she's been talking to shoppers about the discounts up for grabs today. >> doing very well here. look behind me, richard. you can see, it's a lot busier than when we were talking early this morning. lots people shopping, but weren't seeing long lines of crowds. things have picked up in the last couple of hours. we've been talking to shoppers. they all are looking for discounts. and they're getting them. >> it's 84.79 is your total. >> reporter: they came in search of bargains. >> three for three at bath and body works. you buy three, you get three free. lots of free stuff at victoria's secret. >> my best was urban outfitters. i got a shirt for $4. >> reporter: and they found them. >> marked down to 79. can't beat it. >> reporter: at the springfield town center, people got a jump on their holiday shopping. >> it was pretty hectic. it was crazy. so many people. >> reporter: the mall and many

of its stores opened at 6:00 p.m. thanksgiving. and people shopped through the night and right on into black friday. >> we did 28 hours straight. or we will when we close tonight at 10:00. >> reporter: in the predawn hours, it got pretty quiet. so no lines at the register. >> it's very relaxful, you know? it's stress free. >> reporter: the markdown signs are everywhere. if you want to get best deals, check the circulars before you hit the mall. some stores will also text you coupons. and then there are the door buster deals. >> it's a nice little necklace and earring set. originally $200. today it is $29. nice steal there. of course, every lady's favorite. we have cashmere. originally $139. today, it's on sale for $39.99 this morning. >> reporter: those door buster deals are time sensitive. that one ends at 1:00 this afternoon. if you don't have a coupon, when you go to the checkout, just ask

they shut out shoppers. some of those shoppers got frustrated and left. that was the whole design of this whole thing. as protesters forcefully staged this event on black friday. to do exactly that. hit the retailer where it hurts. >> this is what democracy looks like! >> reporter: walmart workers and their supporters shut down part of h street right in front of the entrance. this is where association charlet has worked for eight months. she joined the call for higher wages. $15 minimum wage and full-time work. >> i mean, you have to get better pay in order for it to make a difference. it's not really about the full time. it's about the pay you make. i still support two kids. so there's still -- would be better if i could make more money.

>> this is what democracy looks like. >> reporter: the mood changed quickly when some protesters went inside. security shut the doors and escorted them out. >> to the sergeant in there, i had to remain the sergeant that he was reacting just like they reacted in ferguson, missouri. >> reporter: walmart released a statement that reads, in part, the crowds are made up of paid union demonstrators and they are not representative of our 1.3 million associates across the country. it goes on to say, it's unfortunate that this group attempts to disrupt the holiday spirit to push their agenda. after today's strike, workers go back on the job. and charlet fears retaliation. >> after this protest, i'll make sure i carry my pen and paper so if anything -- if i'm treated differently in any type of way, then i was treated before i went on strike, i'm going to write -- i'm going to make sure i jot everything down. >> reporter: now, even though

>> now to a developing story in texas. the man also targeted a courthouse and the consulate there. officers searched the building and the suspect's home for explosives. no word what they found yet. police aren't sure what the motive was, aside from the gunman, no one else was hurt. a man accused of targeting women in northern virginia is in jail. metro transit police arrested him wednesday night in baltimore county. investigators say he car jacked a woman two weeks ago, then forced her to withdraw cash from several atms before he finally let her go at the new carrollton station. with looked into his criminal background. we found he served some time in maryland for a car jacking in 1996. right now, angie growth is

right now, people across the northeast are still digging out from that thanksgiving eve snowstorm. we just checked. almost 345,000 customers from maine down to west virginia are without power. more than 180,000 of those outages are in new hampshire. this is the fourth largest power outage in that state's history. this morning, two boys are recovering after being accidentally buried in a pile of snow. the boys are 9 and 11 years old. they were billion a snow for the in a parking lot yesterday. a snowplow was coming through and pushed a pile of snow on top of the boys. police say the plow driver couldn't see them and didn't know he had even covered them. the boys are cousins. they were trapped under six or even up to seven feet of snow for hours in those subfreezing temperatures. then a police officer came along and spotted something out of place.

>> and at that point, he just figured he'd take a couple digs in there and he saw the boot of one of the children. >> they went to all the neighbors asking for shovels. the neighbors was coming out. >> those nearby residents did help out and police got the boys out safely. both were taken to the hospital for exposure to the cold. they're expected to be okay. there's more fallout from the sex assault accusations against bill cosby. his alma mater, university of massachusetts am hearse, is cutting ties with him. more than a dozen women claim cosby sexually assaulted them or tried to rape them years ago. cosby has not been charged and won't comment on these accusations. his attorney says these claims are unsub stustantiated and the from 40, even 50 years ago. a group of protesters trying to stop the macy's thanksgiving day pair r parade. seven people arrested for disorderly conduct. police say one protester tried to run toward a float on the

parade route. the group was upset with this week's michael brown grand jury decision. they organized yesterday's protests through twitter using #stoptheparade. if your holiday shopping list includes something with four wheels, you picked the right time to buy. the fastest growing day for car sales. there's something you should know. nbc's toms could spell yes reports. >> reporter: nationwide, 2014 has been a year of full showrooms and surging sales for car dealers. something else much bigger and longer loans. while loans used to average three years, today the average runs 5 1/2 years. even longer for theresa, who just signed a six year loan at 2% to put her college son into a 2011 toyota tundra. >> we wanted a good product, something that would last him a long time with a nice payment. >> reporter: why the longer loans? to begin with, good cars are

simply more expensive today. the low rates are making it possible for drivers to have more expensive cars. the average car loan is now $27,000. with good credit, 5 1/2 year loans are averaging 3.2%. total cost of financing, $2,500. for customers with weaker credit who pay a 5% rate, the cost of financing jumped to $4,000. the good news, outside kansas city, toyota dealer scott adams says cars are also lasting longer than ever before. >> people are keeping their car past the length of the loan no matter how long the loan is. >> reporter: the risk some people are buying more car than they can afford. >> if you're the kind of consumer who's likely going to want to be back in the market and, you know, two or three years and get something new, chances are you'll likely be upside down when you buy that next car. >> reporter: cars depreciate the minute they're driven often the lot. a big reason many experts advise putting down a bigger

downpayment and sticking to three or four year loans. tom k tom costello. washington airport could be facing serious financial trounl next year. according to "the washington post," dulless is seeing is less domestic flight traffic. experts say if it continues, some carriers might move their business to other hu. that could have serious repercussions on northern virginia's economy. dulles generates more than $1.2 million in tax revenue. this morning, there are some calls to lower the tolls on the intercounty connector. an annual holiday tradition kicks off. it's the first night of zoo lights. this year, more than 500,000 environmentally friendly led lights are transforming the zoo into a winter wonderland after dark. not only will the trees have lights but animal figures will be decorated with lights. the zoo will be illuminated from

of an unarmed teenager. one major retailer was forced to close its doors because of a threat of a protest. nbc's casey nolan has more now from missouri. >> reporter: on a day when more and more retailers advertise door busters, the walmart in ferguson locked up like it might actually happen. >> i thought there was going to be a long line. >> reporter: but instead of shoppers, a line of national guard troops and troopers from the highway patrol stood watch. walmart closed its ferguson store wednesday night when word spread it was a target for planned protests. and kept it closed thanksgiving day. >> yeah, it's a success. they ain't making no money tonight. not here. >> reporter: so now what? >> we got to go shut another one day. >> reporter: the handful of protesters who did show up said bridgeton was their next target. shoppers there had only to push through the crowd. reports on social media claimed protests disrupted a st. charles walmart. >> the decision that was made, i didn't like the verdict either. but that's not going to stop

from what had happened and what ya'll doing right now. we need to come together and make everything known when we come out here and vote. >> that was casey nolan reporting. lawyers from darren wilson say the ferguson police officer will probably never be a law enforcement officer again. wilson's lawyer says his client knows he has to go back to school and find a new career to provide for his family. >> he's careful. extremely careful. necessarily so. but you have to continue to try to live your life. >> the violent protests that erupted earlier this week seems to have calmed down a bit over the holiday. police say there were no arrests overnight. we're working to learn more about two stabbings. the first happened before midnight on hayes street. he's expected to be okay. about an hour later, a woman was stabbed on savannah street in southeast. no word on her condition yet.

also right now, firefighters are trying to figure out the cause of a massive fire that had some people scaling down the building to escape. the fire broke out in the middle of dinner at the building along good hope avenue in temple hills. that fire on the second floor sent thick smoke throughout the eighth story building. it was so bad, some residents actually jumped off the fifth floor balcony. now one was hurt but many were forced to spend the night somewhere else. it is on display at the wilson billion riguilding right. you can stop by and sign it. that's where barry will lie in repose for 24 hours next thursday. on friday, there will be a public procession that ends at temple of praise church in southeast. saturday morning, a public funeral at the washington convention center followed by a

commitment promoting adoption. all of us here are so excited to hear the wonderful stories of the new families created in the national adoption day. barbara harrison was there as host for the 28th year. >> we just adopted our number eight baby. it was a wonderful birth. no contractions. >> reporter: she was one of 38 children adopted at the 28th adoption day in court. i had the honor once again of introducing all of the children and their families to the family court judges who gather each year for this special event. >> we saw him on wednesday's child. >> reporter: our wednesday's child program was credited for making a lot of prospective families aware of the children who are waiting for permanent loving homes. >> we had our son like him. he passed. we had a big hole in our hearts.

special adoption hot line. the number is 1-88-to-adopt-me. there are always concerns when going under the knife, but does plastic surgery become more risky the older you get? the doctor is joining us this morning with some new research on patients who are more likely to have issues the older they get. there's this new study, right? >> interesting study from vanderbilt. basically concludes that no, older patients, those 70 and 80s, really don't have a higher complication rate. for cosmetic procedures. >> how many people in their 70s are getting their -- >> the baby boomers are getting older and they're professionally being anni ac and they want to look as young as they feel. >> what are the procedures? >> this study looked at cosmetic procedures. we're talking facelifts, eye lifts, breast reductions, breast lifts, tummy tucks, those types

things. >> we've got some picture. let us know what's the age group of this woman we're seeing. >> this lady's in her 70s. she's very active. >> were there me concerns at her age? >> this study showed that the statistics for complication rate for both patients over 70 and those under 70 in their 50s was about 2%. so very acceptable and very similar. >> so does -- >> here's the eye lift. this is a gentleman, number one, you probably can't see because of his hooded eyes. he has a chance to perhaps get his insurance to help him with this case. here's a lady who just is very active. she's getting married again. a lot of baby boomers, 50% of them are divorced so they're out there looking for spouses too. now she feels like she looks. again, this is a filler lift.

basically not surgery but using filler as botox, chemical peeling to improve the looks. >> does the type of procedure mitigate the risk? >> absolutely. this is not surgery but again it's a malady of older patients. so yes, procedures longer than six hours really do have a higher -- not only in older people but younger people too. they specifically look at oxygen fairians, people who are over 80, again about a 2% complication rate. the same as if you were in your 50s. a lot of this has to do with new surgical techniques that have improved. >> we're talking black friday, gift giving. plastic surgery. is that the gift that people -- how do you bring that up? >> carefully, delicately. >> something you tell them? >> there are gift certificates available for, you know, $500 or $1,000 for fillers or things
