something else threatens to up stage the ceremony. good evening i'm chris lawrence. get ready, a blast of arctic air is headed our way and storm team 4 amelia segel is here to show us what to expect. chris, it's hard to believe at 7:00 p.m. the temperature was 66 degrees. at this hour we're in the 40s and 50s. 54 is the temperature in washington. cold front moved through the area between 7 and 8:00 p.m. that brought with it some rain. that front has cleared the area and now our temperatures continue to tumble. by midnight or 1:00 a.m. temperature around 44. weir in the 30s by 45:00 a.m. it's blustery as well. winds tomorrow morning will be 10 to 20 miles an hour. when you factor in the winds, chris, stepping out the door 7:00 a.m. heading back to work it will feel like temperatures are in the 20s. tuesday, our attention turns to some snow. i'll let you know how much you could expect coming up in about

15 minutes. >> thanks. we want to turn now to breaking news. right now college park police are on the hunt for three armed men. they broke into a home a mile away from the university of maryland. the robbery happened on a home on pa toe mick avenue. the man inside the house said he gave up his belongings and feared for his life. they didn't hurt him. an alert was sent this evening to students notifying them about the crime. someone stole this customized van from a grandmother who is wheelchair bound. tonight she tells us they not only got her means of transportation they took her independence, too. last night that van was parked right outside her home in maryland. she needs it to get to a local hospital where she does volunteer work. she told news4 derrick ward the thieves left her feeling trapped in her own home. >> reporter: for the past ten years, joan had to use a wheelchair to get around. we could all envy the kind of

task that make up a typical week in her life. >> i go to holy cross to volunteer, tuesday, wednesday and thursday we would be watching our granddaughter, little granddaughter payton. then friday back to holy cross. >> reporter: she speaks of those things in the past tense now -- >> because our car was stolen. >> reporter: the white 2013 honda odyssey was customized for her use with a wheelchair ramp special seating and hand control. she only had it for about three months and it gave her a sense of freedom and mobility and usefulness. that's what was taken. >> i feel like i'm trapped. i know i'm not. i can go out in the front yard but i can't go anywhere. >> reporter: they believe the van was taken sometime between 11:30 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. palmers say vehicles like the one that was stolen to this spot are unique to each owner. another person in a wheelchair wouldn't necessarily be able to use it the same way she did. >> it's specific for this wheelchair. we have all our ramps in the back. >> reporter: fortunately palmer's family come to her side to help with errands and some of

the things she used to do on her own, but no one can replace the sense of independence that was taken away by a medical condition and restored by a vehicle. >> it's just really hard because it sort of re-enforces the whole disability thing. >> reporter: derrick ward news4. take a quick look. the van they stole was a 2013 honda odyssey. it's white with maryland tags 26465 h/t. we have new video tonight of a major fire in alexandria. you can see thesmoke pouring out of the apartments there. fire broke out near little river turnpike just off 395. investigators say it started on the first level and then spread to the upper floors which put a lot of residents in the path of the rising smoke and flames. >> so we got our firefighters immediately effected extinguishment stretched the hose line and started getting up to the balconies on ground ladders and to the upper floors to rescue the occupants. >> i heard people yelling and

crying. it was an intense feeling. >> 15 people can't go back in their homes tonight. paramedics rushed three women to the hospital. they were burned and suffering from smoke inhalation. another high-rise went up in flames in montgomery county because someone left food on the stove. this one broke out at the len next park apartment, close to the silver spring metro. they say a fire started in the 10th floor kitchen and cost $10,000 in damage but it could have been a lot worse. sprinklers put it out fairly quickly. some residents will have to be relocated. there has been an arrest in a part of dhak has seen a spike in crime. people were ducking for cover last november. tonight, investigators have charged a man from northeast with that shooting. he is also charged with carrying a firearm without a permit. last year murders, sex assaults and robberies were all up in ward 5, which prompted public safety meetings with police and some city leaders. out in maryland a double

shooting is forcing a local synagogue to change its policy. news4 discovered neighbors in greenbelt, are shocked, nervous and very afraid. >> i never experienced anything like this before. i'm kind of in shock a little bit. >> reporter: gunfire so close to sara o'brien's home in this close-knit co-op community on rich road is not the norm. >> i was inside last night and i heard some yelling and some shots. >> my husband heard three shots, pause, or gap, interval and then five more additional gunshots. >> reporter: this woman who did not want us to show her face on camera says gunshots seemed to come out of nowhere and she didn't hear noise from a fight that apparently broke out near her house and this synagogue before the shots were fired. >> extremely quiet. we hadn't heard any noise prior to that. >> reporter: there was a party at the synagogue last night, one neighbor describes it as a hip

hop party. the two teens who were shot ages 16 and 19 are expected to survive their injuries but this shooting has shaken this community and it will change the way the synagogue does business with outside groups. the mishkan torah synagogue released this statement expressing regret over the incident. saying it had no knowledge or or involvement in the event except it had rented its facilities to an outside community group. it is now changing its policy of renting to outside groups. >> it's a nice neighborhood. it's a nice synagogue. i know a lot of the people there. so i was real surprised. >> reporter: police say the shooting victims who were headed to the party at the synagogue could not tell them anything about the suspects. new at 11:00 p.m. el nor holmes at the funeral for edward brook will be held mer. norton tweeted she spoke with his wife about the plans.

senator brook was the first blackman to be elected u.s. senator by popular vote. he was republican who represented massachusetts but he grew up in the district. senator burke died of natural causes on saturday at the age of 95. stuart scott changed the way we talked about sports. i knew stu as a guy who loved his kids always had a kind word for you and was just a fantastic person to know. just about everybody will tell you who knew stu will tell you the same thing. well he died this morning after he struggled with cancer for the past seven years. he thought he had beaten the disease but it came scott anchored on espn for more than 20 years. he was a fixture on "sportscenter." his legacy was cemented last summer when he accepted the jimmy v perseverance award.

♪ >> reporter: on the streets of new york thousands of police officers paid tribute to a fallen brother wenjian liu. this was a show of solidarity representing departments from coast to coast. and a sign of solidarity for liu's grieving family. his young widow said he only wanted to serve his community. >> he is my hero. we can always count on him. >> reporter: his father's grief needed no translation. liu and his partner were eulogized by major bill de blasio. >> we lost the very best of us everything that we as new yorkers aspire to be. >> reporter: some officers turned their backs as the mayor spoke, believing he's been too

are in charge of the district's government police and schools. today, they all appear together to tell the nation what it takes to run the nation's capitol. d.c. mayor, muriel bowser kathy lanerr and chi ya henderson went on in the "meet the press." and she spoke about the challenges she's ready to take on when it comes to transportation. she isn't putting the brake on the streetcar project, but it is not full steam ahead. >> i don't think expand is the word. i like the word right size. >> officials were testing a streetcar saturday when it crashed into a car. it's opening has been delayed until late january. critics question whether it's a practical way to move lots of people. >> but we shouldn't let that dominate our public transit

new chief to lead the d.c. fire department. look now in virginia a yoga teacher died while hiking in mexico. he'll be remembered tomorrow in silver spring. hari simran fell off a cliff and hit his head and they think the died instantly. they found his body friday in a ravine. what caused a woman to lose control of her car and end up in rock creek is still a mystery tonight. she ended up in a shallow part of the creek right around lunchtime. she got out on our own climbed on to the roof of her car and waited until help arrived. police had to shut down part of rock creek park way for a couple hours while they were pulling the car out of there. at 16 most teenagers can drive, work even pay taxes. and now a city of maryland wants them to vote. on tuesday, the hyatts city will hear comments to let 16-year-olds vote in local

election. the idea is to increase voter turnout. if it passes they will join the city of tacoma park to allow some teenagers to vote. a new crop of lawmakers are about to descend on d.c. this week the house welcomes 58 freshman most of them republicans and over in the senate 13 new lawmakers will be sworn in. the new members say they want to curb the partisan atmosphere in the nation's capitol. to do that, they'll have to work with president obama. and conveniently he just got back to town. the president and his family took an overnight flight from hawaii and they are now back in the white house, fresh off his vacation and mr. obama will hit the road this week preparing for state of the union on january 20th. new at 11:00 p.m. severe storms did some major damage in southern georgia. take a look at this. the storms demolished barns and mobile homes, literally ripping them off their most of the damage was caused by strong, straight-line winds including a church steeple that was sheered off.

it came crashing down to the ground. those were some very very powerful winds. >> uh-huh. >> and i guess now this deep freeze that part of the country is in is making its way our way. >> we're included in that. why not? we'll experience breezy and windy conditions tomorrow wednesday and thursday as well. some of the coldest air -- in fact the coldest air so far this season will arrive later in the week on wednesday and thursday. before that tomorrow blustery about 25 degrees colder than it was today. you'll still need that warmest winter jacket you have as you head back to work on monday and the kids head back to school. for tuesday, some snow is in the forecast this includes the d.c./metro area just down right frigid on wednesday and thursday. not only that like i said, we'll be dealing with windchill temperature. i'll talk about that little bit more in a moment. but first, your planner for tomorrow. 7:00 a.m. a temperature of 38 degrees. it's already a cold start. it's still breezy at 7:00 a.m.

the winz remain breezy throughout the entire day tomorrow. and notice for the majority of the day, temperatures kind of hang in the upper 30s. partly to mostly sunny skies, so some good news there, but when you factor in the winz it will feel like temperatures are in the 20s throughout the day. 7:00 p.m. tomorrow evening, it is cold. a temperature around 30 and windchill temperatures will only be around 20. your outlook for tomorrow as far as travel is concerned, not too bad. need the sun glass. make sure the kids have on their warm jacket at the bus stop tomorrow. outdoor exercise definitely want to find the gloves and the hat with the windchill factor. heading out and about, you should fine with the warmer jacket on. future weather, ahead to tuesday, here we are at 5:00 a.m. it's overcast already. snow moves in after that. 7:00 a.m. we're dealing with snow for that morning commute. we'll continue to track snow showers for the remainder of the morning hours. once we hit the midday and early afternoon hours, any snow we do see starts to leave the area.

by 5:00 p.m. the evening commute we're looking good. your headlines for tuesday, some snow is likely especially around washington and areas to the north and west. some minor accumulation for most. this could slow that morning commute as far as totals are concerned. here is what i'm thinking right now, areas far back to the west in west virginia far western maryland you get the most 1 to 3 inches. montgomery county louden county frederick county parts of prince william county dusting to 2 inches. most of the d.c. metro area gets under an inch. might not see any accumulation at all in those areas. i'll be posting that map on they facebook and twitter pages after the newscast. wednesday and thursday these are the cold days high on wednesday of 29. it's worse on thursday high of only 24. windy at times, especially on wednesday and early thursday that will put windchill temperatures at times especially on thursday chris, between zero and 15 degrees.
