harrington. police were able to link matthew to the sexual assault along germantown road. she had gone to the store, the giant food store and was walking home when she was viciously and violently attacked. nine years later today, matthew has now been indicted, three counts as mentioned, felony counts, attempted murder, abduction with intent to defile and sexual assault. the commonwealth's attorney says the victim is, in fact, cooperating in this case. and she is very grateful. >> the victim is grate of to the lead detective who stayed in touch with her regularly over the course of nine years, and promised her he would never give up and he never did. and i wouldn't expect less from him. and so i think it's fair to say that she is grateful that the case will go forward to whatever resolution comes to. >> reporter: the commonwealth's attorney says he is going to seek a bench warrant on thursday

to have jesse matthew brought here to fairfax county for his first appearance. reporting live there fairfax, darcy spencer, news4. >> team coverage continues in charlottesville tonight, where hannah graham's parents are waiting to learn if the body discovered outside town this weekend is that of their daughter. david culver is live outside albemarle police headquarters tonight. david? >> reporter: jim, the community right here in charlottesville from the uva student to the locals once again finds itself in this cloud of uncertainty. not knowing. and it's for that reason that many here are desperate to learn whether or not the discovery made this past weekend is connected to hannah graham. police on scene telling me today old lynchburg road won't likely reopen the rest of the week. a half mile beyond this barricade, the site where crews found a body. today they're still investigating that wooded area. as the medical examiner works to determine the identity of the remains and a possible cause of death. to oh some, this area located near the scenic walnut creek

park may seem isolated, remote shall even. we have learned it shares a close connection to jesse matthew, accused of abducting hannah graham. >> neighbors tell me this home behind me is where jesse matthew and his mom lived until five years ago. they have since moved. what's significant about this location is we're just a few miles up the road from where the remains were found. >> me and my friends would actually just ride our bikes -- i guess it's like four miles down there. >> reporter: neighbor dmeet rouse walker grew up here too. he says he knew him through school, making the allegations in saturday's discovery all the more disturbing. >> to hear somebody did something and left someone out in that area or whatever where we used to play as kids is wild. >> i'm from albemarle county so i've lived here my whole life. i've been out at walnut creek park a million times. you know, picnics and trips and things. and i can't believe it.

it's just really creepy. >> reporter: lauren johnson tells me she worked with matthew at the hospital. since the disappearanceses, she and dmeetous have changed their habits. >> before, i never locked my doors. i have lived down here for 25 years. never locked the door. they stay locked most of the time now. >> reporter: matthew is still behind bars tonight. he is actually being held at the albemarle county regional jail, not far from where we are. he is expected to be back in court here in charlottesville in december, first for reckless driving charges and then for the more significant abduction charge. meantime, on the grounds of the university of virginia, students there are making safety changes, in the wake of hannah's disappearance. i'm going to show what those are when we join you again, all new at 6:00. live in charlottesville, i'm david culver, news4. it was an attack in one of the most popular walking and shopping neighborhoods of our city. a woman raped. yesterday morning on prospect street in georgetown, a block up

from busy m street. news4's pat collins is live near that scene. pat. >> reporter: wendy, a rape in georgetown. a sexual assault alert from the university. and a suspect still at large. the crime is rape. the scene, a home in the 3300 block of prospect street. the victim described officially only as an adult woman. this is a block that houses many georgetown students. and georgetown university has sent out an alert informing the students about this sexual assault. >> and i think it's horrible. unfortunately, things like this happen all of the time. but i appreciate the fact that the community -- the school notified me of this happening. >> reporter: so far, this is what we know. it happened sunday at 6:00.

6:00 in the morning. inside a home in the 3300 block of prospect street. police described the suspect as a clean-shaven man wearing a black leather jacket. investigators looking into the possibility he entered the home through an open door. in its alert, georgetown university reminding students to always keep their doors and windows locked, even when you're in the residence. >> we're in a city, that kind of stuff happens. and it's scary. and i think we have to learn from it. >> reporter: what are you doing differently now. >> not walking around alone. i always have my phone. i carry around a whistle. >> reporter: now police are working the case, but so far no suspect, no arrest. live in georgetown, pat collins, news4. >> pat, thank you. a gas station clerk is recovering tonight after being shot in oldtown alexandria. a gun man walked into the liberty gas station around 11:30

last night and demanded cash. this surveillance video shows the clerk opening the register, then putting his hands up as the robber grabs the money. workers tell news4 the gunman had trouble getting out of the score and thought the clerk had locked him in. that's when he shot the clerk in the hip. we spoke with the owner of the gas station, and we'll hear what he told police. that's coming up in our next half hour. a story for you first on 4:00. that huge concert to honor our veterans to lead to travel headaches for you today. metro said it will be shutting down an entire subway heline. the concert for valor is next month on the national mall. it is free and could attract up to 800,000 people. to keep those crowds under control, metro says it will shut down the blue line all day. transportation reporter adam tuss is live on the national mall to explain why and how this is going to work. >> reporter: yeah, wendy. this one might be sneaking up on folks down here on the national mall. we're just three weeks away from the concert for valor, and now,

yes, a scramble to get ready. >> it's breaking news. >> reporter: the breaking news for joel shrak is that in about three weeks, this place could be crawling with 400 to 800,000 people. the concert for valor, free on veterans day, november 11th, will feature acts like bruce springsteen, carrie underwood, metallic, jamie foxx and even tom hanks will be here. joel is used to big crowds on the mall. >> it can be a little unnerving, but my office is just a block away so i can just wait it out there. >> reporter: but if the anticipated crowd materializes, joe could be waiting a long time. this could be two to three times larger than the 4th of july. it's scheduled to run from 7:00 to 10:00 at night and has metro scrambling to find ways to handle the crowd. news4 has learned such a large crowd expected, that blue line service is not going to run that day. >> so what we're going to do on

veterans day is we're going to replace the blue line with yellow line service. trains coming out of franconia springfield will depart as yellow line trains and run over the bridge between franconia, springfield and green belt. >> reporter: metro says that will free up more capacity and more trains to move everybody. anybody loolg king to get to arlington cemetery will have to take a special shuttle train that will run between reagan national airport and the cemetery. you will not be able to travel between roslyn and the cemetery on the blue line. a lot of details to figure out here. hbo and starbucks are hosting this event. next hour at 6:00, wait until you hear wiabout the bill that metro is writing up for them. reporting live on the national mall, adam tuss, news4. >> thanks, adam. early voting under way across parts of the country. president obama took advantage today, casting a ballot in his home state of illinois. the president called early voting a wonderful opportunity, urging others to do just the same. he and other democrats are encouraging people to vote

early, since many typically democratic voters often skip voting in midterm elections. early voting also kicked off today in d.c. with residents casting ballots for mayor and other elected positions and whether to legalize pot. right now the only early voting site is 1 judiciary square. eight additional sites will be opening this saturday. the three major candidates for mayor stopped by the site today. tom sherwood will have more coming up on news4 at 6:00. we have some rain moving in this week and it could be hanging around for a while. >> get ready. chief meteorologist doug kammerer is tracking the radar now. >> we're not talking about rain, but a nuisance rain. tonight we already have rain coming in across portions of our area back towards winchester, martinsburg. the rest dry for now. but we will see rain later this evening. here's the first little area of rain back toward the west that

have been infected. 21 days is the incubation period for ebola. no symptoms within that time means no infection. so all those people isolated and placed on cdc watch lists can go back to normal lives now. health officials say this is a reminder the virus can only be contracted through close contact with bodily fluids. >> nobody who everybody was worried about has gotten sick. really reinforces what we know. should give people an understanding that what we have been saying, that it requires that kind of contact, is the way it's -- is, in fact, playing out. >> so a lot of people have been cleared, but there are still more than 70 health care workers who had contact with duncan who are still under close watch in the dallas area. those two texas nurses diagnosed with ebola are still being isolated and treated in hospitals, one in atlanta and the other here in bethesda. you can learn more on our

dreary and a little bit on the raw side. but we're not talking about a storm system that's just going to dump rain on us. that is for the folks just to the north of up around the boston area. that's why the storm is going to hit hard. right now, 68 degrees, winds out of the south at 13 miles per hour. those winds have been gusting over 20 throughout the afternoon in parts of the area. giving us a little bit of a chill after this morning. very cold numbers. but 6 8 not too bad. average this time of year. storm team 4 radar showing rain, not around the i-95 corridor and the commute tonight should be no problem at all. right through 7:00. but then we're going to watch showers moving in right now back towards the west around i-81. back around winchester, frederick county, virginia, martinsbu martinsburg, panhandle, whartonville. you continue to see rain move toward the i-81 corridor, across the blue ridge and eventually towards the rest of the area overnight tonight. this is all part of the storm system back toward the west that is going to be moving our way.

now that area of low pressure will bring us some shower activity tonight around 10:00, 11:00, so get ready, make sure you have the umbrella handy, just in case. maybe the windshield wipers going if you're out driving around, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00. tomorrow morning, the area of low pressure continues to move in and then another band moves in tomorrow afternoon. tomorrow at 2:00, still dealing with sunshine and mixture of clouds. tomorrow evening, that's when we see shower activity continuing to move in. that shower activity coming as an area of low pressure moves down around our region tomorrow, and then intensifies off the coast. this happens in our area every so often in the month of october, early november. we call them nor'easters. this will be a big-time nor'easter for areas like new york, up towards the boston region. for us, we're going to see showers and wind, but this is not going to be a big event. veronica johnson in the storm center now, and vj, this is something that could be one of those events we talk about for a couple days. this one, however, not bringing a lot toward our area. >> not at all. in fact, we have taken a look

here and put together the rainfall totals for you. this is some of the latest data coming in. in fact, when you combine tuesday's and wednesday's rain together, it is not going to be a big event for us at all. there it is. anywhere shaded in blue, about a half inch of rain. that's areas around manassas right into d.c. there could be some 1" amounts around areasf st. mary's, calvert county, pax river, but for the most part, a tenth to half inch of rain and high impact areas, the easterly wind off the bay, the potomac as water piles in. and at times of high tide. so we might see minor flooding there. for the most part, not a lot of rain coming with this. >> yeah, one thing we will get, though, is periods of rain, not that you have any, but turning windy and cool. when we talk about turning windy and cool, our numbers over the next couple days down from the 60s. tomorrow, 67. temperatures around 64 in gaithersburg. we'll see that shower activity move in late tomorrow evening. so your impact forecast on your

tuesday is going to be on the low side. clouds on the increase with showers late. but that impact on wednesday, that will go up to moderate for sure as we're not only expecting shower activity but look at the numbers. high of only 58 on wednesday. it will be very similar to yesterday. remember how chilly yesterday was with the wind? but you add the clouds and shower activity, 80% chance of showers, nothing too heavy, but again, showers on wednesday. 60 degrees on thursday. still rather windy. and 66 on friday. so it's going to be a rather windy period. and i think the breezy conditions last right towards the weekend. saturday and sunday, as the storm system meanders across parts of the northeast. once again, not a huge deal for us, but it will have an impact on your weather tomorrow night through the day thursday and even into friday. guys? >> all right. thanks, doug. a woman from prince george's county is about to become a millionaire. d.c. lotto officials say she is likely the winner of a $1 million prize from mega millions. they say she called with a ticket that matched all the

welcome back to news4 at 5:00. i'm dianna russini. victory monday here at redskins park. this afternoon, jay gruden named third string quarterback colt mccoy the new starting quarterback when they face the dallas cowboys on monday night. he'll start unless robert griffin iii gets cleared medically this wednesday. now colt helped lead the redskins to their second victory yesterday. and according to chris cooley, he thinks this could be the start of something real good for washington. >> they have been in games. they're in the philly game, in the arizona game. they're just not finishing the fourth quarter. they are able to come up with a huge driving finish. that's what i love. >> reporter: you mentioned the fourth quarter. and obviously, in the fourth quarter, colt mccoy getting his opportunity and seizing the moment. what did you like and what did you see from colt yesterday?

>> what i liked about colt, he was really efficient with the football. when he threw it, he made some completions, he was accurate. he seemed smart with the ball most of the game. and only one incompletion the entire time he played. he was very smart with the ball. and led the team on a drive in a critical situation. that i absolutely love. >> the dallas cowboys one of the hottest teams in the nfl now. do you think colt is deserving to be the starting quarterback now? >> he is the starting quarterback and doesn't matter how he got there. i think at this point we care more about can colt play efficiently against the dallas cowboys. colt just has to be smart with the football. he has pierre garcon, desean jackson, jordan reed, get the ball in your play maker. that's an easy job for a quarterback. >> chris, what would happen if colt mccoy could lead this team to a win against the dallas cowboys? how much does this change the season? >> i think it changes the season because it gives this team an opportunity to continue to play to make the playoffs. you look at two games after that, you could potentially win. but it gives you a chance. you win a game in dallas, you

right now, a man wanted for murdering a woman in virginia is found dead. and news4 spoke to the witness who saw the crime in progress. and she yelled out to me, you know, "call the cops. he has a knife and a gun." >> the accused leader of the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi heads to court. pete williams breaks down the new charges. and who really gets to light up under d.c.'s new marijuana laws? we'll learn why most people would still find themselves in a lot of trouble if they decide to take a toke. tonight, a witness to a murder who rushed to help the victim is talking about that terrible attack. >> this after police find the short's body in a field outside

principle william elementary. officials believe he killed himself. julie carey talked with the only witness to this murder. >> balloons and flowers mark the townhouse where police say jessica wilson, a mother of two, was shot to death by her boyfriend early sunday. the neighbor was ready to leave on an early business flight when he noticed wilson and her boyfriend, edward hale, at first just talking inside a car in the driveway. then he saw hale choking her. >> so i came out a little bit off my porch and said, you know, what's going on? and he let her go once he heard my voice, and she yelled out to me, you know, "call the cops. he has a knife and he has a gun." >> reporter: sharp says he opened his front door and told his son to call 911. when he turned around, things were even worse. >> when i noticed he had the gun in his hand, he cocked it. and when he cocked it, she was walking backwards and slipped and fell on the ground.

and she said, you know -- he pointed the weapon at her while she was on the ground and said don't do this and he shot her. >> reporter: he says he immediately ducked into the house and yelled to his family to get down. he heard two more shots fired and then listened as the suspect is drove away. sharp went to the victim and did cpr until emergency crews arrived. his wife and son at his side urging him on. >> i was talking to jessica, telling her that she needed to live. she needed to live for her children. and that i was here and that i was helping her. she needed to live. and that -- and that they were on their way. >> reporter: jessica wilson died at the hospital. sharp cancelled his business trip, the family fearful hale could come looking for them. but early this morning, the car hale fled in was spotted at a nearby elementary school. hale's body was found on the baseball field. police believe he shot himself.

coming up on news4 at 6:00, how police and school officials worked together to keep children safe during the search. in bristow, virginia, julie careyy, news4. three people charged in connection with a shooting at a mcdonald's near the university of maryland. a group of people were being disruptive and refused to leave when a security guard tried to intervene. at some point, they say one of them fought with the guard. the guard wound up firing his gun. one woman was hit in the arm. the three men ran off. this happened early sunday morning at the restaurant across the street from that campus. prosecutors are asking a judge to postpone the next court appearance for a man at the center of a d.c. political corruption scandal. jeffrey thompson pleaded guilty back in march to funneling illegal campaign contributions to d.c. political figures. those donations were linked to mayor vincent gray's 2010 campaign. he denies any wrongdoing. the feds say he is cooperating with their investigation and want to postpone a hearing

scheduled later this week until february. well now to a big new development today involving the attack in benghazi. two years ago, the attack that killed four americans at the embassy there. the only person to be charged appeared in federal court today in d.c., where there were new charges filed. nbc news justice correspondent pete williams joins us with the significance of this. what were the new charges? >> the new charges were actually filed last week, a new indictment. more koublts. they carry the death penalty, just like the earlier charges. but they do give more detail about what the government says abu -- ahmed abu khattala did. they say he was the ring leader of a militia in libya and helped plan the attack on the benghazi consulate and mission that was the annex in which four people were killed and three people were injured. and then they say after the attacks, khattala entered the mission compound and supervised the plundering of documents, computer files and maps, some of which they say contain

classified information. this was his third appearance in court. remember, he was snatched out of libya in june. he didn't say a single word. his public defender entered a not guilty plea for him. and that sketch you just saw, listening to a translator to all the proceedings. as a matter of fact, at one point the judge said does he have a copy of the indictment in arabic, and they're working on that. >> do they believe there are other people involved and they're going to be able to get ahold of them, or is he it for now? >> frankly, that was the most interesting part of the hearing today. at one point, the judge said is this going to be a single-defendant trial? that seemed to catch the prosecutor off guard. he thought for a while, and he said, well, it's all still under investigation. >> wow. >> that's -- >> interesting. >> yeah. >> very. all right. pete williams, thanks so much. we appreciate it. >> you bet. and we showed the video of a local clerk shot in a store. now we're going to tell you what made that robber pull the trigger. d.c.'s pot laws sparking new controversy tonight.

a clerk is shot outside an alexandria convenience store and the video may hold the clue as to why the robber became violent. the clerk is in the hospital. working around 11:30 last night on north washington street when this started to unfold. news4's zachary kiesch says it took a violent turn because the robber had trouble getting out the door. >> reporter: it appeared as business as usual at the bustling gas station in old town alexandria, but in reality, it's anything but after a clerk was shot last night. look at the surveillance video, a gunman barging into the clerk's booth 11:30 sunday night, takes cash after the clerk unlocks the drawer, then shoots the clerk anyway. >> nice guy.

>> reporter: dennis cain has been the owner of the liberty gas station along north washington street for more than 20 years. today he's as shocked as anyone. >> first time. first for everything. >> reporter: according to cain, the robbery suspect got behind the counter after the clerk failed to close a gate. you can see him demand the money, and he appears to leave. with cash and cigarettes in hand, that's when the suspect makes a break for the door, but instead of pulling the door open, he tries to push his way out, and gets stuck. that's when the robber gets frustrated, thinking the clerk locked him in, so he returns and fires one shot. hitting the man in the hip area. >> i get off at work at 11:00, and we come here about 11:30, 12:00. >> reporter: yeah, on a regular basis? >> yeah, to get gas. >> reporter: she is a regular here and says the customer service is the reason why. >> the clerk did exactly what we tell people to do. you know, if there is a weapon involved, comply with the suspect's demands. and he did what he should have. and then the suspect still shot

already one of the impacts coming through now. let's show what's happening outside. first off, dealing with a lot more in the way of cloud cover than we saw earlier today. high temperatures got up a little above average, mid to upper 60s today. and that's above average today. look at the sunset down at 623. but already dark with clouds. 68 degrees currently. 64 by 7:00. a nice evening. getting cooler by 9:00. and then the showers move into the d.c. metro area around 10:00, 11:00 tonight. right now the showers back towards the west. not leesburg or warrenton but winchester, the martinsburg area. if you're around i-81, front royal seeing showers your way in the next hour. through west virginia. the whole system itself, this is the first piece of this system moving on through here. so we will see more showers from this line. most of this activity will move right up you to our north and continue to move up toward the north. but then things get different. driving impact tonight between 6:00 and 8:00, dry roads. not worried about this evening.

hammond, indiana. a tip led police to a home in gary, where they arrested vann without incident. during his interrogation, vann confessed to that one murder, and six others. after confessing to the killings, vann led police to the remains of six women in abandoned houses throughout the city. >> from speaking with my investigator, this seemed like he just wanted to get this out and get it over with. >> reporter: neighbors to the abandoned homes were shocked by the discoveries. >> it's just crazy that somebody would do something like that and spread bodies everywhere. >> reporter: these seven bodies may not be all. >> it is possible that investigation will lead to more victims. it could go back as far as 20 years, based on some statements we have. >> reporter: a convicted sex offender, vann, found guilty of assault in texas back in 2009 for attacking a 25-year-old woman. now he is being charged with at least one murder while police work to tie him to six others and possibly even more.
