right now at 6:00, some called him mayor for life. a d.c. political icon. >> this is as american as american pie. >> tonight they are mourning the sudden death of marion barry. >> it's a shock to all of us in washington d.c. a legend has truly left us. good evening. i'm chris lawrence. a lot of people did not respect marion barry but others loved him. some of his biggest supporters are coming together right now to remember him. news4's mark segraves is live in southeast. i imagine a lot of people there are feeling this loss tonight. >> reporter: they are. i have to tell you there is a feeling of good spirit here as

old friends come together to share stories and remember their old friend marion barry. there are more than 50 people here gathered at the big charge in ward eight. this vigil started in front of marion barry's house just a few blocks away where his supporters were greeted by his godson who thanked them all for coming to honor the men many have come to call mayor for life. >> i want to thank each and every one of you. >> reporter: long before he was dubbed mayor for life, marion barry was a civil rights organiz organizer. his 40 years of public service in the district started on the school board and included four terms as mayor. barry served the past ten years as the board aid council member. he'll be known for his videotaped arrest smoking crack cocaine in a d.c. hotel room. his legacy will be mixed. some will remember him for personal failures and tax

problems and others for his summer jobs programs for youth, housing programs for seniors, the revitalization of the downtown corridor and a spokesperson for those who lived east of the river. >> it's up to the people he touched to continue the legacy not just in politics but in civil rights and we got to pick up the torch and run with it. >> we'll do it one day at a time and make sure we remember him with all of the respect in the world and thankful for what he's given us in his life and hopefully continue to make the city a better place just like he tried to do for 40 years. >> reporter: now behind me you can see this crowd continues to grow. the people here are young and old, white and black and they've come from all across the city to remember marion barry. i covered barry for many, many years, one thing i can tell you he would appreciate about this crowd is there are speeches going on from those who will

line up to replace marion barry when there's a special election to fill his seat. now at 8:00, a viewing party will be held for one of the last interviews he gave to oprah winfrey. reporting live from the big chair, mark segraves, news4. >> thank you, mark. some flags in the district are flying at half-staff tonight in honor of marion barry. the order applies to all d.c. government buildings. marion barry went to the hospital thursday and was released last night. he collapsed a short time later and had to be rushed back to the hospital and died. he leaves behind a long complicated legacy. barry wasn't just a mayor to the people in ward 8. he was most recently their city councilman and as derrick ward reports, barry's impact there won't be forgotten. >> reporter: at union temple baptist church in ward 8, barry's church in barry's ward,

his friend and confidant, performed a ceremony and from the hills of anacostia, remembrances. >> he was a good person. he helped many a people. >> reporter: there was compassion for a man who remained politically active as his personal constitution faltered. >> i'm sad but i thank god that he doesn't have to suffer anymore. >> reporter: if there was suffering, it was inward. not even those closest to him saw it within hours of his passing. >> i said how are you feeling? he said i'm great. he talked about all of the work he had ahead of him this week. >> reporter: that includes the annual ward 8 turkey giveaway which will go on. >> we'll be right here. he's been doing it for many years. it's going to be a really special day.

>> reporter: it's not just east of the river that folks are remembering and talking about the former mayor. from ward 8 to 8th street and capitol hill, the name invokes memories and opinions. it's not just locals who know the name. a woman from new jersey ponders the legacy. >> i think he became nationally famous for the bad things. it's a challenging legacy, i think. >> i always admired his spunk. >> reporter: in town for the holidays from michigan, this woman believes his name will forever be attached to the nation's capitol. how will that attachment be characterized? >> history will determine that. >> his legacy will live on. he's done so much for so many people. >> reaction is pouring in tonight from those who knew marion barry personally. carol schwartz released a statement saying "i like others thought marion barry was invincible. he personified d.c. and his passing is great loss to us all." a former police chief felt the same.

>> i'm one of those people that thought that marion barry would live forever. a man who gave me an opportunity to become chief of police. we hear about people talking about one city. marion barry was a person who really lived one city. >> fred cook wasn't just barry's attorney, but his friend. he said barry had a gift for connecting with the people of d.c. >> he was a unique person. he was selfless. he didn't get into the political business for personal reasons. he didn't try to make a lot of money in it. he wanted to genuinely help people. he really leabelieved in that. >> president obama released a statement saying through a storied life and career, marion barry earned the love and respect of countless washingtonians and michelle and i extend our deepest sympathies.

temperatures tomorrow 20 degrees above average and breezy. i'll have more on that plus our next storm system wednesday. the big travel day. rain likely and maybe snow. latest timing on that coming up in ten minutes. alcohol, speed, and no seat belts. montgomery county police say all three factored into an overnight crash that killed three people. this chevy suburban was driving down east west highway in silver spring. eight people were inside when it drove off the road and hit a tree. su the suv ended up on its side and three people died. police say none of the passengers were wearing seat belts. the waiting game continues in ferguson, missouri. the grand jury has not decided whether to indict officer darren wilson in the shooting death of michael brown. some people expected a verdict this weekend. officer wilson is white. brown was a black teenager.

crews hope to finish repairing the water main monday afternoon. professors at the university of virginia say they have had enough. they held a rally last night in response to a "rolling stone" report that described a culture of rape on campus. the staff members say it can no longer go unnoticed or unpunished. one professor says she graduated from uva 25 years ago and nothing has changed. >> i am so dismayed when i hear from female undergraduate students that they feel as uncomfortable with the social culture here as i did as an undergraduate. >> yesterday uva's president suspended all fraternal organizations on campus to investigate those claims. could weather impact your holiday travel plans? stay tuned. amelia

breaking news just coming in. the d.c. medical examiner says former mayor marion barry died of natural causes due to heart problems. in a statement, the medical examiner's office says the cause of death were heart problems that occur due to high blood pressure. the medical examiner found that a contributing factor was chronic kidney disease that complicated barry's diabetes. barry this a kidney transplant

several years ago. in new york it's a race against time in parts of western new york as people desperately try to clear piles of snow before rain and warmer weather move in. if it starts melting too quickly, all that snow could trigger disastrous flooding. several neighborhoods are still buried in snow and the weight is causing some roofs to cave in. this week's powerful sto dumped seven feet of snow in the buffalo area. of course even as people keep an eye on those incredible pictures there, they are also looking at the calendar and saying, man, wednesday is one of the biggest travel days of the year. that's got a lot of people a little worried. >> it's looking like rain and snow is likely for our area. the storm system could have a big impact on travel. even if you take out factor of snow, just the fact that people will be on the roads with rain on wednesday. you definitely want to keep an eye on that day if you are traveling. and since you are going to be traveling, great time to download the storm team 4 weather app. you can get radar and latest forecast. that is going for tonight.
