handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. first at 4:00 today, the latest on the hunt for william bradford bishop. late this morning, the fbi exhumed the body of an unidentified man who in the photo we're showing you here on the left bears a striking resemblance to bishop, scene on the right. detectives say bishop disappeared after he murdered his family with a sledgehammer notice their home in 1976. as the news4 i-team was first to report, the fbi added bishop to its ten most wanted list in april. tisha thompson will have new details about exactly how authorities plan to determine whether the body they dug up today is that of bishop or not. that's coming up in just a few minutes. first at 4:00, a former d.c. police officer has been sentenced to seven years in prison for pimping teenage girls. police arrested linwood barnhill last year after they found two missing girls in his apartment. he admits he videotaped himself having sex with one of the girls

and arranging sexual encounters for two others. the victims ranged in age from 15 to 17 years old. and as part of his sentence, the former officer is required to register as a sex offender. coming up on news4 at 5:00, the attorney for one of the victims says more police officers may be involved. montgomery county police are handing out flyers today hoping it will lead to new clues in their search for a dangerous robbery suspect. a woman was nearly stabbed to death in the parking lot of the forest park apartments along piney branch road in silver spring. the attack happened last week. police say the victim was walking home when a man walked up to her and demanded money. he then knocked her to the ground and stabbed her repeatedly. a good samaritan witnessed the attack and called police. first at 4:00, you're about to see some newly released photos of a skimming device, the same used to steal people's money at some maryland atms. these devices were attached to atms at six sandy spring bank locations, this found in

frederick. it's a card reading mechanism and video camera to capture customers' banking and pin numbers. tuesday, a police officer released images of a man they think is linked to the skimming scheme. they're still looking for him. one of the victims told news4 that $1500 was stolen out of her account. turbulence on wall street for the third day in a row. the dow jones industrial average plunged about 320 points today. energy stocks took the biggest hit. looks like today will be the dow's worst single day loss this year. and that's especially notable, because yesterday was the dow's best single gain day of the year. breaking news about ebola concerns here in the u.s. the texas sheriffs deputy does not have ebola. the result of an ebola test just came in. sergeant michael monic was placed in isolation out of an

abundance of caution. he does not have the virus. >> reporter: officials are looking for ways to treat the ebola threat. her brother says she needs help to breathe. two doctors who treated her have been geren teened. a medical flight from sierra leone was denied permission to land in morocco and portugal. the plane carried a norwegian doctor who contracted the disease in west africa. the plane continued on to oslo. here in washington, cdc director thomas frieden warned world financial leaders that the ebola outbreak is reminiscent of the global health threat caused by aids. >> this is a fluid and heterogenous epidemic. it's changing quickly. and it's going to be a long plight. >> dr. frieden spoke at the annual meeting of the world bank and international monetary fund, telling members they need to act quickly to stop the spread. and we're tracking every angle

a crews are working to repair a water lane near

military road and northwest. on top of that, one lane on the eastbound side of military road is blocked and we're told repairs probably won't be completed until tomorrow. the d.c. department of transportation says this could be connected to a water main break yesterday, in that same area. the goal is to make a deadly intersection near the university of maryland safer. government and transportation officials took part in a ribbon-cutting this morning to celebrate the installation of a new pedestrian crosswalk signal. it's at the intersection of route 1 and hartwick road in college park and one of several new improvements designed to cut down on the number of deadly pedestrian accidents. three students were hit and killed this year while crossing route 1. >> i cross this every morning. and there's always such a struggle to cross the street, because people keep on turning left. >> in addition to the new signal, the speed limits have been lowered to 25 miles per hour enforced by a new speed camera. and to stop jaywalking, a fence now runs along the median

between knox and hartwick roads, forcing pedestrians to cross at the corner. a developing story in northern virginia. a 29-mile stretch of express toll lanes may open sooner than planned on i-95. the lanes went to i-395 to garrison road in stafford county. they were originally scheduled to open early next year, but construction is ahead of schedule. the project is a public/private partnership, similar to what's in place on the beltway in northern virginia. drivers can use the i-95 express lanes and pay a toll based on congestion or in a carpool lane. david culver is getting a ride on that new road, and his report is coming up on news 4 at 5:00. now to a story you will see first at 4:00. a prince george's county woman arrested for robbery at the store where she works. tiffany latrice reid's store was held up saturday night by a woman who implied she had a gun.

you're watching news4 at 4:00. is a man buried in a rural cemetery in alabama one of this area's most wanted fugitives? >> the fbi exhumed his body today. now they'll see if his dna matches that of william bradford bishop. >> tisha thompson broke the story and has video of what happened. >> pat, in april, the fbi put punish bishop on its ten most wanted list. he vanished after he murdered his mother, wife, three young boys with a short-handled sledgehammer inside their potomac home. we want to warn you, a photo we're about to show may be disturbing to some of our viewers, because today the fbi agents unearthed a vault containing the remains of a man only known as john doe. of he died in 1981, about five years after the bishop murders, as he was hitchhiking along a highway in scotts boro, alabama. police there have spent years trying to identify him and

received a tip in august from a local resident that he looked a lot like bishop. the fbi will take dna samples from john doe to compare to bishop's dna. >> we have known samples of mr. bishop's dna at the fbi laboratory in quantico. my understanding is, the dna came off of a cigarette. during the course of the investigation. >> it takes some time to create dna samples, so we've had some viewers ask us, why can't they just compare the dental records and get an answer right away? we're told they just don't know what they'll find inside that vault. since john doe was hit by a car, it's also possible he could be missing some of those critical teeth to identify him. we've got a lot more on this story. hear from the sister who made the connection between the two men, and whether investigators really think this is their man. tonight on news4 at 5:00 and 6:00. a tisha thompson, news4 i-team. that cigarette being used to check the dna of bishop and john

4:00. there are new developments in the investigation into seventh heaven actor steven collins who is accused of molesting three girls. >> the audio recording that is the focus of the allegations is now released as hal jackson reports, both collins and his estranged wife are now speaking out just as their divorce trial is set to start. >> you made it. >> hi, dad. millions of viewers know steven collins as the dedicated dad and devoted reverend on "seventh heaven." >> i've heard people say they were afraid that if they went back to church, the roof would fall in, but -- >> reporter: now it's not a tv show, but an audio recording that has collins back in the spotlight. tmz released the tape, which was not independently verified by nbc news. tmc says collins can be heard in a 2012 therapy session confessing to molesting three young girls. >> it happened -- >> with a 10-year-old, okay. >> well, no, she was 11.

and then like 12 and 13. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: the actor's estranged wife, faye grant, says two years ago she gave authorities what she called an extremely private recording at their request, and denies releasing the tape to the media. 2012 was the year divorce proceedings began, and in documents filed in court, grant states that more than a decade ago, quote, steven used his celebrity status to engender the trust of the families of the children he molested. less than 48 hours off the recording was made public, collins was dropped from the tv show "scandal" cut from the sequel to the movie "ted," reruns no longer airing on networks. >> there is no question, steven is now branded and is not a product that people want to buy. >> reporter: collins' lawyer who did not respond to requests for comment told us tmz has tried to peddle this to numerous people. in the divorce case she is

you're watching news4 at 4:00. good afternoon. i'm chris lawrence in for jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. there is increasing fear in the united states over ebola. one day after federal officials announced the u.s. will screen passengers at five airports for ebola symptoms, cleaners at lagardia airport walked off the job. they work for a company that cleans airplane cabins and bathrooms. the workers say they come in contact with human waste and they are not given adequate protection. a sheriff's compute deputy got sick yesterday, health officials took every precaution. >> we just learned the deputy does not have ebola. nbc's chris pallone is in dallas with the latest. >> reporter: health officials say they used an abundance of caution in bringing sergeant michael monning to texas presbyterian hospital after he

was sick wednesday. he had been in thomas eric duncan's apartment. >> the deputy who is sick from something is not sick from ebola. and i am not at risk. and no one else is at risk who followed those doctors' protocols in dealing with this family. >> reporter: he delivered a quarantine notice to the family members staying with duncan. those people are part of a group of 48 being checked daily for signs of ebola. they're being watched for 21 days. the incue obama administration for the period for the fatal disease. no one has gotten sick yet. wednesday night, the deputy paused to remember duncan who died after being tested positive for ebola. he was sent home from the hospital despite telling a nurse he had been in liberia. the health department is investigating duncan's care. and it's raised fears others might slip through the cracks. >> the issue that happened in dallas when mr. duncan wasn't

now to the chicago teenager who allegedly wanted to become an american jihadist. 19-year-old mohamed khan is charged with trying to join isis militants in syria. at a detention hearing today, the judge delayed a ruling on bail. khan was arrested in chicago on saturday. he left his parents a letter saying he was traveling to syria, according to investigators. khan's lawyer says the parents were not aware of their son's plans and didn't even see the letter until police found it during a search. several hours from now, we will know the winner of this year's nobel peace prize. the front runner is pope francis, who has traveled the world urging peace and reconciliation. but he could face competition from nsa super leaker edward snowden, who argues that his massive document dump was good for the world. and there's another surprise on the list. russian leader vladimir putin nominated, despite the war in ukraine and the shootdown of malaysian airlines flight 17. maryland governor martin o'malley is reaching out to

millennials. o'malley told cnn that young people realize that connections to each other make all of us better, and that wi-fi is a human right. the democratic governor has been positioning himself for a presidential run in 2016. in june of 1863, union troops moving through northern virginia stopped in the area that is now hunter mill road and barron cameron avenue in reston. trouble came, the fields caught fire, as depicted in this drawing from the library of congress. hundreds of sholders were overcome, many died. this saturday, an historic marker will be unveiled to commemorate the troops' sacrifices. the marker is located along hunter mill road across from the reston zoo. civil war reenact tors will be part of this weekend's unveiling. now here is something special for boat lovers. the 45th united states sailboat show opened today at the city dock in annapolis. organizers say you'll be able to see not only sailboats, but the

you're watching news4 at 4:00. you might be booking more flights out of reagan national airport. there has been a jump in the number of passengers there. this comes after congress relaxed rules for flights at reagan national. but they added resources at reagan national are strained right now. looking to double passenger fees. dulles international is seeing a drop in passengers, despite a $5 billion expansion. apple has put its new larger ipad on hold. for now. the "wall street journal" reports the company is struggling to keep up with demand for the iphone 6 and 6-plus, so it's pushing back production of the new tablet until early next year.

those in the know say apple's new ipad will have a 13-inc high-resolution screen. later this month, apple is still expected to launch the next generation ipad air and possibly some new i macs as well. the family of the women who modeled for aunt jemima say they deserve a cut of profits. they are suing quaker oats which owns the brand. they claim the women were instrumental in creating the recipe and also want a cut of future profits. however, a spokesperson for quaker oats says aunt jemima was never a real person. the company also says no contract exists with the women who modeled for the company. >> a court is going to have to sort that one out. if you bought a red bull energy drink any time in the last decade, you could be entitled to some cash. >> news4 consumer reporter erika gonzales is here to tell us why

shows up everywhere? up next, a startling investigative report. is there a link between synthetic turf and the increasing number of

you're watching news4 at 4:00. well, it's something that thousands of kids are playing on right now. artificial turf is on fields around the country. but there's a growing concern it could be harmful. >> and that concern started with a coach who had two players with

cancer. nbc's stephanie gosk has been investigating this story for months. >> reporter: casey sullivan may have taken an afternoon soccer game like this for granted, if he had never gotten that diagnosis. >> the doctor came in and said in all my years of medical practice, this is the worst x-ray i've ever seen, the worst chest x-ray. >> reporter: hodgkin's lymphoma, stage 4. sullivan was a college student at the sometime, a young, fit, goalkeeper at the soccer team. >> the doctors never had a good answer. >> reporter: years later, sullivan saw university of washington soccer coach, amy griffin, on the local news. two of her goalkeepers had been diagnosed with similar cancers. a terrible coincidence, she thought, until taking one of her sick players for chemotherapy. >> the nurse said don't tell me you guys are goalkeepers. that is so crazy. you are like the fourth goalkeeper i have hooked up this week. >> reporter: her goalie had a theory. >> she said i just have a

feeling it has something to do with those black dots. >> reporter: the black dots are actually shredded car and truck tires, used in turf fields to fill the space between artificial blades of grass. they contain all the same chemicals found in most tires. the international agency for cancer research labels four carcinogens, i'll adding that at low levels of exposure, they are considered safe. on a soccer field, goalkeepers, more than any other player, roll around on the turf every practice. >> you end up ingesting the chrome rubber accidentally as a goalkeeper. it's unavoidable. >> reporter: sullivan reached out to coach griffin and now he's on the list, names the coach continues to gather of soccer players who have developed different types of cancer. 38 all together, 34 of them are goalkeepers. a list is not scientific proof. there is no research directly linking chrome rubber exposure to cancer. >> many of them are blood cancers, but there are others

too. what i would say is that in general, it's very difficult to study the relationship between an environment judge exposure and cancer. >> reporter: no available studies replicategoalkeepers' playing conditions, but many researchers, states and localities defy defend the safety. david sits on the synthetic turf council board. >> there is certainly a preponderance of evidence to this point that says it, in fact, is safe. >> reporter: an nbc news investigation put that assertion to the test. gathering available studies and speaking with pediatricians, scientists and advocacy groups who say more research should be done. >> turf fields come with a number of real risks and a number of real benefits. and every community that's faced with deciding what they want to put in has to weigh in the different risks and benefits for that situation. >> reporter: among the available studies the synthetic turf council points to was one by the epa in 2009.

the agency itself describes the conclusions as limited. nbc news repeatedly requested an interview, but after several e-mails and two phone calls, the epa refused. in a statement, a spokesperson says the use of chrome rubber remains a state and local decision, and more testing needs to be done. if more research needs to be done, why are we allowing our children to play on this surface? >> sure. well, more research can always be done. i mean, the question is whether or not the synthetic turf is safe. we've got 14 studies on our website. this says we can find no negative health effects. >> reporter: pro athletes and school kids alike are playing on more than 5,000 chrome rubber fields around the country. new york city parks and los angeles schools no longer install the surface, citing multiple health concerns. other cities with the turf say it's cheaper and more durable than grass. and provides more outdoor space for kids to play. sullivan wants his girls to play

soccer, but he worries about their exposure to chrome rubber. >> our oldest who is 4 years old, she just started playing soccer. and i wouldn't want her to be a goalkeeper. >> now, amy griffith is the first to tell you, she is a coach, not a scientist. but she says she hopes that you raise awareness on the issue. that will generate the research into artificial turf that a lot of people think is needed. some schools in d.c., northern virginia and montgomery county use the same type of artificial turf. news4's chris gordon is tracking local reaction to that nbc report. >> reporter: good afternoon from richard montgomery high school in rockville, maryland. the first of a half dozen montgomery county public schools to install an artificial playing field filled with chrome rubber. we are getting local reaction to the nbc news investigative report questioning how safe is the artificial turf on your child's sports fields. it is important to note that no

you're watching news4 at 4:00. there was more unrest in missouri overnight following another police-involved shooting, this time in st. louis. an off-duty officer shot and killed a teenager during an alleged confrontation. the police chief says the 18-year-old suspect fired three shots at the officer. the officer fired back, killing him. investigators are now working to determine whether the officer's behavior was appropriate. michael brown's fatal shooting took place in nearby ferguson. a new york city police officer is facing allegations that he stole more than $1,000 from a man he stopped to

question. >> this happened a few weeks ago. but video of the incident has just been released. as ida segal reports, the video raises more questions about the officer's behavior. >> you see this? look. you see this. >> reporter: the man in the sweatshirt is lamar doi, getting slammed up against a fence in brooklyn a few weeks ago as a police officer digs through his pockets. >> give me my money, man. >> reporter: in this cell phone video, it appears as though the officer has taken his money, more than $1300, and doesn't give it back. his attorney, robert marinelli, tells me the police officer robbed his client. >> very vividly depicts what appears to be the police robbing somebody. not arresting them. not somebody who committed a crime or done anything wrong. >> reporter: marinelli says it started when joy was walking through this basketball court with his friends in his coney island neighborhood. one of his friends was allegedly stopped by police and pepper sprayed. marinelli says when joy questioned the officer's actions, this happened.

>> he just stole his money. >> we could go back to kindergarten where stealing is wrong. >> reporter: joy says the officer pepper sprayed him and then walked away. >> get his badge number. >> reporter: in the video, you can see his sister ask for the cop's badge number. she got pepper sprayed too. the officer officers stood and watched. joy was never arrested. his attorney says he works as a construction worker. it was his birthday, and he had all that cash for a night out on the town with his wife. >> i think the police thought probably mr. joy did not get the money honestly and they could get away with this and nobody would ask questions. >> the man is accusing the city officer of robbery, says he doesn't want to sue the city of new york. he simply wants the his money back. the district attorney's office says they are investigating that video. right now at 5:00, he's accused of killing his family and was thought to be on the run for decades. but tonight one of the most wanted men in america may be found. ebola drills.

we found a local hospital training right now for what the cdc says is an epidemic that rivals hiv. plus, a police officer pimping teenage girls. right now as he heads to prison, there are new questions in the case that gave the d.c. police department a bad name. some breaking news right now about the prime suspect in the disappearance of uva student, hannah graham. our affiliate in charlottesville is reporting a new connection between jesse matthew and murdered virginia student morgan harrington. matthew's former co-workers told authorities he was working as a taxi driver the night harrington disappeared in 2009. the cab matthew was driving that night was found on a farm two weeks ago. our affiliate also learned authorities interviewed matthew in 2009 about harrington's disappearance. still gathering details on this, but scott macfarlane will have an update at 5:30. to one of the most infamous murder mysteries in the area.

>> the fbi may be one step closer to finding william bradford bishop. the fbi put bishopen its ten most wanted list earlier this year. he vanished after investigators say he murdered his entire family with a short handled sledgehammer. police say he used the station wagon to take them to north carolina where he set them on fire and abandoned the car in tennessee. the news4's i-team's tisha thompson first reported the break in the case and has details on what happened today. tisha? >> pat and chris, today the fbi said it's received at least 350 tips about bishop since naming him to its ten most wanted list in april. but one tip from alabama has the fbi doing something it's never done before in this case. exhuming the body of a man buried without a name. a warning, we're showing a picture being used in the investigation some might find disturbing.
