laying one of many events happening across the nation's capitol. barbara? >> thanks. today, hundreds of thousands of you, your neighbors and friends will converge on the national mall to salute our veterans at the concert for value low. in fact, a lot of people are there already. we're talking to a lot of them. megan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, barbara. the gates opened about an hour ago. you can see behind me how people are already coming in. some folks are grabbing spots in the grassy area. you can see most of the people are coming right up to the fence there. they want to make sure that they get the best spot possible for this star-studded lineup. they've got a ways to wait, but a lot of folks, well, they came with all that they need, food and other things to tide them

security check point. if you are coming down, the advice here is to pack light. they are going to go through your bags. they are discouraging backpacks, hard-cased coolers, no alcohol of course. to keep the security lines as short as possible, they're asking you to think ahead and plan ahead before you head on down here. a beautiful day. it's really warmed up, so folks actually are enjoying themselves in the sunshine. concert starts at 7:00. news4, back to you. >> it does look beautiful down there. there are a dozen sponsors preparing for that concert right now. hvo which is hosting, says it hopes the concert raises awareness. starbucks says it plans to hire 10,000 veterans in the next five years. we'll have more on getting around the closures today. and what about the weather? right now, as we just saw, the sun is out.

saint mary's county. the new maryland governor-elect plans to visit each of the state's 23 counties to thank voters for elected them. hogan beat democrat anthony brown last week in one of the biggest upset wins in the country. >> many of you will head to the polls on january 6th to pick a new state delegate. that seat was left open by republican barbara comstock. one system and two republicans are vying for that seat. they will hold a primary on friday to pick their candidate. >> and we're watching a developing story out of hawaii right now. slow-moving lava has finally reached a home. >> plus, our veterans day coverage continues. the message military leaders and the vice president have for men

leaders now addressing a large crowd at arlington national cemetery for a veterans day ceremony, among the speakers vice president joe biden. and we're getting you ready for the big concert for valor tonight. here's a live look at the national mall. there are already lots of road closures in effect. metro is your best bet and it's expected to be crowded. we're at the china town metro stop to talk about what we can expect. >> reporter: that's right. most trains we're told will be running at rush hour levels at most stations immediately before and after the concert. >> even this morning, the bus picks me up in my neighbor. i had to go a different route. it was about a 20-minute delay. >> reporter: the roadblocks are up, police in place. getting around takes extra

planning even several hours before the concert for valor on the national mall. yellow line trains replace blue line trains. and more eight-car trains. also stations are open today except smithsonian because it's in the security zone. metrorail is running until midnight. nine stations will stay open later to accommodate people already in line after 12:00 a.m. >> today hasn't been bad so far. >> reporter: several roads are closed near the national mall. every street on the map marked in red is closed right now. police are encouraging people to use public transportation. >> actually i'll probably get off work early to avoid it. >> i'm going to have to watch the time. i have an app to get updates. >> reporter: these two drove in early from baltimore for the

concert. getting home tonight will be much more of a challenge. >> we'll see on the way out of here. things are going to be worse once the concert gets out. >> reporter: at the july 4th celebration, metro carried about $200 thousand people away from the metro mall. today, we're talking about 800,000 people. >> thanks, kristen. >> right now, president obama is opening two days of talks with chinese president xi jing ping in beijing. he announced he wants to expand an information technology agreement that works to cut tariffs on it products. president obama says the trade changes will encourage growth between the u.s. and asian nations. and the president also will meet with russia's president today. for more than that, we're joined by mark murray.

>> good morning. >> do we know what the meeting is about? >> they met three times for 15 to 20 minutes. it was on the subject of the situation in ukraine. this has been the big issue. they also talked about iran and syria. barbara, the united states and russia can't -- you know, can't agree at all on the situation in ukraine. the united states has condemned the actions. but it underscores that the white house still has to work with those they don't agree with on other subjects. trying to get russia on board in meeting administration goals on iran and syria. >> they have had an icy relationship. does it seem to be thawing? >> one of these kind of world events, you're going to sometimes be in front of the people you like a whole lot, and some of the people you don't like much. i don't think we've seen any

progress when it comes to russia, but these people are going to keep bumping into each other. >> there was an announcement yesterday from the secretary of veterans affairs. do people feel he made enough of a movement towards fixing things? >> what he announced yesterday was some restructuring as well as the firings on that va scandal that took place. going back in time, that was a huge problem for the administration and for washington as a whole, the va hospitals around the country were letting veterans down, people who had served and fought for this country. what the administration was able to do was is firing va secretary and allowing him to re-sign from his post. that gave him breathing space to make the reforms. it would still have been a big political football. >> i know a lot of people still calling for more changes.

called halfway home which profiles veterans returning from iraq and afghanistan. they openly discuss their struggles reintegrating and really, you know, being able to see the effect of war on the men and women that we send to fight on our behalf. seeing a real need to have programs that work for them when they return home and work for their families. i had been a supporter on the side as an actor. when the studeopportunity came r me to step up, jumpe at that chance. >> when a veteran gets arrested for buying drugs or using drugs, how does the justice department help them and how do you help them? >> champ ups veterans treatment course. we also provide all the training

and technical assistance for the courts. if a veteran is arrested for a -- you know, a mental health and/or substance abuse disorder stemming from their service rngs they will be assessed by an interdisciplinary court team who will decide if they are appropriate for the program. they will receive the structure, the treatment, and the mentoring they need to get their lives back on track. >> there's a statistic on your website that says one in six veterans served will have a substance abuse problem. is that -- have you been able to get out there and find this number, how are you reaching them, how are you actually finding them? >> i think it's important to also acknowledge that the vast majority of our veterans are strengthened by their military service. we can't ignore the ones who are struggling. we do owe a debt of gratitude to

all our veterans including the ones who are struggling on the home front. if a veteran struggling on the home front gets arrested and there is a veterans treatment court in their area, they can qualify and participate in the program. they will receive treatment and -- and also a mentor through the program. it's a rigorous program where they will a peer weekly in front of the judge. there's strict accountability. these courtrooms are unlike any courtroom you've ever seen. but they're also places of hope and healing returning veterans back to our communities. >> we thank our veterans and we thank you for getting involved. >> thank you. a man and his horse and their tribute to veterans. we're going to tell you about this. plus, chuck is back with the first look at the seven-day forecast. when we will notice a major dip in the temperatures and new

highs only low to mid-40s for friday and saturdays. >> thank you. right now, we are counting down to the concert for valor. it begins at 7:00 this evening. there will be several big performances and a lot of you will be there for the free show. the gates are now open if you want to head out. we are live on the nationalnal with what you need to know before you go. are there any good spots left? >> reporter: there are a lot of good spots left actually. there are people here, but there's plenty of room. it's first come first serve until they run out of space. if you look behind me, you can see we're starting to see activity up there on the stage. they've been very hush hush about when they're going to do rehearsals and actually about the lineup. it was about 10:00 this morning when the security gates open. there were people waiting in line waiting to get in. these are among the first people

to come. many people going right on up to the front in the semincenter of mall. many people going off to the side where the grassy area is. we're seeing people throwing footballs around and the like. they have to wait for several more hours. 7:00 is the start time. an all-star lineup. bruce springsteen, the black keys, just to name a couple. it's free and they'll allow people in until they literally run out of space. we could see hundreds of thousands of people. everybody who comes, though, you will have to pass through a security check point. there are a number of them. we are expecting long lines at those check points, so pack light. that is the advice to everybody. if you can't come down here and see it for yourself, hbo is carrying the concert. they're going to unscramble their signal. even if you're not a subscriber, you're going to be able to catch

a philadelphia police officer is thanking the high schooler who pulled him from his cruiser after it burst into flames. it sparked after his patrol car was hit by a pickup truck. the 17-year-old volunteer firefighter didn't think twice about running towards the burning car. >> he's my hero, by far. i'd still be sitting in it.

>> he hurt his head and suffered burns to his legs, but he's going to be okay we hear. in fact, he's already recovering at home. most of us think of the physical effects of stress, we think of things like headaches and upset symptoms. but it can range from your hair, teeth and skin. we talk about stress-related skin conditions. we decided we want to do this because we know you've done a lot of work with veterans lately. we wanted to look at this topic and see how it effects them and how it may relate to the rest of us as well. >> something as simple as acne. when we're under stress it promotes a hormonal imbalance lance somewhat. that is what causes the acne. so it's the male hormone.

when you see adults with adult acne, if you will, then you want to think of possibly a hormonal link. >> what is rosacea exactly? >> it starts out being more of a flushing in the central face and it usually involves the nose. the main thing is when i did work at the va hospital, we saw a lot of men who had what -- where the nose actually enlarged. you see that on w.c. fields. >> it can be from stress? >> it could be from stress as well. there are a lot of different trip wires, if you will that can activate rosacea. alcohol is one of them, but stress, hot temperature, cold temperature, exercise, those types of things can cause it to

flare. >> even kpem ma can be caused by stress. >> it's actually a true allergy. the more people itch, the more stress they get and it gets into this itch/scratch cycle that we cannot get out of. it feels good to scratch it and calm your nerves. >> you say her peas is also stress-related. we've heard that. >> cold sores and fever blisters are the herpes virus. extreme cold or hot can stress you. i know in my office when i do procedures on a patient's face, it can actually kind of ignite the virus to come out on the lip. we do see those types of situations that actually impact some of these conditions. >> so is there anything you can do to stop it, to de stress so that you don't see it on your

right now, the montgomery county school board is meeting. this afternoon, they're going to consider a change in the next year's school calendar concerning jewish and muslim holidays. chris gordon reports. >> reporter: the muslim hall day coincides with the jewish holiday next school year. for more than 20 years, this woman has been advocating for the muslim holy days to be recognized in montgomery county. >> to have our children go to school on the day that we supposed to be celebrating and

thanking god for what he has given us, it's really -- creates a lot of problem in the family. >> reporter: montgomery county public schools have been closing for the jewish holidays since the 1970s because the large jewish population would create high absenteeism for students and teachers. >> it's the main reason. the absentee rate on the holidays when they fall on school days hasn't been considerably higher or lower than it is any other given day. >> reporter: the school superintendent sent this recommendation to the board of education which eliminates the reference to the holidays on the 2015-2016 school year calendar. but muslim groups they say don't say the jewish holidays should be removed from the calendar. >> what we're asking for as a second option is to also have
