we're seeing some incredibly pictures tonight of a three-alarm fire in prince georges county. i'm chris lawrence. >> i'm erika gonzalez. fire shot out of an apartment window and 27 people had to find another place to stay tonight. derrick ward reports from temple hills. >> resident cell phone video and firefighters video captured the early moments as the first firefighters arrived at the lin hill conned min numz. just moments before other residents had taken their fates into their own hands. >> they observed occupants of the building hanging from the fifth floor balcony, swinging themselves down to the fourth floor and then down to the third floor. >> a good samaritan got some to the ground. others got out under less harrowing circumstances. cassandra and her nieces made a

last-minute run to the store before dinner. >> we seen the smoke and then we came back and this is what we come back to. >> a fire, apparently, with plenty of fuel from the apartment where it's believed to have started. >> they got inside to the second floor unit and found collier's mansion conditions, excessively filled with stuff. >> firefighters would evacuate the entire building. thanksgiving dinner would be delayed. >> the dinner is actually on the stove. it's still on the stove. >> luckily the stove is out. >> all the residents are accounted for. miraculously none of those that were swinging from balconies were injured. couple of them were checked out. >> the plan for family to spend a warm thanksgiving inside went up in smoke. >> i'm thankful they are all safe. >> the cause of the fire remains

under investigation, but part of this building win uninhabitable for some time. luckily no one was seriously injured. also new tonight, d.c. police are trying to figure out what caused a deadly crash on alabama avenue. police say a man walked into the street where he was hit by several cars. he was filled and police had to shut down the road for hours in the area around 18th street southeast. >> right now, many shoppers are taking advantage of early black friday deals. montgomery mall in bethesda opened at 6:00 thursday evening. mall officials expect to see 100,000 shoppers in the next 24 hours. plus, keep an eye out for the merry makers. they're going to surprise shoppers with unexpected acts of kindness, including treats and some coffee as well. >> shoppers have been out all day and night. some even skipping thanksgiving dinner to wait in line for the best deals. there's a lot to choose from and

then out along 50. this is all part of a bigger system that right now is making its way in across our area. and that system is bringing through much colder air. what's that going to mean for your black friday? >> afternoon, only in the upper 30s. let you know what to expect for the weekend in a minute. >> thanks, doug. families were just sitting down for a thanksgiving meal when shots were fired in this quite columbia, maryland neighborhood. investigators say a masked man walked up to an apartment, banged on the door and started shooting when someone opened it. a man inside was hit several times and had to be flown to the hospital. so far, no one is in custody. investigators say they don't think the shooting was random. >> speed and alcohol, police say a dangerous combination of the two caused a car to plummet 75 feet into a creek. the driver crossed a median, and

one passenger was eject when the car crashed into the creek. she's in critical condition. the driver and another passenger, refused medical treatment. >> the man accused of carjacking is now in custody. we learn, he's served time for a similar crime before. police arrested darian robinson last night in baltimore county. investigators say he carjacked a woman two weeks ago at the vienna metro station and forced her to withdraw cash from a number of atms before letting her go. a check of his criminal background reveals he served time in maryland back in 1996 for carjacking. this week's violence has given way to a fragile police in ferguson, house. but the grand jury's decision did leave scars. but there's also reason to be thankful. >> no holiday parades in ferguson. the main street, the scene of so

much violence earlier this week, still a no-go area. overnight, only a small crowd outside police headquarters. >> there's a little bit of tension at this moment. >> elsewhere in the country, at least 145 arrested and released in los angeles. and 35 taken into custody in oakland, protesting the grand jury decision not to charge officer darren wilson for killing michael brown. >> wilson's attorney say he's facing death threats and may never be able to serve as a police officer again. >> he's careful. extremely careful. necessarily so. but you have to continue to try to live your life. >> while on this holiday, ferguson is grateful for calm. >> i have to reach out and let people know there's hope. >> reporter: business has been off 80%. >> i had about 17 employees. now i'm down to six. >> you had to lay them off? jump temporarily? >> i pray it's temporary.

to run near a float. the group was organized on twitter using the hash tag, stop the parade. >> president obama celebrated thanksgiving and throwback thursday. today he tweeted the word thankful and shared an older family photo. the president called thanksgiving his favorite family holiday, because, quote, more than any other, it is uniquely american. he also spent part of the day in the oval office, calling american troops to thank them. the president called service members from the army, navy, air force, marines, and coast guard. and he got on a conference call to troops deployed in west africa. >> thousands of american troops celebrated the holidays overseas. this is video from the "uss carl vinson." and in afghanistan, u.s. soldiers enjoyed a traditional thanksgiving meal at the dining hall in kabul. >> a thanksgiving scare for one

firefighter in prince georges county are taking care of this little guy after he wandered into their station last night to escape the cold. the staff at st. joseph's fire station in spring dale are calling him gizmo.

they think he has a family, but he doesn't have any tags or a microchip. this morning, firefighters went door to door to find his owner, but so far, no luck. if you know who he belongs to, please call the fire station 806. gizmo will be staying with a firefighter until his family is found. the ice is already so thick in montana, may have helped save two people when their suv lost control. their vehicle hit a slick spot and slid right on to a frozen pond. but the ice kept the suv from falling through and gave rescuers access to the people inside. they were shaken up, but not hurt. in the northeast, people are digging out from a foot of snow last night into this morning. and right now, some are still without power. a layer of heavy, wet snow, blanketing new england. >> the main roads are fine.

back roads are a little slick. >> most of the roads cleared in time for turkey dinner. but thousands spent at least part of the holiday in the dark. 200,000 without power in new hampshire. 100,000 in maine. utility crews worked 18-hour shifts to turn the lights back on. >> we've spend a lot of holidays together as a company. people just accept it. everyone understood they had to report for work this morning. >> it's sad it has to be that way. i'm thankful i'm not one of the 200,000. >> at the airports things slowly returned to normal, but some were still catches flights after 750 cancellations and nearly 5,000 delays wednesday. >> so glad to go home for the holidays. >> if you thought wednesday was crowded, just wait. this sunday will be the busiest flying day of the year. >> i got to tell you, when you look at what they were dealing with up in new england, it makes

you think, we damaged a bullet here. >> yeah, it was not nearly as bad. it was beautiful to see a new snowflakes the other day. just impressive it got here that early. and then, things will change yet again. >> and that's the way we are right now in the month of november, up and down. very cold air, and once again, some snow coming down in parts of the area. a couple of snow showers today. this was 270, a little bit earlier this evening. another little batch of snow came through. and we've seep a few of those from time to time. now, what are we dealing with? cold temperatures. we are on the cold side. 39 degrees the current number. that windchill sitting at 32 degrees, winds have begun to pick up from the northwest and those will act to cool things down. as we move through the overnight hour. 34 in martinsburg. windchills in the 20s and they'll stay that way through early tomorrow morning, even into the teens as you step out

the front door. storm team 4 radar not showing anything now except for one area between cull pepper and fredericksburg. all coming from a storm system across the great lakes. these were in lake effect showers. this system bringing in colder air. another system, it's snow, but it's a warm front, behind that we'll see warmer air. overnight on the chilly side. 29 in la plaita, and winchester around 26 degrees. tomorrow afternoon, we'll be on the cold side for sure. 39 in d.c., 37 down towards la platea. the windchills will be in the 20s for most of the day tomorrow. i'll be down at reston town center. come say hi. we have the holiday parade kicks off around 10:00.
