making it feel colder than it actually is outside. right now, the temperature in washington, 42 degrees. plenty of sunshine. when you factor in the wind gusts, this is how it actually feels outside. current windchill temperatures around 30 degrees right now. feeling like freezing in washington. heading out this afternoon, going for a walk, picking up the kids from school, definitely need the warmer jacket. feels like temperatures through e afternoon. still feeling like temperatures are in the 30s. mid-30s in washington. tonight, it gets downright cold. low temperatures will drop into the 20s and 30s across the area. the latest updates to the weekend forecast, including when we could see some rain arriving. that will be at 11:30. >> the unusually cold temperatures causing some water main breaks this year. chopper 4 was other the scene earlier when a main broke at seventh and main streets. the break caused ll elementary school to lose water

and to close for the day. and right now, d.c.'s department of public workings is presenting its plan to tackle the snow once it. the hearing on the district's snow removal strategy. three snowplows were on display. meeting is happening right now inside the wilson building. we have some breaking news involving a stabbing in mcclane. news 4's molette green. >> just some shocking details about a violent home invasion in mcclane. one suspect actually caught only wearing a diaper. the husband and wife both lawyers from springfield, there they are up there, face charges in thicase. our northern virginia bureau chief was inside the courtroom during this morning's hearing for 30-year-old alicea shmul. her husband, reportedly posed as law enforcement to get inside. he's accused of torturing, tasi

woman inside that home. the victims were were critically injured were still able to help police track down the suspects. they say andrew shmul only had on a diaper. alicea had worked with the male victim but a law enforcement source tells us she had been recently fired. that is the latest from the live desk. the man charged with abducting a university of virginia student just pled guilty in a separate rape case. a lot of details came out in today's first in person court appean jesse matthew. news 4's julie carey is live. >> reporter: jesse matthew entered three not guilty pleas. his voice so soft at first the judge asked him to repeat his words. now he faces three charges, including an attempted murder, in connection with a 2005 rape in fairfax city. we had a camera in the courtroom today for matthew's appearance. >> jesse matthew jr. did

deliberately intentionally and with premeditation attempt to kill r.j. in the commission of or subsequent to with intention to attempt to defile. how do you plead? >> not guilty. >> reporter: jesse matthew's defense attorneys waived the reading of the rest. then the trial date. telling the attorneys, i want to tell a date that's relatively firm. they finished on march 9, marking out eight days for trial. matthew's attorneys asked he be transferred back to the charlottesville area where he faces a december preliminary hearing in connection with uva student hannah graham's abduction. her remains were positively identified in late october. matthew has not been charged in connection with her death. dna links him to virginia tech student morgan harrington whose body was found near charlottesville in 2010. the alleged victim now lives in india. the attorney says they kept in

touch with her throughout the investigatio her here for trial. >> i've been in constant communication with her. she has small children. a 6-month-old and she's concerned, so i'm working with her now to make an arrangement to meet with her and we'll bring her and her family here probably shortly before the trial. she is prepared to testify and i think it's fair to say she looks forward to final resolution of this case. >> reporter: now, we also expected jesse matthews defense attorneys might ask the judge today to order a mental health evaluation for their client. that, however, did not happen at this hearing. again, jesse matthew soon will be transferred back to the charlottesville area for security reasons. court officials can't say when exactly that will be. reporting live from fairfax county court. two more students have come forward, saying they were inappropriately touched by a

substitute teacher in montgomery county. do you have any comment on that? >> no. >> news 4's jackie bensen tried to talk to that teacher but he refused to comment. he was arrested in october, accused of inappropriate contact with a student. the district is taking heat for waiting to notify parents for three weeks. school officials have now sent a letter to parents. it says he taught at 20 different montgomery county schools last year. they're asking for any more possible victims to please come forward. later today, a wood bridge high school student will be laid to rest. hearts will be heavy at the funeral for brendan wilson tonight. help was shot monday behind his high school. a vigil remembering the 16-year-old's young life was held by family and friends earlier this week. funeral services begin at 6:00 this evening at miller's funeral home in wood bridge. prince william county police are looking for this teen in connection with brendan's

murder. 17-year-old yan moses is the fourth suspect. in a rare mo, a judge allowed police to release moses name and photo even though he is under age. the suspected gunman kawayne smalls was out on bail at the time of the shooting. he was supposed to be wearing a monitoring bracelet. some breaking news out of gai gait this morning. we want to let folks know there is a fire at forest oak middle school in gaithersburg. we can tell you that the kids in the school have been evacuated. the fire we understand is under control. the smoke we believe is on the second floor of that building. again, this is happening at forest oak middle school. our chopper is on the way to bring us pictures of what is going on. as soon as we get there, we'll bring you the very latest. back to you. >> allright, molette, thank you. we're hearing what it felt like hanging on 68 floors in the

new york city window washer rescued after being trapped nearly 70 stories off the ground. juan lopez and juan lasama spoke about their experience during a news conference. lopez, who's been doing this work for five years now, says he is happy to be alive. >> the most important thing is to be alive and also to -- at the moment -- >> now, lopez and the fellow window washer who was with him said they did the proper equipment checks before performing their high risk job. after several hours on wednesday, firefighters were able to rescue the men. they suffered mild hypothermia. they are happy to be alive. another ebola patient will come to the u.s. tomorrow for treatment. the patient will arrive at the nebraska medical center tomorrow

morning. the patient is reportedly a surgeon who is a citizen of sierra leone and contracted the disease there. but also a permanent u.s. resident. the doctor will be the third ebola patient at the omaha hospital and tenth ebola patient in the u.s. last ebola patient in this country was released from a new york city hospital on tuesday. and new this morning, we're learning the justice department has been using planes to tap your cell phone. according to "the wall street journal," planes carrying so-called dirt boxes imitate cell phone towers. the box tricks your phone into thinking it's connecting to a real tower and then transmits your signal. that allows the u.s. marshal service to track your phone anywhere. the program is designed to catch fugitives the marshals are hunting. the program can bypass encryption systems like those on the new iphone 6. it's unclear if the marshal service even needs a judge to sign off on this program. what went wrong? new information on the security breaches at the white house.

website will be able to handle the web traffic. republicans control both houses of congress. are already talking about how to repeal the law. there's a harsh new report from homeland security about the jumper incident at the white house back if september. it uncovers numerous missteps, including one agent who was on his cell phone while this was all happening. nbc's tracie potts has more on this report and the responses from the secret service. >> reporter: this homeland security report details some of the performance, organizational and technical failures that happened the day gonzalez jumped over that fence and landed inside the white house. one of the agents on the northern lawn according to the report wasn't paying attention because he was on his cell phone. he couldn't hear what was happen the radio. he left it in his locker. there was spiking on the fence that were missing that made it easier for him to get inside. they also talk about an agent

who pulled out a flashlight instead of a baton trying to stop him. what is going to happen now? many of these agents are still october job we've learned. the report, although it's harsh, homeland security says it's aimed at helping acting director joe clancy fix problems inside the agency. and we're already getting reaction from here on capitol hill. the head of the homeland security committee says he wants a hearing because what's in this report is not acceptable. from capitol hill, i'm tracie potts, news 4. >> now, president obama is on his way to australia. he's wrapped up his visit to myanmar early this morning. president says he wants to s more progress towards democratic reform in myanmar. the company is trying to reinvent itself after decades of military rule. when the president returns, he's expected to take executive action on immigration. republicans are making plans right now to stop him. for more on that, we're joined by mark murray, nbc's political

editor. let's talk about what the president could do. mi i mean, amnesty for people here in the country illegally? >> they're not using the term amnesty. that's a term that republicans are using in this case. but essentially the idea is the president has wide discretion on who gets deported among the 11 million people living in this country illegally. what's been leaked out so far, this hasn't been official, is that people, for example, if you're a parent of a legal resident or you have children who have already been part of the dream act or deferred action for deportations, the u.s. government isn't going to deport you. asuing you haven't committed crimes. you haven't crossed the border. you've been productive in society, been contributing in the economy, they're not going to make you a priority on deportation. >> what are the republican options? >> they're not all that happy about this. the white house have said,

you don't usually hear that this time of year. thundersnow was captured on camera right along layeree erien ohio. most of the nation is dealing with cold temperatures. parts of ohio could see as much as 10 inches of lake-effect snow by tomorrow. and we have cold weather but probably not cold enough to snow right now, huh? >> well, i think some areas back to the west we could see a little bit of snow if it were snowing there but that's not going to be the case -- >> do we have enough moisture? >> not enough moisture. clouds are trying to work in from the great lakes. i was in buffalo and erie. i'm not talking about thundersnow. if i was in those places, i would be talking about thundersnow. today, we're talking about breezy conditions that are producing brutal windchills for this time of year. windchill temperatures today will be in the 20s and 30s. it remains chilly, cold

just announced a series of reforms during a news conference at the pentagon. >> the reviews found evidence of systemic problems that, if not addressed, could undermine the safety, security and effectiveness of the elements of the force in the future. these problems include manning, infrastructure and skill deficiencies. >> cost of this makeover could go into the billions to fix leadership lapses, security flaws and morale. two reviews found that some of the biggest missteps with management, security and morale inside the air force. that is the latest from the live desk. back to you. >> the european space agency is pushing ahead with efforts to drill into a comet's surface, even though they're still trying to pin down where exactly the probe is. the lander became the first spacecraft to touch down on a comet on wednesday. now, scientists say the probe is drilling into the comet to extract some of the material buried beneath the surface.

well as a great way to prepare in advance for thanksgiving. what i like to do is serve the pumpkin in a bowl of its own. we cut it out with just a cooker cutter. >> do you use that pumpkin from out of there to make the soup? >> you can. really, it's all about having the right pumpkin in order to make this pumpkin bisque. i like to do hubbard squashes. today, a golden hubbard squash right here. >> that's a big one. >> what we've done is we've cut it into quarters and we're roasting it until it's nice and caramelized. >> in the oven. so it gets to be about that brown. time do you need? >> that took about 45 minutes at 375 degrees. just some salt, pepper and olive oil, really simple. what i like to pair with it is ginger. so peeled ginger. ca carrots, celery. i'll add some vegetable stock.

and cream. >> mm, cream. >> and some of our roasted pumpkin. >> i see the butter. does that go over too? jud >> the butter goes cooks down in minutes. >> this is the tumarik here. that's an unusual spice. >> i want to tell you about, this is a pumpkin seed pesto. classic ingreedants. instead of using nuts, we used pumpkin seeds. a very unique pesto here. >> do you want to try it? >> i guess. it sounds unusual. >> i'd like to serve that with my pumpkin soup. a very unique flavor. >> fresh pumpkin seeds with garlic and olive oil.
