a fifth grader from creighton's corner elementary in ashburn, village. joshua justin died last week. his death come y room doctors are seeing a spike in flu cases. david culver at inova hospital. >> reporter: at all of the area hospitals you'll notice these signs going up. it's all part of an effort to stop the flu from spreading. the strict new visiting policy limits the number much visitors per patient to just two and if you walk through the doors you may be asked to put on a facemask. >> we definitely have seen a spike. started around thanksgiving. been increasing ever since. >> reporter: chief of infectiousl control says we've not seen the worst of it. flu is hitting our region hard. this year's flu shot is not as effective. >> we expect 80%, 90% efficiency

ahead at 6:00 i'll tell you why the doctors are worried about next week. in alexandria i'm david culver. >> josh's death comes as we see a spike in flu cases in our area and around the country. 36 states are now reporting widespread flu cases according to the latest data from centers for control. here in our region that includes maryland and virginia. there is a desperate search for a maryland toddler who is believed to be hundreds of miles from home. you may have seen an alert. about 14-month-old cameron beckford. more than 500 people have shared his photo from our facebook page. police say the boy's mother took the child and his sister from frederick, maryland to columbus ohio earlier this month. cameron's father reported him missing after the mother told him she could no longer care for the boy. and when investigators tracked her down she told them she abandoned the child on a stranger's porch the day after christmas. the mother is in custody and

police are searching a large park area for that child. right now a water main break is impacting the commute home this time it's on one of northern virginia's busiest roads. that break happened this morning on columbia pike in bailey's crossroads. crews have started repairs but several blocks are still shut down. news4 jackie bensen is live at the break with more on how it's impacting the community. >> reporter: we want to show you the very cold activity as workers from fairfax county and local utilities work to repair that break. the break started about 10:30 this morning causing columbia pike to buckle here in the bailey's crossroads video of what that looked like earlier to show you. it sent water gushing down the street damaging the road. columbia pike remains shut down between blair street and tyler street. now, when this was first

pentagon city mall is the closed off right now. it's unrelated to the water main break. the arlington county public health department made the move because the mall had to shut off water as crews made repairs to the sewage system there. the mall is currently undergoing expansion. >> the casket arrived at the church on a horse drawn carriage. funeral services held today for the charles county officer who was killed in a car crash on sunday. the emotional tributes began early this morning honoring a man known for his integrity and his kindness. news4 chris gordon was there. >> reporter: a bagpiper played "amazing grace." there was a 21 gun salute. five helicopters flew overhead with one veering off making the missing man formation. it began with a long thin blue line chopper 4 following police

2013. she said the tracking system said the box was last seen inside the major processing center in capital heights. she ke receipts and been trying to find that package ever since. one year later the postal service declared the package lost. they don't know where it is. >> it wasn't about the dollar value of the gifts but that it wasn't delivered and we put so much time and effort in it to make sure the girls had the things that were nice. >> reporter: federal agents looked into the case at one point to see if postal workers stoll the gifts but they ruled that out. same federal agents who are investigating a potential large scale theft ring by two workers inside the same capital heights processing center. workers suspected of opening the envelopes they were procession and stealing $9,000 worth of gift cards from inside. then trying to use those cards. investigators say they recently founa razor and 200 envelopes sliced open and they recently received court permission to

the fraternity at the center of a maryland lawsuit is responding to hazing allegations. alpha phi alpha released a statement said any members caught hazing will be suspended and those members will be recommended for expulsion. bowie state student kevin hayes said he was beaten daily when he tried to join the fraternity last year. he explained to news4 why he did not come forward sooner. >> you were told not to tell. >> yes. >> what did they say >> they said if you tell you're a snitch.

stars like steve carell came to morven park in leesburg to film scenes back in 2012. they needed to mimic a mansion owned by john dupont. so they used westmoreland davis' place. tatum almost led the secret out when he was spotted out at dinner in leesburg. still a lot of chatter about a deadly police involved shooting last week near ferguson missouri. today an internal police investigation con the suspect antonio martin pointed a gun at the officer who then shot the 18-year-old outside a convenience store. the incident in berkeley missouri was captured in this surveillance video. there were renewed protests after the shooting. today the city's mayor said people have the right to demonstrate, but he warned -- >> when there is noor the protester to continue in the city of berkeley unless they

will not accept the fact that mr. martin drew his gun first. >> the officer was responding to a report of shoplifting at that store. as we enter ski season a reminder tonight how important those safety bars and chair lifts can be. a tonight after a pretty big scare on the slopes and a 20-foot tumble. wanda moore has the story now from central oregon. >> reporter: it started like any other day on the slopes for the russell family. >> reporter: tyler and his brother were taking snowboard lessons. their dad was also on the slopes watching them from nearby. >> every time i would go down they went up. i would wave at them as they went up. >> reporter: it was their last run of the day when tyler slipped from the chair lift. >> i was just screaming help and i was terrified. >> reporter: he was holding on for a few seconds, dangling 18 feet in the air.
