larry hogan won the state of maryland. just the seventh republican governor or will be since 1776. polls said that he trailed anthony brown by double digits. we caught up with him at his victory party in annapolis where the race was called. the first thing hogan said was wow. >> i know we surpassed every single county and precinct. every county was important. >> a ton of time in prince george's and montgomery county. i think it had a lot of impact. a lot of folks crossed over and voted for us. and i think it had a big part of our whip. >> hogan will hold a news conference on his victory in annapolis later this morning. >> hogan swept a big part of the state. he won all but three counties. they are all in our area where hogan's democratic rival won by a large amount. brown received 60,000 more votes in montgomery county and more

than 130,000 in prince george's. the baltimore suburbs, which won for republican bob eurlich in the 2000s may have been the deciding factor in this race. compromise could be the theme of his four years in office. political experts told nbcwashington.com hogan will have to trail chris christie and work hard to appeal to all the elected leaders in a blue leading state. they are expect to go start with jobs and the economy. you can read everything on nbcwashington.com. . the virginia senate congressional district. brat won last night and beat jack trammell with 61% of the vote. he actually won twice if you think about this. he will finish the remainder of

welcome back. new this morning a new survey suggests most people are still texting and driving despite laws against it. according to at&t, 98% of people who own cells phone and drive regularly, 98% know the the dangers. 75% knit texting while driving. some say they read at a stop sign or stop light. >> i think people think i've got this under control. clearly it shows people are crashing their cars. put it away. out of sight, out of mind.

14 after the hour. election day is over. but we are still waiting to find out whether mark warner will stepped his stay in the senate. the race between warner and gillespie is still too close to call this morning. warner leads by less than 1 percentage point. >> he made it sound like he was the winner last night, while gillespie was not so quick to concede. today they will check out votes and certify a winner begins in fairfax county. that's where we find megan

mcgrath with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: well, good morning. this is a very tight race. 12,000 votes separating democratic incumbent warner and republican ed tkpwgillespie. they will certify the results. it will happen here at the fairfax county government center at 9:00 this morning. mark warner spoke to his supporters last night. he seems confident in victory. he admits it is by a small margin. he said what people need to get is that the voters want an end to partisan politics. they want their elected officials to vote together. >> near has a monopoly on truth, virtue or patriotism. i will work with anyone, democrat, republican, independent, you name it, if we're going to make sure we get our country's problems fixed. >> and republican ed gillespie

has not conceded. there is still some work that needs to be done. >> obviously a very close race. 0.6% i think was the last count. so we're going to be patient here. and i think we need to be respectful of the voters. >> and so this morning that canvas to certify the results begins here in fairfax county. will there be an actual recount. now, virginia does not have an automatic recount process. so the apparent losing candidate would have to actually request a recount. they can only do that if the difference is 1% or less. now, kind of interesting here. there are three places in virginia with less than a a 1% spread. one of those places is loudoun county. reporting live from fairfax county government center, news 4. back to you in the studio >> the economy top the concerns among most of you according to

exit polling. 80% of voters were worried the economy was going in the wrong direction. 45% felt the affordable care act was too far reaching. two-thirds said the state's ethics laws need an overhaul after bob mcdonnell's corruption conviction. . first of all, only the apparent losing candidate in this case ed gillespie can ask for a recount. if the difference is less than half a percent, local communities must pay. here is the the sticking point. if it is between half a percent and 1%, gillespie's campaign must pay. so that could affect his decision. if you go back to 2006, george allen did not ask for a recount in an even closer race with jim webb because of these rules. you can download the app to get a push alert. . now to other races in

virginia. jerry connolly beat suzanne scholte with 11% of the vote. this morning, we're learning new information about a woman abducted off a street in philadelphia. the woman has ties to st. mary's county, maryland. a person of interest using her atm card at a convenience store in aberdeen. katie zachary is live in philadelphia. katie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. police still don't know where the 22-year-old nursing aide is. but what they do have is video of her being bducted. and hours after she was taken from a philadelphia street corner, her stolen bank card was used in maryland. . she was last seen on the philadelphia street corner walking home sunday night. here's video of the moment before she was abducted. it shows the suspect approach her. look closely and you see him reach for her hand.

when the victim tries to get around him, he lunges and grabs her. another camera shows them struggling down the block. she is forced inside the car and driven off. the victim's bank card was used in aberdeen, maryland. a source close to the investigation saided the man who used it took out cash. sometimes later in the same shopping center a man appears inside a gas station convenience store. he purposefully walks to the back to the store, grabs a bottle of water and leaves all in under a minute. they dusted for fingerprints inside that store. >> she was raised in california, maryland. they wonder if her abductor is a former boyfriend. philadelphia police are not commenting on that. reporting live in philadelphia. katie zachary. back to you. 5:19 this morning. investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that killed a mother and her

7-year-old daughter. mary and emily were trapped in their home in arlington. the husband was able to save their older 11-year-old daughter but he could not go back in to save the rest of the family. the home had no working smoke detectors. this morning police are looking for a man who escaped from a d.c. psychiatric ward. clayton walked out of the back door of a psychiatric facility off wisconsin avenue in northwest on monday. clayton was in a room where staff are not allowed. clayton is accused of attacking a police officer >> a judge will decide whether a woman charged with vandalizing the national cathedral should be committed. she is not competent to stand trial. a judge said she will probably not make an improvement any time soon. police arrested her in july 2013 for damaging two chapels with a can of green paint. she is being held in a

rice is seeking rein statement and has filed a wrongful termination. it's not clear where adrian peterson will be allowed to play football this year after reaching a plea deal in his child abuse case. he was indicted for disciplining his young son with a switch. yesterday he pled no contest to a lesser assault. two years probation, 80 hours of community service, parenting classes, public service announcement and $4,000 fine. two different studies might disspell what you think about violence in media. they prove the violence you see in movies has no impact on violence in real life. a study found no overall correlation in homicide rates in

nbc's tracie potts is live on capitol hill with reaction to the vote and a look at where republicans want to take the country. >> eun, good morning. they want to focus on energy and tax reform. but first they have to get the solid results of the vote last night. first of all, the republicans are now in control. they have 44-52 for republicans. two independents and a couple of races still undecided on the house side. it looks like republicans have solidified what was already the majority there. officially 242 is projecting they will end up with 250. now, the new leader senate is likely to be mitch mcconnell, the kentucky senator who won his race down there last night. he said it's time for the country to go in a new direction. democrats did hold on to some seats.

15 before the hour. election upset in maryland. republican larry hogan's victory for governor could be the biggest upset in the country. this morning we're learning how he won. when the election began polls said hogan trailed by double digits. even when he won the first word he said was wow. here's what he told chris lawrence when he was asked if he was surprised. >> well, we were. we have experts tell us there was a road to victory but you couldn't get over 50.1. we surpassed every single county and precinct. we delivered what thought we needed to do. every county was important. >> hogan will hold a news conference on this victory later this morning in annapolis. anthony brown was an early favorite in his race. he held his watch party at the university of maryland. >> today we fell short of our campaign goal. but it does not and cannot

they failed to do this. they failed to turn in in. a vaccination fom. it shows they got their shots for the mumps, measles, whooping cough. parents, take notice. your child is within this group. know that from today on. your child will get five excused absences. after that truancy proceedings could ultimately end with court action against you. in a statement cool districts have said they have made extraordinary efforts to reach every student. but now parents need to be the ones to do their part. the count looked like 155 kindergartners. still not in compliance. the school district even before the school year started, they held a lot of outreach and free clinics. school has been out. classes have been out the last couple of days because of

parent/teacher conferences and the election. perhaps more students got this done. and the numbers will be higher than expected. eun? >> angie goff. thank you, angie. also today, montgomery county school leaders will meet to discuss a reported sex assault on campus. under the advice from police and other school leaders, the principal says she waited until now to tell the community to protect the privacy of the student involved. the meeting will happen at 7:30 in the school's media center. csx is moving forward in the district. they gave final approval to double the size of the tunnel between 2nd and 11th street in southeast. some people living in the neighborhood are not happy with this decision. i saw this protest last night. they were outside the transportation headquarters in southeast. they say they will ask d.c. council to hold off on issuing

permits for the project. >> it seems like they are being ignored time and time again. >> it's like we're david and goliath. they are very intent on doing this. >> "washington post" reports d.c. department of transportation already gave permission to take over the roads near that tunnel. a lucky new yorker won a whole heck of a lot of money. mega millions jackpot up to $321 million. a single ticket matched all six numbers. the cash option is estimated to be about $194 million. this is the eighth largest jackpot in mega millions history. >> congrats. >> completely missed it. no clue there was a big jackpot. >> we were all thinking about the elections. love this weather, tom. >> you won't need the umbrella until this evening.
