freezing air and when this will finally move out. it is the coldest day of the season so far. we are shivering our way through some strong winds and frigid air and with perhaps the coldest yet to come. with pat lawson muse, i'm jim handly. let's go to storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson in the storm center with your first foreca this tuesday. vj? guys, this is the kind of cold you really don want to be out outside in for long. you walk to your car, want to move as fast as you can. look how we started the day today. this only tells part of the story. temper in the 20s throughout the area, leesburg, get e this morning. reagan national airport started at 28. the record, 21. and tonight the readings, those temps even lower. good thing, though, the winds will start to ease off. last night our winds picked up right near 40 miles per hour. look at the winds today.

they have been just over 30 but now wind dropping in locations like d.c. and leesburg over 30 now. again, falling. your wind chills currently in the teens to low 30s across the area. so, today those wind chills have been in the 20s by morning. we're back in the teens. but will we have a chance to come out of it by tomorrow afternoon? a lawyer accused of stabbing two people will stay in jail. >> andrew small and his wife alicia arguing for bail today. his lawyers said he's disabled and should be released. so he can be cared for. but prosecutors showed a photo of him at a kick ball tournament and said he kicked, ran bases and even pitched. authorities say the attack stemmed from alicia's dismissal from the law firm where she worked. > now to new developments in a horrible attack at a synagogue

in jerusalem. and the ramifications here. three of four murdered worshippers are americans are dual israeli citizenship. they were killed by citizens who stormed the synagogue during morning prayers armed with meat cleavers and a gun. the cousins were killed in a shootout with police, which was caught on tape. now to missouri. moments ago, the governor there ore in the members of the new ferguson commission. he announced the citizens committee last month to address conditions highlig by the protests over police shooting that killed michael brown. meanwhile, the city braces for more violence, and waits for the grand jury decision. nbc's jay gray joins us live from ferguson with the latest today. >> reporter: hey, jim. what you see in ferguson right now, a lot of security fences. a lot of buildings boarded up, as you can see here. and there are still a lot of questions here. like when will that grand jury reach a decision, what will it be, and what ha

if the grand jury declines to indict, there will be protests in our area, as well. a protest in mt. vernon square will take place the day of the de or the next day. we also hear that will be organized by the washington chapter of the national black united front. and there will be a protest in downtown baltimore, spons by the baltimore people's power assembly. the remains of dr. martin salia are now in the hands of his family. he was cremated, according to officials at nebraska medical center. dr. salia died there yesterday. he contracted ebola in sierra leone. his family lives in prince george's county. in our next half hour, the latest on u.s. government efforts to fight ebola. first at 4:00, police in charlottesvie kno caused hannah graham's death but they're not releasing that informatn yet. of the she was the fairfax opportunity whose body disappeared in september. her body found in albemarle county. jesse matthew is the last person

known to have been seen with her. he is being held in connection with her abduction. another dramatic development in d.c. politics. today mayor vincent gray refused to comment on a report he rejected a plea deal with prosecutors who are looking into his 2010 campaign. the "washington post" reports that gray got the plea offer back in september. it would have allowed him to plead guiltyo one felony count in the long-running probe of the gray shadow campaign. today news4's tom sherwood tried to talk to the mayor. we'll show the mayor's reaction coming up right here at 5:00. you'll want to stay with us for that. a virginia woman may be the latest isis social media recruit. she is behind bars right now. heather kauffman is from henriko county. investigators e s isis on facebook and tried to connect a potential recruit with a filter in syria, according to court documents. it turns out the potential recruit was an undercover fbi agent. kauffman's attorney says she was no connection to the terrorist group.

> the push for street cars in arlington has now run out of power. the arlington county board voted a short time ago to end funding for the plan. the virginia bureau chief, julie carey, broke t on twitter today. the street cars would have run between leesburg pike and potomac yard, connecting crystal city and pentagon city. the line would have cost $333 million, but de support of the majority of arlington residents. the board chair says the board can no longer ignore political reality. what do you think? do you think a street car system is a worthy transportation opti in today's day and age? well, visit our home gauge, nbc washington, or our facebook page and weigh in with your opinion. we'll see the results of the survey coming up later on news4. eight inches. that's all that separated a sleeping couple from this plane that crashed through their roof. the single-engine plane slammed into the living room of their chicago home just before 3:00 in the morning. the pilo was killed.

chris gordon they are closely watching the situation overseas. >> r good afternoon. security is tight here at the jewish community center of greater washington in rockville, maryland. chances are, as you look around behind me, you will notice no change. and that's the way they want it. this morning after local jewish leaders heard the reports of the murders of three americans, including a prominent rabbi and british worshipper at a synagogue in jerusalem, they began coordinating efforts with local police. >> in light of today's attack, our campus security director has already been in communication with local montgomery county police, as well as general terrorism task force in montgomery county. and they are, you know, on the lookout for what's going on in the area, and they're providing the types of services that they need to provide us. >> reporter: ts latest from the jewish community center of greater washington in rockville, maryland. >> chris gordon.

thick black smoke barrelled into an industrial park in california. a tanker burst into flames. two drs inside the truck and three firefighe in this is a vacuum truck filled with organic peroxide, which is an unstable chemical. they evacuated everyone within a one-mile radius and people working within three miles were ordered to stay indoors. hazmat crews are on the scene, but they don't think there will be any environmental trouble from this fire. health officials in virginia are now looking into an illness that sickened students at uva over the weekend. more than 15 students have been treated for vomiting and other stomach ailments. one of the university doc believes it could be a fast-spreading virus, because most of the students have recovered within 24 hours. a university spokesperson says there's no evidence the illness is food-related. winter's dangerous return. we'll take you to a place that could get five feet of snow by

to lake erie. you can see the snow here is nothing to mess with. serious stuff. winter hasn't even yet arrived officially, and some parts of the country are already being hit hard. >> sure are. storm team 4 meteorologist veronica johnson joins us here. vj, extremely cold all over the country. but important to remember, it could be a whole lot worse than we've got here. >> and all we have to do is look at images from off the lakes. this is really cold air coming in. what it's allowed is that lake-effect machine to kick into overdrive, to work over time. and there have been locations just up to our north, guys, that have gotten more than 4 feet of snow. and they're not done yet. they're going to see more snow tonight, and could get a little more at the end of the week. toughing it out in western new york has been the weather channel's mike bettes. >> the lake-effect snow has been pouring down in western new york here in hamburg, which is just south of buffalo. it has snowed about 15 inches since last night, and the plows have been out to mounds of snow on the sides of the road. and we're just beginning with this. the lake-effect snow likely to

last at least the next two days. so the snow piles could be measured in several feet before all is said and done. obviously, travel is severely impacted portions of i-90 shut down now, as well as multiple major arteries around buffalo, including 219 and the skyway. banning travel south of buffalo right now. so a very difficult travel. not to mention, the airport impacted as well. trying to keep up with the snow there. roughly 40 flits have been cancelled out of buffalo international. pl check with your air carrier and make sure your flight is good to go. it's really reduced visibility. i'm not sure how many flights will get in and out of buffalo as the bands shift back and forth betwe buffalo and south. as far as the temperatures go, very cold. wind chills down into the single digits. and winds should howl through the remainder of the day, meaning very, very dangerous wind chills. schools can as a result of e snow and the cold. that's the latest from hamburg, new york. i'm mike bettes for nbc news.

>> we promised you could feel better after that. these are the locations we're talking about. buffalo right there. watertown. all these areas off the lake seeing several feet of snow. and, in fact, more than 50% of the nation now covered in snow, thanks to the cold and all these active weather systems. even frostburg and bay ard picking up a half foot of snow. 20s, fredericksburg, around quantico, stafford too. mainly in the teens and low 20s throughout the area. and as far as that lake-effect goes, you can still see it here on satellite and radar. for us, it's a mostly clear sky we're going to e eveni that will allow the wind to really abate and ease next couple hours. so clear and cold by 9:00. not as window by 11:00. our temperature goes from 33 to 27 by 11:00 p.m. so will it feel better tomorrow? you're g to need to make sure the kids are dressed all up, and that inclus a hat, warm coat, gloves, even a scarf

for the girls or ladies heading out. your low tempes tonigh these are the air temperatures, dropping to 17 around in the city. 19 la plata. 17, 16 in leesburg. generally into the teens to low 20s, the actual air temperatures. will put our wind chill readings early tomorrow morning, 6:00 to 7:00 a.m., back around the teenls. feeling better by the afternoon. 20s by noontime. 6:00 p.m., mid 20s throughout the area. so a little bit of less harsh weather for our area tomorrow. and in terms of weather systems, we're not going to see much in the way of any showers coming through. it's going to be dry for the rest of the workweek. but watch what happ wedn tomo the clouds increase. there is 3:00 p.m. we turn partly sunny. and then mostly cloudy. in fact, there is a weather system that's going to be moving through before the end of the week that will take our temperatures down again and allow the winds to pick up once again. so breezy and cold for tomorrow instead of windy and very cold. temperatures range between 33

you're watching news4 at 4:00. drone operators can be fined for reckless driving and an aerial photographer in virginia found out the hard way. a judge with the national transportation safet board sided with the faa in a dispute with him. the faa fined him $10,000 for operating his drone in a reckless manner on the uva campus. that was three years ago. he appealed the fine, but lost. the faa says the decision will lead to an orderly and safe introduction of unmanned aircraft systems into the

national air spa system. adrian peterson has been suspended by the nfl for the rest of the season. and in addition to not being able to play, the minnesota vikings' running back won't get paid. the league says it will reinstate him, depending on how he does in counseling. peterson admitted to hitting his 4-year-old son with a switch, saying it was a form of discipline, and that he never meant to hurt him. the players' association is planning to appeal the > don't recognize the phone number on your caller i.d.? well, scammers spoof numbers and d.c. is one of the most often used area codes. consumer reporr erika gs is here in the studio with where our area ranks. >> you know, 2014, jim, has been a big, big, big year when it comes to phone scams. today the white pages put out a top ten list of the most spammed areacodes, and the district's 202 does make the cut as the eighth-most spoof area code. other than total-free numbers started with 800 or 888, the

most spoofed area codes are detroit, 313, houston, 713 and ft. lauderdale, 954. whether they a grant scams, phony irs calls or anything else, they are illegal, and they could cost you time and money, and, of course, concern. if you don't recognize the number, don't answer. and above all, never, never, never give credit card or personal information over the phone, unless you are the one who placed the call. >> don't do it. also a study out about black deals. so worth leaving dinner early to head out to the stores? >> nerd wallet says no. you can actually take in a few extra zs if you like. according to its research, it found the same products on sale this black friday as last year for a comparable price. nerd wallet looked at 27 black friday ads and found that 25 of those listed the same products for the same prices they did in

it looks like the b.a.s.e. jumper's behind that death defying leap wl stand trial for parachuting off the world trade last year. today a manhattan judge said the four men created a substantial risk of injury to people below, and he refused to toss out felony charges against them. the jumpers and their lookout pleaded not guilty to charges. they ack making the jump, but say no one was in danger, and the charges are unfounded. the trial is set to guardianship in january. former maryland attorney general doug gentzler has a new job lined up once his term ends in january. gentzler today announced he's joining buckley sandler, a d.c. law firm. he'll play a leading role in the firm's government enforcement and litigation practices, and he'll work with clients on cyber security and privacy issues. gentzler has been attorney

4:00. now to an undercover investigatio you he to see if you're traveling for the holidays. when you step inside your hotel room, you assume it's clean, that the housekeeping staff change the sheets and disinfected the bathroom. >> but many of them do. however, there are exceptions. nbc's jeff rossen shows us new video from hidden cameras that expose some pretty dirty detail >> reporter: housekeeping is here, and she's changing the sheets. or is she? sanitizing the glasses. or not? to find out, we're booking rooms for two nights at some of the most popular hotel chains, and rigging hidden cameras to capture every dirty detail. okay. so this is how we found the room. you can see, it's made up. but now we're going to make it look like i slept here last night. so and then there is the card that has to be visible for them to change the bed. we're putting it right in the

middle. we put some soda in these glasses to see how well they clean them. throw some towels on the floor, make the bathroom look used. after the first night, we call down. hi, can housekeeping come up and clean my room? let's start at this doubletree hilton. the maid quickly strips the bed, putting our pillows off to the side. she replaces the sheets with fresh ones. but wait. those dirty pillows she just took off seconds ago get a quick fluff, and go right back on the bed. that's pretty disgusting, considerg people breathe, cough, even drool on these pillows. back in the bathroom, our cameras are also rolling. as she scrubs everything down. but then this. she uses a towel to dry the toilet, the shower and then, watch this, she uses that same towel to quickly scrub the counter. that's where you put your

toothbrush. at this holiday inn, we're astonished again. the maid changes the sheets, but not the pillowcases. once again, putting the old, used pillows back on the bed. remember, at all the hotels we put out that card to change all the linens. >> it's disgusting to watch. >> we showed our video to jacob tomski, he spent a decade working in hotels and was a housekeepi supervisor. whate of the fact the maids never changed the pillowcases? >> that should be the number one thing they change, obviously. if you change the sheets, change the pillowcases. what bothered me was she put the dirty pillowcase on a chair before putting it back on the bed. that's even more dirty. >> this next one had our experts squirming. the crown plaza. the maid collects all of our used drinking glasses. remember, i drank soda out of these earlier. she puts them into the sink. and turns on the water.

next, she gathers all the dirty towels from the bathroom floor. but watch. she holds on to one of them, and sets it down on the counter to help dry the cups. up, the dirty towel used for who knows what, is now being used to clean the glasses you could be drinking out of next. and watch. she even puts on those paper caps to make the glasses look sanitized. then she uses the same nasty towel to wipe down the countertop, the toilet and the tub. she never uses any soap on anything. but she does come back to spritz with room spray so it smells fresh. in a statement to nbc news, the company that owns the crown plaza and the holiday inn say health, safety and comfort are top priorities. it performs regular inspections and is working to review standards. the double tree hilton told us, cleanliness is a focal point of

our operations and has procedures and guidelines in place to make sure things are sanitized properly. the hotel plans to conduct a review and address any infractions. e mai are cleaning, what, 15, 20, 30 rooms a day. >> absolutely. >> is this their fault that they're missing things or is it management's fault or not checking? >> management should stay vigilant and check and make sure they have everythg they need to do the job. and honestly, that's why spot checks are good, and even these hidden camera things are good, because it allows us into the room when we're not there. >> travel experts say in many hotels, maids are not given the right tools to clean correctly. in some cases, management does not even give them soap or disinfect ant. so how do you make sure your room is clean? call housekeeping when you check in and ask them to change all of the bedding, including pillowcases or ask them to bring fresh drinking glasses or just use the plastic cups that are wrap

clouds to move in this time. so our sunshine is going to start to fade a bit. our feel-like temperature early tomorrow morning in the teens. and then by afternoon, this time in the low 20s we're in the upper 20s. this is throughout the area tomorrow. even fredericksbur around areas like charles county, southern prince georgs county, feeling more like 30 degrees. little closer to that freezing mark tomorrow. by 5:00, back down into the mid 20s throughout the area. so, yes, that bite from the weather still going to be with us tomorrow. look at your high temperature, 37 in d.c. 33 gaithersburg. 38 degrees around fredericksburg. even areas like waldorf hitting 38 for a high temperature tomorrow. again, much below average. look ws on thursday. we're up to 47 degrees. we're back down a bit for friday. your high at 40. we've got sunshine at the end of the week. but still okay. we have had worse and shouldn't be too much wind by the time we get to the end of the week. right now the first part of your weekend into the mid 40s. i said you only have to hang on

just a handful of days. looking forwar wha next. let's go to meteorologist doug kammerer, who has got more on the overall pattern. >> veteran car accid talk about the next four days. that's really the cold spot there. but then by the time we get to day five, we're talking about something a little bit different. we h been talking about this cold air across the country. but i want to show what's happening. minneapolis, chicago, both in the teens right now. boston, 32. atlanta today at 36 degrees. that's the current temperature there. but notice denver, which started out at 14 below, just a couple days ago. that cold air has now shifted off to the east, and the warmer air will eventually move back our way. so the cold air across the eastern portion of the nation now, that cold air will retreat towards the west, and we will allow for warmer air to make its way in here. it does get warmer as we start next week. and we're talking a lot warmer. temperatures by the time we hit next monday could even be close to 50 degrees. it will feel close to 50 degrees warmer than out there across the area today. but as we all know, the warm air
