>> the new information is coming into the news room. >> we're told it is 13 people, including several children, treated by these first responders, all of them being treated in sandy spring, near excaliber road. we've seen a couple of people put into ambulances. two children had to be flown out from that scene. and again, we're told 13 people in all injured. several of them children. again, these are live pictures from chopper 4, everyone is expected to survive. but norwood road in that area is closed. news 4 has more. >> wendy, thank you, more breaking news now out of the mohave desert in california where a spaceship designed to carry tourists up in space has crashed in the desert and at least one person is dead.

a witness says that virgin one person was dead. it is dropped by high altitude and ignites a rocket to carry it up into the upper reaches of the atmosphere. it is typically flown by two pilots, california highway patrol says at least one person is dead. virgin galactic has not released details other than confirming the crash. this comes after the rocket exploded just after liftoff again from wallops island in virginia this week. it was heading into space from the space station on a re-supply mission. now, to the weather. everyone wants to know if the conditions tonight will be a trick or a treat. what about it, veronica? >> i think we'll all get a nice treat this evening. but a trick it will be for the remainder of the weekend. take a look outside right now.

we have again scary clouds, lowering, not producing any rain just a couple of bats and witches there flying by. meanwhile, the temperatures across the area are on the cool side. one of the cool locations, 52 around gaithersburg, and germantown, 57 degrees, around d.c., and arlington, 53 in dulles and sterling. there is a look at the rain just to the west marching through areas of west virginia, hitting western maryland. so it is pretty far away right now so your chance of rain, folks, i don't think we'll see any showers at all until maybe 11 p.m. and midnight. and it will turn cooler, and temperatures dropping from the mid-50s to 50 degrees by 9:00 p.m. and huge changes for the weekend. talked about it yesterday, getting ready to pull out the coat. we'll show you more on the temperatures when the rain moves in and out later. a warning from police as your kids get ready to go trick-or-treating. >> boxes of chocolates and candy, some laced with marijuana

are turning up in prince george's county. as news 4 reports, it is the timing that has people so concerned. >> monkey bars, blueberry bits, these all look like great halloween s b as it turned out they're more of a trick than a treat. all of these were seized by the police department because they were infused with marijuana. police are making the announcement today a precaution, they're intended for somebody in the county but were intercepted before they got where they were going. these were packaged to look like candy. they want to make sure nobody is tricked on halloween. >> we consider it as dangerous as letting them smoke marijuana. >> reporter: police say they want to make sure none of this type of candy ends up in your child's halloween bag tonight on halloween. more, news 4 at 5:00. now to a bizarre attack that

has neighbors concerned to halloween after a guy swung an axe at a police officer. police say the officer was doing routine patrol here on northeast 13th street overnight when a man came up and swung the axe into his driver's side window there. the area is just blocks from catholic university. we're told the officer was not hurt by the axe although he did get injured during a scuffle with the suspect. the man with the axe managed to run off. >> we're very fortunate that the officer in this ca, he did sustain an injury but it was not from the axe. so i'd rather see the axe in the car than in my officer. >> news 4 pat collins is talking with people who live in the area, he have more coming up. this comes after a man wounded two police officers in new york city with a hatchet. investigators believe the suspect may have been inspired by terror-related videos.

more coming up, leaflets containing isis propaganda have been found near the fbi academy and the marine base. fbi is reporting the fliers include an isis flag and arabic writing saying quote, we're here from mexico and came in by train. authorities are looking into the discovery. it is important to note here there are indications the material may not be authentic. for example, the isis flag is printed upsidedown and backward. and the man linked to the disappearance of student hannah graham faced a judge. jesse matthews is charged with the attack. more on the story. >> yes, ma'am. >> reporter: jesse matthew appeared by a video link today from jail in the charlottesville area where he is being held on charges related to the disappearance and deat three ch

fairfax, including attempted murder for the 2005 rape of a 26-year-old woman near rock garden drive. today, matthew's attorney confirmed the 2005 rape, the disappearance of hannah graham and the 2009 disappearance of morgan harrington are all linked. >> they are all distinct cases, it is the fame of what is going on. >> reporter: the prosecutor told the judge the connection between the three cases goes beyond public speculation. >> he is correct these cases are somewhat connected. >> reporter: matthew's attorney asked for a mental evaluation of his client. the judge delayed that request, matthews will report for his first hearing, in the meantime, the attorney was pointed in the fairfax case. so for now, he will have two attorneys representing them, the public defender and the charlottesville public attorney, he should be here for that november 14th court appearance.

. you're watching news 4 at 4:00. alive.e is fadi right now two people are missing and a suspect is under arrest after a series of explosions at a fireworks warehouse in the u.k. police closed roads as they report that the debris was sky high. somebody who lived nearby captured this cell phone video. investigators may reveal more within the hour after that deadly plane crash in wichita, kansas. a plane struck a flight training facility yesterday. that facility will now have to be torn down so firefighters can recover the bodies of those killed in the crash. nbc's ron mott has our report.

you're watching news 4 at 4:00. if you're a working mom, you have a reason to gloat. >> yeah, a new study out there finds they're more productive than their childless peers. and joining us now with details of the study, elon moy, with "the washington post." elon, talk about what you found out. >> i do have a 2-year-old and have one on the way. this is particular interesting, for a study, what they found was over the course of a career women who have at least two children are actually more productive than women who have no children at all. and the effect was somewhat a little bit smaller for women who had just one child. but it was sort of encouraging

news because a lot of working moms feel a lot of guilt over whether or not they're doing enough at home and work. but this study shows they're doing more than enough. and actually in some cases, out-pacing their peers. >> so what is it about having more kids that makes you more productive? is it because you're a good multi-tasker? >> so the study showed the academic research output of 10,000 economists in order to categoryize and pressures productivity. one thing they noted, there could be selection bias. people who were most likely to have children are also the people who are the most organized. people who are sort of the so it could be that being better at your job also makes you more likely to have children. >> and elon, we understand that having young children was found in some cases to take a toll, is that right? >> that is true, it is not that

several cars collided at least 13 were hurt including children. >> these pictures from chopper 4, derek ward on the ground there at norwood road there. what is the scene like out there now derek? >> reporter: well, this scene is being cleared up now. but by all the debris and wreckage you can see it is a serious accident here north of excalibur. pete, tell us what happened. first of all how many cars were involved in this. >>t a started about 2:00, four vehicles, two passenger vehicles, an suv and mini van, and again one of the vehicles overturned. the suv overturned. again, police are sorting out exactly what happened. but we know that five occupants, five children, in the mini van were all injured. but i tell you the life-saving

issue there was they were in s. they were transported to the hospital. everybody else was okay, everybody survived. again, there were a number of child passenger seats in the vehicles but again none of those injuries were serious. two of the kids had more serious injuries but they were not life-threatening. >> can you talk about the ages of the children? >> yeah, the kids in the van were ages three to ten. and the two, i believe it was a 6-year-old and 11-year-old were medevaced by the police helicopter. and all the children i believe ended up at children's hospital. but again, none of the injuries are life-threatening. two are more serious than others, but again, life-saving aspect here was the child passenger safety seats. >> it certainly does speak to the importance of that, now this intersection is still closed but should open momentarily. if this is your regular route you may want to reroute your

seek the death penalty. officers continue to search an abandoned air strip and hangar near the pocono resort, where frein surrendered to law enforcement yesterday. >> there is no struggle with law enforcement. he talked to us about things that occurred for him. >> reporter: like the scratches that police say came during his time on the run. investigators recovered firearms and other items in the location as they continue to try and piece together exactly how the survivalist and sharp shooter evaded search teams for nearly seven weeks. >> we have gained some insight, i would characterize it much as we said all along that he was able to get into cabins and other unoccupied structures. >> reporter: but in the end, with more than a thousand officers joining in the manhunt, the pressure and conditions in the woods apparently took their toll. >> he knew the end was coming. he knew it was a matter of time before he was captured.

take a look over head, this is over the intersection at excalibur and norwood road. the fact this scene is cleared now, it was a serious accident, no fatalities, that is the miraculous part of this. this happened at about 2:30, involving four cars, there was a mini van with several people inside, two adults and five children. the other cars were a mix of adults and children. but again, miraculously, nobody was killed. now several people were taken away, one by medevac, another in serious condition. all are expected to survive. it happened about 2:30 here, at the intersection, where the investigators went through and determined what caused this accident and who, if anyone, was actually at fault. but again we hear from somebody who was actually involved in this. how terrible an experience this was. tahank god, that is the first thing i looked for, making sure

everybody was okay. he was just screaming my name. >> i was just trying to check and see if you were okay. >> the car was broken. >> and you know, we always hear about how important it is to have your children secured in child safety seats and how important it is for adults to wear seat belts when they are in a car. well, this was a graphic demonstration how important it is. a couple of people will be hospitalized. but you know a number of people walked away from the crash, rode away from the crash, and calling the family members and seeing their loved ones you have to imagine what a feeling that is for some folks. as a matter of fact, a little kid was dressed up as the monster, luckily his scars were all make-up. he walked away because
