>> keeping the peace in ferguson, missouri. the much different scene on thanksgiving eve. >> and a small step forward in the fight against ebola. it started right here in maryland. >> first, weather having a big impact on holiday travel. the rain and snow have stopped for us. now ice is the big concern. overnight into tomorrow. >> we have team coverage of conditions on the ground and in the air. we begin with doug. roads can be a little tricky. >> they could be tonight into early tomorrow. we'll have to clear out. the storm system does continue to clear out. storm team 4 radar showing us nothing going on in our region. but 12 hours ago, man, we were inundated. heavy snow toward the west and now we're watching as another system tries to move in. in between our temperatures will be dropping.

what did we see? gaithersburg, about 1.2. we told you d.c. would report a trace and that's what they got. a trace of snow. 4.0 in the winch area. and 14 inches back toward romney, west virginia. a big difference dependsing on where you were. shows us what you got. the temperatures on the cold side. 34, gaithersburg, 34, rockville. but we will go below freezing in many areas. maybe even the upper 20s. that's why we're talking about ice in the early morning hours. give yourself some extra time when you step out the door. plus your black friday forecast in a minute. >> let's look at the roads out there now. this is i-270 near clarksburg. the traffic is pretty light. you can see the roads wet and a similar story on i-66. centreville, virginia. ramps and bridges, potentially slippery tonight into tomorrow

morning. now at 270 with more on the conditions out there. >> reporter: let me tell you, the conditions are wet. we drove from d.c. to maryland. different areas. went through several areas and the roadways are wet. it is slick in some spots. tomorrow, some drivers tell us they're leaving early. trucks are out on thanksgiving eve. dumping salt on wet roads in gaithersburg, maryland. the will temperatures could dip below freezing tonight. >> definitely a little slippery. >> reporter: jessica decided to fill up. >> you can feel the temperature dropping. anybody still out tonight needs to be a little more careful than they would normally be. >> reporter: tonight thousands of drivers hit the roads for thanksgiving. it is already slick in some spots. watch out for black ice. >> i hope it doesn't freeze. i know lots of people are traveling and i want everyone to be safe. >> we plan on traveling tomorrow. up toward new york. hopefully it won't be too bad. >> this crew drops out at train

station parking lots. >> jessica tells me the cold is a good thing on thanksgiving. >> this keeps everyone indoors and the family close together. >> isn't that nice? we talked to some drivers and they say they cannot wait to get to the table and have the turkey with their families. happy thanksgiving. news4. >> thanks. now more on the impact of the weather on travel tomorrow. especially north of here. chris? >> yeah. the airlines have kansas he told about 600 flights but only about 34 since 6:00 tonight which suggests maybe getting a little better out there. but a lot depends on whether you're driving or flying and where you need to go. let's take a look now. it has been rough going through parts of west virginia and pennsylvania where the roads are slick and slushy. a tractor-trailer collided with a car on interstate 476 about, 30 mile north of philadelphia. one person has been hurt and that tractor-trailer is blocking three out of the four lanes of

traffic. traffic has been somewhat better than expected on i-95 north. especially in maryland and delaware. but new jersey is enforcing speed restrictions on most of its major highways. let's take a live look at reagan national. the delays have dropped to about 29 minutes. and dulles was about the same. in fact, most of the major airports on the east coast were experiencing delays of less than 45 minutes. the one exception was newark, where inbound flights were being forced to delay their takeoff for more than two hours because some of low clouds in new jersey. bottom line, somewhere around 46 million americans will travel between tonight and sunday. 90% will be by car. although sunday is expected to be the heaviest day of the year for air travel. >> thank you. new at 11:00, police are looking for two women in question, a stabbing outside the gallery place metro station. it ham about 8:00 tonight. investigators stay victim went

into the station for help. prompting one of the entrances to temporarily close. we're told the stabbing did not happen at the metro station but rather outside. so far no arrests and no word yet on the victim's condition. we've learned that a soldier who lived in maryland has died in afghanistan. sergeant major wardell turner was killed when a car packed with explosives hit his vehicle in kabul. he is from the eastern shore. he joined the army in 1993 and served deployments in bosnia and iraq before he went to afghanistan earlier this year. he was 48 years old and already the winner of a bronze star and the purple heart. he is survived by a wife and five children. with snow on the ground in the holiday weekend getting underway, the streets of ferguson, missouri, are relatively quiet. and it is giving residents a chance to reflect and to start to pick up the pieces. jennifer has more from ferguson.

>> reporter: protests in ferguson dwindling with the holiday and a messy, wintry storm moving in. but there have been too many sleepless nights for people here in ferguson, business owners like queen barns especially worried. the salon she spent her life savings on as a retired teacher in the path of a fire early tuesday. not knowing if it would be there at daybreak, she was frustrated and disappointed. >> i don't approve this behavior but after a while, some people think they can only respond with violence. >> reporter: there is another side. people responding with kindness. >> i'm trying the help sweep the sidewalks of ferguson because people were windows without cleaning up after themselves. >> reporter: after the first night of chaos, more than 2,000 national guard troops backed up police and put an end to the clashes before they turned destructive. and before barns' salon burned. >> we didn't burn, we didn't get

looted. >> reporter: there is still damage here. >> i have to think about my safety and my children's safety and them having to live their lives. >> reporter: damaged the psyche of a community reeling from three months of turmoil. nbc news, ferguson, missouri. the family of a boy in cleveland, ohio, who was shot and killed by the police. they say their son's death could have been avoided. surveillance video shows 12-year-old which tamir rice outside holding what looked like a gun. officers asked him to put his hands up. within two seconds of pulling up next to him, one of the officers shot and kill the boy because they say it looked like he was reaching for his waist band. we know now that he had a pellet gun. in the statement the parents said their son could still be alive if the police hadn't reacted so quickly. roads back open after a

jogger was hit by a car and became pinned underneath it. it happened near 28th. paramedics rushed the man to the hospital in very serious condition. it is not clear if he ran into traffic or if ted right-of-way. . an ebola vaccine is being tested at the national institutes of health in bethesda and it is getting some promising results. a paper just released says the first volunteers have shown signs of developing antibodies that fight the deadly ebola virus. some of them built up those munlts within four weeks of receiving the vaccine. researchers say the volunteers have not developed any serious side effects. president obama plans to visit nih next week. as scientists race to find a way to prevent the spread of ebola, the number of cases continues on rise in west africa. the world health organization says 600 people have been infected in just the last week. more than half of them in sierra

leone. cases appear to be on the rise in that country. nearly 16,000 people have contracted the virus in west africa. of those, more than 5,600 have died. the guardian of a 15-year-old d.c. girl is demanding answers after police say they found tarnlg naked inside a car with a teacher's aide. carla norde tried to hide her face day. she worked at d.c. high school. she has been in a sexual relationship with the student since september. the teen's legal guardian said that the girl is a special education student. >> hurt, i was sending my child to school for her to learn, to stay out of harm's way, for her to be protected. and right now, i can't find no words to how i feel. >> the guardian said she did talk to school administrators about what happened. but she says they couldn't give her much of an explanation.

norde has been put on administrative leave. a special showcase to honor the form he d.c. mayor marion bar barry. that's where he stopped to grab some food after he was released from the hospital saturday night. ward 8 resident byron ran into him and snapped this picture just hours before the former mayor died. today mayor vincent gray and others signed a condolence book at the wilson building where marion barry will lie in repose next thursday on. friday, his body will be moved in a public procession that will end at temple of praise church in southeast and go through all the wards in the city. saturday morning, a public funeral at the washington convention center, followed by a private burial. next, a tradition of service. local volunteers included the obamas, preparing thousands of

holiday meals. >> reporter: 200 pumpkin pies. that's what they're prepping tonight, ready to serve. and a new thanksgiving tradition. shoppers lined up for deals. the former ceo who says stores should not be open tomorrow.

people are already camping out for the deals at best buy. we found at least three tents set up. campers say they want first dibs on the big screen tvs in there. best buy is open from 5:00 p.m.

to 1:00 a.m. on thanksgiving day and reopens again at 8:00 a.m. on black friday. if you plan to get a head start on those deals, more stores are opening earlier than ever on thanksgiving day. best buy, toys "r" us and jcpenney all plan to open at 5:00 p.m., one hour earlier than target, sears, kohl's and macy's which all waited in the 8:00 p.m. last year. some say it doesn't make sense to open on thanksgiving day. he said opening on a holiday just means double pay for workers. hundreds of volunteers are donating their time tonight and tomorrow to make sure that thousands of families in virginia get a hot meal. it's a project that dates back 30 years. jackie bensen reports from arlington. >> got to get the legs out. >> a lot of labor and even more love.

that's the best description of how a beautiful thanksgiving feast has been served for more than three decades at the knights of columbus in arlington. it includes 300 turkeys, cooked and donated by members of the fellowship and by arlington residents who have learned about the event on list serve. >> we have two families. the galvins, they work pretty much year round making the contact with all the various facilities. >> reporter: the turkey will be complimented by side dishes is that desserts including hundreds of fresh pastries donated by another institution. from the hand decorated place mats, the linens, the cards made by local school children, is design to make hundreds of people, homeless and others who might be get a hot meal on thanksgiving, feel like holland guests. >> they long, the people who came to dinner, that they were loved. >> reporter: as much of the prep is done the night before but

many will come back at 4:00 a.m. to complete the operations. some are third generations knights of columbus families. >> john and his son over here. it is pretty family oriented. >> reporter: when this banquet hall is fill with people enjoying the delicious food prepared here tonight, the people will not be aware of the weeks and months that went into planning. but they will feel the love. jackie bensen, news4. the first family continual their thanksgiving tradition of service today. the president and mrs. obama were joined by their daughters sasha and malia and mrs. obama's mother. they volunteered and read for the city, packing and distributing meals. the president also dished out warm thanksgiving wishes to each recipient, helped vulnerable residents with food, clothing and other services. so you're the man of the hour, doug. everybody wants to know what is it going to do overnight and in

the morning. >> have very good news wex some new information. i was looking at the latest computer models. and it is only a matter of one or two degrees. these were the numbers. this is very close to what our numbers were last night. talking about how much snow we can see. less than an inch of snow around the i-95 corridor. we did see some accumulation on the grassy surfaces but the roads were just fine. one to three inches. the big area was back toward the areas of elevation. three to nine inches, some areas, even over a foot of snow. the ski resorts. ready, set, go. heavy snow on opening day. they've been over the last couple weeks getting this mountain ready to go for the big holiday scenic.

the big thanksgiving holiday season. look at that. almost a foot of snow. a little powder across that region. so get the skis ready. it is time. tomorrow, liberty opens, white tail, that's right. winter is here. look at the number. noble around freezing. do i expect to see some colder numbers. i don't think we'll hit the 20s in most locations. watch what happens when we widen out. our one storm system moves out. then the next storm system. this one has some rain and snow associated with it too. thunder their one, however, will go just down to our south and take most of the moisture south with it. will we see something with it? maybe a stray shower or a stray flurry. that's it. overnight lows, 34 in the city. i'm not worried about the city at all.

the roads won't be quite as slick but they could be slick in some locations and that's why the forecast is on the moderate side for the retrees and some rather cool numbers. high temperatures, only around 41 degrees. for those people camping out. 39 degrees will be the high temperature during the day. and with that we'll see rather sunny and cold conditions. we will see windchills in the 20s, i think during the day. 58 degrees by sunday. and look at monday. a high of 65 degrees. monday looking very nice and really, the weekend looking great, too. we can dry out. we'll have a good time saturday and sundays doing whatever you're doing. next tuesday and wednesday, another chance of showers. maybe a snow shower moves in on tuesday but not a big deal. >> all right. rg 3 benched.
