live desk. but first, grab your coat heading out the door this morning with chilly temperatures returning to the region. but you could see some sunshine return in the day ahead. storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal has the outdoor forecast. good morning, angie and aaron. definitely cooler today by 5 degrees. what you need as you step out the door this morning, a jacket and scarf. plus the sunglasses as morning clouds give way to afternoon sunshine. the 24-hour temperature change shows temperatures about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than they were this time yesterday. so you're already noticing that chill when you step outside during these early morning hours. some light rain falling in extreme parts of southern maryland. back near fredericksburg even light snow. this activity continues in the same areas for the rest of the morning hours. elsewhere is dry. by 10:00 a.m. the d.c. metro area and areas to the north are partly to mostly cloudy skies, a temperature of 38. chilly with a temperature only near 40 today.

plane. this is in the same area where the plane was last reported in the java sea. news4's kristen wright at the scene with the latest developments. >> reporter: the indonesian president is heading to surbaya to meet with the families of the missing passengers. family members right now are watching the new developments up fold on live television in indonesia. and they are devastated. search teams also believe they have found wreckage of the plane in the water. those are the family members there. the pieces of debris they found are red and white, the colors of the jet. 162 people were on board airasia flight 8501. at the live desk i'm kristen wright. >> the american teams are joining the search effort for the plane.

the "uss sampson" is joining the international search team that includes 30 ships, 15 planes and 7 helicopters. at least five countries are involved in the search. today a charles county corporal will be laid to rest. 30-year-old corporal jamel was killed last week and he'll be laid to rest later today. and a new report is being released for the officers who died in 2014. 126 officers died this year. two dozen more than last year. however, that number is more than 40 fewer than three years ago. the report is released twice a year. a new shooting overnight in d.c. the fourth in two days. police say the shooting on this street in the northeast was not deadly however the other three

murders is due to a recent spike in d.c. since christmas eve. the average is a murder a day. neighborhood commissioners were spoken to in some of the hardest-hit areas. >> we have a number of fear in the uptick of ins dentss and the nature of the incidents. ? now the commissioners say if you're concerned you can engage with police. officers hold a meeting every month with their police service area which you can look up on your phone. right now you can still put out your trash for pickup in montgomery county. we told you about the waste collector strike that affects more than 60,000 of you. montgomery county says if you put your trash out by 7:00 it will be picked up. and that gives you an hour as of right now. workers for unity disposal and recycling are striking because they say they deserve better working conditions and higher pay. in the day ahead maryland governor-elect larry hogan will anno of high leaders in his

off the all bane coast. crews rescued 400 people aboard the sinking ferry. the rescue operation took 24 hours and ten people died. the death toll is now raised to 11. he was shot in the head but today 9-year-old jayden haskell is leaving the hospital. this is a site his mom never thought she would see again. jayden was on a playground in southeast d.c. when a stray bullet hit him in the head. they believe it's a miracle he's alive. >> i am just overwhelmed. my son has done a remarkable recovery thanks to children's hospital. the concern for jayden's mother now is returning back to the old neighborhood. jayden just wants to live somewhere safe. >> a deadly fire leaves one woman dead. the fire broke out late monday afternoon and the first crews on

the scene saw flames shooting from the roof and then they found 70-year-old betty-ann davis on the first floor. firefighters pulled her out of the house but it was too late. and a dog and cat inside the home also died in the blaze. it took 60 firefighters to put out the fire and still this morning no word on what caused it. a virginia congressman now reacting to the news the house majoritya blogg said republican steve scalice spoke to the white nationalist grp back in 2002. he said he only spoke about fiscal issues to the group. on twitter the northern virginia democrat jerry connolly wrote, quote, no politician should ever find himself very herself addressing white supremacist organization except to tell them to go to hell end quote. happening today, the new york city mayor and police union will meet face to face. a meeting with five unions hopes

to resolve the issues. the rift between the two sides escalated since the ambush-style killing of the two police officers. recent days the mayor was booed at the police graduation and the unions criticized him for being too sympathetic for protesters demonstrating against police brutality. one suggested the mayor's stance contributed to the officers murders. we are working for you to keep you safe and secure. be careful if you pick up a phone number that you don't recognize. thieves are using technology in a recent spike in phone scams. they say the caller's make a fake phone number pop up on the caller i.d. and when you pick it up they claim to be a family member in trouble and want you to send money online or over the phone. coming up on 18 after the hour right now we now know the name of a fairfax county teenager killed in a crash. steve carballo was set to

graduate in the spring. he was killed in a crash this weekend. police say the driver of that car that he was in swerved to avoid a deer. they slammed into a tree in franconia and steve was killed. the driver survived. a dramatic rescue caught on camera with crews pulling a person trapped inside this suv that ended up in a canal in arizona. it's unclear how that suv landed on its side in the water there. firefighters had to break open the windshield and pulled one person out. that person was then hoisted up to a ladder. no word on that person's injuries. well, taxpayers can start filing returns in january despite a last-minute tax law. earlier this month congress passed a bill extending more than 50 tax breaks that had expired. the new laws will allow taxpayers to claim the break millions will file their returns in the first few weeks of the year to get the quick refund. the i.r.s. was able to issue most tax refunds within 21 days

high temperature today of 42. we'll hit it at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon. by noon, partly to mostly cloudy skies for most of us. then mostly sunny skies headed into the afternoon. 5:00 p.m. a temperature of 39 degrees. definitely chilly out there. tomorrow cooler. a high of 39. but plenty of sunshine throughout the day. it will be a little breezy at times tomorrow. so we'll add a little additional chill to the air for our new year's eve day. new year's day, thursday a high of 42 degrees. plenty of sunshine. on friday clouds increase with a high of 44. for the weekend, a chance of rain saturday as well as sunday. high temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. rain is looking likely at some point this weekend. the best chance that you're dealing with rain is actually going to be saturday afternoon, evening, into the overnight hours of sunday. the timing is still uncertain. we'll keep an eye on that. melissa, unfortunately you're keeping an eye on an accident this morning. brand new crash in fairfax.

just heard about this one. fairfax county parkway between monument drive and route 50. only one northbound lane getting by. we have a four-car crash here. a lot of debris in the roadway. we'll send the chopper to this to see what it looks like from the air. northbound at prince william parkway, i got a facebook message saying northbound lanes is seeing a blockage because of a semi that blew a tire. could be slow passing that area. 270 at montrose road all the folks headed to the spur no problems there. same thing looking at prince george's county in and out of town looking quite good. a tad slow on branch but a little bit of volume there. the orange line delay at west falls church delays in both directions because of the signal problem. more on this crash in fairfax coming up. thank you. 6:22. the tall claims victory over the u.s. and allies in afghanistan. the u.s. and nato formally ended the war in afghanistan on thursday with the u.s. changing its mission.

richard jordan is live on capitol hill with the latest. >> reporter: presint obama calls this a responsible conclusion to the war, but the taliban says it has defeated u.s. and nato forces after 13 years of having troops on the ground there in afghanistan. the taliban saying there's been no us is tapeable changes that have come from that longest war in american history. now u.s. government officials, the obama administration they are dismissing the claim, but it is true that there has been a spike in violence in the past year in afghanistan. more violence than ever since the start of the war back in 2001. about 4,000 afghan soldiers and police officers were killed just in the past 12 months. also many civilians lost their lives because of the taliban attacks. so even though this is an end to the combat mission, there will still be american troops in afghanistan for several months maybe even up to two years. they will be in a support role working with the afghan military there advising them and training

them. there will be several troops here along with senator john mccain saying this is not the end of the mission in afghanistan. moren 2,000 americans lost their lives fighting that war in afghanistan. and mccain says that that sacrifice should not be in vain. >> richard jordan live on the hill. . frightening, isn't it? listen to the wind there. what you're looking at is video from inside a deadly tornado in southern mississippi. a man started recording on his cell phone when this happened last week and then dropped it and it flew off when the storm got too intense. when he finally found it later, he discovered to find it rolling the entire time. the tornado killed five people. fema is evaluating all the damage. you may celebrate in the snow if your new year's plans involve las vegas.

snow in las vegas usually has terrible odds but it may happen. 340,000 people are expected to pack the strip in las vegas' downtown fremont area for the festivities. in the past 14 years the fireworks from the hotels have been canceled once due to high winds. the newly-married couple is remembering a call on their wedding day from the commander in chief. >> yes, this happened about 20 minutes after their wedding ceremony. listen to what he said. >> congratulations on your wedding. i feel terrible nobody told us -- >> the details were pretty set. then i got excited. >> so the president was apologizing because their wedding had to be moved because he wanted to golf. the couple said it was actually for the best. their new location had a better view that where they were originally supposed to get married with the president's golf schedule. >> they were told ahead of time that weather and the possibility of the president visiting could

breaking news at this hour involving the search for the missing airasia flight. while you were sleeping we learned search teams found a number of pieces of debris believed to be the airbus plane that went missing on sunday. investigators also revealed they have recovered several body this is morning just six miles from where flight 8501 vanished from radar. th discovery comes as the u.s. warship is headed to that area to help with the search and recovery efforts. we'll have much more on that search in 15 minutes.

university responded to what happened? >> they did not respond. >> bowie state university is not named in the suit and hayes says all the incidents happened off campus. a former university of virginia lacrosse player convicted of killing his girlfriend wants another chance in court. george huguely's lawyers filed another petition for the virginia supreme cou to hear the case. his first appeal to the court was denied in november. huguely is serving 23 years for the murder of yeardley love in 2010. if this is denied he could take the case to the u.s. supreme court. the baltimore ravens giving $400,000 to a foundation created by love's family. the baltimore sun says they gave the love foundation the second largest gift. the foundation focuses on domestic violence and this news comes after the forming running back ray rice knocked out his current wife while engaged. d.c. police are looking for clues in two sexual assault cases. two men robbed and assaulted a

woman sunday night. she claims they attacked her in and alley near kansas and georgia avenues and took off. also a woman was assaulted early sunday morning in the area of 12th street and trenton place in southeast d.c. the suspect in that case had a handgun and then fled the scene in a four-door honda sedan. be on the lookout for fake money in the fredericksburg virginia, area.e freelance star reports ten reports in the last few weeks of people counterfeit money. the police department along with the sheriff's offices in stafford and spotslvania county warn you to be on alert. the artificial turf war is heating up again in prince george's county. lawmakers will try for a third time to bring artificial turfs to all the county schools. they hope to pass that during the next general assembly session, but there's stiff resistance from the environmental groups concerned abt the material that is used to make that fake grass. lawmakers say the schools need

16 before the hour. breaking news overseas just moments ago airasia confirmed debris found off the coast of malaysia is from the missing airplane. kristen walker is live with more. >> reporter: the search for 8501 now appears to be a recovery mission. six bodies were found in the java sea. three have been recovered. the remains are believed to be from the missing plane. the bodies were found just six miles from where the passenger jet disappeared from radar sunday. and we also learned in the past few minutes that airasia is now confirming in a statement that pieces of debris found in the water are, in fact from flight

this morning in downtown annapolis. far he has not appointed key positions like a budget secretary or transportation secretary. he be sworn in on wednesday, january 21st. >> a new report says your home is now worth a lot more if you live in maryland. the state says real estate values went up 23% in prince george's county and 11.5% in montgomery county in the last three years. that's according to "the washington post"." the report says the current median price for a home is $60,000 less than it was at the peak in july 2007 before the housing crisis. workers in several eing maryland will get more in theirpaychecks starting on thursday. landon dowdy is here with more on that ing. >> reporter: angie, good morning you. the minimum wage is going up in 21 states on new year's day. average workers will get another dollar an hour. another 2 million people will benefit from cost of living adjustments. but in maryland and west virginia many will see their

months. take a look at the liberty gas station here in alexandria. 2.39 for a gallon of regular. not bad. but in virginia we could see the price per gallon shoot up 5 cents on january 1st. state lawmakers have been counting on revenue from the internet commerce bill being debated on capitol hill to pay for millions of dollars in road projects here in virginia. but that measure is hung up in congress and hasn't passed. the revenue fallback for state lawmakers is an increase in the tax on wholesale gas, a 5-cent increase. and that is set to happen on the t of the year. now that increase will likely be passed on to consumers meaning higher prices at the pump. >> well, i think if it's for the road improvement it's a good thing. i still would have to pay 5 more cents, though. >> it is cheaper in southern maryland. i will probably fill up over there before i head over this way. >> reporte as you just heard,
