lines now. first at 4 this afternoon a worsening flu season tightens its grip on our area. hello everyone i'm steve handelsman. a north virginia boy has died from the flu. >> his name is joshua justin. many of you already sharing condolences for him. school officials in loudoun coun sent a letter to everybody asking to keep the parents and everyone in his family in his prayers. he had just transferred there a month ago from sanders corner. he died friday evening. he was in the hospital for several days with a high fever and flu symptoms. in a letter to parents school officials said quote his bright smile and caring attitude made a lasting impress on everyone who came to know him. he will be sorely missed. funeral services scheduled for 9:30 in the morning at saints

teresa's church in ashburn. a huge water main break on columbia pike in bailey's crossroads. >> here is some good news. water has been resd to most of the consumers but the clean up could cause a big mess for your evening commute. jackie bensen is down near the break with more. >> reporter: we're in the bailey's crossroads area of fairfax county. we want to show you the efforts going on now. you can see crews from fairfax county working to repair that 16-inch water main. we have some video from today, the break forced column pike to buckle around 10:30 this mog sending water gushing down the street. columbia pike remains shut down between blair and tyler streets. that's causing some traffic backups but they are not significant at this point. they could grow worse as we

approach the evening rush hour. now, we are told repairs are expected to take at least 24 hours to complete and, of course back out live now here at the scene, when this first began there was a concern there would be an extensive area of people who would be without water for quite some time coming up at "news 4 at 5:00" we'll talk to some relieved to now find out the water outage is in a very limited area. live in fairfax county jackie bensen. >> this comes at the same time as an unrelated water problem near pentagon city mall. the entire food court is shut down. move was made because the mall had to shut off water as crews made repairs to the sewage system. the search is on for a missing toddler from frederick, maryland. the little boy's mother said she left him on a stranger's porch in columbus ohio. his name is cameron beckford.

we shared his photo and description on our facebook page this afternoon. during the break take a moment to share his picture to spread the word. his mother left frederick for columbus earlier this month. the boy's father became worried about him and notified police this weekend. police found the mother and her 6-year-old daughter. that mother is in police custody now. she is not charged with a crime. a charles county officer is being remembered today as a caring compassionate man known for random acts of kindness. hundreds attended the funeral service for jamel clagett. chris gordon has more. >> reporter: the funeral procession for corporal jamel clagett includes law enforcement officers from throughout our area and as far away as canada. choppeow the long loin of patrol cars that drove in a procession that began at 8:00 a.m. traveling through waldorf,

residents lining portions of the route to pay t res to the sheriff's deputy that served this community for ten years. a horse drawn carriage bringing the casket to the front of st. peter's church met by an honor guard and taken inside for the funeral service. corporal jamel la get was 30 years old. known for his acts of kindness. on sunday morning december 21st after working the midnight shift he brought breakfast to the officers working in the communict and then drove home to king george virginia. he was killed in a single vehicle crash when his patrol car hit a tree. >> corporal clagett was a very caring and compassionate person and cared about the individuals he worked with. >> we're so distraught over jamel's loss and he was such a close friend and he took care of us like we were family. like we were his sisters. he constantly called to check on

us every night. >> reporter: corporal clagett leaves behind a loving family including a brother that serves with the prince george's county police department. a brother in blood and a brother in blue. from waldorf, maryland chris gordon news4. "news 4 at 4:00" a murder fist in hyattsville after a man was found den in his own home. police got the call just before 8:00 this morning. when they arrived they found the man unresponsive. they pronounced him dead on the scene. poli have yet to release his name. they are working now to determine a suspect and motive. as the sunrises over indonesia right now dozens of military divers are getting ready to search for the bodies of victims and debris from the airasia fligdisappeared over the weekend. several bodies have been recovered from the waters. the u.s. military has sent in a destroyer. the uss samson from the south china sea to help with the

effort. some officials are still holding out hope that crews will find survivors. more on that coming up in the next half hour. right now former president george h.w. bush is out of the hospital and back home. he was released from houston's methodist hospital today. a family spokesperson says he's quote grateful to the doctors and nurses for their superb care. president bush was rushed by ambulance a week ago to the hospital because of breathing problems. he was at the same hospital two years ago for bronchitis. he celebrated his 90th birthday earlier this year by skydiving. it's been years in the making and tomorrow could be the big day. street cars are expected to start running along h street northeast in the district this week. adam tuss explains why the timing of it all is still in question. >> repor d.c. street car coming soon. we have seen these signs here on h street in northeast for a long time but tomorrow might be a day that you want to pay attention

. i'm scott macfarlane at the live desk. police in idaho say a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed a woman inside a walmart there. investigators say the toddler reached into the woman's purse, found the concealed gun and fired. it's unclear if the boy was with the woman at the time. we're working on getting new details and bring them to you as soon as we get them. back to you. there's been praise and also accusations of poor handling coming from family members of the passengers who survived a deadly fire off the coast of italy in the last two days. a greek run ferry that caught fire sunday. a 12-year-old girl rescued from the vessel spoke to reporters as

she waited to be reunited with her mother. her uncle said he appreciated but family members were not getting updates. other passengers are recounting the horror of that ordeal. blaze killed ten people and right now rescuers fear there may still be finding more unaccounted for. more than 400 passengers made it off the ferry but only after waiting more than a day for help as flames engulfed the ship. i was lucky. i was saved after nearly 24 hours. and this is a long time to fill with hope and feel you'll die. >> another survivor from italy says he heard people screaming and running through the ferry's corridors. passen were only given a few instructions and kept in the

dark about how the rescue operations would commence. meanwhile, an italian prosecutor has ordered that badly damaged greek ferry to be towed back to the site of the disaster as part of a criminal investigation. investigators bel migrants who stowed away on the ferryboat may be among the victims. mayor elect will be sworn into office on friday. >> passengers heading to miami spent some unscheduled time in jamaica. the american airlines flight left bogota colombia last night. >> could tell something was wrong because we were descending pretty fast. and then after we stopped descending and about 15 20 minutes later that's when the pilot came over and said that there was a problem and that we were heading towards kingston jamaica. >> no one was injured. american airlines sent another flight and passengers were on their way to miami after about six hours at the airport in kingston. police departments across the country are under the microscope of course for controversy tactics but a new report out shows that it has been an especially deadly year for officers with a big spike in

police killed by gunfire. brian mooar live now on capitol hill with a closer look he at the numbers for us. >> reporter: last year saw the lowest number of officer deaths since 1944 but 2014 is a different story. another police honor guard, another plague draped casket and one more grieving family. in charles county maryland program jamel clagett died when he lost control of his cruiser that crashinged into a tree. he's just one of 126 local, state and federal police officers who have lost their lives this year. 24% jump over 2013 according to a new study by the national law enforcement officer's memorial in washington. >> officers are at greater risk today than in recent times and we need to do something to stop it. >> reporte 50 officers were shot to death this year. a 56% increase over 2013.

four hikers strappeded on a california mountain have now been found and rescued. the group was reported missing last night in the angeles national forest ranging in age from 18 to 61. once the sun rose it took a few ho hikers. they spent outside on a night when temperatures fell to the 30s. they were airlifted off the mountain. ine news for your health do you wake up feeling refreshd and well rested in the morning or do you wake up ready to hit the snooze button. new study by national sleep foundation shows we're a nation of tired people. they asked more than 1,200 adults about their sleep habits. 450% said they were sleep deprived and affected their daily activities and health. the average american goes to bed just before 11:00, 10:55:00 p.m. and wakes up just after 6:30

new developments now into that deadly airasia disaster. more traces and victims from that plane are being recovered. >> we have the latest. >> reporter: a tough day here in southeast asia as officials confirm they found bodies and debris in the water. those bodies and debris from that missing flight airasia 8501. it was made tougher by fact that relatives found out this news by watching local tv live and seeing those bodies floating in the water without any warning.

>> i apologize profusely for what they are going through. i am the leader of this company. >> reporter: there we 162 people on this flight. 17 of them were kids. one was a baby. >> i have to take responsibility. they are going resume the search again tomorrow morning as a number of ships are out there, planes helicopters at there disposal. divers will go down to an area where there's a large dark shadow. that's where they believe the bulk of the wreckage is. they hope to find the black boxes so they can be taken away and analyzed and find out what went wrong with this airplane. find out lessons they can learn. family members have chartered a plane for tomorrow. that plane will be taking them around the islands so they can pray at the last known location of this plane. a tough day here but begin again tomorrow. they still calling this a search-and-re operation so there is still hope that there

could be survivors. back to you. a puppy will finally be going home after an accidental cross country journey. but in there she has to come to washington first. penny is the dog. she lives in washington state. she was picked up by a truck driver who thought she was a stray. that driver traveled all the way to western pennsylvania. penny ended up at a pet hospital and a microchip determined her rightful owners. she has been staying with a foster family until transportati back home could be arranged. i'm so happy that i could help her out. i would hope somebody would do the same for me if i was in the same circumsd help. >> alaska airlines offered penny the return trip. however, there are no direct flights out of pittsburgh so she has to flight first here to washington and then finally back out west. i thought you were going to say first class. all right, we had a good looking day out there today. >> yeah but cold. >> it was cold.

35 at hagerstown martinsburg 36. so get ready for another bundle up kind of day but at least we'll have sunshine and at times there could be a little bit of a wind coming through the area. again quiet for tomorrow but still looking at that weekend storm system. we got a little more on that. let's head on over to the "weather cente with meteorolt doug kammerer. >> that weekend storm system we were looking at all the different computer models yesterday and came to a consensus it would take one of two paths. one going to the east for snow. the other path taking it further to the west and that means a warmer pattern for weekend and better chance for rain. this will be to the west and that means will be an inland storm and looking more and more likely and warmer temperatures and mainly rain. we say mainly rain because if this starts early enough on saturday could still be enough

colder air we see some sort of frozen precip maybe sleet or freezing rain. most of this should be a rain event for the weekend. right now part of the weekend could be a wash out. maybe not the entire weekend but we'll have that forecast for you all weekend long. >> for the weekend a little bit of a warm up. on new year's day sunshine high 42 degrees classic day for us. here's the temperature 42 at 3:00. it's going to be breezy. we could even see wind chill readings fairly low across the area. the temperature last year in ann arbor was cold. 17 trees and 6.4 inches of snow. other winter classics include all the way to 2010 here boston at 35 degrees. the other coldest we've seen out of the last five years. there's your weekend high 52 possibility of snow next tuesday

a routine traffic stop nearly turned deadly for this the state trooper. take a look. dash cam video shows the wisconsin state trooper being dragged after a suspected drunk driver sudley decides to take off. the trooper had his hand in the car when the man slammed on the gas. he was dragged 50 feet and could easily have been run over bypassing cars. >> he fell to the ground. he fell right at that fog line passing traffic was going by >> the trooper is now home recovering.

state troopers eventually caught the driver when he showed up at work. another frightening scene caught on camera in the mountains of washington state. a young couple hiking near the big four ice case had to scramble when an avalanche struck. >> reporter: cell phone video captured the day hike that turned into a sprint to survive. >> like a huge cloud of dust coming down. >> i was gone. i was done. >> reporter: this couple can smile now but saturday was different. >> got our boots on and got in the car, drove about two hours up to big four ice case. >> reporter: a popular spot year round and a place they had never been. >> everybody is talking about it. everybody wants to go to it. we wanted our turn at that. >> reporter: they followed foot steps that led off the trail. >> had the sign that says advantage warning.
