meanwhil the air just cold enough to help keep that ice nice and cold. of course as i said earlier, i think this has been weather wise one of t best winter classics weather wise s going back to 2010 at least. look at this. we're at 43 degrees right now. in fact most of the game our temper were in the low 40s across the area. so we're holding pretty nicely. but again, with the sun setting, we're going to see those temper start to drop. 43 and sunshine the wind chill at 37 degrees rig. througho the area right now. we do have wind chills that are in the 30s. and we expect to see colder conditio as we get into the overnigh first thing tomorw morning. from sunshine to a clear sky and some clouds to talk about for tomorrow. i'll have more on that coming up. and some real cold air that's expect to move in next week. wel have all the details on that. guys? >> as we move on to other news here in the nation's capital, a

flyover at th winter classic this afternoon had some locals fearing. i was out with some friends when this happened. and we all sort of just stopped and said what was that? >> did you look up? >> i did, and i remembered about the time that the winter classic was starting. i said maybe it has something o with the winter classi >> well a flyover at the winter clc this afternoon had everybod looking up. theye fearing the worst. but the story trending on twitter right now with d.c. resides saying the loud jets caused some homes to shake, and some even thought we were und. >> we have also posted some photo galleries of the fan experien and reay all the key plays from the winter classic on nbcwashington. you can go check them out during th smoke poured out of a popular d.c. restaurant. we are told that fire is now out after hours of work by the fire departme. following a developg story right now, this started at distri 2 bar and grill on wisconn avenue. that's just up the street from the national cathedral.

news4's jackie bensen is live with more on the damage. >> repor erika, because it's new year's day, a lot of people are home and that is a really good thing. at his condo across the st on wisconsin avenue a man named bruce johnston smelled smoke. he went to the window and looked out and instinctively grabbing his phone. he shot a few seconds of video. you can see it here. you can see that smoke. now he said that's when he realized to his horror the smoke s coming from the roof of the build blowing skyward. and that the people in the restau didn' know it was on . >> right across the street there still people on the patio, even inside the bar, drinking. d so i ran over and explained to them guys the roof of the building is on fire. you all need to get out of here. and apparentl from what i understa t fire started in the kitchen. at that point, the staff out

front had become aware of it and pulled the fire alarm and evacuad peo at that point. luckily, everybody got out safely. fire investigato are on the scene here trying to determine what caused the blaze, and wisconn avenue remains shut down at mccombs street. live in northwest, jackie bensen news4. >> all right. thanks so much jackie. a mother was stabbed to death while taking refuge in a friend's home and police say the man who killed her is her husband. northern vir bureau report david culver is live in woodbrid tonig as police look into this brutal attack. and david, what are you hearing? >> repor chris, brutal indeed. d this is actually now the first murr investigation right here in prince william county for 2015. it happened less than 90 minutes after those midnight festivit a man now behind bars tonight right in prie william county accused of stabbing his wife while she was inside her friend locking up and leaving his woodbr home. this man tells us his niece

lived here and she witnessed a brutal murder this morning. >> reportee d okay? >> she is upset, obviously. >> repor yeah. >> but just one step at a time. >> reporte tt woman was helping out her friend erika rene sherwood. she gave erica and her child a place to stay with her and her kid. all the while, erica was workingh marital problems. around midnight, a knock at the door. say it was john nathian sherwood erica's spouse. wanted to talk. >> from what we know he was voluntary l into the home. it wasn't a forced entry type situatio t friend went to bed to be awoken by screams for help. they say he stabbed erica several times. the other woman grabbed one of e childn and ran to a neighbor. >> she was freaking out and everythi and all i heard was some was stabbed. carol livingston was at her neighbor's house, celebrg the new year. they were too scared. >> i hollered out the window

joins us live. >> actually jason is in the locker room and doug kammerer is going to help me out out here. d guys what a way to start 2015 for the washington capitals we figured if we're going to have a live guest, we're going to have the winter classic legend eric ferrer who scored a goal today, two goals four years ago in the winter classic in the caps' win, and again today. first of al what was it like out there today, playing on the infield of nats park in front of all these people? >> well definitely a lot cooler playing at home. obviousl our last winter c was on the road. but to play here in d.c. walking out of the capitol, coming throu the reflecting pond that was a pretty special moment for our team. and i thought d. represented itselfy well today. s was a game that didn't mean a whole lot. this is a regular-season game but had a completely t feel didn't it? >> it felt like a playoff game. we knew we were going to get the best effort from the blackhawks today. wanted to win a game for our fans and for our team and we

now we want to take you to that murder mystery inside a maryla parking garage. >> a man shot to death in an apartment building near a popular sho area in college park off the beltway. darcy spencer is live near the scene with what we are learning. darcy. >> well erika, prince county police just releas the name of the victim who was killed. he was 22 years old, lived in district heights. he was killed in a shootout early this morning in the g garage of this apartment building her bli behind me. residents tell me they have been complaing about security proble with little to no respon. a hyundai with at least bullet holes and two flat tires was towed from the parking garage

time there w fewer than 55 murders was back in 1985. the fan fest at today's rose bo may look a little different after this freak dust devil whipped thr pasadena. it happened yesterday right outside the rose bowl. the swirling winds just picked up the tents and the canopies and bouncy houses and so forth. people scrambled to get out of the way. the guy who shot this video says he was lucky to get away unhurt. four people were injured. but everyon is expected t. so the weather definitely held up for the winter classic. but i guess now the question is what's on tap for tonight? >> that's right. storm team 4 meteorologist doug ka not here. het having some fun at nats' park witnessing one heck of a game. doug? >> yeah it was absolutely c to be down here for this game. i mean the onset -- we were down around 10:00 tonight, the crowd already ready to go and on they started the game it was absoly beautiful to watch the capitals come out.

behind me you can see the building and they came out on the ice. the game itself amazing. for us to win, 3-2, with seconds left of the game one of the coolest things i've done sports wise in the d.c. area. let's take a look weather wise. it was absol per today. and right now still pretty nice. 43 degrees. that wind chil coming in at 37. so yeah the wind chill is still a little bit of a factor. and we have seen winds gusting upwards of 20 to 25 miles per today. currentl tempes at 43 degrees in d.c. 40 in rockville. 37 in gaithersburg. d 39 down towards manassas. as we move through the next day or so we're going to stay on the dry side. again, clear skies tonight, leading to a cold night. storm team 4 radar showing nothing on t radar, no chance of rain tomorrow. however, this weekend, well this weekend we've got something a little bit different. virnca johnson and i looking at the forecast. d vj you were here with me earlier. atmosphere something like we haven't seen here in a long time. that's true. and i think that's part of the reason why it probably felt so warm down aroun the area.

both carol and i, we took our coats off and said we don't need these today. great crowd and nice weather. but again, talking about rain coming up for the weekend. what i want to tell you, though you'll want to enjoy the temperat even with the rain coming in of the we're really going start seeing the mercury fall off. the radar again, dry, quiet across the area. look at the temperatures here by tomorrow morning. from 36 in manassas to around vienna chantilly. 34 35 degrees. so yes, it's going to be cold. and there still will be just a little wind left hanging on. up to the north around gaithers ad wheaton, 35 to start. suitland and largo, 37 degrees, your morning temperature. and, of course what that means is another bundle-up kind of day. bu you're not going to need the umbrella. i k you'll even need a scarf. te sta cold but will warm quickly tomorrow. maybe gloves and a nice warm coat. for sure sunglasses just like today. let me break it up for you here. there's the next 24 hours. you can see a mostly clear sky.
