firefighters describe it as intense. the fire that spread to several adjoining townhouses in frederick. this morning, a sense of relief from homeowners who say they escaped in the nick of time. and the final push. tomorrow is the election day. candidates are making the final hours of campaigning count. coming up, the races that could decide what party controls the senate and a new law that could pose some problems for voters in virginia. good morning. welcome to news 4 midday. right now, investigators are trying to figure out what caused this rowhouse fire in frederick, maryland. you can see smoke and fire. it happened just before 1:00 this morning on south market

street near mount ol ivet boulevard. can you tell us what's going on? >> barbara, within the last half hour, they reopened south market street. the sidewalk here is still closed. there's a lot of damage here. the fire started in number 327. the white rowhouse. it spread down the line. >> i'm really lucky to be alive. another five-minute sleep and i would have been -- i would have been in it. >> craig got out just minutes before his rowhouse went up in flames. he w as the fire spread from one home to the next. >> slowly, it just engulfed mine, ran three houses down this way. so i'm just, you know, continued to spread. >> these photos, taken by the frederick news post, show the intensity of the fire. the civil era rowhouses don't have sprinkler systems or modern

fire walls. investigators say the flames tookd in thcs and then spread along the rooftops. ten houses were damaged. six, like craig's, severely. >> my damage is bad. it's completely -- it will need to be completely gutted. >> fortunately, everybody was able to get out. there were no injuries among people inside these row homes. there wa however, one firefighter who was injured, taken to hospital, but we're told he is going to be okay. reporting live, megan mcgrath, news 4. a fire at a group home in silver springs. the firefighters reunion posted these pictures to facebook. you can see they climbed into the building to save people. many who are disabled. the fire happened about six this morning on mills avenue which is near the icc. we don't know how much damage it caused. you can see the roof of the home

i'm richard jordan at the live desk with more breaking news. the justice department and the epa announce ad a settlement wi ki accusing them of misleading customers and violating the clean air act. here's what attorney genel eric holder said. >> we are here to announce set clean air act that i believe will send an unmistakable message to automakers around the world that they must comply with u.s. law. thi is about 1.2 million cars that according to the federal govern emit more greenhouse gases than the epa allows. as a result, they will pay $100 million in fines. the largest fineser for a clean air violation. they also must forfeit credits given to carmakers for producing fuel efficient models. so, again, that's latest on the settlement between the justice department and the epa.

right in the core of the building. this is designated only for firefighters and emergencies. . it's set to open next spring. tickets will cost $32 per person to go up. in the election tomorrow, three states could make a difference in the makeup of the senate. georgia, kentucky and louisiana all have republicans gaining on or leading the democratic challengers. republicans need just six seats to win control of the upper chamber. a new nbc news/"wall st l says is split on who it wants in charge. 46% of likely voters say they want republicans to control congre 45% say they'd prefer democrats instead. that's basically a dead heat in this race. as you head to polls in virginia tomorrow there are some new things you need to know. news 4's aaron gilchrist is here with what you need to know. >> new laws require every virginia voter to have a valid

i.d. with a picture in order to vote. valid forms of i.d. include a driver's license, a passport. you could even use an employee i.d. card as long as it has your picture on it. if you don't have any of those kinds of i.d.s, you can go to your nearest voter registration office and apply for a free virginia voter i.d. card. there has been a lot of controversy over these new laws. voting rights groups say they will be monitoring dozens of polling places tomorrow. when you get to the polls, here is what you can expect. some of the major races you'll be decidin. mark warner and republican ed gillespie are vying for the u.s. senate seat from virginia. e big ones affecting our area and this race, republican barbara comstock and foust involved in that race in virginia. also, the approval of a $100 million road work project in fairfax county and the contentious race for the mayor

barbara. this morning, d.c. police are trying to figure out how an unidentified woman ended up dead inside a vacant building. detectives were called to this building on langston place in southeast washingto morning. we're told a woman's body was found on fire. but police can't say how she died. the body was taken to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy to figure out if this was a murder. teachers and students are remembering one of their own. 17-year-old dominic petty was killed on a crash on the beltway over the weekend. live outside the northwest d.c. school with more on today's special tribute. >> reporter: yes, good moing. there was a heaviness as students arrived after the weekend today back to school. some walk with their heads down. others had their arms draped over house mate's shoulders. they went to church instead for a prayer session. the news of the up expected

death of dom nein petty has rocked this tight-night school we're family. we're brothers here. it's a really tough loss. >> around here, he was affectionate known as dom. he was a quick to smile natural leader who made those around him better. that's the friend class made conner knew to grow and love. >> it's a guy who loved life. >> reph s buddies. early saturday morning, dom was killed in a crash on the beltway. the car they w this honda, broke down and was on the shoulder when a jeep veered off the road and hit it. dom was in the back sea there were five young mengonzag. >> one of my friends got a text saying come to gonzaga. everyone's getting together. >> reporter: today, his classmates a all boys catholic school started their day with prayer service.

i'm richard jordan at the live desk just in. a body has been found in the wreckage of the costa con yord ya, the ship that sank three years ago. this is believed to be the last victim unaccounted for. now, the wreckage of the ship was towed away for scrap back in july. it was while going through that wreck that this body was discovered. again, that sh rocks and sank off the tuscan coast in january of 2012. 32 people died. now all 32 are accounted for. that's the latest here from the live thanksgiving is not even here yet and the post office is already preparing for holiday shipping. the post office wants to make sure your gifts for your loved ones will arrive on time. the deadline for mail outside the u.s. is december 2nd. the deadline for shipping packages within the u.s. is december 20th.

two spans of the chesapeake bay bridge will be closed tonight for repairs. last night was the first night of the new project on the bridge. starting at 10:00 p.m., the crews will close the eastbound span until 5:00 a.m. westbound span will close at 8:00 p.m. during the day, one lane the d from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. gas selling for less than $3 a gallon. we found this overnight on sherman avenue in northwest. aa app says lower crude oil prices are causing prices to drop. in the distric is $2.20 a gallon for regular. in west virginia, it's $3.06 a gallon right now. dominion says its made it easier for you to navigate their website. custom pages will give you easier access to the content you look at most often.

>> basic yoga pose could reduce spinal curving by as much as 50% in scoliosis patients. th according to a recent study. kim is here with more on that pose. and it's called the side plank. welcome. very nice to have you with us. so tell us about this. you say a lot of people have scoliosis. >> about half of the people who have scoliosis don't know about it because it just presents as back pain. scoliosis can develop later on in life. let me show you what happens in the scoliosis patient. if you look, you imagine you can see through, she's got if you see straight on, she has curves. here in her skull, her upper back, and in the lower region. when you have scoliosis, the

curves not just go that way like normalpeople, they curve this way. se plank is a pose that straightens the spine out from the side. >> even as you get older and your bones are pretty much where they're going to be? >> that's a very interesting question. your bones on one hand settle into place. but part of the reason they settle into pla is because the muscles that surround those bones are weak and or tight. so let's show the plank. so turn around. actually so your back is to the camera. yep, just like this. >> i thi should move back a little bit toward us. >> very good. so comes up with her hands by side. remember everybody, the curves of scoliosis go this way. in addition to the curves of the normal spine. when she pushes her hand into the ground, a curve that goes like this in the spine, anybody with scoliosis is exactly what

i'm talking about. this particular curve happens because she is so tight and weak here also from all the hormonal issues and changes in hollywood which is what bring scoliosis on. >> come into regular plank. >> i don't know how long you can hold that. >> we were talking about her arms were gon did this. if you have back page, not just scoliosis, regular plank pose. she's like a plank of wood on the ground. that's why the pose is called that. straight bes the spine out this way. >> i think it's important to note her feet are up. >> absolutely. now, take your knees down. for people who are having issues in their wrist, who have issues in their tummies and their back, you can actually modify the pose this way. turn facing the camera so we do this sort of wow version of plank. this is up to 50% of people in this study reduce the curvatures of their scoliosis. and so it's a huge number. who doesn't have back page.
