we're very concerned that a preliminary positive has been identified in a health care worker. >> stricken with ebola. now at 6:00, questions swirl. did the dallas hospital see the second ebola patient? >> there was a breach in protocol. >> are we ready to face the virus head-on? >> it is possible that other individuals were exposed. >> news 4 at 6:00 starts now. >> right off the top at 6:00, a second case of ebola has been diagnosed here in the united states. the cdc confirmed a texas nurse tested positive for the virus. she contracted it while treating thomas duncan who died of ebola last week.

it's the first known case of ebola being transmitted in the u.s. investigators say it's because of a breach in protocol. jay gray has more. >> reporter: right now they are very confident about their treatment plan and her prognosis. but there are many here concerned that mistakes inside this hospital could mean even more people have been infected with the deadly virus. a member of the medical team that treated thomas eric duncan who is now in isolation. doctors say it's the first known transmission of the deadly virus in the united states. >> we're deeply concerned. >> reporter: a review by the centers for disease control indicates the virus was transmitted because there was a mistake by the team treating duncan before his death. >> but at some point there was a breach in protocol and that breach in protocol resulted in this infection. >> reporter: officials aren't releasing the name of the medical professional who is now a patient.

we do know she's a woman who apparently lived alone in this dallas apartment complex. >> i live right next door to the person who contracted ebola. and, yeah, i mean, i'm freaked out, but i'm not -- i guess i'm not super scared. >> reporter: police and public health workers remain in the neighborhood delivering the same message. >> it's important that while this is, obviously, bad news, it is not news that should bring about panic. >> doctors say tarks peers she only came into contact with one person and that person is being monitored right now. but they also warn the breach in hospital protocol could mean more health care workers could test positive for the disease. >> unfortunately it is possible in the coming days that we will see additional cases of ebola. >> reporter: one reason, the cdc has increased the number of agents an the ground here.

the woman infected had been self-monitoring by checking her temperature twice daily. there are at least 18 other hospital employees following that same procedure right now. that's the latest live here in dallas. jay gray. back to you. >> we know that health officials in texas have come up with a list of about 48 people who had been in contact with duncan. is this person part of that 48? >> reporter: yeah, she is not, nor are the other 18 that we know about, the hospital employees all self-monitoring, they were all considered low risk. that 48 still being monitored and still have a ways to go. they are being checked by hospitals or experts from the cdc on a regular basis daily we're talking about. right now the good news is no one in that group has shown any symptoms. >> jay gray, reporting live in dallas. thank you very much. health workers started screening passengers at jfk

international airport this wctd as they try to prevent the spread of ebola. it's only for patients coming into the u.s. from west africa. they are checking their temperature and asking questions about potential exposure. four other airports will start screening on thursday. we've learned another patient has been quarantined in the boston area. officials say he's exhibiting ebola-like symptoms and recently travelled to liberia. this patient went to the doctor today complaining of a headache and muscle pain. the hospital is just waiting for his test results to come back. one man in our area is feeling ebola's impact like few others can. he's mourning the loss of his older brother who died during the outbreak in liberia. derrick ward picks up team coverage with a look at what's motivating him to return to his former country. >> reporter: maxwell taylor has been following the developments here and abroad with much more than an academic interest. he recently lost an older

brother. his brother recently returned home to liberia. he and maxwell fled their home to escape a raging civil war. he fell ill at church on a friday. >> on saturday they said he was in critical condition. >> on sunday, it got worse. and monday morning, 3:00 a.m., he died from ebola. >> reporter: it hit him particularly hard. he looked up to his brother. >> i took it personal. >> i don't sleep sometimes thinking about it. >> reporter: he's been here five years and it's only recently that his being in liberia has gotten attention. >> when you say liberia, you receive a lot of strange faces. they call me ebola. >> reporter: that stings having lost someone to the disease but

tried to storm a business. police had to arrest at least 17 people. tensions are still high from last week when an on-duty officer shot and killed a black teenager in a st. louis suburb. they're also demanding officials arrest the officer who shot and killed michael brown back in august. storm team 4 is track something rain moving through parts of our area. our meteorologist is keeping an eye on what's happening next. amelia? >> we're going to see isolated showers continue for the next hour or so. this light activity mainly north of washington as it moves off toward the east-northeast. until about 7:00, 8:00 p.m. you may see a few sprinkles. barely enough to wet the ground. by 9:00, mainly dry and not as cold at last night. 64 is the temperature right now. 11:00 p.m., around 60. after midnight tonight, fog starts to form and tomorrow morning for that commute, some fog and drizzle. a temperature of 57 degrees.

hundreds if not thousands of kids will take hay rides this halloween season. but on one of these rides in main, the trailer slammed into a tree and killed someone. investigators say an suv pulling the hay ride lost control as it was going down a hill last night. it smashed into a tree and the impact threw everyone off the trailer. a 17-year-old girl was killed and paramedic s rushed several people to the hospital. police came back to the scene today to reconstruct what happened and so far they do not think alcohol had anything to do with it. for a lot of people, understanding their health insurance can be confusing and difficult. d.c.'s health department kicked off a monthly program today to help people navigate the system. they helped find out what benefits they qualify for and what their options are if they
