but we're also learning more about the mid-air collision that killed three people today in maryland. in fact, we just got some recordings from air traffic control in frederick, and they give us some idea what happened. >> we can hear the tower warn the pilot of a small plane, that three helicopters are in the area as the plane is about to land. the pilot acknowledges that. and we warn you, listening to what happens next may be difficult. >> three helicopters below you in the traffic pattern. >> i have two of them in sight. >> the two echoes here have you in sight. maintain your altitude until turning base, clear to land. >> oh, god! oh god! >> one airplane down and helicopter down. >> yes, yes, i just saw.

911 is on the way. >> those voices you heard were from the control tower and from people who survived the crash. the two men on the plane survived. three people in the helicopter were killed. jackie bensen is live in frederick where federal investigators are now on the scene. >> late word in maryland state police tonight identifying the men who died. we're told they are christopher parsons, 29 from westminster, maryland, william jenkins, 47 of morsisson, colorado. and breandan mac fawn, from cumberland, maryland. all three men were on board the helicopter. >> part of the crash scene illuminated so they can examine the two aircraft involved in an unusual mid-air collision at the frederick, maryland, municipal

airport. >> the helicopter's destroyed. >> just before 4:00 p.m., witnesses reported hearing a loud boom from not far above the tree line. >> i saw an airplane hit a helicopter. it proceeded down. i checked to see what was going on, pulled both those guys out. >> the plane crashed into a wooded area, amazingly the pilot and his passenger were uninjured. records show it's owned by graeves in maryland. they say the plane's blisk parachute may have played a role in their survival. >> the parachute system that's installed on the aircraft has resulted in the successful landing of several of their airplanes. >> tragically, the robinson

helicopter did not fare as well. it crashed into a storage facility with catastrophic consequences. the ntsb says that at the time of the collision the plane was on approach to land, and the helicopter was departing. the investigation will be wide-ranging. >> one of the things i'm going to look into is whether or not it was a pleasure flight, training flight. i have no idea. >> maryland state police have released the names of the two men who survived. 55-year-old scott graeves of brookville maryland and gill porter from sandy spring, maryland. graves has a very good reputation as a pilot in the community, very well respected. we're told by the ntsb, this investigation could take some time. live in frederick, jackie bens ep, news 4. >> we're also following breaking news out of new york where a doctor who returned from west

africa has been diagnosed with ebola. new york city mayor bill de blasio announced the diagnosis at a news conference. the doctor's name is craig spencer, he is a physician who returned from treating patient in guinea. this morning he called the health department with a 103-degree fever, hazmat teams responded and people who came in contact with him are already being tracked down. >> we've acted very quickly. we believe there are four people he came in contact with during the relevant period, and we are already in contact with all four people. >> the cdc is also sending a go team to new york, a procedure put in place after mistakes in dallas. cdc said he passed through extra airport screening when he arrived back in the united states. we have more details on our website nbc washington.com.

eventually make those later too. live in fairfax county, news 4. >> breaking news, d.c. police are asking for help finding a 7-year-old boy who has been missing for two weeks. this is zyvaunte higgins, last seen back on october 9. 4 feet tall, about 70 pounds, last seen wearing blue jeans and a pink polo shirt. if you have any information about him, or have seen him, please call the police immediately. >> family and friends will say goodbye tomorrow to two sisters who were killed in a car accident in oxen hill. they were stopped at a light on the livingston road when another car slammed into them two weeks ago. five people were killed. tonight a public viewing was held for both sisters. their funeral will be tomorrow morning. the sisters left behind ten children between them. police have arrested a

driver they suspect hit and killed a woman who was riding her bike near a metro station. tanya reeves was riding her bike down 8th street, about a block from the shaw metro station. a light-colored sufr ran into her and drove off. reeves died at the hospital and police say dhani thomas was driving that suv. she's been charged with second-degree murder. >>. [ applause ] >> quite a standing ovation in honor of the man who stopped the killer in parliament, sergeant-at-arms kevin vickers of the clearly moves as lawmakers applauded him for minutes. he shot the gunman yesterday and moments later, he was calmly securing the halls of the building, gun in hand. >> the royal canadian mounted police confirm that michael zehaf-bibeau acted alone. he shot and killed a soldier who

was guarding canada's tomb of the unknown soldier. new video shows him walking into parliament where he opened fire again. he had recently tried to get a passport to go to syria. his mother released a statement, saying, she's crying for the victim, but not for her son. turning to our weather now, there was quite a show in the skies tonight. doug's here with a new look at that partial solar eclipse. doug? >> it was only viewable for about 15 minutes and tough to see in our area, but the farther west and northwest you were, you got a pretty good show. areas out towards los angeles, this was the time lapse. look at the moon, coming right across the vision of the sun, really just an amazing picture out there today. this was from the griffith observatory. one other thing you notice, the dark spots in the middle of the sun, those are definitely some sun spots in that area. those sun spots about the size of ten earths. so an amazing view today across portions of the western part of our country. the eastern part of the country has been under rain and much

cooler temperatures. today a little bit on the cool side for sure with the wind. but the storm system's moving out of here. what's moving in, warm air, just in time for the weekend and even into next week. wait until you see the numbers i have in the seven-day forecast. new surveillance tonight of an armed carjacking. d.c. police are trying to identify the men in this video. the carjacking happened at a gas station on new hampshire avenue near northwest around 8:50 yesterday evening. in the video, the men get identity of the car on the left side of the screen. one man pulls the passenger out of another car, forcing the driver down on the ground. after robbing the victims, they took off. police want to hear from you if you have any information. new tonight, a local family is reacting to news that the police mishandled their grandmother's missing person

case. she flew into reagan international airport last year. three days later, her body was found less than a mile away. today a report released that several officers made inappropriate comments calling kong a 9,000-year-old alzheimer's woman. >> although mere words are inadequate i was able to offer my sincere condolences to the family and apologize for the inappropriate comments. >> the kong family released a statement tonight through their attorneying, saying it's troubling to receive this report which includes a number of details that open wounds not yet healed. it is our hope that this report will serve as a vehicle for bringing about change in the way missing persons reports are handled. next at 11, a brazen attack that was caught on video, how two police officers are doing after getting attacked with a hatchet. and one of the first cases

>> new video tonight shows a man swinging a hatchet at new york city police officers just seconds before they shoot and kill him. this happened in queens this afternoon. police say four rookie cops were posing for a photo when without a word the man came rushing at them with a hatchet. he hit one officer in the arm and another in the back of the head before the other two officers fired. a bystander was also accidentally shot in the back. she and the two officers had to be taken to the hospital. police say it's too early to know the suspect's motive. three people have applied for permits to carry concealed weapons in d.c. on the first day that applications were

available. d.c. council changed the law to allow concealed carry. but owners can only carry guns outside their home if they can justify the need for a weapon. they also have to attend 18 hours of firearms training. guns are still banned around schools and government buildings and are not allowed within a thousand feet of demonstrations or public dignitaries. >> less than two weeks until election day. new tonight, two of the candidates for mayor answered questions. muriel bowser did not attend. erika gonzalez served as moderator. election day is coming november 4th. tonight a maryland woman said she's the victim of revenge porn and she's only talking to news 4 about what she's going through. the woman and a former bif recorded some of their sexual

encounters, but she said he released the video on at least two porn sites. he's from frederick county and he's believed to be one of the first men charged under maryland's new law. court documents say he posted the women's address with the videos and encouraged other men to rape her. >> it's ruined me and it's going to continue ruining me. these things just don't go away. >> if he's convicted, the maximum penalty is two years in jail a a $5,000 fine. national weather service has confirmed a tornado hit a part of the state near portland, oregon. damaging buildings and knocking down trees and power lines. police in long view, washington asked residents to avoid one part of the city, but right now, there are no reports of injuries. again, that's in oregon. >> you saw how powerful the winds can be.
