a second straight day. this storm is blamed for at least six deaths including two people who had heart attacks from shoveling snow. the ot in car accidents. the stretch of new york throughway still closed so crews can rescue stranded drivers. the snow is still falling. with more than five feet already on the ground in that area. it could top six feet by the end of this day. record cold temperatures were reported across the east coast, including d.c. it was just 13 degrees at dulles this morning. the previous record was 20 degrees set back in 1990. the good news here today, we don't have to worry about the wind and the sun is shining out there morning. storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell joins us with his first forecast. chuck, good morning. >> we've finally made it out of the teens across the entire area and most locations now have moved into the low and mid-30s. bright sunshine and nowhere near as ferocious a wind as we had to

dinosaurs are a big draw here at the museum. in a few years, there will be a huge exhibitre ing the real fossf a t rex. that's not going to be ready for a while so in the meantime, in six day, a smaller dinosaur exhibit will open and we got a sneak peek. the rex and the trisaritops that have been at the museum for years were taken apart, moved and recently put back together to create a depiction of life long ago. >> this really recreates the whole ecosystem of this world. in one moment of time, 66 million years ago, in north dakota, wyoming, montana. >> there were dinosaurs running around. system that would be quite famili people. >> also features trisaritops skulls that show the size a

weren't recalled everywhere before now. how that's changing. >> the government wants a new recall for the air bags covering every state in the country. new incident was reported in north caroli right here which is outside the zone takata said was dangerous. the company said only high humidity areas like florida and georgia for example, just eight territories were at risk. takata says it does foot agree with this national recall. it put out a statement saying a recall on this scale could divert replacement air bag, away from those states where it believes it is needed the most. federal regulators are asking for at least five car companies to recall their cars. those companies include honda, ford, , mazda and bmw. if the carmakers don't, regulators say they will require takata to issue a nationwide recall. do you know why the air bag

brought an historic snowfall to that year around buffalo. nbc's dylan dreyer is in dunkirk, new york. >> reporter: her in dunkirk, new york, the sun is shining. that's what's so incredible about lake-effect snow. we've had a wind shift now and the heavier snoi has pushed off to our north just by about 35, 40 miles. where the heaviest snow is yesterday, we are talking about feet of snow. six feet of snow in some areas. most of that falling in just a 24-hour period. falling at rates up to 4 inches per hour. it was really in a localized area. >> i've never seen that, it was scary. this is a once in a lifetime thing. this is something people will tell their grandkids about. here we have about a foot of snow on the ground. unfortunatel we are going to see more snow in the forecast. we have a little disturbance

st. louis s ahe of that grand jury. a decision in ferguson, particular among first-time n owners. some have reported selling 30 to 50 weapons a day. the st. louis police department reports a sharp increase in the number of concealed carry permits issued since brown's death compared with a year ago. soon, there could be a new plan to build a soccer stm for d.c. united. the district agreed to trade the center on u street in northwest for land on buzzard's point in southwest. now d.c. mayor elect bowser says she does not want that trade. she'd rather pay for the stadium plot and do something else with the reeves center. >> frankly, i think that we can better control the product we get if we decide to sell the reeves center in the a separate transaction. >> bowser said the center could also be turned into affordable housing. e plans to ask the council to vote on her proposal before the end of the year.

new this morning. kids may be seeing future ads for sugary drinks on tv. soft drink companies are still targeting young children and they're spending millions to do it. in 2013, beverage companies spent $866 million to advertise unhealthy drinks. that's four times more than ads spent for pure fruit juice and water. now companies are ramping up ads on social and mobile media which make it tricky for parents to monitor. the yale rudd center for food policy and obesity did this study. here's another reason to tell the men in your life or a. new research suggest there's a link between transfat and memory loss. the study out of california found men under 45 whose diets included more transfats scored much lower on word recall tests than healthier eaters.

more studies are needed to determine if transfats have the same effect on women. well, ever wish you could run faster or further? exercise longer and harder? well, if you want to improve any part of your athletic performance, the key may be getting more zs. dr. weiner is here with the results of an interesting study from stafford university that shows how important sleep can actually be. we're not just talking about because you've talked about before about mental acute but we're talking about being able to perform physically. >> this is a great study. i really enjoyed this. there was a study done out of stanford where the researcher looked at the men's basketball team. she asked them how much sleep are you gett d used the fitness tracker to monitor it. the average basketball player was getting 6 1/2 hours of sleep. she also did a bunch of physical tests for them. free point shooting percentages, free throw point percentages, and she then followed them ald

told them i want you to get as much sleep as you possibly can for the next five to seven weeks. and then what she did was retested them on these performance tests. it was incredible. what she found was that the benefits and performance were equal to that which you get from performance enhance drugs. so they had 11.4% better free-throw shooting. 13.7% better with three pointers and every single one of the players was faster than they were prior to getting more sleep. so some coach should have made all those professional ball players get more sleep. >> well, they're starting to do that now. a lot of teams are employing these sleep experts to advise them on how they should handle trips, when they're traveling across time zones, to mack myself the amount of sleeps. >> we're talking about both men and women. >> this was the men's basketball team but i'm sure the same thing would apply to women. >> you've mentioned that sleep can also affect men's testosterone levels. tell us about that. >> an interesting study done in

2011. what they found is men who slept five hours or night for even just one week had a 10% to 15% drop in their testosterone levels during the day. that's really incredible. that's the equivalent of aging 11 years. so for men who are feeling kind sluggish, not feeling like they have that energy or drive, it could be because they're not getting adequate amounts of sleep. tell us what happens in the brain when you are sleeping. >> well, we when you're sleepi your brain cells shrink so your brain can kind of wash itself. you have this stuff called spinal fluid which watches the brain at night and clears itself of some of the toxics. some o have been implicated in causing alzheimer's disease. it's helping you solidify the memories from the day. the more you learn and the more new information you acquire during the day, the more you need to sleep at night. it's during that time your brain

figures it all out and file, it in the appropriate places. >> i wake up early without an w can you tell if you're getting enough sleep if you wake up automatically? >> i think the key here is how you're feel during the day. if you're feeling well rested, your energy is good, then it's possible you are getting enough sleep. it importa to recognize a lot of people feel like they're getting enough sleep but they're actually not. they didn't ask these basketball players at 6 1/2 hours whether they felt like they were well rested but clearly they were capable of getting more sleep. so i think that people really need to think, am i getting about eight hours of sleep? if i'm not, i'm probably not optimizing my sleep and i should probably prioritize it a little more tips for getting better sleep? >> keep the room dark. the other one is avoid alcohol. alcohol may help you fall asleep but it disrupts your sleep. you want to keep your room cool. the ideal temperature is 65 degrees. and taking a warm bath or shower

there's already over six feet of the white stuff on the ground there and it's not done snowing yet. part of the new york state throughway is still closed so crews can try to rescue stranded drivers. at one point, more than 100 cars were stuck on the road. the airline industry is predicting 24 million americans will fly over thanksgiving the holiday. if you and your family are traveling by car, you'll pay less for gas this year. but you won't be saving any money if you're flying. in fact, ticket prices are going up. nbc's tom costello asks why. >> reporter: think of that jet engine roar as the sound of decades, record profits this year. part of the reason, j fuel prices dropped 17%. don't look for savings at the tickets countsers. flying nonstop will cost you 10% to 15% more than last year.
