welcome to news 4 today on this saturday, november the 15th. it's going to be a cold one, right? >> oh, yes. chill factor is out there. that is going to be the key word for today. check in with team 4 meteorologist chuck bell. >> good morning, everybody. your weekend is off to a pretty start. plenty of sunshine and a bright blue skiel. it is awfully chilly and there's a lot of warm-ups coming your way, either. outside temperatures made it into the low and mid 30s. annapolis, 36 degrees going up for a run to get your weekend started. plenty of cold left out there. we'll spend most of the afternoon with temperatures only up into the low and mid 40s. so it will be sunny and nice, but chilly. salisbury and frostberg playing up at frostberg state today. temperatures at frostberg, only in the low 40s and back down into the 30s by about 5:00 this evening. and another local game, penn state, the noon kickoff between the nittany lions and temple.

school where today's memorial is being held. good morning. >> good morning. a somber morning out here in alexandria, virginia. but this is a celebration of hannah graham's life. this programs expected to start at 11:00 and hannah graham's parents are expected to attend. let's show you some photos of her. she was an 18-year-old university of virginia to ha mo. people say she was the type of person to light up a room. she played softball here at west potomac high school. she was well liked, appreciated, respected by her and teachers. many of them will be here to celebrate her life today. they will pay tribute to her and keep in mind many of them will be thinking about hannah graham's remains. they were found near charlottesville after a month-long search. jessie matthew is charged with her kidnapping. but keep in mind, back out here, this is a celebration of her life. many of them will share stories of how they used to play with

sutherland and her friends wanted it sooner. they appealed and won with some legal help after writing a letter. e says she will be able to educate her classmates about alternatives to abortion. health officials at the university of maryland and college park say they're still seeing some activity of meningitis after last month's outbreak. so far this school year, there have been 31 cases of viral meningitis on that campus. some of those students had to be hospitalized. viral meningitis usually last for three to five days. we're toll those students will recover. l meningitis is the least dangerous of the forms. dangers for sports like football are well documented, but girls are facing some of the same injuries at even higher rates. coming up, how schools are taking precautions. the cold air has settled in for the weekend. there's another big piece of arctic air coming here for next week. you won't want to miss your bone

soccer, field hockey b basketball, cheerleading, the list going on. scott mcfarland reports how hard hits are taking their toll in sports without helmets. >> amelia harmon remembers the ambulance ride, racing to the hospital. but she only remembers some of the injury. >> i told my coach that i couldn't open my eyes. >> a collision with another field hockey player at pace branch high school. >> head to head? >> yeah, head to head. >> they blacked out as she collapsed to the turf. >> i didn't make it back he for the season. >> defense in red. >> harmon is finally fully recovered and back up the field. but in the time since -- >> i can't hardly remember anything from last year. >> and in the classroom. >> i missed about a month of everything. i had to drop my ap courses. >> she suffered as so many other concussion victims do. concussions are often associated with high school football, but an iteam review of injury

reports from every local public school system in the region found in each and every than the football hletes place. more than 1100 girls a year combined as compared to about 960 football players. >> any type of sign or sympte te game. >> let's go. let's keep it up. >> concussion are particularly frequent among local high school girls who play soccer. we found more than 200 opt possible concussion cases region wild in just the past year. about 1 of over 30 teenage girls who plays soccer suffered a head injury. >> times they, lie, black out. it's scary, honestly. >> ashley toy says she's seen it first hand. >> you can get kicked in the fat kicked in the face one. >> but our review discovered hundreds of local field hockey blars pulled for head injuries and doesz of cheerleaders. each local district surveyed says it has a concussion

protocol. the kids are only allowed to return to the field after being checked by a medical professional. but we don't one local school system in particular pulling a larger percentage of its athletes out of the game. if there's any sof sympto w taking them out. >> fairfax number of athletes male and female to the number of conkigsz reported and noted at least one concussion reported for every five athletes, far more frequent than the other districts. fairfax county's athletic director says their threshold for pulling off the field is low, very low. >> a headache, to us, is concussion. that's what you're seeing in those numbers the. >> fairf has a full time trainer on staff for all of its athletics. nearly all maryland districts have one staff trainer or use private contractors to be on duty. montgomery county has significantly increased its training staff. >> it was pretty heartbreaking.
