a local school community tries to deal with the heartbreaking loss on the beltway. now 48 hours later there's still no charges. students at gonzaga began the day to remember dom petty. he was killed when a car full of classmates ran out of gas and was hit on the shoulder of the beltway. >> reporter: dominik petty's funeral will be held here on saturday, one week after he was killed on a crash on the beltway. dominik wise a senior at gonzaga high school. today is a difficult day. students and staff gathered for a prayer service this morning. his friends at the all-boys school are heartbroken. >> just a guy who loved life. always smiling and wanting to spread that happiness he had. just care-free. even people that didn't know him

residents of a group home that caught fire this morning are okay after being rescued by health care workers. the fire department posted these pictures on facebook of the fire on mills avenue near the icc in silver spring. we're told five residents. with special needs, have been moved to another house. we spoke with one of the health care workers who went into that home to save those inside. we'll hear from him in our next half hour. he was only a month old and now police want to know who killed him. rajon tireek brown was found unconscious inside a home on trenton place in southeast washington last week. the medical examiner now says the baby was beaten to death. few other details have been released. right now the man who led the city of boston for two decades is being laid to rest. a private burial ceremony is going on now for mayor tom menino. it follows a private mass in his home neighborhood. this is video from his wake on e funeral procession today was

storm system we could be dealing with. news for your health now. new evidence that weight loss surgery significantly reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. british researchers compared two groups of obese patients who did not have diabetes. one group under went bariatric surgery. the other had no obesity treatments. the surgery group was 80% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes, regardless of blood pressure, cholesterol or smoking status. if you are a woman, the conventional wisdom that milk builds strong bones may be wrong. swh researchers found women who drane or more classes a day had a greater risk of bone fracture or death than those who consumed less than a glass a day. experts suspect a sugar found in milk may play a role. >> did you see it? he pulled off a death-defying stunt on live tv again.

governor's race is tight. and it's the same in nine more states. but turnout could be terrible. just 55% of voters in our poll said they are highly interested in tomorrow's elections. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, capitol hill. too many campaign signs where they shouldn't be. the news 4 i-team reports state workers have removed more than 3,000 signs since july. most of them campaign signs. they were illegally placed in the middle of state roads in both prince george's and montgomery counties. normally it's a $25 fine but only commee pay, not the campai. you may be turned away at the polling place if you aren't in compliance with a new law. aaron gilchrist has what you need to know. >> reporter: new laws require every virginia voter to have a valid i.d. with a picture in order to vote. valid forms of i.d. include a drpassport, even

employee i.d. card as long as it has your picture on it. if you don't have any of those i.d.s, go to your nearest voter registration and report for a free virginia i.d. card. therbe a lot of controversy. voting rights groups say they will be monitoring dozens of polling places tomorrow. so when you get to the polls, here is what's you can expect to see in some of the major races. democrat mark warner and ed gillespie are vie. there are 11 congressional races happening. the big ones affecting our area, barbarcomstock and john faust. also a number of local races that includes approval of a $100 million road work project in fairfax county and a contentious race for the mayor of leesburg. the polls tomorrow will open for you at 6:00 a.m. they'll be closing at 7:00 tomorrow night. to find your nearest polling

lot more about the explosion of virgin galactic's space plane over the mojave desert that killed the co-pilot and injured the poolt. federal crash investigators sat to stabilize the plane during re-entry deployed way too early. according to the ntsb, cockpit video shows the co-pilot alsbury unlocking the feathers just after the rocket ignited. but a second lever must be pulled to activate that. no worn pulled that lever. the feathering system apparently deloyed on its own. it's an important factor in what is still the early stages of their work following the crash. >> we are a long way from finding cause. we still have months and months of investigation to do. a lot we don't know. >> reporter: as the company and commercial space industry morn the loss of a respected colleague, co-pilot michael alsbury, virgin's founder says

but terminal brain cancer caused pain and suffering so unbearable that brittany took a lethal dose of medication over the weekend. she'd planned her death with the guidance of her doctors in oregon. >> i don't have to die the way it's been described to me that my brain tumor would take me. >> reporter: her story has provided a platform for a national conversatio about end of life care and decisions. a conversation experts say should start early in daughterhooddaught it's somethi like to think of but being alive has a 100% death rate. >> reporter: people have opinions about their own death. a survey finds a majority of americans would rather spend their final days at home than in a clinical hospital setting. but the same survey found just one in fife adults has completed a living will or advanced directive. and more than half have never heard of a palliative care specialist who can help those facing the end of life.

stories out of a window yesterday in germantown. the 4-year-old will be okay. his injuries are not life threatening. they say the child was playing by the window of an apartment an sweetgum circle before he fell through. a well known d.c. attorney is murdered while on vacation. wendy has the details. >> reporter: we've learned van tiesley was found on friday. the door to his apartment was not locked. there was also no sign of a struggle. officers originally went to teasley's home after a friend became concerned and called police. because he wasn't able to reach him. teasley is a criminal defense attorney in the district. he is a passionate advocate against hate crimes. coming up at the top of the hour, pat collins has the latest on this murder mystery. back to you. >> thank you, wendy.

you're watching news 4 at >> right now, officials in louisville have issued a shelter in place order for everyone living within a mile of this. a huge tire fire. we first showed you the video at around 11:00 this morning. the fire is still burning right now. strong winds in the louisville area have made it extremely difficult for firefighters. they anticipate it will be several more hours before they can put this thing out. it's all happening at a tire recycling plant. so far no injuries. six homes an one block destroyed by fire. right now neighbors in frederick, maryland, are looking to rebuild. the pictures show the flames on south market street this morning. as news 4's mark mcgrath reports some escaped just in the nick of time. >> i'm lucky to be alive. another five minutes and i would have been in it.

>> reporter: craig got out just minutes before his rowhouse went up in flames. he watched as the fire spread from one home to the next. >> slowly, it just engulfed mine and just ran two or three houses down this way and then three or four down this way. just continued to spread. >> reporter: these photos show the intensity of the fire. the old civil war era rowhouses don't have sprinkler systems or modern firewalls. the flames took hold in the attics and then spread along the rooftop. a total of ten houses were damaged. six like craig's, severely. >> my damage is bad. it's completely -- it will need to be completely gutted and rebuilt. >> reporter: s market street was close forward several hours but has since removed. everyone was able to get out of their burning homes okay. just one injury. a firefighter. he was taken to the hospital
