were concerned that new construction along the purple line would be too expensive for a lower income family. you may notice new barriers at the jefferson memorial. national park service is starting new repairs there. a big piece of limestone the dropped out of the memorial ceiling back in april. engineers say faulty gutters caused water to get in the roof. it will replace the gutter and

limestone. no word when the repairs will be finished. i can't even believe i'm going to tell you this right now. you have to mark your calendars for two days. one, the national christmas tree lighting. i said christmas. it's october. and, two, when you can sign up for the free tickets to attend this event. the national park service announced the tree will be lit december 4th this year. it's pretty early. tickets will be given through an online lottery. you can enter between october 17th and 20th. there are 3,000 tickets and 14,000 standing room only tickets. there's more information on nbcwashington.com. >> people like to get that early. >> put it on the calendar t. it's a tough ticket to get. no matter what day it is, it's always really, really, really cold. >> great to watch on tv. 4:41 your time. look at weather and traffic on the 1s.

electronic. october 23rd. election day is november 4th. it could lead to big drops in voter turnout. they found that turnout was down 2% in place with tight requirements. the biggest drops were seen with black voters and young voters. 33 states require them to show a voter i.d. at the polls. in virginia you either need to show a current i.d. or one that expires within the year. you can fill out a provisional ballot but show proof of i.d. within three days for the vote to count. the navy is getting a jump start on its 239th birthday celebration. today it will hold a special ceremony on pennsylvania avenue northwest. you are invited to see a performance by the u.s. navy band and a birthday cake reception. the u.s. navy will mark its actual birthday this come canning monday.

welcome back at 4:57. here's a good reminder to always roll up your windows and lock your doors at a gas station. take a look. a purse snatching was caught on camera. the thieves pulled up to the gas station on south dakota avenue in northeast and stole a purse right out of a car. this handled on september 27th. police are offering a $1,000 reward for information. . police are reminding students near the university of maryland to lock your doors after a woman caught a stranger in her home. she found a man peering into her bedroom at the off campus apartment on knox road. the suspect didn't take anything. the university has september an alert to students. 29 schools in virginia are receiving money to develop year-round programs. terry mcauliffe announced $1.6

million in grant. schools with a history of underperforming were more likely to improve faster with a year-round program. manassas park will get money to begin its new program in 2015. the charter school in loudoun will be awarded a grant to begin planning its year-round system. your children in private school might soon use a different mode of transportation to get to class. the idea is to reduce traffic in the morning and during the evening rush hour. according to the "washington post", county officials are in discussions with school officials. so far four schools are okay with this idea. experimental project to slow down traffic in one d.c. neighborhood has literally fallen to pieces. these many plastic traffic circles were installed on 42nd street in northwest last year. the goal was to stop people from running stop signs.
