winter storm that could impact your thanksgiving travel plans. you're looking at this part of our region that will be under a winter storm watch tomorrow. that storm could bring snow to some of our neighborhoods. tom kierein is tracking exactly what we can expect. good morning, tom. >> good morning. if you have the option to leave for your thanksgiving holiday today, that would be the wise move. because we do have a large area under a winter storm watch. and that is just to the west of the metro area. and the impact on this system is it does come through the metro area and points east. it will be minimal with rain changing to wet snow. some of the roads may be wet and slushy near washington and the immediate metro area. just accumulations on grass. over to our west, that's where it's going to be almost all snow. accumulations likely and roads will likely be slippery. that's in the shenandoah valley, the mountains of western maryland and into west virginia. right now a mild morning in the 50s to near 60 degrees. and a lot of cloudiness.

morning. take a look at this. this is an advanced auto parts store in ferguson. we have been watching this fire for the last hour now. firefighters just now able to get this fire mostly under control, although you can still obviously see the flames burning there. this is one of the buildings still on fire this morning. maybe a half dozen buildings still burning after a night of protests, looting and rioting. all of this following the grand jury's decision not to indict the officer who killed michael brown. no serious injuries or deaths have been reports. >> but many people have been arrested so far in the protests in ferguson. angie goff has more information live from the desk. as we just saw in the live picture, the chaotic scene continues in ferguson. it's been raging on since the grand jury decision came out around 9:00 last night. our jay gray on the ground saying firefighters now being pushed back by gunfire, not a little bit of gunfire, he said a lot of gunfire. >> we've had a lot of incidents

with officers being hit by rocks, batteries, different things like that. i can tell you that i personally heard about 150 shots fired. >> we are going to provide and we have to come together. what happened tonight can't happen. >> so far 29 people have been arrested. angie goff at the live desk. aaron, back to you. 5:04. michael brown's family issued this statement shortly after that decision was announced. it says, "we are profoundly disappointed that the killer of our child will not face the consequences of his actions. while we understand that many others share our pain, we ask that you channel your frustration in ways that will make a positive change. we need to work together to fix the system that allowed this to happen. join with us in our campaign to ensure that every police officer working the streets in this country wears a body camera. we respectfully ask that you please keep your protests peaceful. answering violence with violence is not the appropriate reaction. let's not just make noise, let's make a difference."

president obama echoed the brown family calling for calm and said the decision in ferguson reflects continued questions about racial tensions in america. but he said we can't forget progress that has been made. >> we have made enormous progress in race relations over the course of the past several decades. i have witnessed that in my own life, and to deny that progress i think is to deny america capacity for change. >> and the president also said the nation is built on the rule of law. and americans need to accept the decision that the grand jury has made. and take a look at the cover of "the st. louis post-dispatch" this morning. it says "no charges for wilson. pockets of rioting, looting erupting." and it shows a giant ball of fire on the streets of ferguson. thousands of documents were released along with the grand jury announcement including new

photos of officer wilson taken shortly after the shooting. the photos were taken in the hospital to show a slightly bruised face and neck. the grand jury heard more than 70 hours of testimony from 60 witnesses. here are some of the things that stood out. officer wilson said when he tried to open his cruiser door, brown slammed it shut. that is when wilson said he pushed brown with the door and brown punched him in the face. brown kept running while wilson fired 12 shots. also, the medical investigator never took photographs at the scene because a camera battery died. a flight out of the d.c. area at the center of a health scare. the incident that forced passengers to wait while the plane was held on the tarmac. and we are tracking a winter storm for you and the impact it could have on your holiday plans. chuck bell is live with your travel forecast next at 5:11. but first, taking the pain out of breast exams. the break through that can one day replace mammograms. your time is 5:07.

of course, this follows a decision by a grand jury last night that decided not to indict officer darren wilson. he shot and killed unarmed black teen michael brown in august. jennifer bjorklund is here with the latest. >> reporter: it was such a tough night to watch. we stood here and watched this meat market behind us get looted overnight as people descended on this neighborhood just a few blocks away from where michael brown was shot and killed in august. and at 1:30 in the morning local time, captain ron johnson with the missouri highway patrol and the chief of the missouri or st. louis county police department came out to say, this was the worst night yet. after all they have been through since august, all the demonstrations and protests, all the violence, last night was the worst night yet. and what they had to do is just watch it play out and not do a lot of really aggressive pro-active policing to keep people away.

tw they were trying to protect the businesses but the crowds were out and very angry. and as you see, you can see there that a few of the fires are still burning. a big fire just up the street from us, we have been watching the embers blow by. and down the street from us, there's smoke and still putting water through a water cannon on a couple businesses through there. really heartbreaking for this community that has been through so much and another huge blow. aaron? >> jennifer bjorklund, thank you. and nbc news learned that officer darren wilson was married two months after he shot michael brown. wilson tied the knot on october 24th. this is his second marriage. "the new york times" reports the couple also owned a home together. wilson's previous marriage ended in divorce. right now you can't fly into the st. louis airport with reports of people firing guns

into the air there. and you can see how close that airport is to ferguson from the map. police say outbound flights are still flying. in ferguson schools are closed today as well as administrators made this decision before the violence erupted last night. and the story is still breaking. we'll have a lot of updates throughout the day today. you can get push alerts with all the latest developments on the nbc washington app. now 5:18. today the uva board of visitors is holding an emergency meeting in response to the rolling stone article that drastically described a rape at a fraternity house. right now all fraternity activities are suspended there as the board could implement a new policy on the meeting. and all college policies in virginia could be changing soon according to the "richmond dispatch." assault should be treated as a criminal defense. the legislature will hold

hearings about the change in january. 5:19 is your time now. fears of ebola caused one airline to take extra precautions. the united airlines called paramedics because a passenger traveling from our region got sick on a plane. the united airlines flight 1173 from dulles to denver was on the tarmac when it arrived late last night. a hospital in denver says the airline called this em to check on a passenger because of the person's recent travel history. the passenger remained on the plane while others walked away. a medical team determined the passenger did not travel to any countries affected by ebola or had symptoms of the virus. the person was released. right now all services are back to normal at the bwi marshall airport. everything seems to be running on time this morning. en underground electrical cable shut down ticket counters forcing cancelations and df wha happening at the airports tomorrow with the winter weather expected in our area. a lot of the airlines are

telling folks not to travel tomorrow. 20 minutes after 5:00, a live look over the district right now. still a warm 66 degrees. tom, i would imagine that could be a helpful thing tomorrow, too, right? >> absolutely. that will keep our ground temperatures, pavement temperatures above freezing for a long time as we'll likely get some wet snow tomorrow. today, off to a dry start this morning. a large area under a winter storm watch. all these counties in blue. it includes northern falkier, loudoun county, the panhandle of west virginia, shenandoah to the west. and for the east, this impact is going to be minimal with rain changing to wet snow. so the roads are mainly going to be wet. maybe a little bit of some slush from wet snow by the afternoon tomorrow. most of the lighter accumulations will be on the grassy areas, but it is to our west where we'll be getting the accumulations that will likely be piling up not just on the

grass but on the roads. the roads will be slippery around the shenandoah valley and the higher elevations into west virginia and western maryland. a mild morning in the mid-50s now to near 60 degrees. and we've got a lot of clouds around the region with us through much of the day. a few breaks in the cloud cover. here's the timing of the green area in rain. that's coming in at 3:00 tomorrow morning. and then light rain initially. there's light to moderate rain in the metro area about 8:00 in the morning. and at that time, that's when we'll likely see it transition to snow. and in the panhandle of west virginia, western maryland, the pink zone is a mix of rain and snow. shenandoah valley, that's 8:00 tomorrow morning. and then by around noontime, we'll have that area of snow gradually creeping off to the east and a little bit of a mix around the metro rare of rain and snow at 2:00 in the afternoon. then changing briefly to a wet snow and then quickly ending by sunset tomorrow. then it's all over. leaving in its wake an inch to three inches in the far northern and western suburbs.

on grassy areas mainly, farther north and west, we'll see higher amounts of three to six inches in the higher elevations with higher amounts in the shenandoah valley. lower elevations could be three inches. just wear a light jacket as we'll be on the cool side with temperatures in the 50s to near 60 degrees. and then after we get the storm through us tomorrow, we'll get nice weather back on thursday and friday. although quite chilly for thanksgiving day and friday. a bit milder over the weekend, saturday and sunday. sunday and monday in the 50s. i'm back in ten minutes to look at the hour-by-hour breakdown with the big change over the next 24 hours. melissa is here with problems this tuesday morning. we have a crab on bw parkway southbound just past godard flight center. no word on how long that could take to move that. and looking at 270 in and out of town, no problems. that's looking good. 66 at prince william parkway rolling right along. same thing as we look at 95 in virginia with a couple work

we are monitoring breaking news out of ferguson, missouri. take a look at the live pictures burning in dozens of buildings and businesses. law enforcement officials are still moving there on the scene. we are not sure where they are heading to right now, but riots erupted after the grand jury decided not to indict officer darren wilson for the shooting death of michael brown. and we want to get you up to speed on the overnight developments right now. police say as many as 25 buildings were set on fire. a lot of cars were also torched. gunfire erupted all over the city. at one point our nbc news crew was forced to take cover. businesses were looted and missouri's governor called in the national guard to help control the chaos. this morning police have made 29 arrests. so far there have been no serious injuries and no deaths. we'll have complete coverage of

this turmoil in ferguson throughout the morning. good morning to you, i'm eun yang. welcome back to "news4 today" on this tuesday november 25th. we are talking about snow this morning as you make your final preparations for the thanksgiving holiday. a winter storm watch could make it tougher for you to get out of town. >> tom kierein is tracking the changes you'll see over the next 24 hours. some big changes, tom. yeah, that winter storm watch is in effect for wednesday and for the shenandoah valley and points west. closer to washington, it's going to be a minor event tomorrow. we're getting rain in southeastern virginia and through the carolinas down to florida. so if you're traveling that way, you'll be running into some rain. right now dry pavement all around the region in the 50s. we'll stay this way through 8:00 this morning. and by noontime, we might have a little sup breaking out and hovering near 60 degrees. it may be 60 through late afternoon and then we'll drop down into the upper 50s and mostly cloudy. tonight we see the big change. that's when temperatures begin to drop. by 11:00 p.m., back down to the

bill bratton. and in new york, a massive march of 1,000 people from union square to upper man hat tavern. taking you to denver now where we got the new video in, protesters marched onto broadway. and we got video that showed that some laid down on the road to block traffic. and speaking of traffic, this is what was going on in oakland, california. we'll take you over there where police surrounded protesters who ended up blocking traffic on a major interstate. it left people stuck in their cars. police are still looking at video from denver we just got in, but i want to let you know that a lot of people were stuck in their cars. some for more than an hour out there in oakland. we are continuing to watch this unrest closely and will bring you more as we get it. over to you. angie goff from the live desk. thank you. here in washington hundreds of protesters rallied at the white house. dozens of secret service officers and d.c. police officers stepped back as the protest crowded lafayette park and pennsylvania avenue.

this is a live look from the scene with more than two dozen buildings set on fire. businesses were looted and close to 30 arrests in ferguson all after a grand jury's decision not to indict officer darren wilson for shooting michael group. and for the first time we're getting a look at all the information and the documents that help the grand jury reach their decision in this case. angie goff read that report as well and has more on that from the live desk. aaron, we have our hands on thousands of documents and evidence. and here is what stands out. in addition to staying in the hospital for two hours, officer wilson was drug tested after the shooting. it came back negative. wilson said he had never fired his gun on duty before the shooting. and that he had hoped to arrest brown. he said the 18-year-old punched him in the face and he feared for his life. we also found out no photos were taken of the crime scene right after the shooting because the camera battery had died. we'll bring you more of the testimony coming up in the next hour. but for now, aaron, back to you.

lining up for barry's annual turkey giveaway. for many families, it's a thanksgiving tradition. we are live in southeast washington with more, megan mcgrath, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we have a couple hours to go. 9:00 a.m. is when they will start to pass out the turkeys, but already we are seeing a line form here outside of union temple baptist church. and the people here who are waiting in line say this event is really important. it's important to them and important to marion barry. something he did every year. and many of the people here today are saddened by his passing over the weekend. but they are glad that the event is still going on. and barry's staff wanted to make that clear. in the hours following his death early sunday morning, they wanted to get the word out that the turkey giveaway would be happening as scheduled. in fact, marion barry in his final days was still organizing and tweeting about the event. he was talking to vendors making

leaving today, that would be the wise move. and when you are away from the tv and on the road, keep up with the storm with your storm team 4 weather app and track the radar to find out where the rain and snow is. you can get it on google play and the itunes store. right now, a big area under a winter storm watch. all the counties in blue. eastern and west virginia, shenandoah valley. and the areas to the east of the blue ridge, loudoun county and frederick county, maryland. that's where the heavier snow is falling, points west, but east of there we'll be seeing a little bit of a slush on the roads around the metro area. rain is going to mix with snow. any accumulation is going to be on grassy areas in the metro area. but to our west we'll see almost all snow with accumulations likely and the roads will be slippery. the untreated roads as we get into tomorrow afternoon. especially right now it's mild and near 50 shenandoah valley. and closer to washington, the mid to upper 50s now.

holding in some of the warmth from yesterday. here's the timing on this area of rain that is green. about 3:00 tomorrow morning we'll have the rain moving in. then it is by 8:00 in the morning we'll start to see it transition to snow in the panhandle of west virginia. then the snow moves east into the shenandoah valley and the nearby metro area around 2:00 to 3:00 tomorrow afternoon mixing with rain. that's a wet snow accumulating in the metro area and quickly ending by 8:00 tomorrow evening leafing one to three inches in the metro area. mainly grassy areas, three to six inches farther west. the highest amount is above 2,000 feet and all rain near the eastern shore as the storm exits. we'll have colder air moving in, but not today. you'll be comfortable in a light jacket as we have temperatures holding steady right around 60 degrees through the afternoon under a mostly cloudy sky. then after we get through the storm tomorrow, a nice day on thanksgiving day although chilly with highs near 40.
